Norma G. Reed, age 60, of Kalamazoo, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 4, 2009. Norma was born on Sept. 19, 1949, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Wayne and Irma L. (Beatty) Warfield. On Dec. 31, 1966, she was united in marriage to Mr. Robert(Bob)E. Reed, of Berrien Springs, Mich. Norma and Bob have been owners of The Hi-Lo Family Convenience Store since 1999 and have become great friends with many of their customers. For 25 years, Norma has been a foster parent for Family & Children Services of Kalamazoo, where she put her heart and soul into touching the lives of 41 children. Norma always wore a smile on her face and left a smile on the faces of those who had the chance to meet her. She had and loved a great sense of humor. Some of her hobbies included, cake decorating, coloring, playing corn-hole with her children, family cookouts in the backyard, attending her children's school events, and decorating the Christmas tree with her family. She enjoyed attending services at both Kalamazoo Valley Family Church and Cherry Creek of Portage with her family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Irma L.Warfield; and brother, Wayne Warfield. Norma is survived by her husband, Bob E. Reed; and their12 children, Robert (Jolene) Reed of Comstock Mich., Brian (Sharon) Reed of Sturgis Mich., Jason Reed of Gobles, Mich., Connie (Joseph) Edgley, Velma (Bucky) Block, Sasha Reed, Ashley Reed, Danielle Reed, Holly Reed, Danny Reed, Michael Reed, all of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Melissa (Jeff) Ward of Ohio.  Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Bobby, Britney, Ashley, Stephanie, Heather, Angela, Mariah, Carmen, Kiana, Adam, Brandon and “Mamaws” special grandson, Daulton; her three great-grandchildren, Austin, Alexa, Aubrianna; her father Wayne (Dorothy) Warfield of Vicksburg, Mich.; a brother, Al Warfield of Delton, Mich.; a sister, Donna (Robert) Moore of Texas Corners, Mich., and several nieces, nephews and in-laws. R. Dean Sheldon was welcomed into his heavenly home, passing through St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on Dec,  5, 2009. He was born on March 19, 1935, to Paul and Dorothy Sheldon in Tecumseh. He graduated from Dundee High School and attended Eastern Michigan and Michigan State University. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jeanne; daughters, Cheryl (Jim) Reeve and Julie (David) Parks; son, Jeff (Heather) Sheldon; and grandchildren, Ashley, Jim, and Chris Reeve, Meghan and Andrew Parks, Isaiah, Lydia, Grace, Faith, and Elijah Sheldon. He is also survived by two brothers, Don (Sandy) Sheldon and Barry (Mary) Sheldon. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Lance. Dean was a man of a strong faith that enabled him to remain a very positive person throughout all of his health issues over the past years. Dean will be greatly missed by all people whose lives he touched. We celebrate his great giving spirit, his sense of humor and gift of wood carving and photography and share his allegiance to MSU as a Spartan. Dean was a long-time member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. He was an active member in the church choir and well-loved by young and old. He was a sales representative in manufacturing for many years until retiring in 1998. He served as Tecumseh School Board President and was a member of Tecumseh Kiwanis and Jaycees. Visitation will be held at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Tecumseh at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Webb officiating. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery. He will lie in state at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time. Ronald Cloyce Bateson, 72, of Blissfield passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at the Bixby Medical Center in Adrian, Mich. He was born on Sept. 26, 1937, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Cloyce V. and Ruby V. (Knierim) Bateson. On Dec. 31, 1960, Ron was married to the former Helen A. Zenk. She survives. Ron served in the National Guard from 1960 to 1963. He worked for the Tecumseh Products Company for a while until becoming self-employed as a horse trainer and farmer.  He raced horses for nearly 45 years, winning the Leading Driver in 1975 at Raceway Park. He was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation of Ohio and Michigan and also served as president for a couple years. He was a member of the Harness Horseman Association, the U.S. Trotting Association, the Adrian Moose Lodge and the Adrian VFW. Ron enjoyed hunting, playing cards, old Western shows, going to the VFW and Moose Lodge and especially hanging out with all of his grandkids and fellow horsemen. Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Helen A. Bateson; his five children, Chris (Cubby) Bateson, Scott (Norma), Bateson, Beverly (Bob) Baidel, Greg (Robyn) Bateson and Todd (Kari) Bateson; his sister, Marilyn (Denny) Bangerter; two brothers, William (Vicky) Bateson and Douglas (Susan) Bateson; five grandchildren, Joshua, Jessica, Justin, Jordan and Jarrett; and a great-grandson, Charlie. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Ron will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield with the Rev. Aden Porter officiating. Burial will follow in Riga Cemetery in Riga Township. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.

She enjoyed sending greeting cards and watching sports and soap operas on television. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ann (George) Neumann of Algonac and many nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband, William who passed away July 23, 1993. They were married July 4, 1963, in Detroit. She was also predeceased by her parents, Frank and Rose Darga and siblings Leon Darga, Arthur Darga and Margaret Wendorf. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 9, 2009, at St. Catherine Church, 1103 Washington, Algonac. Burial Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit. Sprow, her daughter, Carol Sprow and her grandson, Stephen Shulters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. Sister Mary Lequier, formerly known as Sister Anne Immaculate Lequier, died on Dec. 5, 2009, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 73 years of age and in the 53rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Mary was born in Detroit, Mich., to Joseph and Mary (Boka) Lequier. Sister graduated from St. Mary High School in Royal Oak, Mich., and received a Bachelor of Home Economics Degree from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Michigan. Sister spent 19 years ministering in education in Medina, Ohio, and Utica, Owosso, Jackson and Lansing, Mich. She was Principal of St. Paul School in Owosso for 10 years and at Queen of the Miraculous Medal School in Jackson for two years. Sister was Credit Union Manager at Christo Rey Community Center in Lansing, Mich., from 1972 to 1973. She was a Pastoral Minister for 31 years in Charleston, Ridgeville and Edisto Island, S.C. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2009. Sister Mary is survived by four brothers: David Lequier of Royal Oak, Mich., George Lequier of Chiefland, Fla., Thomas Lequier of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Robert Lequier of Houghton Lake, Mich. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. in the Rose Room at the Dominican Life Center, on Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI, 49221. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian.

Verta Viola Smith Verta Viola Smith, age 89, of Memphis, died Sunday December 6, 2009, at her home. She is the daughter of the late Roy and Mabel Burt Hoppe, born January 6, 1920, in Richmond. Verta was the 1939 Class Valedictorian of Richmond High School. Her marriage of Harold Smith was July 1, 1939, in Richmond. Harold died Tuesday June 4, 2002. Verta was a lifetime area resident. She moved to Memphis in 1967 where she farmed and worked as a courier for Kodak. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Memphis, where she was very involved in events and their senior groups. Even after her husbands passing, her strong faith kept her close to God, her church and family. Verta was able to live life to the fullest until her call to be reunited with her husband and her Lord. Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Ronald Grace of Armada and sons and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sandi Smith of Canton, Dennis and Jack Smith of Richmond; grandchildren Amy (Phil) Zarate, Elizabeth (James) Meli, Stefanie Smith, Sarah Smith, Scott, Kevin (Christy) and Michael Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Christina, Aaron, Joey, Ella, Emma, Findley, and Raikken; a brother, Carl Hoppe of Richmond as well as nieces, nephews, and many friends. She is preceded in death by a sister, Vonda Koehn. Her family honors the memory of Verta and invite you to visit and share memories Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday 2 to 8 p.m. at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond. Violet C. Miller, age 96, of Albion, passed away Nov. 28, 2009 at Tendercare of Albion.  She was born Feb. 18, 1913, in Hillsdale County to Delbert and Chrissie (Perkins) Britton. She had worked in the Cambria area in 1968. When she moved to Albion, she worked as a laundress at Home Laundry. For 28 years Violet was married to Frank Parney who preceded her in death in 1960. In 1972, she married Robert “Bert” Miller who survives. She was a member of Leisure Hour Club in Albion. Violet enjoyed hunting, cooking and  baking, sewing and gardening. Survivors include: husband, Robert “Bert” Miller; daughter, Donelta Day and son, Junior and Martha Parney, all of Albion; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Parney; one brother, Ernest Britton; one half-brother, Garford Britton and half-sister, Audrey Seward. Violet Irene Fetty Wagner, 79, of Pioneer, Ohio, formerly of Hillsdale, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born Sept. 23, 1930, in Medina Township to Adam and Inez (Brandeberry) Lewis. She was married June 25, 1951, to Claud Fetty and he preceded her in death Oct. 7, 1978.  She was married in May of 1983 to Emmett Wagner and he preceded her in death in January of 1998. Violet was a housekeeper at the Dow Center for 15 years and a member of the Jefferson Jills Extension Club for over 40 years. She was an avid Senior Bus Tripper, having traveled on more than 100 bus trips. She worked on the family farm for many years and enjoyed needle work and gardening. Violet is survived by two daughters, Joyce Lewis of Pioneer, Ohio, and Darlene (Dennis) Sargent of Battle Creek; a stepdaughter, Betty Jean (Bud) Hayden of Middleburg, Fla.; three sisters, Doris (Earl) Brink and Carol Hashley, both of Adrian, and Margaret (Keith) Lentz of Middleburg, Fla.; three grandchildren, Greg (Carey) Ferguson of Colorado, Chris (Kim) Sargent of Battle Creek and Marc (Elizabeth) Ferguson of Coldwater; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husbands, Claud Fetty and Emmett Wagner, she was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Dorothy, Edna, Julia and  Eleanor; and a brother, Earl. Funeral services for Violet I. Wagner will be on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at 11 a.m. at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Township. The family will receive friends for visitation Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
