ANITA MAE RASMUSSEN ABRAHAMSON MARLETTE Anita M. (Kester) Rasmussen, age 89, passed away at her home in Marlette, Michigan on Saturday, March 7, 2009 surrounded by her family. She was born May 20, 1919, in Croswell, Michigan, daughter to the late Elmer and Mary Ellen (Thomas) Kester. She married Holger Rasmussen on May 28, 1938, and they raised three children; Scharla, Rex and Kai Rasmussen. She and Holger were successful business owners of the Marlette Lumber and Concrete Products. Holger passed away on April 29, 1995. Anita married Armas Abrahamson on May 25, 1996 in Grand Marais, Michigan. He passed away on December 17, 2004. Anita was a devoted wife and mother, a faithful Christian and member of the First United Methodist Church of Marlette, a member of the Danish Sisterhood and Cub Scout Leader. She was a talented pianist and organist. She took great pride in her home and was a generous and creative hostess. Besides her husbands, Anita was predeceased by her grandson, Erik Rasmussen. She is survived by her children and their spouses; Scharla & John Tapson, Rex & Cheryl Rasmussen, Kai & Rhonda Rasmussen. Her surviving grandchildren include; Marti Rasmussen, Shane (Kelly) Rasmussen, Adrienne (Larry) Tapson-Hart, Heather (John) Swanson, Matthew (Tana) Tapson, Joey (Kevin) Fielder and Maggie (Robert) Moser, great grandchildren; Ella Rasmussen, Sayde Rasmussen, Brandon Hart, Marissa Hart, Meredith Swanson and Zoie Moser. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the United Hospice of Marlette or to the charity of the donor's choice. A Memorial Service may be scheduled at a later date. Johnson, Adeline Ruth Fenton, Michigan Age 85, of Fenton, died Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Tanglewood Assisted Living. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church of Fenton, 503 S. Leroy St., Fenton with Pastor Dale Swihart officiating. Visitation will be held 3-9 p.m. Wednesday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Avalon Hospice. Mrs. Johnson was born February 15, 1924 in Chesaning, the daughter of Anton and Julia (Ferrius) Greilich. She married Richard Johnson on August 17, 1946 in Saginaw and he preceded her in death on August 11, 2005. Mrs. Johnson retired from Second National Bank in Saginaw after 15 years of service. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fenton and the Red Hat Society. Mrs. Johnson had taught sunday school and was a Brownie Leader. She loved cooking and baking. Austin Rogers 1918 - 2009 Austin Rogers, 90, Pigeon, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Home Sweet Home in Pigeon. He was born in Bad Axe on June 11, 1918, son of the late Sterling and Katherine (Koch) Rogers. Austin served 1942-1946 with the United States Army in Portugal during World War II. On October 30, 1957 he was united in marriage to Florence Edna Limberger in Barton City. She preceded him in death on February 6, 2000. Austin retired in 1977 from the A&P grocery store near Livonia. He and Florence moved to the Pigeon area in 1978, where he was a faithful member of the Salem United Methodist Church. Austin loved his church and being with his church family, and often served as greeter and usher. He enjoyed yard work and was a hobby gardener, growing things that others could not. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by a sister, Dorothy McGregor and a brother, Donald Rogers, both of the Glennie area; a sister-in-law, Donna Limberger,Pigeon and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Rogers and Roy Rogers and a brother-in-law, Ralph Limberger. Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at the Salem United Methodist Church, Pigeon. Rev. Michael T. Sawicki, pastor, officiated, with burial taking place in Grandlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church Building Fund. Arrangements were handled by Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon.

BEATRICE E. ROSS MARLETTE Beatrice E. Ross, age 88, of Marlette died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Gratiot Medical Center in Alma. Beatrice has lived in Marlette since 1942 and was previously from Girard, Michigan area. She was born February 10, 1921 in Coldwater, Michigan, daughter to the late Roland and Dorothy (Youse) Wagoner. She graduated from Cold- water High School in 1937 and W.M.U. in 1942 with her Teaching degree. Beatrice married Morris C. Ross on June 19, 1943 in Girard, Michigan, he has preceded her in death, January 17, 1993. Beatrice taught English and was the Librarian in Marlette High School for many years and also taught at Brown City High School. She was a member of the Marlette First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, G.F.W.C. and Eastern Star's in Marlette. After her retirement from teaching she tutored many students in the area. She is survived by two sons; Bill (Lynn) Ross of Cadillac, Jim (Doreen) Ross of Marlette, one daughter; Moreen Greenlick of Grand Blanc, two brothers; Max (Jean) Wagoner of Kentucky, Barry (Mary) Wagoner of Whitemore Lake, one son-in-law; Rocco Tenaglia of Lapeer, special friend & relative; Maxine Ganyard of Albuquerque, NM, 7 grandchildren; Scott Franzel, Todd Franzel, Ben Ross, Christen Ross, David Ross, Nicholas Ross and Andrew Ross, 12 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Bernice E. Johnson, age 97, of Adrian passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Provincial House. Bernice was born May 16, 1911, in Raisin Township, the only child of Edward and Elvira (Hasley) Wahl. On July 9, 1977, Bernice married I. C. “Johnnie” Johnson in Adrian. Johnnie, her husband of more than 31 years, survives. Bernie worked in the housekeeping department at Bixby Medical Center for many years, retiring in 1976. She was a life member of Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Bernie loved to dance and was well-known for her wonderful pies. In addition to her husband, Bernie is survived by her stepchildren, Delores (Tom) Schultz of Warren, Pa., Linda Gentry of Adrian, Richard (Marty) Johnson of Lander, Wyo., and Mary Jo (Richard) Jackson of Palmyra; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Reinhart Malzahn. The funeral service for Bernie will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Charles Joseph “Chuck” Salek, age 76, of Bronson, Mich., died peacefully in the early morning hours Thursday, March 12, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 24, 1932, in Berwyn, Ill., a son of Charles and Florence (Denk) Salek.  His family moved from the Chicago area to Constantine, Michigan during the 1940s. Chuck graduated from Constantine High School in 1950. He then served four years in the U.S. Navy, where he participated in boxing, underwater welding and demolition. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1955 as a 3rd class metalsmith. Charles married Julie Ann Leppich on Jan. 21, 1956, in Bronson. He is survived by Julie,  his wife of 53 years; his son and daughter-in-law, Charles “Chick” and Deb Salek of Bronson,  daughter Loraine Painter of Bronson, daughters and sons-in-law Diane and John Baker of Bronson, Kara and Charles Hieber of Manchester and Jacqueline and Joseph Hensell of Battle Creek; and 11 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his son, Kurt Salek; his two sisters, Joan and Grace; and his parents. Chuck’s hobbies included drag racing, hot rodding and tuning cars in the 1960s. He was employed as a five color lithographer for National Carbon Coated; he was a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service, spotted trailers for Associated Truck Lines and in general was a “jack of all trades.” He retired in the 1980s in order to farm full-time, and he had a love for his animals and hunted the land he farmed.  He was a member of the Teamsters Union, the Elks and the American Legion. Charles truly enjoyed life and included his children in all his hobbies and activities.  Through his example and guidance, he taught his family many life lessons. At the request of his family, memories and stories can be shared from 2-6 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday.  Memorial donations are suggested to the Bronson Post 259, American Legion. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson, with the Rev. Fr. Richard A. Fritz officiating. Interment will follow in Matteson Township Cemetery.

Connie C. Paxson, 68, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, March 9, 2009, at her home. She was born Jan. 1, 1941, in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, to Julian and Romanita (Martinez) Torres. She was married in 1958 to Roman Irizarry and he preceded her in death in 1986. She was married July 6, 1993, to Gary Paxson and he survives. Surviving besides her husband Gary are two daughters, Marie Carter Gomez of Archbold, Ohio and Leslie (Milton) Hoffman of Addison; a son, Raymond Irizarry of Findlay, Ohio; 18 brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Connie was also preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers. Funeral services for Connie C. Paxson will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Dan Pann officiating. Interment will take place at a later date.  The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service Thursday at the funeral home. Dale Morrissey

MORRISSEY, Dale - Age 73, of Richland, MI and Naples, FL died at Moorings Park in Naples on March 4, 2009 after a long illness. He was born February 5, 1936 in Flint, MI to Vaughn Morrissey M.D. and Leona (Gray) Morrissey. Dale was preceded in death by his sister, Janice Schuen. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia (nee Palmer). They were united in marriage on June 16, 1961. Also surviving are his children, Stephen (Michelle) Morrissey of Naples, FL and Alan "Alex" Morrissey of Plainwell, MI; granddaughter, Morgan Morrissey; nephews, John Schuen, James Schuen; nieces, Kristen Schuen and Katherine Deighan. Dale lived in a variety of communities and preferred small towns and villages to big cities. His favorite childhood memory is of growing up in Frankfort, MI in the late 40s when he spent summers with his grandparents, Stephen and Ada Morrissey. Beginning in the early 60s we visited my in-laws in Naples over the Christmas holidays. Although Naples is much larger now, the character of the community has been retained. We lived in a small resort town in Michigan about an hour from where I worked. Great during the summer, but not much going on during the winter months, and it was a long drive to get anywhere. He graduated from the University of Michigan, B.A., M.S. and Ohio University M.A., M.B.A.. While a graduate assistant in college, Dale tutored foreign students, and with graduate work in Physiology, Chemistry, Industrial Psychology and Economics, he pursued a career in the international branch of the pharmaceutical industry. During his career he worked for Eli Lilly in Indianapolis as well as the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, MI. Marketing Research and Strategic Planning were specific areas of interest and he also taught evening classes in both subjects at Western Michigan University. In Michigan, Dale was president of the lake association at Gull Lake, a Life Member and volunteer guide at the Gilmore Car Museum and member of the 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen Sports Car Club'. In addition, Dale was also a founding member of the Irish-American club of Kalamazoo. In Naples, Dale was a member of the 'Minor League'. A memorial service at First Presbyterian Church, Richland, MI is being planned for the summer. Donald E. Ball, 84, of Quincy, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. Born Aug. 7, 1924 in Branch County, he was the son of Frank and Effie (Gould) Ball. Donald served in the US Army (3rd Division) during WWII and belonged to the Quincy American Legion. He worked many years as a driver for McLain’s Transport, delivering Bob Evans products and Game-Time products. In later years, he worked as a mechanic at McLain’s. Donald also enjoyed operating a farm with his family and raising beef cattle. Survivors include his wife Virginia (Benjamin) Ball, whom he married June 2, 1946, daughter Edith Elaine Patternson of Kinderhook, sons Donald J. Ball of Quincy, Robert E. (Diana) Ball of Rantou, Ill., Kenneth J. (Terri) Ball of Quincy and Joseph L. Ball of Quincy, 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy. Visitation is scheduled Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial in California Corners Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Quincy American Legion “Project Christmas” or a charity of one’s choice.

Dr. Marvin E. Vercler, DO, age 76, of Constantine, passed away peacefully Monday, March 9, 2009, at his home. On May 15, 1932, he was born on a farm near Chenoa, Ill., the son of Rudolph and Mildred (Chapman) Vercler. He attended elementary in a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Chenoa High School. Marvin studied pre-professional education for three years at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman University) and then graduated after four years from the Kansas City College of Osteopathy & Surgery in 1957. Marvin interned at South Bend Osteopathic Hospital and practiced with physicians at the Culver Clinic in Culver, Ind.  He then practiced with Dr. Raymond Houghton at the White Pigeon Clinic for six months. Following this, he opened his own practice in Constantine in April 1960 where he has continued general practice to this day. On Dec. 2, 1951, Marvin married Gayle Dunham. He later married Joan (Busch) Olsen on July 5, 1971 in South Haven. Marvin enjoyed local history and worked with the Governor Barry Historical Society for 38 years, where he served as president since 1980. He was also a member of the St. Joseph County Historical Society for 35 years, where he was Historian of the Year in 1985 and served as president from 1985 - 1987. He was Constantine Citizen of the Year in 1975, historian for the Village of Constantine since 1979, Lifetime Honorary Fireman of the local fire department and served two terms on the Constantine School Board. Marvin was a former member of the Rotary Club for more than 30 years, serving as president from 1970-1971 and was a Paul Harris Recipient. In 2003 Marvin received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Village of Constantine. Surviving Marvin are his wife, Joan Vercler of Constantine; daughters, Patsy (Michael) Wertz and Chrissie Lusk; sons, Mark (Gayle) Vercler, Paul Vercler, and Phillip Vercler; stepchildren, Jenny (David) Williams, Michael (Laurie) Olsen and Mark (Melanie) Olsen; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Josephine) Vercler and Francis (Helen) Vercler; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Joseph Vercler in infancy and grandson Zackary Edward Lusk. Relatives and friends will be received Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine. Freddie L.  Rinehart, age 58, of Bronson, died Thursday morning, March 12, 2009 at his home after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was born Aug. 11, 1950 in Coldwater, son of Floyd and Mary (Lane) Rinehart and was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Bronson High School in 1969, where he was a member of the FFA. He married Esther Metzger on Sept. 25, 1976 at Pleasant Hill. They divorced in June 2001. Freddie worked at Grumman-Olson in Sturgis for 18 years and has been on disability for the past ten years. He was a member of the North American Hunting Club and enjoyed arrowhead hunting, collecting different collections and anything out of doors. He was an American History buff, specializing in Civil War information and also the American Presidents. Surviving are his sons Kenneth Rinehart of Burr Oak, William Rinehart of Bronson, Jerry Rinehart of Bronson and son and daughter-in-law Don and April Rinehart of Burr Oak; four grandchildren; his mother Mary Rinehart of Bronson; his sisters Becky Wood and Rose Jordan, both of Bronson; his brothers Russell Rinehart of Howe, Ind., Floyd “Chip” Rinehart of North Carolina, Dave Rinehart and Dan Rinehart, both of Bronson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth Rinehart, his father Floyd Rinehart and his nephew Thomas Wood. Jerry was a Master Plumber for many years and owned his own business, which was started by his father. He was a Life Member of the Harbor Beach Gun Club, was on baseball teams for many years as well as many bowling teams. He loved his dogs and pheasant hunting. He never missed an opening day of pheasant hunting. Helene Schreur, age 97, of Holland, went to be with her Lord and Savior March 10, 2009, at Providence Health Care of Zeeland. Helene was born October 2, 1911, the daughter of Gerrit and Mary Styf in Rusk, MI. On March 28, 1931 she married John Schreur Sr. She was a sales clerk at the JC Penney Company in Downtown Holland for over 25 years.  She was a member of Central Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Holland where she and her husband worshipped with their family all their married life and raised their children to love the Lord. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, John Schreur, in 1984; son, Paul and his wife, Margaret; sons-in-law, Bill Simpson and Matt Kleinjan; daughter-in-law, Pat Schreur; grandson, Richard Schreur; and siblings, Fannie and Bud Alpers, and Arnold and Angie Styf. Her family includes her children, Myra and Ron Van Kuiken of Jamestown, Lois Kleinjan of Holland, John and Martha Schreur of Portage, Ivan  and Ruth Schreur of St. Petersburg, FL, Alan and Gwen Schreur of King of Prussia, PA; 24 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be Saturday, March 14, 2009, 11 a.m. at  Central Ave CRC Church, #1 Graves Place, Holland with  Rev. James Stevens Staten, 47, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009, in Hillsdale.  Steven (affectionately known as “BLUE” to his friends and family) was born April 29, 1961 in Coldwater to Donald and Clara (Phyllis Stevens) Staten.  He was a 1979 graduate of Litchfield High School and a 20+ year employee at DCA Food Industries (Stock’s Mill) facility.  After closure of the Hillsdale manufacturing facility, he became an over-the-road long haul semi driver.  Steven was a lifelong resident of the southern Michigan area where he was an avid sportsman, his favorites being coon and deer hunting. Steve is survived by his parents Clara Iles of Litchfield and Donald (Phyllis) Staten of Springport; one sister, Deborah (Donald) Campbell of Galion, Ohio; two brothers, Aaron (Lisa) Staten of Litchfield and Barron (Carolyn) Staten of Indianapolis, Ind.; one niece, Kathryn (Matthew) Campbell-Thomas of Homer; five nephews, Kyle (Lacey) Campbell of Homer, Christopher and Nicholas Staten of Jonesville, Nathaniel Staten of Albion and Bradley Chapman of Quincy. Jane Severson, 90, of Holland, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Resthaven Care Center in Holland.  Jane was born October 19, 1918 in Madison, Wisconsin, to Merle and Ethel Nicholson.  Jane attended the University of Wisconsin and married A.T. Severson.  In 1951, Jane and A.T. moved to Holland and were members of the First United Methodist Church.  Jane also served in Holland Hospital Auxiliary, was a member of the PEO Sisterhood and the Questers.  She was preceded in death by her husband, A.T. Severson, in 1982.  Jane is survived by her daughter, Sue and Jack Dozeman of Holland; her son, Thor and Alexandra Severson of Sacramento, CA; grandchildren, Amanda and Matthew Ahearn, Ted and Tania Dozeman, Nils Severson, Emma Severson; great-grandchildren,  Samuel, Elizabeth and Gabriella Ahearn, Elliot and Sebastian Dozeman; sister, Alice and Earl Farwell of Beaverdam, Wisconsin. Janice M. Garmon, age 68, of Adrian passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center. Janice was born Nov. 5, 1940, in Adrian, the daughter of Clifton and Ella Mae (French) Stevens. She graduated from Sand Creek High School with the Class of 1960. On June 5, 1960, Janice married Donald Garmon in Jasper. Don, her friend since second grade and husband of more than 48 years, survives. Janice worked at Haskell Insurance Agency and in the accounting department for Saga Food Service at Siena Heights University. In 1998, she retired from Wacker Silicones where she had worked for 19 years. For many years Janice served as president of the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association where she was active organizing telethons and fund raising events for CB operators. She was also a leader for Bluebirds and Campfire Girls for many years. Janice’s greatest love was spending time with her family. Janice looked forward to Thursday brunches with her friends and dinners at the Family Kitchen. She enjoyed watching Food TV, Top Chef and Project Runway. Janice loved Elvis. She taught herself to crochet and, over the years, many Bixby babies received her beautifully made hats and blankets. In addition to her husband, Janice is survived by her daughter, Cindy Tomlin of Adrian; and her sister, Jane (Eugene) Boss, also of Adrian. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son-in-law, Bruce Tomlin; and a brother, Jerry Stevens. The funeral service for Janice will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Brundage officiating. Burial will follow at Lenawee Hills Memorial Park. John “Marvin” Klump, 71. of Metamora, Ohio, passed away Tuesday morning March 10, 2009, at home, with his loving wife of 53 years by his side. Marvin was born Sept. 7, 1937, to parents J. Wesley and Marie (Tipton) Klump in Adrian, Mich.  He was a 1955 graduate of Metamora High School. Marvin married Susie (Hiatt) Klump on Sept. 17, 1955, and she survives him. Marvin was a life long self-employed farmer. He also worked for the Soil & Conservation Department for 15 years. He was proud to have served with the National Guard for more than three years. Marvin loved to do woodworking, fish in his pond, cook and make homemade ice cream with his grandchildren. He enjoyed the out-of-doors and gardening. Marvin loved to travel in his truck and RV. He was a member of the Toledo Elks Lodge for 35 years and the Adrian Moose Lodge for 39 years. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Susie; daughters, Melinda (John) Schmidt of Jasper, Kristina (Stephen) Wisner of Sylvania, Ohio, Jennifer (Raymond) Klepacz of Onsted; grandchildren, Jolene (Jeff) Tanner, Jerod (Sarah) Schmidt, Alex Wisner, Olivia Wisner, Samantha Klepacz and Jessica Klepacz; great-grandchildren whom he adored, McKenzie, Adam and Brooklynn Schmidt, Jack and Julianna Tanner; a sister, Marjorie (Richard) VanValkenburg, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Ohm, age 75 years of Jerome, passed away suddenly Sunday, March 8, 2009 at his winter home in Bull Head City, Ariz.  Kenneth was born on Aug. 1, 1933 in Mayer, Minn., the son of Elmer and Alline (Zabel) Ohm.  He married Marlene A. Lugibihl on Aug. 13, 1955 in Pandora, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on July 27, 2004. Ken lived his early life in Mayer, Minn., and then he lived in Pandora, Ohio for several years.  He then lived in the Jerome area since 1974.  Ken owned and operated Ken’s Marathon in Pandora, Ohio from 1963-1972 and then he owned and operated Larry’s Service Center from 1974-1984.  He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy. Surviving are four sons, Douglas (Paula) Ohm of Jerome, Steven (Christina Schaffer) Ohm of Gaylord, Craig (Karry) Ohm of Somerset Center, Kevin (Raina) Ohm of Pittsford; Ken’s companion, Judy McClain of Jerome; ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin (Sharon) Ohm of Watertown, Minn.; two sisters, Betty (Orville) Wilkins of Plato, Minn., Sandra (Stan) Heldt of Mayer, Minn.; Ken’s mother, Alline Ohm of Waconia, Minn., several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, his father, one sister, Dorothy Hasse. Fackler, 90, passed away  Friday, March 6, 2009 at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home in Montpelier, Ohio, where he has been a resident for the past three years.  He was born Aug. 25, 1918, in Amboy Township to Lawrence and Bertha (Mohr) Fackler. On June 15, 1937 he married Goldie M. Traxler in Angola Ind., and she precedes him in death on Jan. 24, 2004. Lavohn was a graduate of Waldron High School.  He lived and worked his entire life in Pioneer, Ohio, and the surrounding  area.  He was employed at Mobil Oil service station in his younger years, then farming and carpentry, and then retiring on their farm in rural Camden. He is survived by two sons, Richard (and wife Norma) of Camden and Neil (and wife Loa) of Pioneer; two daughters Mrs. Allen (“Bobbie”) Clark of Pioneer and Mrs. Jerry (Beth) Emens of Camden; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; one brother, George at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home; two sisters, Eloise Thomas of Defiance, Ohio, and Betty Goodwin of Ponco City, Okla.; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Fackler and Mabel Fackler both of Pioneer; a brother-in-law, Richard Grube of Defiance; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Loren and Charles; and one sister Evelyn Grube. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson Funeral Home in Pioneer. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Pioneer United Methodist Church in Pioneer with Pastor Michael Raypholtz to officiate. The interment will be at Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer.  Memorials can be made to the C.H. & W.C. – Hospice or the Pioneer United Methodist Church.

Lee Harker, age 53, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, March 9, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 5, 1955, in Sturgis, Mich., a son to Max and Jacqueline (Carpenter) Harker. Lee was a life long resident of Sturgis and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1973. On July 31, 1976, he married Cheryl Wallick in Sturgis. Lee owned and operated with his brother Mark, Northern Cashway Lumber Company in Howe, Ind. Nearly all of Lee’s working life was at the lumber company. He had also been involved in the construction business. He was a true outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing and kayaking. Lee was a Life member of the B.P.O.Elks #1381 and also held memberships in Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association and the Mighty Layout Boys (a waterfowl organization). Lee had many interests and involvements but what he cherished most in his life was his two grandsons, Blake and Brady. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Cheryl; one daughter, Bridget (Bud) Hickman of Sturgis; one son, Max (Aya) Harker of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren, Blake, Brady and Hope Hickman; mother, Jacqueline Harker of Sturgis; two sisters, Karen Frutig of Livonia and Sherry (Ken) Link of Sturgis; one brother, Mark (Beverly) Harker of Bronson and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His father and infant brother, Craig Harker, preceded him in death. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Lee Harker will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Sturgis Wesleyan Church, 907 N. Nottawa St., Sturgis. The Rev. Canon Meredith Hunt will officiate. Levi Hudson Whitlock North Branch Levi Hudson Whitlock, 79, of North Branch for 15 years (formerly of Lapeer) passed away Saturday (March 7, 2009). He was born November 16, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo., to Levi and Elizabeth (Lamb) Whitlock. He married Audrey Bartell on November 7, 1977 in Lapeer. Mr. Whitlock proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War, followed by service in the reserves. Levi trucked test and engineering vehicles to the proving grounds for General Motors, retiring in 1994 after 29 years. He was a good cook and loved doing it. Levi also enjoyed traveling, hunting and camping. Beth was born November 2, 1924 in Port Huron, Michigan, the first of four children born to Basil George and Thelma Lucile (Berkeley) Tilley. Beth majored in art at the University of Michigan and married Richard Olver Smith on September 29, 1945 in Port Huron. Later Beth graduated from Michigan State University with bachelor and master degrees in Education. A lifelong member of The Community of Church Christ, Beth lived her faith by example and through her kind and generous spirit. She loved her family, friends, art and learning. Brother to William Murtha. Bob loved his life on the Lake in Traverse City where he was surrounded by his beautiful flower gardens and birds. He will always be remembered by his sense of humor and as a loving husband, father and friend. Mark spent his early childhood in Colon, Mich., and moved to Bronson, Mich., where he graduated from Bronson High School with the class of 1980. He has resided in Sturgis for the past 10 years. On Nov. 18, 1999, in LasVegas, NV, he married Dawn (Norton) Ritter. Mark had been employed for 13 years at Ross Laboratories in Sturgis and previous to that at Vanguard in Colon. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, collecting Hot Wheels, bass fishing, hunting, and spending time with his children, step-children and family. Surviving are his wife, Dawn; two children, Evan and Caitlin Webb, both of Colon; three brothers, Scott (Kathy) Webb of Romulus, Mich., Philip Sponsler of Bronson, and Mike Webb of Colon; one sister, Nicole (Steve) Tomlinson of Colon; two step-children, Adam and Shannon Ritter both of Sturgis; step-father, Jay Sponsler of Bronson; and step-mother, Donna Webb of Coldwater; and several nieces and nephews. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. She retired from the American Red Cross following many years of dedicated service and employment as office manager of the Sturgis and Centreville offices. Prior to joining the Red Cross she had been employed several years as a floor lady at M&R Laboratories in Sturgis. She was a member of the Sturgis Church of Christ and was a staunch Democrat. She is survived by one son, R. Dean Amos of East Windsor, Conn.; three grandchildren, Joel David Amos of San Diego, Calif., Lauri Jean Warble of St. Louis, Mo., and Lindy Arpante of Brooklyn, NY; two nephews, David Morse of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Dennis Morse of Jenison, Mich. ANDERSON, Nina O. Of Galesburg Passed away March 10, 2009 at Lifespan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek. She was born April 19, 1930 in Galesburg, MI to the late Orrin and Francis (Wilkins) Spencer. Nina was united in marriage on August 26, 1973, to Ronald Anderson, who survives. She was very active with the Balloon Festival of Battle Creek and was on the committee for the VIP tent. She was active in the Taste of Battle Creek for many years. Her favorite pastime was crocheting and was an avid reader. Also surviving Nina are her children, Dawn (James) Smith of Tucson, AZ, Robert (Janet) Canavan of Buchannan, MI, Deborah (Gary) Gross of Battle Creek, Scott Canavan of Augusta and Donald (Pam) Canavan of Orlando, FL; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Neldon (Marie) Spencer; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Steven Byrd. Also preceding her in death were her children, Ronald and John Canavan and Diane Smith; brother, Robert Wilkins. No visitation is scheduled. Of Owosso, formerly of Roscommon and Center Line, age 94, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Central Michigan Community Hospital. Mr. Pomante was a faithful husband to his loving wife Rosemary for over 70 years. Sal loved writing poetry, listening to classical music and playing violin as a young man. An honest and spiritual man, he lived his life adhering to strong traditional moral and ethical values. Sal enjoyed hunting in earlier years and going to the many Michigan casinos. Boys Town was his favorite charity. Sal achieved his lifelong dream by becoming a Class "A" member of the P.G.A. (Professional Golfers Association). Sal was the oldest of twelve children. Surviving are: children, Sal "JR" (Margaret Backstrand), Frances (James) Schimmel and Michael (Betty); eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother and six sisters; numerous nieces and nephews and closest friend, Doug Jetter of North Carolina. Mr. Pomante was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosemary; and four brothers. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1227 E. Bristol Road, Burton, MI with Fr. Timothy MacDonald officiating. Mr. Pomante will lie in state at the church from 9 a.m. Saturday until time of services. Peter B. Schlaud Jr. 1938-2009 Peter B. Schlaud Jr., 71, Bad Axe, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born on February 16, 1938 in North Branch, son of the late Peter and Stella (Young) Schlaud Sr. Pete graduated from North Branch High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany as a Military Policeman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, country music, playing cards and eating at Big Boy. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Pete worked at Marlette Coach in Marlette after coming home from the the Army, until the factory closed and he moved to Louisiana where he was the head maintenance man in a hospital. When the hurricane hit in 2005, he lost everything and moved to Bad Axe and lived with his sister and brother-in-law, John and Rita Guigar. He is survived by adopted son, Richard Schlaud, Kingston; foster daughter, Jeanette (Ron) Yaroch, Marlette; sister, Rita (John) Guigar, Bad Axe; brother, Charlie(Sandy) Schlaud, Marlette and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Schlaud. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Fr. Rob Howe, pastor, will officiate. Interment will take place in North Branch. Friends may call at Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the service time at 11 a.m. Arrangements were handled by the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe.

Robert was a lifelong area farmer, sold Pioneer Seed Corn and was a member of the MMPA. Mr. McAuliffe was born August 8, 1933 in Flint, the son of Augustine and Clara (Kleinfeld) McAuliffe. He retired from General Motors in Skilled Trades Welder and was a former reserve police officer for the City of Flint. Mr. McAuliffe was a very generous man who volunteered at area senior citizens homes playing music with his brother, Joe. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and was a black belt in Judo. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and had formerly attended St. Luke Catholic Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He was a loving and caring father to: six children, Thomas (Cathy) of Gaines, Timothy (Jamie) of GA, Judith (James) Richardson of OH, Blaine (Jacqueline) of WA, Phillip of Flint, Jacob (Alicia) of Flint; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; four siblings, Mickey Birkmeier, Mike McAuliffe, Bibiana Berger, Rita Genegski; sister-in-law, Virginia McAuliffe; many nieces and nephews. VIGLIOTTI RALPH JR 

Passed away on March 10, 2009. Born in Detroit, June 18, 1914. Ralph was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anne, after 57 years of marriage. He is survived by his children; Beth Bradbury, R. Thomas (Maureen), Mary McHale (the late Christopher), Anne Cesario (Mark), grandchildren, Kevin, Mary Grace, Ellen, and Tom, and his devoted caregiver, Jessie R. Perry. After graduation from Eastern High School, Ralph attended University of Detroit and Michigan State University. An ardent athlete, he was a member of the U.S. Olympic rowing team in 1940, however, World War II forced the cancellation of the games. He continued rowing at the Detroit Boat Club well into his 80's. He was drafted into the Army in 1941 and saw active duty in the Pacific and European theaters during World War II. Ralph participated in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge; and was awarded the Bronze Star with OLC, two Purple Hearts, and Croix de Guerre with Silver Star for his participation in the liberation of France. He rose to the rank of Captain during his years of service. Ralph began his real estate career with his father, Ralph, Sr. in 1939 selling residential properties on Detroit's east side. After his World War II service he continued in residential sales until 1949 when he formed his own company specializing in commercial - industrial real estate. He served as president of Detroit Board of Realtors (1967), as Chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeals of Detroit, President of the Michigan Chapter of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors, and Chairman of the Detroit - Wayne County Joint Building Authority. He was a member of the The American Legion - Cadillac Post, the 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion Association - D Company; and long time member of the Detroit Boat Club. A happy hour will be held at the Grosse Pointe Hunt Club, 655 Cook Road, Grosse Pointe, on Friday, March 13, 2009, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, 1820 Mt. Virginia Braxmaier of Hillsdale passed away Monday, March 9, 2009 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born Dec. 10, 1925 in Battle Creek the daughter of Clinton and Merle (Henry) Dove. She married Don Braxmaier on April 21, 1945 and he preceded her in death on April 1, 1974. She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Krista and one brother, Jerry. She is survived by one brother, Buster; one sister, Deanna; three children, Dave (Amy) Braxmaier, Dean (Crista) Braxmaier and Laurie Burton; three grandchildren, David and Christopher (Tammy) Braxmaier and Jane O’Connell and six great-grandchildren, Josh, Jesse, Tyler, Chase and Brendan Braxmaier and David O’Connell. A graveside funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Virginia Braxmaier will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Lakeview Cemetery in Hillsdale with Jeremiah Hodshire officiating. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.


 


 

Virginia Schave 1929-2009 Virginia Schave, 79, Westland, formerly of Port Hope, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Livonia She was born on August 30, 1929 in Alabaster, to the late Harlan and Emma (Graf) Brown. Virginia and Wallace Schave were united in marriage on December 6, 1947. She loved to shop and always made sure that the house was kept clean. She loved her family and was a good Christian with strong faith. She is survived by her husband Wallace, Westland; four children, Aaron Schave, Las Vegas, Nev., Ray (Gail) Schave, Westland, Lynne (Gary) Dickens, Westland and Lori (David) Parcha, Anchorage, Alaska; six grandchildren, Jason Dickens, Corey Schave, Justin Schave, Brionna Love, Aaron Parcha and Tyler Parcha; two brothers, Arnold (Elaine) Brown, Port Hope and Larry (Pat) Brown, St. Clair and sister-in-law, Arlene Brown, Port Hope. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Brown and Donald Brown. Funeral services were held Monday, March 9, 2009 in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Inc., Harbor Beach. Rev. Greg Eilers, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Port Hope, officiated with burial in Rock Falls Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach.

Wilbur  Eash Jr., 74, of Centreville, Mich., passed away  Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at Three Rivers Health Hospice. He  was born on July 26, 1934,  in Marcellus, a son of Wilber J.  and Helen Marie (Golden) Eash. Wilbur attended Centreville Schools.  He worked as a shear operator at Stoutco in Bristol, Ind. Wilbur will always be remembered for this sense of humor and joke-telling. Surviving are his daughters,  Sandra (Michael) Berry of Bristol, Brenda (Rick Harkins) Sias of Edwardsburg; a son,  Tim (Penny) Eash, of White Pigeon; a brother,  Samuel Eash, Centreville; three stepchildren; grandchildren Zach Gardiner, Jessica Weatherwax, Justin Sivley, Ashely Eash, Chris Sias, Michael Eash and Heather Harkin; and great grandchildren Ricky, Jenny and Alexiana Gardiner. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Peggy Eash; a son, William E. Eash; and a great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Eash.  Wilbur was a direct descendant of the Sacket family, who immigrated to the United States in the 1630s. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. March 21 at Chapel Hill Missionary Church, 14525 Chapel Hill Road, Union, with Pastor Don Matteson officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
