Andrew J. Mayernick Andrew J. Mayernick, age 93, of St. Clair Shores died November 29, 2009, in Grosse Pointe Woods. He was born November 7, 1916, in Trauger, Pa. Mr. Mayernick served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and was a district manager for the White Tower restaurant chain for many years. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gertrude; daughter, Marilyn (Kryn) Wagter; grandchildren, Jeanette (Jeffrey) Varanelli, Kristina (Daniel) Sprietzer and Andrew Mayernick; great-grandchildren, Luca and Juliana Varanelli; and siblings, Thomas Mayernick, Albert Mayernick and Catherine Kubina. He was predeceased by his son, Edward in 2003; and eight brothers and sisters. Arrangements by Kaul Funeral Home, St. Clair Shores. No funeral services have been scheduled.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Sodality Christian Mothers and St. John's Berchman. She is survived by her children, Alan (Nancy), Denise (Jerry) Searcy, Donna (Gregory) Kretz; grandchildren, Katrina, Helena, Michelle, Maria, Angela, and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Madison, Jackson, and Kennedy; siblings, Mario Cortese, Apollonia Buschmohle, Anna Moir. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald J. Lamoureux; brothers, Ralph, Duilio, and Antonio Cortese. Visitation Wednesday 4-9 p.m. A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. Memorial Mass Thursday, noon at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 20955 Bouremouth, Harper Woods. Fr. After a long and fulfilling life, Angelo Spina, 96, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 11, 2009. A 31-year resident of Sugar Springs in Gladwin, Angelo was born in Borgetto, Sicily on May 16, 1913. He came to America at age eight and lived in the Detroit area until 1978.

Avis Joan Matthews 78, of Camden, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at Country Living, Hillsdale.  She was born Sept. 20, 1931, in Hillsdale County, to Orian and Orpha (Ford) Gary Sr., and graduated from Camden High School in 1949.  Joan was a longtime employee at the Camden Post Office, first as clerk and then as postmistress until her retirement in 1991. She was an active and former member of the Mt. Union Christian Union Church where she also taught Sunday school. She was a volunteer at the Camden Library and Senior Center and served as the Camden Village clerk for many years. She is survived by: two daughters, Janice (Tom) Seely,Osseo and Janet (Ron) Reynolds, Camden; one son, Marvin (Julie) Matthews, Bryan, Ohio; two sisters, Joyce Carey,Metz, Ind. and Donna (Ken) Nugent, Muscatine, Iowa; one brother, Orian Lavern (Joyce) Gary, Jr.  Angola, Ind.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Funeral services will be 11a.m. Tuesday at the New Hope United Brethren Church in Camden with Pastor Ned Wyse officiating. Interment will follow in Camden Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Reading. Memorials are suggested to the charity of donor’s choice.

B. Dianne Bradstreet, 63 of St. Joseph, formerly of Addison, passed away on Monday Nov. 16, 2009 at her home. She was born on March 24, 1946 in Addison, to George F. Bradstreet and R. Carolyn (Kuney) Townsend. Dianne was raised in Addison, before moving to Wyoming and then Pennsylvania.  She then moved to Brownstown, Mich., for 10 years, and then spent the past 12 years in St. Joseph.  She graduated from Addison High School in 1964 and then attended Michigan State University for 3 years.  She was employed at B. Dalton Book Sellers, where she worked her way up to a store manager in her 35 years.  She was an avid book reader, enjoyed arts and crafts, country music and traveling. Surviving are one sister, Carol J. (William) Inhulsen of Brownstown; two half-brothers, Richard (Kathy) Bradstreet of Addison, Robert (Mindy) Bradstreet of Addison; one niece, Barb (Ken) Michelini, of West Bloomfield; one great-niece, Allison; one great-nephew, Logan; her step-mother Phyllis Bradstreet of Addison; several half-nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.  She was preceded in death by her parents, half-brother, half-sister and step-father. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23 at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Richard Bradstreet officiating.  Burial will take place in Church’s Corners Cemetery, Wheatland Township, Hillsdale County.  Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday. Charles Edward (Chuck) Barnes, age 63, of 5756 Deer View Road, Gretna, Va., and formerly of Centreville, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 12, 1946, in Manila, Ark., a son of the late Charley Pankney Barnes and Bertha Leola Bell Carnal Barnes. He was predeceased by three brothers, Tommy Joe Barnes, Charlie Gene Barnes and Glenn Daryl Barnes; and two sisters, Joyce Rice and Sheila Ann Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church and was a former employee of Timken, Ross Labs and the Lane Company. During his time in Centreville, he was a Cub Master and a youth sports assistant coach. Mr. Barnes enjoyed golfing, fishing, and bowling.  He is survived by his wife, Penny Pursel Barnes; a son, Bradley Barnes and wife, Tamela, of Hurt,Va.; six brothers, Lynn Barnes and wife, Mildred, Everett Barnes and wife, Nancy, Vernon Barnes, Jerry Barnes, Roy Barnes, and Alan Herrod and wife, Silke, all of Lake Wales, Fla.; a sister, Minnie Stewart of Lake Wales; and two grandsons, Ethan Barnes and Evan Barnes.   A memorial service will be conducted 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Piney Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Matt Speck.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Piney Grove Baptist Church fellowship hall and other times will be at the residence. Dale Hindes, age 72, of Adrian died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at the Defiance Inpatient Hospice Facility. He was born Feb. 18, 1937, in Addison, Mich., to Horace W. and Iva E. (Righter) Hindes. On May 28, 1960, he married Norma Ross- Robinson. She preceded him in death on April 20, 1996. Dale had been employed by Tecumseh Products, Tower Construction, Nafzinger Ice Cream, Schmidt Brothers, John’s Mansville and then later did the cemetery care at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Delta, Ohio. He also farmed for most of his life. He enjoyed camping and fishing and was a member of the Huron Hooters Camping Club. Dale is survived by two sons, Eric Hindes of Sherwood, Ohio, and Mike (Jeanette) Robinson of Delta, Ohio; a daughter, Chris (Jim) Netcher of Bryan, Ohio; a brother, Kenneth (Marjorie) Hindes of Hillsdale; a sister, Carey Hindes of Arizona; a stepsister, Chris (Steve) O’Dell of Colorado; six grandchildren, 10 great-grand­- children; his girlfriend of 11 years, Lillian Cherry of Adrian; Lillian’s children, Dolly Beverly and Randy; and a good friend, Bill Brisbin, all of Adrian. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Lucy Denny; and four brothers, Willie Hindes, George Finacle, Edson Finacle and Wilber Finacle. (Wortman) Jagger whom he married June 28, 1979; four children, Anson (Meredith) Jagger of Camden, April (Jim) Collins of Warner Robins, Ga., Dennis (Connie) Tonkel of Osseo and Cindy Wyatt of Camden; two daughters-in-law, Sandie Jagger of Camden and Peggy Jagger of Rossville, Ga.; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. Donald Jagger of San Diego, Calif.; three sisters, Phyllis Sharpsteen of Sebewaing, Mich., Ardice Casarda of Hillsdale and Sharon Hukill of San Diego, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Marguerite Jagger of Camden and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, First Sgt. Aaron Jagger and Quinn Jagger; one daughter, Wanda McMichael; one granddaughter, Stephanie Jagger; one brother, Leonard Jagger and one sister, Maxine VanWormer. Mr. Jagger was a life long resident of Camden where he enjoyed working as a farmer all his life. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and he was a member of New Hope United Brethren Church in Camden. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Dale L. Jagger will be held at New Hope United Brethren Church in Camden 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23 with the Rev. Don Gentry officiating. Interment will take place in Burg Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church in Camden. Daniel Jacob Kauffman, age 94, of Mendon, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 at Riverview Manor in Three Rivers where he had resided the past three years.  He was born in Versailles, Mo., on Sep. 20, 1915, the son of John S. and Lovina R. (Garber) Kauffman.  The family moved to Indiana where Dan graduated from Columbia City High School in 1934.  Dan was married to Virginia Wilkinson in Whitley County, Ind., on Sep. 27, 1940, and they moved to Mendon in 1946. Dan engaged in general farming and was a Pioneer and Cowbell seed corn dealer. He worked at Simpson-Lee Paper Company in Vicksburg for several years, and was also a bus driver for the Mendon school district for over 20 years. Following his retirement he continued to help his grandson on the family farm and was frequently seen mowing and cleaning the roadsides northeast of Mendon. He was a member of the Mendon Kiwanis Club where he was honored with the Hixson Award, Kiwanis’ highest honor.  He was a sixty three year member of the Mendon United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and was Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Dan is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathleen Kauffman of Mendon; a daughter and son in law, Vicki and Dale Eickhoff also of Mendon;  eight grandchildren, Matt Kauffman (Ann) of Mendon, Kelly Schumborg (Mike) and Amy Rigg (Kurt) both of Ann Arbor; Jason Eickhoff of Mendon, Brian Eickhoff of Miami, Kevin Eickhoff (Lindsey) of Byron Center, Aaron Eickhoff of Angola, and Glenn Eickhoff of Mendon;  six great-grandchildren, John and Sierra Sears, Mackenzie and Maggie Schumborg, and Emma and Molly Rigg;  two sisters, Ann Neuenschwander (Don) of Angola and Ella Male (Bill) of Winona Lake; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Kauffman of Columbia City and Marge Kauffman of Ft. Wayne; several nieces and nephews.  Dan was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia in 2006; three brothers, John, Kenyon, and Olin Kauffman; and two nephews, Craig and Rob Kauffman. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon, and from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mendon United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday Dec. 2, 2009 at the Mendon United Methodist Church with Rev. Douglas Warren Sprague, 80, of Adrian, formerly of Hudson went home to his Lord and Savior, Wednesday evening, Nov. 18, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 31, 1929, in Wright Township to Carroll and Myrna (Harris) Sprague. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan and Korea from 1952 to 1956. On March 16, 1957, he married Shirley Watson in Tecumseh and she survives. Doug had been employed by Tecumseh Products Company, Consumers Power and retired from the Adrian Public School System, where he had been employed for 16 years. Doug farmed and cared for the family farms south of Hudson most of his life. He and his wife, Shirley, owned and operated the Baker Hill Bed and Breakfast in Hudson. He enjoyed flying and had a commercial pilot’s license. Doug was a member of the Raisin Valley Friends Church where he was a trustee. He served as a member of the North Adrian Grange as well as a 4-H leader. His greatest blessing was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved, adored and prayed for every day. In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by a son, John (Tonia) Sprague of Cement City; three daughters, Jackie (Wesley) Wickham of Osseo, Michelle (Rick) Brownell of Sturgis, and Heidi (Scott) Cagle of Adrian; siblings, Donald Sprague of Toledo, Shirley Mitchinson of Grand Blanc, Alfred Sprague of Rochester Hills, Shelia (Gordon) Mitchinson of Turnbridge, Vt., Brenda (Eldon) Cattell of Clayton, and Sonja (Tom) Quinn of Dansville; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian with Pastor Brian Beck officiating. Burial will be in Lime Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Earl served in the US Army and was a veteran of World War II. He worked at Bronson Reel for 20 years, then worked as a foreman at Metal Powder Components in Coldwater for 24 years, retiring in 1990. After his retirement, Earl went to work at Dudley Lumber in Orland until July of 2001. He had been a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Church and enjoyed gardening and fishing. Mr. Lane is survived by his sons, Lynn Lane of Painsville, Ky., David (Irene) Lane and Patrick Lane, both of White Pigeon; brothers Donald (Mary) Lane of East Leroy, Rex (Shirley) Lane of White Pigeon; sister, Jean Rutter of Sturgis; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Earl W. Goike Jr. Earl W. "Buddy" Goike Jr., age 62, of Casco Township, died Sunday, November 29, 2009, at St. Johns Hospital Hospice, Detroit. He was born Tuesday, December 17, 1946, in Mount Clemens, the son of Earl Sr. and Patricia (Curtis) Goike. His marriage to Mary Hartway was Saturday, June 28, 1975, in Mount Clemens. Earl served his country with the United States Navy from 1965 to 1968 in Vietnam. He was employed as a truck driver with the Teamster Local 1038 and was recently employed by Able Precision of Harrison Township in maintenance and shipping until his retirement in January. He was a member of the AMVETS Post 29, Mount Clemens. Earl loved all sports, especially baseball and football and enjoyed playing racquetball and softball. Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary of 34 years, are two daughters and sons-in-law, Trishia and Craig Honold of Lenox Township and Allison and Michael Ternes of New Haven; three grandchildren, Landon, Cooper, and Peyton Honold; parents, Earl Sr. and Patricia Goike of Bokeelia, Fla.; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Greg and Sharon of Fla., Joe and Sally of Chesterfield, Kurt and Beth, Brad and Toni, all of Macomb, Steve and Kathy of Alpena, David and Nancy of Dubois, Pa.; twin sisters and a brother-in-law, Julie Goike of Mount Clemens and Jackie and John Roskopp of Macomb; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1991. Mrs. Finley was a lifelong resident of Coldwater and attended Camden Missionary Church. She worked for many years at the former Pants Factory and then for Servomation in Coldwater, retiring in 1979. Esther was an animal lover, she enjoyed “people,” and spending time with her friends. She loved the outdoors, especially the change of seasons, and enjoyed the time their family spent at their cottage in Helen. Esther is survived by her son Elroy and Carolyn VanNuys of Montgomery, her daughter Josie Briggs of Coldwater, her stepson Michael Finley of Coldwater, her grandchildren Rebecca Cranson, Elroy VanNuys, Jr., Tina Tanner, Tammi Jo Demecs, ten great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter. Eugene L. Harvey Sr. age 81, of Colon, passed away, Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at Sturgis Hospital.  Gene was born Aug. 15, 1928, in White Pigeon, a son to the late George R. and Gladys V. (Hackman) Harvey.  He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II.  Gene had lived most all of his adult life in the Sherwood and Colon area where he had worked for Post Cereal in Battle Creek for 32 years retiring in 1983, he had also farmed.  On Nov. 1, 1947, he married Beatrice Carpenter.  She preceded him in death on July 31, 1977.  Later on Aug. 2, 1986, he married Margaret (Seafert) Miller in Colon.  She preceded him in death on Jan. 4, 2008.  He was a member of the Colon American Legion Post #454, Colon Masonic Lodge, Sturgis V.F.W. Post #1355, and the Sturgis Eagles.  He enjoyed the out-of-doors, hunting, fishing and gardening.  He was also a big Detroit Lions and Tigers fan.  He is survived by a son, Eugene L. (Cheryl) Harvey Jr. of Colon; daughter, Linda (John) Phillips of Fayetteville, NC; step-daughter, Marlene “Martie” (Dave) Clark of Sturgis; step-son, Stephen (Rita) Miller of Sturgis; grandchildren,  Eugene L. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother (Richard). Grant, retiring in 1970.  She was a member of the First Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, deaconess, a member of CWF and held various offices; a member of the Blissfield Shuffle Board Club and the Bradenton Shuffle Board Club; member and former president of the Walworth Woman’s Club; former president of the Better Homes Extension; treasurer and health chairman of Council of Extension; treasurer of the Church Women United; a member of the Order of Eastern Star; AARP; Regional Christian Church representative; and was a UNICEF promoter. She and her husband, Waymon, had spent their winters in Bradenton, Fla., since 1984. Goldys is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Brion of Washburn, Ill., and Judy Fynewever and her husband, Gary of Houghton, Mich.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lavern; three sisters, Velma Vandlen, Mary Spaur and Ruth Bailey; and a daughter, Barbara Walker. Jane Carol Roberts, 74, of Jonesville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009.  Jane fought a courageous battle with cancer and died at peace with family members by her side.  She was born June 11, 1935, in Chicago to Harold and Gladys (LeBaron) Crider.  She was married Nov. 26, 1960, to Keith E. Roberts and he survives. Jane was a graduate of the Elgin Academy in Illinois and Hillsdale College, later attending Western Michigan University for her graduate studies. Jane worked three years for the Fidelity Title Company and taught home economics at Quincy Community Schools for 10 years.  Jane served as the past president and an honorary member of Hide and Seek Child Study, board member of the Karen Jenkins Nursery School for three years, secretary of the Jonesville Board of Appeals for three years, and vice president of the Quincy MEA.  She was actively involved in the Hillsdale United Methodist Church where she served as the past president of Margaret Sessions Clark Circle, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and served on numerous other boards and committees.  Jane volunteered for the United Way and worked on cancer drives in Hillsdale and Jonesville for many years.  She was the chairman for Keep Michigan Beautiful of Fayette Township for five years, co-chair of the Jonesville Historic Home Tours.  She was former vice president of the board and Grosvenor Museum Restoration chair for four years.  Jane was an active member of the Jonesville High School Parents Advisory, cheerleader advisor, past region four F.H.A. state advisor, Hillsdale County Extension “Show-Me” Group, and a member of the AAUW of Hillsdale.  She was also the decoration chairman for the Sauk Theatre and past board member of the Hillsdale Camp Fire. Surviving besides her husband Keith are two daughters, Renae (Tom) Stritzinger of Grand Rapids and Amy (Chris) Fast of Hillsdale; five grandchildren Nicholas Keith, Abigail Marie, and Madeline Jo Stritzinger, Bennett Alexander and Ridley Michael Fast. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, John and Jim Crider. At Jane’s request, cremation has taken place.  There will be no visitation or services at this time.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville. June Ella Paschke, 82, of Pittsford Township, formerly of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009. at Hillsdale Community Health Center.  She was born June 19, 1927, in Detroit to George Bernard and Ella Ida (Wehrmeister) Waldecker.  She was married Nov. 9, 1946, to Clayton A. Paschke and he preceded her in death April 5, 1988. June was retired from the National Bank of Detroit and also worked for the Carriage House in Hillsdale. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Ladies Guild, Stars Group, TGIF group and made service calls to members every week for many years.  June was a past president of  V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 2269 in Detroit.  She originated the trips to Wal-Mart with Key Opportunities, called bingo, delivered meals, was vice president of the council for Hillsdale Place, and enjoyed sending cards to everyone for all occasions. June was the loving mother of two daughters, Carol (Mack) Harvey of Hudson, Dian (Robert) Funk of Hillsdale; and a son Chris (Brenda) Paschke of Jerome; she is also survived by two sisters, Lois (Gary) Winters of Shelbyville and Jane Armstrong of Westland; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Besides her husband Clayton, she was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother Gerald George and a great grandson Christopher Michael. Funeral services for June E. Paschke will be Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m., at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsdale with the Rev. Dan Johnson officiating.  Interment will be take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Glen Eden Memorial Park in Livonia.  The family will receive friends for visitation Monday from 6-8 p.m. at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale, and Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at the church. After serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, she returned to her home in Hamilton, Ontario to marry Harry Fletcher on December 7, 1946, and moved to Detroit. She lived in Macomb County since 1955 and was a paraprofessional at Fraser High School for 24 years, retiring in 1986. Her husband, Harry, predeceased her in 1985. She is survived by three sons, Dave (Dawn), Chris (Bev) and Mike (Ardi); seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren, with two more great-grandchildren expected in the new year. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Leo A. Huff, age 90 years, of Hudson, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at his son’s home in Brooklyn under the loving care of his family and Great Lakes Hospice.  Leo was born May 1, 1919 in Medina, Mich., the son of Sylvester and Eva (Mackey) Huff.  He married Evelyn Waidelich Nov. 2, 1940, in Grand Rapids.  Leo served in the military from 1944-1946.  Leo and Evelyn moved to the Hillsdale County area in 1946 after he returned home from the war.  Leo was a former member of the Locust Corners Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and song leader and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hudson until he moved to his son’s home in Brooklyn in May of this year. While there he attended the Cement City Baptist Church until he went home to be with his Lord.  He enjoyed his family, fishing and mowing grass.  Leo was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn of 68 years, a daughter Donna Mae Cutchall, his parents and two brothers.  Surviving Leo are two daughters, Judy (John) Garris of Quebec City, Quebec and Diane Cudney of Hudson; one son Wayne (Elaine) Huff of Brooklyn; 12 grandchildren; 2l great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren and by his  adopted family,  Barb, Christopher and Ashley Poling.  Leo was retired from Michigan Bell Telephone Co., in 1978 and then worked in his son’s business until he retired.  He was a member of the Gideons and the Michigan Bell Pioneers.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25 in the First Baptist Church in Hudson with Pastor Tom Ball and Pastor Drew Woods officiating.  Interment will be made in the Locust Corners Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson and from 10 a.m. Wednesday until time of service at the church.  The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Gideons International, First Baptist Church of Hudson and Gospel Barn of Hillsdale.  Envelopes available at the funeral home.  Read this obituary and send condolences to the family at www.brownvanhemert.com.

Lloyd B. Hicks, 91 of North Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Coldwater, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009. Lloyd was born Sept. 13, 1918 in Battle Creek to Leon and Margaret (Ackerson) Hicks. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the beginning of WWII and trained to become a B-25 bomber pilot. After being shot down in North Africa, he became a POW and was sent to Stalag Luft III. Lloyd helped rig the tunnel carts by braiding string into rope to move dirt and diggers through the escape tunnels. He also acted as a “penguin” to move dirt from the tunnels into the vegetable gardens. This piece of history later became the movie “The Great Escape.” Upon returning home, he married Mary (Lloyd) Hicks and had a son Jonathan, born in 1946. They moved to Coldwater in 1952 and purchased Woods Safety Service, a brake and alignment shop, which he then successfully operated for the next 38 years. Mary passed away in 1978. He then married Florence Coffin in 1994. Lloyd was a member of the Coldwater Masonic Lodge, the American Legion Post #52 and the Coldwater Elks Lodge #1023. He loved to travel and working in his yard and shop. Survivors include his wife Florence of North Fort Myers, Fla., son Jonathan (Ann) Hicks of Coldwater, grandchildren Christopher Hicks of Lynchburg, Va., Lacy (John) Cowell of Lincoln Park, Sandra (Robert) Ratliff of Union City and sister Nancy (Bill) Allen of Laguna Woods, Calif., six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, stepson Alan (Becky) Coffin of Cape Coral, Fla. and step grandson Craig Coffin of Tampa, Fla. In addition, there are several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister June, brother Stanley and adopted daughter Kathleen Shoup. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 4, 2009 at the United Methodist Church of Coldwater. Cremation has already taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Shriners Children’s Hospitals.

Lois was born March 2, 1923, in Armada Township, the daughter of Archibald and Mary Edna (Draper) Tibbits. She married Leo Chinoski on August 19, 1946, at St. Clement Catholic Church of Romeo. Along with her husband and family, they were longtime dairy farmers at the Armada Township farm. Lois also worked for over 20 years as a meat clerk at the A & P and Kroger. She also worked as a bus driver for St Augustine's School in Richmond and also did seasonal help for the VanHoutte Farms. Lois and her husband, Leo, were founding members of St. Clement Catholic Church and Lois also belonged to the Altar Society for many years. Lois is survived by her two daughters, Mary of Shelby Township and Josephine (Carl) Grider of West Bloomfield; grandchildren include Bryan Grider of San Jose, Calif. and Laura Grider of Virginia Beach, Va. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, on January 29, 2007 and her brother, Robert Tibbits. Funeral Services will take place on Thursday, 11 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church of Romeo followed by burial at the family plot in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Armada Township. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, 6-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home, Romeo, Mich.

Maj. John T. Harling Major John T. Harling, age 75, resident of Clinton Township, and formerly Haleyville, Ala., passed away on Monday, November 30, 2009, at his residence. He was born February 28, 1934, in Baldwin, Mississippi to the late Wiley Arthur and Sophia Harling. He was a 20-year U.S. Army veteran, retired in 1980. During his military career his primary duty was that of hospital administrator. Served during the Vietnam War, and awarded the Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medals. Received a bachelor's degree at Florence State University in Alabama. Loved gospel music, was a smooth dancer and had a beautiful baritone singing voice. Beloved husband of Amelia "Millie" Harling. Loving Father of Shelaine, LeAnn (Richard Massey), Bill (Pam), Pamela (Sean) Doyle and the late Sonya. Step-Father of Philip (Mary) Cornell, Lori (George) Gill, Richard (Sharon) Cornell, and Bryan (Penny) Cornell. Proud grandfather of 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Predeceased by his 11 siblings. Visitation at the Wm. Merle retired as a plant supervisor for M&S Manufacturing in Hudson in 2001, with over 40 years of service. His hobbies included woodworking, tinkering in the workshop with his son Dean’s excavating equipment and was a avid race fan, helping Fisher’s Racing Team at Oakshade Raceway. Merle dearly loved his family, and his grandchildren were the love of his life. Surviving Merle besides his wife, Vergie, of 48 years are four children, Mark Cox of Adrian, Lynda (Michael) Hepker of Mackinac Island, Dean (Sandy) Cox of Hudson and Shane Cox of Hudson; one sister, Velda Reynolds of Lorain, Ohio; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Barbara Brown. At Merle’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or services. He married Janice Swiegart on Sept. 3, 1960, in Hudson and she survives. Mert was a self-employed truck driver for M. Wilson Trucking, retiring in 2006, with over 40 years of service.  He graduated from Hudson High School’s Class of 1957, was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Thursday Afternoon Men’s Golf League, Tuesday Morning Senior’s Golf League and was proud to be a teammate on the 1956 State Championship Football Team in Hudson. Mert enjoyed golf, Hudson football, traveling and dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren. Surviving Mert besides his wife, Jan, of 49 years are two daughters, Teresa (Scott) Frantz of Hudson and Cathy Johnston of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Charles Wilson of Hudson and Steve (Amy) Wilson of Delta, Ohio; three brothers, Roscoe G. “Jerry” (Pat) Wilson of Manitou Beach, Ray (Donna) Wilson of Hudson and Richard (Peggy) Wilson of Adrian, Mich.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; an honorary sister, Carrie Jones of Pittsford, Mich.; and special friend Phelix Wright of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Larry Wilson. Mass of Christian burial for Mert will be Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. H. Mildred I. (Hess) Dexter, 97 of Olympia, Wash., formerly of the Burlington-Tekonsha area, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009. Mrs. Dexter was born June 23, 1912 in Tekonsha Township to George and Rose (Scherer) Hess. Mildred graduated from Tekonsha High School in 1930. She lived in this area for 90 years before moving to Washington to live with her daughter Gwynne. On June 14, 1944, she married Russell G. Dexter in Auburn, Ind. They owned and operated Dexter's Grocery in Tekonsha, which is now known as Newt's. Mildred was an avid gardener, both flower and vegetable, loved animals, especially cats, and was known for her homemade cakes, pies, bread and rolls. Surviving are her son, Dennis of Burlington; daughters Clela Howard of Coldwater and Gwynne Crabbe of Olympia, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and sister. A memorial service to celebrate the gift of her life will be held at the Burlington Church of God, Dec. 4, 2009 at 2 p.m. Pastor Phil Palmer will officiate. Cremation has already taken place. Rudy and Marie were married on June 17, 1950, at St. Mary’s Church in Monroe, Mich. Rudy is a 34-year veteran of the corrugated box industry with Consolidated Packaging in Monroe, Mich., and Tecumseh Corrugated Box Company in Van Wert, Ohio, and Tecumseh, Mich., retiring in 1990. He was an enthusiastic sportsman, greatly enjoying and excelling at semi-pro basketball, golf (four holes in one), and bowling.
