JoAnn E. Hanel Lake City JoAnn E. Hanel of Lake City went to be with her Lord and Savior April 22, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. She was 70 years old. She was born May 22, 1939 in Lansing to Charles and Julia (O'Conner) Kring. She married Joe John Hanel April 23, 1957. He preceded her in death April 6, 2002. She was employed by the State of Michigan for over 30 years. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, painting ceramics and reading. She also spent much time with her family, grandchildren and friends. In her younger years she was a tap dancer on the Grand River Show Boat and the Chesaning Show Boat. She was always up for change and trying new things. She loved wearing hats and collected tea pots. She is survived by her children; Judy Ann (Michael) Shamp of Springhill, Tennessee, Jacqueline (John "Tony") Castillo of East Lansing, Jeannie (Dale) Kramer of Lake City and JoAnn Molitor of Lake City. She is also survived by two sisters: Kathryn S. Lewis of Lansing and Mary Ann Westhoff-Skidmore of Gobles; ten grandchildren: Dustin, Jennifer, Charlie, Sarah, Sean, Jesse, Zachary, Julia, Travis and Elizabeth; and seven great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Lake City with Rev. Hoyumpa, Santiago officiating. Visitation will be Monday, April 26 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Young Funeral Home. with a Rosary service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Pioneer Township Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Sean, Jesse, Zachary and Travis and Lance. Memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy Hospice. Lawrence Wayne Von Tersch, Ph.D. Okemos Dr. Lawrence Wayne Von Tersch, 87 of Okemos passed away April 19, 2010. Born March 17, 1923 in Waverly, Iowa, to Alfred and Martha. He obtained Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. degrees from Iowa State University. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He started his career as a Professor at Iowa State University. He later joined the faculty of Michigan State University in 1956 as a professor of Electrical engineering, founded the MSU Computer Lab, and retired as Dean of the College of Engineering in 1988. Dr. Von Tersch was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, LaValle and his brother Alfred. He is survived by his son Richard (Alanna) Von Tersch of Williamston; brother George (Carol) of Surprise, AZ; sister Elizabeth of Largo, FL; sister-in-law Jean Rubendall of Mesa, AZ; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Lee E. Willis, age 82, of Tecumseh, passed away April 22, 2010. Lee was born Aug. 31, 1927, in Caylor, Va., the son of John and Sarah (Grabel) Willis. He married Billie Ayers and she preceded him in death December 2001. On Oct. 24, 2003, he married Vernese Garrett and she survives. He retired from R. S. Moore & Son Lumber Company after 30 years of service and then worked for ACO Hardware for 15 years. Lee was a member of the Tecumseh Missionary Baptist Church.   Besides his wife, Vernese, Lee is survived by a son, David (Christene) Willis, and one  grandson, Trevor, of Tecumseh; two brothers, Carl (Winneford) of Kokomo, Ind., and Paul (Jane) of Fruitland, Fla.; one sister, Helen Ruth Stone of Kokomo, Ind.; four stepdaughters, two stepsons and numerous stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John Brent and Sewell; and one sister, Ester Overton. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2010, at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh, with Pastor Brian Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Tecumseh. She then received her master’s degree in guidance and counseling in 1958. Lily served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a PFC during World War II at Hamilton Field, Calif. William H. ‘Bill’ Fields Jan. 2, 1928 — April 21, 2010 William H. “Bill” Fields, 83, of Reading, passed away Wednesday at home.  He was born January 2, 1928, in Ward, Ark. to William and Elva (Minton) Fields.  Bill served in the Merchant Marines and was a truck driver for Roadway Trucking Company of Detroit.  He belonged to the American Legion and Masonic Lodge in Detroit.  His hobbies included reading Louis L’Amour books, working on the farm, watching Detroit Tigers baseball on TV and flying his Piper Cub airplane. Survivors include his wife, Audrey (Waters) Fields, whom he married Feb. 9, 1985; four daughters, Charlotte (Curtis) Ferguson, Desark, Ark.; Dena (Time) Wilson, Tennessee; Dawn Dale, Elyria, Ohio; Sally (Gary) Kinney, Hillsdale; two sons, Sheridan (Theresa) Draggoo, Camden, and Dan (Rita) Draggoo, Montpelier, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and P.J, a much loved dog. His parents and one sister preceded him in death. Burlew, 70, of Reading, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo.  She was born Feb. 19, 1940, in North Adams, the daughter of Gerald and Ruth (Snyder) Allen.  Dorothy cleaned many homes in the area and enjoyed watching TV and spending time with her grandchildren.  On March 9, 1972, she married Richard “Stub” Burlew and he preceded her in death in 1996.  Survivors include one daughter, Peggy (Donald) Wooden, of Florida; one sister, Doris (Buddy) Hagaman, of Reading, and two grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers (Virgil, Howard, and Larry Allen), and one daughter (Karen). Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with the Rev. Alan Fenstermaker officiating.  Interment will follow in Berg Cemetery, Montgomery. Visitation is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the National Kidney Foundation or the family.

Garrigan, age 94 of Hillsdale, formerly of Oak Harbor and Toledo, Ohio, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Drews Place of Hillsdale.  He was born April 27, 1915, in Put-in-Bay, Ohio, to Eugene and Minnetta (Engel) Garrigan. Eugene graduated from Libbey High School in Toledo.  He retired from the city of Toledo automotive parts department in 1975. He was a talented artist and an avid fisherman.  Eugene enjoyed gourmet cooking, classical music, and being with family and friends. Those remaining to cherish his memory include two sisters, Mary Pringle of North Hollywood, California and Minnetta Probert of Hillsdale; many nieces and nephews; and by close friends at Toussaint River, Ohio and Sunrise Beach, Texas. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Borough; and five brothers, Louis Fischer, Cleland Fischer, Jerome Garrigan, Edward Garrigan, and John Garrigan. She worked in the accounting office at Wal-Mart, retiring in 2007.   Leah was an avid bowler at L & J Lanes and was known for bowling back to back 600 series on the Tuesday Night Owls League. She bowled with the “Bradford Pinknockers” and “Gale’s Barber Shop” teams. Leah also won the Tri-State Singles Tournament multiple times.   Survivors include two daughters, Kristie (Raymond) VanOrder of Horton and Leora Bowman of Asheville, N.C.; two sons, William McDowell of Mosherville and Linden McDowell of Seattle, Wash.; her mother, Dorothy Mosher of Jonesville; two sisters, Barbara Wolcott of Onaway and Shirley (Harland) Bates of Hillsdale; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.   She was preceded in death by her husband (William P. McDowell), her father (Lloyd Mosher), and one sister, (Marilyn Wright).   Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mosherville Cemetery with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. He is survived by his wife of 34 ½ years, Pam; his mother-in-law, Joyce Shaw of Hillsdale; two children, Shawn (Christine) DeForest of Lincoln Park and Heather (Kevin) Galioto of Stow, Ohio; six grandchildren, Michael, Roger-Jesse, Alexis, Taylor, Emily and Blake; five siblings, Gary (Kim) DeForest of Concord, Donna (Larry) Reiniche of Pulaski, Ken (Penny) DeForest of Jonesville, Pat (Jody) DeForest of Pulaski and Patty (Bill) Felkey of Pulaski and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, John Shaw; one sister, Connie DeForest and one grandson, Christian Galioto. Mr. DeForest was a decorated veteran who served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and he retired from the Army Reserves as a Master Sergeant after 20 years of service. He worked for 24 years at Foulke Construction and retired in January 2008. He served as President of Lifeline Food Pantry in Camden and was a member of the Reading Church of the Nazarene, the 199th Charlie Company Infantry and the Vietnam Veterans Association. Mr. DeForest was an avid sports fan at all levels who enjoyed any sport including a ball or a puck. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and he was a friend to all. He will be missed by all who knew him. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Roger Earl DeForest will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 with Pastor David Tran officiating. Interment with military honors will take place in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsdale. He was born Aug. 2, 1948, in Detroit, to Francis L. Marnell and Shirley J. (Kittle) Marnell. He married Christine Davis in Westminster, Colorado, and she survives. Butch lived in the North Adams and Addison area for several years before moving to Colorado 34 years ago. He graduated from North Adams High School in 1966. He worked for Kelsey Hayes in Jackson, then he worked for the Detroit News and then the Rocky Mountain News for 28 years, where he was a Foreman and Union President. Butch enjoyed playing the piano and guitar. He was an avid Denver Broncos fan where he always watched their games in his garage. He also enjoyed motorcycles and fishing. Surviving, besides his wife Christine, are two daughters, Michelle (Scott) Schultz of Jonesville, Carrie Marcum of Commerce City, Colo.; one son, William F. (Melissa) Marnell Jr. of Osseo; two stepchildren, Kelly Davis of Phoenix, Ariz., Denise Mauney of Oregon; his mother and stepfather, Shirley and Royce Russell of Onsted; two sisters, Bonnie Potts of Addison, Shelly (John) Stanton of Coldwater; one brother, Dennis (Diana) Marnell of Manitou Beach; 12 grandchildren; several nephews, nieces and cousins. She is survived by her four daughters, Geraldine (Gerald) Eaton and Joan (Gary) Roberts, both of Tecumseh; Barbara Bond (Fred Long) of National City, Mich., and Lois Quinn of Crane Hill, Ala.;  17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Max. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 23, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 p.m., with Pastor Andy Albertini of Tecumseh Riverbend Friends Church officiating. She was the beautiful wife of Rusty Schwartz, the dedicated and loving mother of Ezekiel Levi “Zeke” Schwartz and the best owner a dog could have, Skittles. Rita was born on Dec. 7, 1957, to Donald and Helen (Keinath) Aebersold of Britton, Mich.; her father preceded her in death. Rita loved her family, mother Helen of Tecumseh, sisters Elaine (Dick) Tirb of Clinton, Mich., and Peggy (Rex) Fetzer of Casa Grande, Ariz. Favorite in-laws, Dick and Roberta Schwartz, Rick and Kim, John and Joann. Nieces and nephews, Fuzzy and Amanda, Matt and Kate, Jessica and Eric, David, Chris, Jason and great-nephew William. Rita graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1976, worked at Chrysler Proving Grounds in Chelsea for 19 years and was a massage therapist for 10, healing many sore muscles. Rita was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous with 23 years sobriety. She loved the Lord and was a long-term member and servant at Heart O’ the Lakes United Brethren Church in Brooklyn, Mich. Her pride and joy was her son Zeke. Homeschooling, golf tournaments, swimming in the pool, sledding, vacationing in Mexico and bringing him up in the ways of the Lord were just a few of her personal enjoyments. She graduated from Alma Center School (K-12), and attended three years at North Central Bible College, one year at Minneapolis Nursing School and graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree from Eau Claire University and her Master of Arts from Northern Michigan University. Ruby was a school teacher, wife and mother. She married Allen J. Bowerman on August 4, 1962, in Alma Center, WI. Ruby attended Evangel Temple Assemblies of God Church and was a member of the Evangel University Ladies Auxiliary. She was a volunteer camp counselor and did church service and leadership. She enjoyed reading, photography, family and traveling. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Esther; brothers, Melvin, Edward, Arnold, David; and sister, Ruth. She is survived by her husband, Allen Bowerman; children, Kevin and Christie Bowerman, Karen Bowerman; three grandchildren, Daniel, Benjamin, Adeline Bowerman; brothers, Donald, Clifford and Clarence; sisters, Esther, Eunice, Ethel and Bonnie; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Ruth Lenoir Feeback, age 89, of Metamora, Ohio, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Wednesday morning, April 21, 2010. She was born Dec. 9, 1920, in Columbus, Ohio, to Emmet and Marrie (Forshee) LaSalle. She married Raymond Feeback, and he preceded her in death.  Ruth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was a long-time, very active member of the Delta Assembly of God, where she was a Sunday school teacher, and sang and played the organ. Ruth loved her church family. She loved writing poetry, was an avid bowler, and enjoyed bird watching and nature. She is survived by her loving children, Roger (Rose) Feeback, Rick (Kathy) Feeback, Linda (Greg) Hodges and Kathy Tatum (Dick Sullivan); 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Raymond, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Francis “Junior” LaSalle. Friends and family may visit Friday, April 23, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home in Metamora. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at the funeral home, with Pastor Randy Trowbridge officiating. Interment will follow at Amboy Township Cemetery. Sills of Fort Wayne; son and fiancé’ Sheldon Jason Sills and Bree Clark of Coldwater; daughter and son-in-law Erica J. and Joe Boals of Green Bay, Wis.; two brothers Stewart Sills of Markle, Ind. and Stan Sills of Columbus, Ind.; three grandchildren Nathan, Jaida and Carlie Boals of Green Bay, Wis. Stanley (Stanislaw) Dobek, 83, of Tecumseh, Mich., passed away suddenly April 16, 2010. Hewas born in Odry, Poland, on April27, 1926, to Jan and Weronika Dobek, who preceded him in death, along with his brothers, Tadeusz Dobek of Szczecin, Poland, and Franciszek Dobek of Czersk, Poland. Stan is survived by his wife, Patricia (Simpson) Dobek, whom he married on March 23, 1949, and his son, Jeffrey Dobek of Bydgoszcz, Poland. He is also survived by two sisters, Bronislawa Koperska and Irena Jarzebek of Odry, Poland. Stan served in the Polish Army during World War II, and after the war lived in Bedford, England. Stan and Pat immigrated to the USA in 1955, settling in Tecumseh and becoming a U.S. citizen in 1965. He worked at Bruce Foundry, and was later one of the first employees at the GM Fisher Body Tecumseh Plant, retiring from GM in 1988. He spent his retirement years tending his garden and orchard, of which he was very proud, and traveling together with Pat, returning to Poland and to England on visits. Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial will be held at a later date at the Anderson Funeral Home in Tecumseh. She was employed at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for the past 20 years, attending college during this time while she earned her degree in nursing.  She had been a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church for the past 28 years. Sue loved to read, visit and spoil her grandchildren and attend church and plays.  She was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother.  She was selfless and always ready to help a friend in need.  She enjoyed writing and making cards for friends and family.  Sue will be dearly missed. Psalms 37:5: Depend on the Lord, trust him, and he will take care of you. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Mosley, and husband, Gordon, of Acworth, Ga.; a son, Tim Hendricks, and wife, Amanda of Richmond Hill, Ga.; her mother, Geraldine Zarza of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Larry Gowen; grandchildren Cole and Jack Hendricks; nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Sadie. She was preceded in death by her father, Urban Gowen, and stepfather, Ray Zarza. Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Marietta.  Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the church,  with The Rev. Mac Riley officiating. William B. "Pops" Richards Lansing Age 82, passed away April 22, 2010. He was born December 22, 1927 in Lansing the son of Reginald and Mary (Paynter) Richards. William was a member of Central United Methodist Church since 1945 and was active in the choir since 1950. He graduated from Michigan State University and belonged to the MSU Alumni Association, MSU Rebounders Club and the Downtown Coaches Club. William also worked for MSU for over 30 years, retiring in 1993. He played in an over 70-softball league and several bowling leagues. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean Richards; 2 daughters, Kelley J. Richards and Lynne M. Richards; and brother, Anthony W. Richards. He is survived by his wife, Karen Wallace; children, William B. Richards, Jr., Robert David Richards and Christopher Alan Richards; 10 stepchildren, Cathy (Jon) Sayer, Jerry Wallace, Chris Wallace, Kim Wallace, Duane Daugherty, Eldonna Daugherty, Patricia Chovance, Linda Rourke, Sharon Daugherty, Roland Smith; 23 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; and sister, Marian (Fred) Hodgson. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen F. Ezop, M.Div. officiating.
