Charles Joseph “Chuck” Salek, age 76, of Bronson, Mich., died peacefully in the early morning hours Thursday, March 12, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 24, 1932, in Berwyn, Ill., a son of Charles and Florence (Denk) Salek.  His family moved from the Chicago area to Constantine, Michigan during the 1940s. Chuck graduated from Constantine High School in 1950. He then served four years in the U.S. Navy, where he participated in boxing, underwater welding and demolition. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1955 as a 3rd class metalsmith. Charles married Julie Ann Leppich on Jan. 21, 1956, in Bronson. He is survived by Julie,  his wife of 53 years; his son and daughter-in-law, Charles “Chick” and Deb Salek of Bronson,  daughter Loraine Painter of Bronson, daughters and sons-in-law Diane and John Baker of Bronson, Kara and Charles Hieber of Manchester and Jacqueline and Joseph Hensell of Battle Creek; and 11 grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his son, Kurt Salek; his two sisters, Joan and Grace; and his parents. Chuck’s hobbies included drag racing, hot rodding and tuning cars in the 1960s. He was employed as a five color lithographer for National Carbon Coated; he was a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service, spotted trailers for Associated Truck Lines and in general was a “jack of all trades.” He retired in the 1980s in order to farm full-time, and he had a love for his animals and hunted the land he farmed.  He was a member of the Teamsters Union, the Elks and the American Legion. Charles truly enjoyed life and included his children in all his hobbies and activities.  Through his example and guidance, he taught his family many life lessons. At the request of his family, memories and stories can be shared from 2-6 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Sunday.  Memorial donations are suggested to the Bronson Post 259, American Legion. Connie C. Paxson, 68, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, March 9, 2009, at her home. She was born Jan. 1, 1941, in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, to Julian and Romanita (Martinez) Torres. She was married in 1958 to Roman Irizarry and he preceded her in death in 1986. She was married July 6, 1993, to Gary Paxson and he survives. Surviving besides her husband Gary are two daughters, Marie Carter Gomez of Archbold, Ohio and Leslie (Milton) Hoffman of Addison; a son, Raymond Irizarry of Findlay, Ohio; 18 brothers and sisters; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Connie was also preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers. Funeral services for Connie C. Paxson will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Dan Pann officiating. Donald E. Ball, 84, of Quincy, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.  Born Aug. 7, 1924 in Branch County, he was the son of Frank and Effie (Gould) Ball.  Donald served in the U.S. Army (3rd Division) during World War II and belonged to the Quincy American Legion.  He worked many years as a driver for McLain’s Transport, delivering Bob Evans products and Game-Time products.  In later years he worked as a mechanic at McLain’s.  Donald also enjoyed operating a farm with his family and raising beef cattle.  Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Benjamin) Ball, whom he married June 2, 1946; one daughter, Edith Elaine Patternson of Kinderhook, four sons, Donald J. Ball of Quincy, Robert E. (Diana) Ball of Rantou, Ill., Kenneth J. (Terri) Ball of Quincy, Joseph L. Ball of Quincy; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy. Freddie L.  Rinehart, age 58, of Bronson, died Thursday morning, March 12, 2009 at his home after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was born Aug. 11, 1950 in Coldwater, son of Floyd and Mary (Lane) Rinehart and was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Bronson High School in 1969, where he was a member of the FFA. He married Esther Metzger on Sept. 25, 1976 at Pleasant Hill. They divorced in June 2001. Freddie worked at Grumman-Olson in Sturgis for 18 years and has been on disability for the past ten years. He was a member of the North American Hunting Club and enjoyed arrowhead hunting, collecting different collections and anything out of doors. He was an American History buff, specializing in Civil War information and also the American Presidents. Surviving are his sons Kenneth Rinehart of Burr Oak, William Rinehart of Bronson, Jerry Rinehart of Bronson and son and daughter-in-law Don and April Rinehart of Burr Oak; four grandchildren; his mother Mary Rinehart of Bronson; his sisters Becky Wood and Rose Jordan, both of Bronson; his brothers Russell Rinehart of Howe, Ind., Floyd “Chip” Rinehart of North Carolina, Dave Rinehart and Dan Rinehart, both of Bronson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth Rinehart, his father Floyd Rinehart and his nephew Thomas Wood. George C. Musolff 1919-2009 George C. Musolff, 89, Bad Axe, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Huron Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe. He was born on June 8, 1919 in South Lyons, son of the late Frederick and Lena (Fibranz) Musolff. He was united in marriage to Pauline Jahn on June 22, 1946. She preceded him in death on December 27, 2001. George was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe and a member of the VFW. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Pacific Campaign, Infantry 44th Division. Gerald E. Gornowich 1935-2009 Gerald "Jerry" Gornowich, 73, Harbor Beach, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2009 at his home under hospice care. He was born September 7, 1935 in Harbor Beach to the late Bruno and Julia (Woychowski) Gornowich. Jerry was a Master Plumber for many years and owned his own business, which was started by his father. He was a Life Member of the Harbor Beach Gun Club, was on baseball teams for many years as well as many bowling teams. He loved his dogs and pheasant hunting. He never missed an opening day of pheasant hunting. He is survived by his children; Kim (Dennis) Clark, Harbor Beach, Blair (Marilyn) Gornowich, Harbor Beach, Reneen Gornowich, Fla. and Jody Gornowich, Harbor Beach; four grandchildren, Tina Tageson, Douglas Gornowich, Philip Gornowich and Tyler; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Leonard (Maria) Gornowich, Harbor Beach two sisters, Marie (Robert) Batton, Detroit and Joyce (Skip) Vankirk, Detroit. Gerald Anthony “Jerry” Kaluzny, age 79 of Mendon, died Friday, March 13, 2009, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.  He was born in Detroit on Aug. 5, 1929, the son of the late Albert and Mary (Fary) Kalauzny and attended schools in the Detroit area. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He then married Jeanette Poteau on Nov. 25, 1954 in Wayne, Mich.  Jeanette died in 2007. Jerry owned and operated Jerry’s Marathon in Plymouth before going to work for Bendix Aerospace.  He worked as a mechanic for Ford Motor Company for 20 years, retiring to Mendon in 1990.  In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Following his retirement, he enjoyed yard work, landscaping, and bird watching.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.  Jerry was a member of the Mendon Kiwanis Club and St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon. Jerry is survived by three children, Tami Kaluzny of Mendon, Brian Kaluzny (Margaret) and Nadine Baker (Glenn), all of Mattawan;  six grandchildren, Rachael, Carolyn, and Karl Kaluzny, and Janell, Abbie, and Ben Baker;  one sister, Dolores Larson (Norman) of Wayne; two nieces and two nephews.  The family will receive friends from 1-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. There will be a Scripture Service at held 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.  The Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon with Rev. Sontag on June 8, 1957 in Gagetown. She was born December 2, 1924 in Fairhaven Twp., daughter of the late Vernon and Sophia (Kuhl) Quick. She was united in marriage to Raymond F. Krauss on August 28, 1986. He preceded her in death on December 28, 1994. Helen was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. She was also a member of the Unionville-Sebewaing Area Senior citizens group, enjoyed flowers, gardening and needlepoint. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed the Detroit Tigers. He was married to Fern Eva Roe on July 3, 1941. She preceded him in death in 1987. He married Annie Mae Radu VanLoon in May 1988 and she preceded him in death in 2005. Jack had been employed by Central Transport, retiring on April 27, 1985. He was an avid golfer and played softball as a young man. Jack is survived by two daughters, Sherry VanLoon and her husband, Elwood, of Brooklyn, Mich., and Jacqueline Lloyd of Adrian; two brothers, William Maloney of California and Donald Maloney and his wife, Carol, of California; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Jane Severson, 90, of Holland, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Resthaven Care Center in Holland.  Jane was born October 19, 1918 in Madison, Wisconsin, to Merle and Ethel Nicholson.  Jane attended the University of Wisconsin and married A.T. Severson.  In 1951, Jane and A.T. moved to Holland and were members of the First United Methodist Church.  Jane also served in Holland Hospital Auxiliary, was a member of the PEO Sisterhood and the Questers.  She was preceded in death by her husband, A.T. Janice M. Garmon, age 68, of Adrian passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center. Janice was born Nov. 5, 1940, in Adrian, the daughter of Clifton and Ella Mae (French) Stevens. She graduated from Sand Creek High School with the Class of 1960. On June 5, 1960, Janice married Donald Garmon in Jasper. Don, her friend since second grade and husband of more than 48 years, survives. Janice worked at Haskell Insurance Agency and in the accounting department for Saga Food Service at Siena Heights University. In 1998, she retired from Wacker Silicones where she had worked for 19 years. For many years Janice served as president of the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association where she was active organizing telethons and fund raising events for CB operators. She was also a leader for Bluebirds and Campfire Girls for many years. Janice’s greatest love was spending time with her family. Janice looked forward to Thursday brunches with her friends and dinners at the Family Kitchen. She enjoyed watching Food TV, Top Chef and Project Runway. Janice loved Elvis. She taught herself to crochet and, over the years, many Bixby babies received her beautifully made hats and blankets. In addition to her husband, Janice is survived by her daughter, Cindy Tomlin of Adrian; and her sister, Jane (Eugene) Boss, also of Adrian. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son-in-law, Bruce Tomlin; and a brother, Jerry Stevens. John “Marvin” Klump, 71. of Metamora, Ohio, passed away Tuesday morning March 10, 2009, at home, with his loving wife of 53 years by his side. Marvin was born Sept. 7, 1937, to parents J. Wesley and Marie (Tipton) Klump in Adrian, Mich.  He was a 1955 graduate of Metamora High School. Marvin married Susie (Hiatt) Klump on Sept. 17, 1955, and she survives him. Marvin was a life long self-employed farmer. He also worked for the Soil & Conservation Department for 15 years. He was proud to have served with the National Guard for more than three years. Marvin loved to do woodworking, fish in his pond, cook and make homemade ice cream with his grandchildren. He enjoyed the out-of-doors and gardening. Marvin loved to travel in his truck and RV. He was a member of the Toledo Elks Lodge for 35 years and the Adrian Moose Lodge for 39 years. Kenneth E. Ohm, age 75 years of Jerome, passed away suddenly Sunday, March 8, 2009 at his winter home in Bull Head City, Ariz.  Kenneth was born on Aug. 1, 1933 in Mayer, Minn., the son of Elmer and Alline (Zabel) Ohm.  He married Marlene A. Lugibihl on Aug. 13, 1955 in Pandora, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on July 27, 2004. Ken lived his early life in Mayer, Minn., and then he lived in Pandora, Ohio for several years.  He then lived in the Jerome area since 1974.  Ken owned and operated Ken’s Marathon in Pandora, Ohio from 1963-1972 and then he owned and operated Larry’s Service Center from 1974-1984.  He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Navy. Surviving are four sons, Douglas (Paula) Ohm of Jerome, Steven (Christina Schaffer) Ohm of Gaylord, Craig (Karry) Ohm of Somerset Center, Kevin (Raina) Ohm of Pittsford; Ken’s companion, Judy McClain of Jerome; ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin (Sharon) Ohm of Watertown, Minn.; two sisters, Betty (Orville) Wilkins of Plato, Minn., Sandra (Stan) Heldt of Mayer, Minn.; Ken’s mother, Alline Ohm of Waconia, Minn., several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, his father, one sister, Dorothy Hasse. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with the Rev. Leland Irving Klatt, age 89, of Clayton passed away March 9, 2009. Leland was born May 16, 1919, in Sylvania, Ohio, the son of Ernest and Tessie (VanDoren) Klatt. On Feb. 19, 1944, he married Carmella Viola Galici in Detroit, Mich. She preceded him in death April 25, 2003. In his early years he farmed with his grandfather. He then worked in the tool and die industry for 30 years. After leaving the tool and die profession, he and Carmella became self employed in the coal business, landscaping, weed cutting, Adrian Sod Farm and the Adrian Peat Moss Farm. He was a writer of poetry and belonged to the Library of Poets in Washington, D.C. He was a devoted believer in Christ and his principles.   Leland is survived by his children, Daniel and Deborah (Fred) Sisty; grandchildren, Anthony, Andrew, Adam, Aaron, Aric, and Alan Jeffrey; great-grandchildren, Alyson, Dominic, Braydon and Lexi; and step-sister, Dorothy. Besides his wife, Carmella, Leland was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Glenn. Funeral services will be 4 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2009, at the J. Lester I. “Butch” Yinger, 64, of Jonesville, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born Jan. 23, 1945, in Hillsdale to Irving and Mary (St.John) Yinger. He was married Sept. 22, 1963, to Sharon Persons and she survives. Butch was a former employee of A.C.T. Laboratory and Essex Wire. He was a former member of the Hillsdale County Conservation Club and the Corvette Club of Bryan, Ohio. Levi Hudson Whitlock North Branch Levi Hudson Whitlock, 79, of North Branch for 15 years (formerly of Lapeer) passed away Saturday (March 7, 2009). He was born November 16, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo., to Levi and Elizabeth (Lamb) Whitlock. He married Audrey Bartell on November 7, 1977 in Lapeer. Mr. Whitlock proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Korean War, followed by service in the reserves. Levi trucked test and engineering vehicles to the proving grounds for General Motors, retiring in 1994 after 29 years. He was a good cook and loved doing it. Levi also enjoyed traveling, hunting and camping. Lyell Alvin Wagenveld, age 95, of Holland went to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday March 14, 2009 at Oak Crest Manor of Holland. Lyell was born the son of Frank and Blanche Wagenveld August 21, 1913 in Hull, North Dakota.  Lyell moved with his family to Holland Michigan in his late teenage years.  He attended Hope College for one year.  He was employed by the United States Postal office, and was the oldest retired postal worker in Michigan.  He was a long time resident of Waukazoo Woods. He was a long time member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Holland.     He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years Blanche (Van Slooten) Wagenveld in 1978, and daughter Dolores Kamphuis 1991. His family includes: daughter Charlotte and Ted Kruithoff of Holland; son Wayne and Kathy Wagenveld of Grand Rapids; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Marsha and Ken Mokma, brother-in-laws Lloyd and Lois Van Slooten, sister-in-law Amy Van Slooten;  and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A lifelong member of The Community of Church Christ, Beth lived her faith by example and through her kind and generous spirit. She loved her family, friends, art and learning. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. She was born Jan. 20, 1911, in Decatur, Ind., a daughter to the late Edward Edwin and Edith (Dean) Gilbert. Naomi had resided in Sturgis since 1951 coming from Bronson, Mich. She retired from the American Red Cross following many years of dedicated service and employment as office manager of the Sturgis and Centreville offices. Prior to joining the Red Cross she had been employed several years as a floor lady at M&R Laboratories in Sturgis. She was a member of the Sturgis Church of Christ and was a staunch Democrat. She is survived by one son, R. Dean Amos of East Windsor, Conn.; three grandchildren, Joel David Amos of San Diego, Calif., Lauri Jean Warble of St. Louis, Mo., and Lindy Arpante of Brooklyn, NY; two nephews, David Morse of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Dennis Morse of Jenison, Mich. Her parents; one brother; and one sister preceded her in death. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Paul Everett Kope, 72, of Ann Arbor, died March 10, 2009, at home. He was born Nov. 27, 1936, in Cambria. Paul was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor. Peter B. Schlaud Jr. 1938-2009 Peter B. Schlaud Jr., 71, Bad Axe, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2009 at Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe. He was born on February 16, 1938 in North Branch, son of the late Peter and Stella (Young) Schlaud Sr. Pete graduated from North Branch High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany as a Military Policeman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, country music, playing cards and eating at Big Boy. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Pete worked at Marlette Coach in Marlette after coming home from the the Army, until the factory closed and he moved to Louisiana where he was the head maintenance man in a hospital. When the hurricane hit in 2005, he lost everything and moved to Bad Axe and lived with his sister and brother-in-law, John and Rita Guigar. He is survived by adopted son, Richard Schlaud, Kingston; foster daughter, Jeanette (Ron) Yaroch, Marlette; sister, Rita (John) Guigar, Bad Axe; brother, Charlie(Sandy) Schlaud, Marlette and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald Schlaud. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bad Axe. Fr. Rob Howe, pastor, will officiate. Interment will take place in North Branch. Friends may call at Sacred Heart Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the service time at 11 a.m. Arrangements were handled by the Kaufman Funeral Home in Bad Axe. |

Robert Alvin Yesh, age 81, of Bronson, Mich., died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, March 13, 2009, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall,  following a lengthy illness. Bob was born Nov. 13, 1927, in Coldwater, son of Frank and Elizabeth (Stefanski) Yesh and was a lifelong Bronson resident. He married Jean Beverly Hungerford on Dec. 6, 1955, in South Bend, Ind.  Jean Beverly died Dec.  14, 2001. After graduation from Bronson High School, Bob joined the U.S. Army during World War II.  After the war, he worked at the former Douglas Components Company in Bronson, then drove truck.  Having an interest in law enforcement, he became a Bronson Police Officer in 1956. He went on to join the Branch County Sheriff’s Department, where he rose to the rank of sergeant and served for more than 20 years. After his retirement, he returned to the Bronson Police Department, from where he retired after a combined 30 years in law enforcement. He then took up farming full time. Bob was an avid hunter, especially looking forward to the opening day of firearms deer season.  He was a member of the NRA and actively engaged in the shooting sports and was known for his accuracy skills. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church. Surviving are his daughter Susan Stansberry of Battle Creek; his son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Debra Yesh of Eat Leroy; stepsons., Dennis (Patty) Marks of Hobe Sound, Fla., and Don (Joanne) Marks of Coldwater; stepdaughters Joyce (Milt) McNitt of Coldwater and Brenda (Jim) Wilhelm of Huntington, Ind.; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Jean Beverly, his wife of 46 years; his stepson, Jim Marks; and his brother Francis Yesh. The funeral liturgy celebrating the life of Robert A. Yesh will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson, with the Rev. Fr. Brian Stanley officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Prayers before Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. He was born May 17, 1937, in Pioneer, Ohio, to Martin V. and Blanche F. (Connolly) Grimm. He graduated from Pioneer, Ohio High School in 1956. He married Carolyn M. Moore Nov. 30, 1962 in Kunkle, Ohio and she survives. Bob retired after 30 years as a machinist for Aro Corp in Bryan in 2002. Until recently he was employed at the Montpelier Auto Auction as well as the Sunoco Station at Holiday City, rural Montpelier. Also surviving are three sons, Michael (Christy) Grimm, Waldron, William (Jodi) Grimm, Bryan and Stanley (Kris) Grimm, Alvordton; one brother, Keith (Donna) Grimm, Sherwood, Ohio; four grandchildren, Allison and Aaron Grimm, Waldron and Tiffanie and Bradley Grimm, Bryan and one sister-in-law, Jessie Grimm, Pioneer. Sadie was born the daughter of Lambert and Eva Dena Schipper in Salem Twp, MI, September 25, 1911.  She lived most of her life in the Hamilton-Zeeland area. She was a graduate of Hastings High School and Western Michigan Teacher's College.  She taught school in Monterey Twp., Salem Twp., and Bentheim School years ago. She was a 4-H leader in Overisel for many years and also in Zeeland.  She served as Sec. of Service for the Women's Missionary Conference of the Zeeland Classis. She was a former member of Women's Mission Circle, Fellowship Sunday School Class, Evergreen Commons, J.O.Y. Group (Church Seniors), Ladies Aid, and Prayer Groups at Church. She was a former member of Oakland CRC Church, and  Overisel Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school.  She is currently a member of First Reformed Church in Zeeland.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Gordon Top in 1989; and also a son-in-law, Clifford Essink 1991.    Her family includes her children, Virginia and  Rev. Dr. Roger Kleinheksel of Holland, Lois and Jerry Vander Kooi of Riverview, Isla and Dale Compagner of Hamilton; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Julia Brower; brother, Wilmur  and Joyce Schipper; in-laws, Lavina Schipper, Judy and Dirk Elferink; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Sharon attended schools in Litchfield and Homer and had worked at Hilex Controls in Litchfield, retiring in 2004 after 15 years of employment.  Her love of life included time spent with her children and grandchildren, as well as playing bingo, and hobbies of crocheting and knitting. TRAVERSE CITY — Carmel A. Glass, 85, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.Carmel was born on Friday, March 30, 1923, to the late Jacob and Nora (Morse) Spencer in Nelma, Wis. Carmel entered into marriage with Ferris Glass on Saturday, Jan. 29, 1944, in Elizabeth City, N.C.Carmel and Ferris made their home in Traverse City and watched their family grow with the addition of four children. Carmel stayed at home caring for the children and keeping the house in working order. Carmel was a good cook, making most everything from scratch for family gatherings or just an evening dinner. In earlier years she enjoyed reading and would catch up on the happenings from the daily paper.Carmel cherished her many camping trips with the family and her husband. She loved to sit by the campfire and talk, and take lazy strolls with friends and family through the woods. Carmel was quietly passionate about her faith as a member East Bay Calvary Church over the past 40 years.Carmel will be missed by many.Carmel is survived by her loving husband of over 65 years, Ferris Glass of Traverse City; two sons, Douglas Glass of Kalamazoo, Robert (Susan) Glass of Interlochen; a daughter, Barbara (Sam) Miller of Burlington, Ky.; son-in-law, Brian Smoyer of Traverse City; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ellen Cunningham, Marvel LaFranier and Wilma Schwind, all of Traverse City; as well as several in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and many other loving family members and friends.Carmel was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Rebecca Smoyer; sisters, Arvilla Stockfisch, Nina Zeits, Veronica Lewis; and a brother, E.R. "Seab" Spencer.Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at the East Bay Calvary Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Kendale Dennis will officiate. Virginia Braxmaier of Hillsdale passed away Monday, March 9, 2009 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born Dec. 10, 1925 in Battle Creek the daughter of Clinton and Merle (Henry) Dove. She married Don Braxmaier on April 21, 1945 and he preceded her in death on April 1, 1974. She was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Krista and one brother, Jerry. She is survived by one brother, Buster; one sister, Deanna; three children, Dave (Amy) Braxmaier, Dean (Crista) Braxmaier and Laurie Burton; three grandchildren, David and Christopher (Tammy) Braxmaier and Jane O’Connell and six great-grandchildren, Josh, Jesse, Tyler, Chase and Brendan Braxmaier and David O’Connell. A graveside funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Virginia Braxmaier will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Lakeview Cemetery in Hillsdale with Jeremiah Hodshire officiating. Virginia Schave 1929-2009 Virginia Schave, 79, Westland, formerly of Port Hope, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Livonia She was born on August 30, 1929 in Alabaster, to the late Harlan and Emma (Graf) Brown. Virginia and Wallace Schave were united in marriage on December 6, 1947. She loved to shop and always made sure that the house was kept clean. She loved her family and was a good Christian with strong faith. She is survived by her husband Wallace, Westland; four children, Aaron Schave, Las Vegas, Nev., Ray (Gail) Schave, Westland, Lynne (Gary) Dickens, Westland and Lori (David) Parcha, Anchorage, Alaska; six grandchildren, Jason Dickens, Corey Schave, Justin Schave, Brionna Love, Aaron Parcha and Tyler Parcha; two brothers, Arnold (Elaine) Brown, Port Hope and Larry (Pat) Brown, St. Clair and sister-in-law, Arlene Brown, Port Hope. SOPHIEA, William E. - Clarkston, MI, born January 31, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, died at his home in Clarkston, Michigan on March 13, 2009. Bill is survived by the love of his life, Norma, who would be married 60 years this June. Together they had three children, Bill (Elise), Bob, and Sandra Sophiea-Fairmont (Scott). Bill took joy in his eight grandchildren Bob Jr., Sarah, Jennifer, Alexandra, Kristopher, William, Samantha and Jeffrey and his great grandchildren Gabriel and Jackson. Bill and Norma along with their son Bob owned and operated Big Boy Restaurants in Grand Blanc and Flint. Bill, known as "Boss" was a loving husband, devoted father and a fantastic man. His easy manner drew everyone to love and respect him. Bill was a devoted Christian who worshipped at St. George Orthodox Church. After a courageous battle with cancer, Bill died at home in peace surrounded by his loving family. Donations in Bill's memory should be made to St. George Orthodox Church in Flint or the University of Michigan Hospital Oncology Center. Please join our family for a visitation at A. J.
