Albert James "Red" Draper Almont Albert James "Red" Draper, 69, a lifelong resident of Almont, passed away Thursday (February 26, 2009). He was born November 11, 1939, in Almont, to Clark and Florence (Muma) Draper. Mr. Draper graduated from Almont High School in 1960 before entering the U.S. Army. He proudly worked for Ford Motor Company as a vehicle test driver before retiring. He was a woodsman and enjoyed hunting, being outdoors and especially loved to be up north at his cabin in Grayling. He cherished spending time with his family. His biggest love was his only granddaughter. Mr. Draper is survived by his daughter, Alesha (Bill) Kuehl of Swartz Creek; granddaughter, Elizabeth; sister, Mary Powell of Mt. Clemens; nieces, Debra (William) Pummer of Mt. Arthur M. Fiebig, age 84, of Jonesville, Mich., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida. His health had been declining since Christmas and he peacefully departed on Ash Wednesday to spend Eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His wife and son were at his side. Arthur was born on July 13, 1924, in Sebewaing, Mich. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during Word War II aboard the USS Rocky Mount, General MacArthur’s communication ship. He was one of the men who transmitted MacArthur’s historic words, “I will return” and “I have returned,” near the Philippines. After the War, Arthur attended the Kansas City School of Watchmaking. Upon graduation, he married Ila Armbruster and in 1949 they purchased a jewelry store in Jonesville. In 1979, they acquired a second store with Jim and JoAnn Fiebig in Sturgis and owned both locations until their retirement in 1986. Fiebig Jewelers Inc. in Sturgis was sold to Brad Rockey in 2005 and continues today. Arthur was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and often played the organ there. He was a 50-year member of Lions Club and received a Lions highest honor, the Melvin Jones Award, in 2007.  Art was a longtime member of the American Legion and served as Jonesville Village President in the 1960s. Art was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma (Gremel) Fiebig; one brother, Carl; and one sister, Lorna Fiebig Highducheck. He is survived by his oldest brother, Edgar and his youngest brother, Raymond. He is also survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ila; son James Arthur Fiebig; daughter-in-law JoAnn (Gilchrist) Fiebig;  grandsons Chad Nettleman and Jared Arthur Fiebig, and one great-granddaughter, Alaina Mae. Funeral services for Art Fiebig will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsdale with Pastor Dan Johnson  officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Cemetery. Barbara M. Smith Lum Barbara M. Smith, 62, of Lum since 1964 and otherwise a lifetime area resident, passed away Tuesday (February 24, 2009). She was born August 15, 1946, in Flint, to Fred and Doris (Miller) McHugh. She married William Smith on March 28, 1964 at Hunters Creek. Mrs. Smith was an avid sportswoman, when she had the opportunity - she truly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Blanche Barbara Carr, age 90, of Tecumseh died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Lynwood Manor in Adrian. She was born Oct. 10, 1918, in Munising, Mich., the daughter of Andrew and Margaret (Matuszewski) Demogola, who were immigrants to the United States from Poland and early settlers of Melstrand, Mich. Blanche worked at the Munising Paper Mill during World War II. She later moved to Adrian in 1962. While in Adrian she worked for Martin Marietta, Bohn Aluminum and Siena Heights. She started working in 1989 in Boysville of Michigan as a Foster Grandparent and retired from there after 15 years of service. She was a member of the Munising American Legion Auxiliary Post 0131 for 62 years. Blanche was also a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh and the Sacred Heart Church of Munising. Blanche is survived by her children, Joan (Jim) Anderson of Munising, John “Jack” (Connie) Carr of Tecumseh, Peter (Esther) Carr of Adrian and Mary Sue Carr of Port St. Lucie, Fla. Also surviving are five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great- great-grandchild, several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat- grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Steven Demogola, Michael Demogola and Theodore “Bud” Demogola, and her sisters, Rose Melwicki and Anna Hamilla. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service and burial of cremains will take place at a later date in Munising, Mich. Brazil LaVern Petoskey, Jr., age 71, of Mendon, died late Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.  He was born on July 30, 1937, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., one of 13 children born to Brazil L. and Della M. (Ludwig) Petoskey.  Following graduation from Shepherd High School, Brazil went to work for the Michigan Department of Transportation, where he worked for the next 30 years. He first worked in maintenance, later as foreman, and retired as district Superintendent of Highways for the State of Michigan in 1994.  In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. Brazil was married to Barbara Jean Sallows on Aug. 20, 1961, in Battle Creek.  She survives along with two children and their spouses, Brian and Regina Petoskey, and Dawn and Jody Gest both of Centreville;  four grandchildren, Nathan and Eric Petoskey and Jordan and Kayla Gest;  two sisters, Della Petoskey of Mt. Pleasant and Betty Hoffman of Freemont, Ohio; several nieces and nephews including Sharon Wilkins and Rosie Evvinghaus.  Brazil was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings. In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his mother, Joyce Hale of Adrian; mother-in-law, Mildred Warner of Palmyra; one son, Trevor Hale and his wife, Alisha, of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Danielle Sheets and her husband, Todd, of Marysville, Ohio, and Ashley Osborne and her husband, Eric, of Xenia, Ohio; five sisters, Sharon Wendt and her husband, Bob, of Adrian, Cheryl Reed and her husband, Ross, of Tennessee, Penny Schamberger and her husband, Jacob, of Swartz Creek, Mich., Jennifer Adams and her husband, Bing, of Adrian and Tracy Hale of Lansing; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Hale, and his father-in-law, Maurice Warner. At Charles’ request cremation has taken place. Despard "Des" Humphrys Lapeer Despard "Des" Humphrys, 80, of Lapeer, passed away Tuesday (February 24, 2009). He married Margaret Loretta Norman on February 19, 1955. Mr. Humphrys served his country in the United States Navy, then trained to become a U.S. Marine. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, where he was member of the Knights of Columbus and active with their pro-life movement. Des enjoyed gardening, his fruit trees and building hiking trails. Mr. Humphrys had a proud and colorful career in aerospace, specializing in telemetry. He was a electronics technician, government ammunition (explosives) inspector, working for Lockeed-Martin, indirectly for NASA. Despard was involved with instrumentation for the Apollo 12 capsule and later with the C5A Cargo Plane - the worlds largest cargo plane. Donald D. Bolenbaugh, age 80 years of North Adams, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at Allegiance Health System in Jackson. He was born on Nov. 23, 1928 in Horton, the son of Murl G. and Kathryn (Smith) Bolenbaugh.  Don was a professional truck driver. He delivered steel and other commodities throughout the 48 Continental United States with close to 3 million miles driven without an accident. Don is survived by seven children, four sons, David Bolenbaugh of Adrian, Joel (Mickie) Bolenbaugh of Norman, Okla., Eric (Jennifer) Bolenbaugh of Hillsdale and Erin (Kimberly) Price of Hudson; three daughters, Linda Bolenbaugh of Osseo, Melody Wollet of Hudson, and Angela (Paul) Conklin of Pittsford; son-in-law, Del Loranger of Hudson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Norm (Arlene) Bolenbaugh of Addison; and several nieces and nephews. Donald E. Smead, age 87, of Adrian passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, in Melbourne, Fla.  Donald was born Feb. 13, 1922, in Adrian Township, the son of Forrest and Ruth (Hagerman) Smead. He graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1939. On Aug. 20, 1944, Donald married Laura A. Witt in Monroe, Mich. Laura, his wife of more than 64 years, survives. Don worked for Bohn Aluminum, currently Hydro Aluminum, for over 32 years before retiring. Prior to that he farmed for several years. Don was a former member of West Adrian Congregational Church. He was a member of the Moose, Farm Bureau, and also actively involved with the Adrian senior center. Don and Laura enjoyed traveling with the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, where they were members for 40 years. For the past 30 years, Don and Laura also enjoyed winters in Melbourne, Fla. In addition to his wife, Don is survived by his daughter, Shirley (Phillip) Walls of Corunna, Mich.; a brother, Howard (June) Smead of Adrian; two grandchildren, Cinde (Bob) Elston of Owosso and Jim (Bonnie) Griffin of Muskegon; four great-grandchildren, Robby, Aleia, Brianna and Landon; and his good friend, James Griffin, Sr. He was preceded in death by a son in infancy, Gary Smead; a brother, Wayne Smead, and a great grandson, Cameron Griffin. Eleanor Carol Whitetree, age 78, of Adrian and Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was born Oct. 13, 1930, in Flint, Mich., to Frank Robert and Eleanor Madeline (Holliday) Miracle. On April 23, 1949, she married Donald Robert Whitetree in Flint. He preceded her in death on July 6, 1995. A shining example, Eleanor was named “Best New Civitan” after her first year with the Lenawee County organization. She has been vice president of projects and program director for Civitan. She was the director of the Lenawee County Easter Seals organization, and was named “Volunteer of the Year” for Easter Seals in this region of the state. She was a business woman and real estate agent for more than 40 years. Eleanor loved spending time with her family, her cats, reading, crossword puzzles, traveling and watching classic movies. Helen Sontag, 72, of Sebewaing, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 at St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw following a six-month illness., She was born Aug. 27, 1936 in Kilmanagh, daughter of the late Edwin and Martha (Fuerst) Weber., She was united in marriage to James A. Sontag on June 8, 1957 in Gagetown. He preceded her in death in January 1997., Helen had been employed as a secretary at the Owendale-Gagetown School system for 19 years before retiring in 1998., She was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling., Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Mark (Sherry) Sontag, and one daughter, Terri Mihacsi, all of Sebewaing; four grandchildren, Darcie (Chris) Hohne of North Branch, Stacey (Scotty) Buehrly of Owendale, Charlie Mihacsi and Jennifer Mihacsi, both of Sebewaing; two great-grandchildren, Brayden Buehrly and Madeline Hohne; a half brother, Edwin (Chris) Weber of Kawkawlin; and several nieces and nephews., The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The Rev. Helen L. Moore, 92, of Ransom Township, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at Evergreen Manor in Montpelier, Ohio. She was born Jan. 14, 1917 in Montgomery to Harry and Magnolia (Royer) Shaffer. She was married in November of 1936 to Lawrence Moore and he preceded her in death in 1981. Helen is survived by two daughters, Judy (James) Dunlap of Bryan, Ohio and Carolyn (Robert) Grimm of Alvordton, Ohio; four sons, Robert (Arletta) Moore of Frontier, Harry (Eliese) Moore of Waldron, Bruce Moore of Pittsford, and Gary (Sandra) Moore of Waldron; two sisters, Marcille Carter of Holiday City, Ohio and Lillie Junge of Holgate, Ohio; four brothers, Carl Shaffer of Hillsdale, Roy (Marilyn) Shaffer of Ypsilanti, Paul (Joyce) Shaffer of Waldron and Rich (Carolynn) Shaffer of Hillsdale; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband Lawrence, Helen was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters, a daughter-in-law and three grandchildren. Funeral services for Helen L. Moore will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Don Lee officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Ransom Township. Helen Southworth, 91, of Morenci passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009, at home. She was born on June 15, 1917, in Metamora, Ohio, the daughter of William and Mayme (Meeker) Kahle. On June 15, 1954, in Curtis, she married Frederick Southworth. He preceded her in death on May 30, 1997. Helen lived her entire life in the Morenci area, working more than 45 years at the Morenci Bank as a bookkeeper, teller and officer, retiring in January of 1983 as Vice President of the Bank of Lenawee.  She was a member of the Croswell Opera House, the Lenawee County Historical Museum, the Lucy Wolcott Barnum Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the LaPlaisance Bay Chapter Daughters of the American Colonists. Helen is survived by several cousins. Besides her husband, Fred, Helen was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Harland Kahle. There will be no visitation, funeral or viewing. MANNIKKO - Jack A. Mannikko, 71 of White Pine, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain. He was born August 6, 1937 in Ontonagon to the late Elsie (Carlson) Prisk and Toivo Mannikko. Jack graduated from Ontonagon High School and joined the Navy in 1955. He served for three years active duty and was a member of the reserves until 1963. Jack was very proud of his military service. In 1981 he was united in marriage to Susan Wiita. Jack was employed in the mining industry. He liked to work on all types of puzzles, from jigsaw to crossword. In the fall Jack enjoyed making firewood with his daughter Amber. He is survived by his wife, Susan; daughters, Amber, Sandy (Brian) Beauchamp and Wendy Davis; sons, Randy (Yolanda) and Jack Mannikko; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Beth) Mannikko; and special cousins, Marcie and Eino Mannikko, Elaine Scholar and Elvie Mannikko. Jack was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Candy Kay Mannikko; sister, Janet Neimila; and brother, Kenneth Mannikko. James F. Rogers of Kalamazoo, Mich.,  passed away Feb. 27, 2009. James was born Dec. 11, 1922, in Sturgis, a son of Frank and Margaret (Rahn) Rogers. He was an Army veteran. James married Mary Griffeth, who preceded him in death in August of 2008. Surviving are three children, Jane (Noris) Giggy, Paul (Mae) Rogers and Mark (Diane) Rogers; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Rogers. At his request, cremation has taken place. Burial of cremains will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. March 10, and a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. March 29 at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego. Jason Sean Witte, 27, a resident of Harbor House Ministries in Jenison, was transformed to perfection Monday, March 2, 2009.  Jason was born June 12, 1981 in Nederland, Texas.  Jason graduated from Ottawa Area Center in 2007 and loved his home at Harbor House.  He was a member of Park Christian Reformed Church.  Jason loved life and touched all who knew him with his smile and unconditional love.   Jason is survived by his parents, Alan and Brenda (DeVries) Witte; siblings,  Christine (fiancé, Jonathon Wiest), Daniel, and Amanda; grandfather, John W. and Nell DeVries.  He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Bonnie DeVries; and grandparents, Samuel and Martha Witte.  A memorial service to celebrate Jason’s life and transformation will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Park Christian Reformed Church, 1496 W. 32nd St., Holland.  The Rev. John spent much of his youth in the Pontiac area. He attended Pontiac Central High School, where he first met his wife of 43 years, Lavonne Burgess. After high school, he loyally served his country as Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. After returning from active duty, he married Lavonne and began a career in the automotive field as a mechanical engineer. John had an astounding understanding of old cars and soon developed a passion for collecting them. He would continue working within his trade up until his death. John was extremely devoted to his family and his friends in the Lapeer, Oakland and Macomb County areas. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Joyce Mildred (Barton) Patrick, 68, of Stockton, Mo., passed away on Friday, Feb. 27. 2009. Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 5 at Stockton Cemetery in Stockton, Mo. at 2 p.m. Joyce was born on Nov. 30, 1940 in Coldwater. She lived most of her life in Kansas City before moving to Stockton, Mo. in 1998. She was an amazing, strong, and selfless woman. She loved being with her family and enjoyed the outdoors and riding her four wheeler. She survived being hit by a car in 1980. This accident left her with injuries she was determined to overcome. Her speech was affected, and her ability to walk, but she didn’t let anything stop her in her resolve to live strong and be happy, and to bring happiness to those around her by just being in her company. She made you realize that whatever discomfort you may be in, you make the best of the situation and carry on. She overcame so much in her lifetime and very rarely complained She touched and inspired everyone who knew her, even people she just met. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a way of making people laugh and be happy in any situation. Joyce loved life and found the beauty in everything and everyone around her. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten. Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Robert E. Barton, and her mother Charlotte C. He began his working life as a fruit peddler and bricklayer, and rose to prominence as a pioneering designer and innovator in the post-WWII production housing business, remaining an active developer until his retirement. Barney was an advocate of fitness and a healthy life. He was an avid skier, fisherman, tennis player and walker. Barney's love of the outdoors and adventurous spirit shaped and inspired the lives of his children and grandchildren. He was a mentor and inspiration and admired for his creativity, open-mind, unfailing good humor and his interest in the ideas of others. Above all, Barney was a family man. He was totally devoted to his wife of sixty-four years and to his children. They were, beyond measure, the most important part of his life. He was an abundantly kind and generous man who throughout his long years took care of his immediate family, his parents, his sister and his extended family by marriage. All who knew and loved him will remember and miss greatly his warm smile and gentle spirit and the good and honorable life that he lived. Beloved husband of Jeanette Katzman. Landon is survived by his parents; his grandparents, Ray and Cyndi Monty of Sturgis, Robert Goodwin of Lima, Ohio, and Wilma and Ed Bellamy of Lima, Ohio; great-grandparents, Stella Pacheco of Colorado and Irene Eaton of Sturgis; aunts and uncles, Shawna and Justin Deeds of Centreville, Tim and Celeste Monty of Fox Lake, Ill. and Melissa Goodwin of Lima, Ohio. Lillie Mae Martin, age 83, of Riga passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 11, 1925, to Athie David and Minnie Lou (Mitchell) Andrews in Athens, Ala. She attended Blissfield Baptist Church. Lillie was always working, but was best known for her smiling face as a waitress at Big Boy. She enjoyed doing all types of needle crafts and loved gardening and fishing. Lillie enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Lillie is survived by her children, Barbara (Charles) Carter, David (Susan) Martin, Priscilla (David) Ramsey, John (Rose) Martin, Deborah Martin, Linda (Robert) Slusarski and Timothy (Paula) Martin; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Beulah Sims. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Martin, and four brothers and two sisters. Guza in 1970 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Parisville. He preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1999., She is a graduate of Sandusky High School. Lou Wanda was employed at the Ubly Community School since 1981 in the cafeteria and custodian of maintenance. She enjoyed cats, crafts, gardening, needle work, and visiting with family and friends., Lou Wanda is survived by two daughters, Jane Ann (David) Sadro of Ubly, and Theresa (Dan) Hill of Bad Axe; two sons, Eugene Guza of Bad Axe, and Leon Guza Jr. and Karan of Bad Axe; and nine grandchildren, Justin and Daniel Sadro, Sarah and Kelsey Hill, Sloan, Kelsie and Darian Gross, and Rayne and Sommer Guza. M. Howard Sprowl, 85, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Feb. 28, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. He was born April 15, 1923, in Sturgis, Mich., a son to the late Charles D. and Elsie M. (Bowser) Sprowl. Howard had resided in Sturgis his whole life with the exception of the time he was in the military. On May 4, 1944, he married Lorraine I. Nelson in Tampa, Fla. Howard was a truck driver by trade and following several years of employment with Central Transport he retired in 1983. Prior to joining Central Transport he had driven for Days Transfer and Brady Motor Freight. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Force earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. Howard was a member of the Eagles Lodge #1314 and he enjoyed playing golf, fishing and woodworking. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lorraine; one daughter, Maxine (Robert) Gravit of Sturgis; three sons, Charles H. “Chuck” (Ruth Ann) Sprowl of Sturgis, Frank L. (Cindy) Sprowl of Sturgis and Jack L. Sprowl of Sturgis; four grandchildren, Cassie Bibb, Jason (Dannielle) Gravit, Jensen Sprowl and Lauren Sprowl; three great-grandchildren, McKenna Bibb, Brecklyn Bibb and Annika Bibb and several nieces and nephews. Major Timothy L. Cook (Ret), 58, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, Feb. 28, 2009, at his home. He was born Feb. 5, 1951, in Tipton, Ind., a son to Donald and Sarah Jane (Pickering) Cook. Major Cook had resided in the Sturgis and Howe, Ind., area since 1988. On July 31, 1999, he married Janice Romanyk at the St. James Chapel in Howe, Ind. He had a long affiliation with Howe Military School and currently held the position of admissions counselor. Major Cook’s military career began as a Private in the U.S. Marine Corp in June of 1969; he served two tours in Viet Nam with the 1st Marine Division. Other assignments included Japan, Thailand, Korea, the Philippines, Hawaii and California. Some of this time was spent aboard as aircraft carrier (USS Oriskany CVA 34) and a missile cruiser (USS Oklahoma City CLG-5). Sgt. Cook was discharged honorably in November 1976. In June of 1978, he joined the Indiana Army National Guard. This gave him many assignments in Indiana and around the world. In October of 1980 he went to Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the infantry. Major Cook served as a Platoon Leader, an Executive Officer, and a Company Commander. Then he was assigned sequentially to Battalion, Brigade and Divisional staff positions as an Intelligence Officer (S2), a Battalion and Brigade level Operations and Training Officer (S-3), and finally in the 38^th Div. as the Operations and Plans Officer. Major Cook also served as a Liaison Officer for all Reserve and Guard Deployments to Central America at Sato Cano AB in Honduras, in 1983. In August of 1999 the Major left active Guard and transferred into the U.S. Army Reserves Retired. Tim was proud to have served his country and received many awards and decorations including the Purple Heart. Tim was a member of the LaGrange, Indiana American Legion #215 and the Eagles Lodge #1314. He was an avid reader, enjoyed most all sports, playing golf and pool and watching NASCAR racing. He was a dedicated fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Oakland Raiders. He always followed Indiana University Basketball and had a true respect and admiration for Bobby Knight. Tim may have had many interests, hobbies and involvement in the military but the one thing he valued the most was his family. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of nine years,  Janice; two daughters, Angela (Howard) Murray of Plainfield, Ill., and Kimberly (Shane) Strawser of Sturgis; three sons, Kevin (Martha) Romanyk of Grand Rapids, Chris (Jaime) Romanyk of Sturgis and Doug Toedte of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; parents, Donald and Sarah Jane Cook of Frankton, Ind.; three sisters, Connie (Keith) Moore of Frankton, Ind., Debbie Coons of DeLand, Fla., and Tammy; three brothers, Brian Howell of Frankton, Ind., David Howell of Wisconsin and Donald (Shanna) Cook of Niles, Fla., and many nieces and nephews. Margaret J. Newland (nee Garn), age 79, of Coldwater, passed away Feb. 28, 2009.  Margaret was born Aug. 18, 1929 in South Bend, Ind., the daughter of Charles and Cleo (McClane) Garn. She married Lloyd Newland on June 13, 1948 in Albion, and he survives.  Mrs. Newland enjoyed spending time with her family and sewing. Besides her husband Lloyd, Margaret is survived by her children Gary (Kay) Newland of Tekonsha, Stephen (Cindy) Newland of Homer, Alice (Stephen) Cavinder and Linda (Tom) Hampton, all of Tekonsha; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters Wanda Miller and Mary Wolverton, both of Plymouth, Ind.  Margaret was preceded in death by her granddaughter Kelly Marie Hampton; four brothers and two sisters. Marie I. Radtke 1920-2009 Marie Irene Radtke, 88, Caseville, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at Lake Orion Nursing Home while under hospice care. She was born May 1, 1920 in Detroit to the late Albert Hugo and Mary Ann (Schulte) Hiller. She grew up in Center Line and graduated from St. Clement High School in 1938 after which she attended Wayne State College in Detroit. On May 30, 1942 she married John George Radtke Jr. at St. Clement Catholic Church. John preceded her in death on February 10, 1996. After the war, Marie and John built a home in Center Line where all of her children were raised. Marie retired in 1982 from H.L. Claeys Plumbing, Heating and Well Drilling of Warren. Having had a cottage in Caseville since 1964, they moved there upon retiring in 1982. Marie was an active member of St. Roch Catholic Church, having served on Parish Council and the Women's Society. She was also a member of the Caseville Eagles #3690 Auxiliary, Caseville Library Club and the Caseville Retirement Club. She enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, making afghans and spending time with her family. She is survived by her children, John (Joann), Alpena, Marie (Dennis) Bolo, Sterling Heights, Daniel (Dina), Bay City, Dianne Polk, Center Line and David (Denise), Allen, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and sister Virginia (Vincent) Grobbel, N.C. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ralph and Albert Hiller. Funeral mass was held on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at St. Roch Catholic Church. Rev. Midge was a member of Harlem Reformed Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel R. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Merle D. Raber, of Jonesville, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born April 9, 1927 in Allegan the son of Roger and Mabel (Long) Raber. He is survived by his wife, of 56 years, Alice B. Raber; four children, Zale (Alice) Raber of Suffolk, Va., Tori (Robert) Morrison of Brighton, Tenn., Kenneth (Christine) Raber of Holland, and William Raber of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Taylor and Merice Raber and David (Emily) Mobley; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Mr. Raber graduated from Allegan High School and continued his education at Michigan State University where he graduated in 1952. He served his country in the United States Navy and was a member of the American Legion Post in Jonesville. He worked as a Wildlife Biologist and retired from the Department of Natural Resources after 30 years of service. After his retirement he continued to work for the Hillsdale County Soil Conservation District. He was also a member of the Jonesville Lions Club, the Branch County Community Band, the Michigan Fiddlers Association and the Somerset Congregational Church and he was a life member of the International Order of the King’s Daughters and Sons. At his request cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Merle D. Raber will be held at the Moscow Plains Cemetery in Moscow Township at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor John Reist officiating. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Michigan Fiddlers Association-Youth Program or to the Chautauqua Building Program King’s Daughters and Sons, or the Somerset Congregational Church.   |

Ralph was born on July 2, 1923 in Detroit, son of the late Arthur and Gertrude (Mortenson) Umbreit. He married Kathleen Hoyt on July 5, 1970 in Deckerville. He lived most of his life in the Forestville area. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and was an ex WWII Army P.O.W. Ralph was a member of the Minden City United Methodist Church. Buster enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and being with his family. He is survived by his wife; Kathleen A. Umbreit of the Forestville area, two daughters; Shanda (Fred) Golda of Sterling Heights, Marla (Michael) Pigozzi of Fallston, Maryland, five grandchildren; Noelle Golda, Carley Golda, Garrett Burns, Christopher Pigozzi and Isabelle Pigozzi, one sister; Dorothy Oliphant of Cass City, one step-son; Robert Dawson of Clio, several nieces and nephews. Rex Blake Flickinger, 87, of Pioneer, Ohio, passed away Saturday Feb. 28, 2009, at home following an extended illness. He was born May 21, 1921, in Ranson Township to Ora and Mable (Mills) Flickinger.  Rex retired from the Aro Corporation in 1983, and was a longtime pastor at many area churches including East Ovid, South Amboy and Camden Missionary Church, where he currently served.  He is survived by the love of his life, wife Marjorie May (Keck) Flickinger, whom he married over 70 years ago on June 17, 1938.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Also surviving are daughters. Joanne Dohm of Pioneer, Lynda Robison of Hillsdale, Jill (Sam) Shaw of  Montpelier, Ohio, Leah (Kevin) Klingler of Waldron; son, Lynn (Aimie) Flickinger of Macon, Ga.; sister, Jeanne (Russell) Gee of Waldron; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, O.J., Harry and Max; sister, Marjorie Loomis; two sons-in-law, Jim Dohm and Jim Robison; and one grandson, Dennis Robison. Robert Smart Jr., age 71, of Holland, formerly of Midland, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at Hospice House of Holland. He graduated from Purdue University with a masters degree in Chemical Engineering. Robert retired in 1993 after 30 years with the Dow Chemical Company. Robert and Joan moved to Holland following his retirement. He spent the next three years working for Allen Extruders. Robert was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Holland and a former member of the Chapel Lane Presbyterian Church in Midland. Robert was preceded in death by his father, Robert Smart. Ruth N. Swartzendruber 1925 - 2009 Ruth Naomi Swartzendruber, 83, Pigeon, passed away Friday, February 27, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care in Pigeon. She was born in Oliver Township on April 21, 1925, the daughter of the late Emanuel and Kathryn (Zehr) Swartzendruber. Ruth was a woman of faith and a member of Pigeon River Mennonite Church. She loved helping the poor and needy and was known as the "bread lady" of the community. She gave her time and money to many Christian organizations, including Rosedale Mission and Gospel for Asia. Although not a school teacher, she had a passion to teach, which included Bible School and Sunday School, and enjoyed helping people. Ruth often said, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." Ruth was a homemaker throughout her lifetime and worked for Dr. Scheurer as a housekeeper and assistant for 40 years. She enjoyed handwork such as knitting, sewing, making toys and also enjoyed gardening and bird watching. She especially loved her granddaughter Kailea, her "little dolly". She is survived by her daughter, Ovidia (Titus) Cerna, Goshen, Ind.; a granddaughter, Kailea Cerna and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jantzi and a brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Mabel Swartzendruber. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Pigeon River Mennonite Church, with Rev. Alvin Yoder, pastor, officiating. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Sarah “Jane” Durall, 76, of Mosherville, passed away Friday at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  She was born Jan. 11, 1933, in Magoffin County, Ky., to Walter and Sadie Wireman.  She worked as a certified nursing assistant at Spring Arbor Manor and was a member and current president of the Mosherville Ladies Aid.  She loved her cat and enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking and canning. On Sept. 11, 1965, she married Charles Franklin Durall and he preceded her in death on Jan. 16, 1994. Survivors include: one daughter, Julie Gordon of Jonesville; grandchildren, Elizabeth Gordon of Jonesville, Amy (Steve) Cain of Somerset Center, Michael (Kari) Prater of Litchfield; great-grandson, Gage Paul Cain; three sisters, Kash Sanford, Charlene Sanford, Erma Lovely; five brothers, Harold Dean Wireman, Claude Wireman, Bob Wireman, Clyde Wireman and Russell Wireman. Shirley Smith, age 72, of Coldwater, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009. Shirley was born Nov. 21, 1936 in Stroh, Ind., the daughter of Carl and Violet (Wilson) Gundrum. She married Leroy Shaffer on Dec. 31, 1953 and he preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1986. She married Thomas Myers in April 1991 and he preceded her in death in Nov. 1991. She married Thomas Smith on June 6, 1992 and he survives. Mrs. Smith retired from Quincy Products in 2000 after 33 years of service. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Eagles, both in Coldwater. Shirley loved to play bingo, was a former bowler for many years, and enjoyed mushroom hunting. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her children and grand children. Besides her husband Thomas, Shirley is survived by her children: James (Sue) Shaffer and Kathy Hurley, and her step daughter: Michelle Smith, all of Coldwater; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and her sisters: Mary, Wilma, and Annie. Shirley was preceded in death by two husbands, three brothers, and one sister. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Dutcher Funeral Home, Coldwater. Visitation will be on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Coldwater. Tanya Marie Brooks Fenton Tanya Marie Brooks, 41, of Fenton, passed away Thursday (February 26, 2009) at Hidden Peace Assisted Living. She was born April 10, 1967, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Robert Rudyj and Jean Knox. She married Tim Brooks on January 21, 1989 in Chicago. Tanya attended Indiana University, earning her Associates Degree in pre-school education. She then moved to Ft. Wayne and became a pre-school teacher for Epiphany Lutheran Church. After moving to Michigan, Tanya became the visionary for Hidden Peace Assisted Living, searching for a way to comfortably enable women with Multiple Sclerosis to lead a normal life. She was a strong woman who survived multiple sclerosis and breast cancer. Faith and love were the cornerstones of her life. Tanya was a devoted mother and wife who will be missed dearly and loved forever. WM. GORDON BROCK DECKERVILLE Wm. Gordon Brock, age 77, of Deckerville, Mich., passed away in his home after a long illness on February 27, 2009. Gordon was born on August 10, 1931 to Claude I. and Charlotte A. (Halliday) Brock in Sarnia Ontario, Canada. Gordon is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara (Siegel), his four children; Kathy (Bill) Meneghin of Croswell, Ken (Susan) Brock of Novi, Carrie (Dave) Arndt and Helen (John) Kennedy of Deckerville, seven grandchildren; Beth (Nick) Gornowich of Harbor Beach, Renee (Scott) Stacer of Ruth, Jonathon (Tina) Block, Kathryn Kennedy of Deckerville, Amy (Kyle O'Connor) Arndt of Ubly, Erick Kennedy of Deckerville and Ian Brock of Novi, three great grandchildren; Nichole and Lily Gornowich of Harbor Beach, Abigail Block of Deckerville, three sisters; Ruth (Bill) Pulley of Owosso, Millie (Jim) Saylor of Birmingham, Mary Lisk of Lansing and one brother; Fred Brock of Corunna. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Jason Block and a brother-in-law, Steve Lisk. Widely known were Gordon's twinkling eyes, love of family, farming, "imaginative" jokes and mechanical interest. He enjoyed aviation and was a private pilot for many years. His pride and joy was a 1952 John Deere R purchased new in 1951 and held to this day. A private family gathering proceeded cremation. An informal Celebration of Gordon's life will be held at the Delaware Township Hall, 7979 Maple Grove, Minden City, MI 48427, on Sunday, March 8 from 1-4 pm. Age 66, of Owosso, MI passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at Memorial Healthcare, Owosso, MI. There will be a Memorial Service held at a later date. Lyman was born in Owosso, Michigan on March 3, 1942, the son of Lyman Elnathan and Jane Elizabeth (Wiggins) Woodard and resided most of his life in the Detroit area. Lyman married Cynthia Elaine King on August 30, 2004. She passed away April 5, 2005. Lyman was a graduate of Owosso High School and attended Oscar Peterson School of Jazz in Toronto. He started playing the piano at the age of three and was a gifted piano and Hammond B3 organ player, music was his life. He was a Director and Arranger for Motown and toured with Martha Reeves. Lyman owned and operated Corridor Records of Detroit and was the Director and Arranger for Lyman Woodard Trio and Lyman Woodard Organization. He was a well known and beloved musical artist in Detroit. Lyman was also a short story writer and retired to his family farm in Owosso where he spent his later years. He is survived by his son Lyman Elnathan Woodard, IV of Hamtramck, MI, twin sisters, Jane Stevens of Sisters, OR and Susan Sasso of Olema, CA; and his niece Sarah and Joe Purcell of Dublin, Ireland. Lyman was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shiawassee County Humane Society. Wava M. Vanek, age 86, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Monday, March 2, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Sturgis. She was born July 14, 1922, in Colon, a daughter of the late Edd and Grace (Davis) Snook. Wava had resided in the Sturgis area all of her life, and on July 31, 1948, she married Paul W. Vanek in Angola, Ind.  He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1980. She had been employed by the Kirsch Company, Freeman Mfg., Davidson Laundry, and worked for over 10 years and retired from Mr. Donut in Sturgis.  After retirement, at age  60, she worked for a short period part-time at Glabman Paramount. Wava enjoyed cooking and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Surviving are five children, Phillip (Lada) Vanek of La Vernia, Texas, Frank Edward (Sheila) Vanek of Ishpeming, Phyllis (Larry) Kahila of Sturgis, Donna (David) Reeb of Sturgis and Sharon (Roy) Frohriep of Burr Oak; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Brandt of Kalamazoo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Harold and Berton Snook; and two sisters, Alice Lahrke and Wilma Lane. The family will receive friends and relatives from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis, MI 49091.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Wava M. Vanek will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Klafehn, Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.  Graveside services will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations be directed to Sturgis Hospice, P.O.
