Edward F. Hicks Lansing Born in Pinckney, Michigan on December 7, 1922 son of the late Ray and Edna (Webb) Hicks passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at the age of 87. Edward is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arnetta Hicks; son, Michael (Theresa) Hicks, daughter, Peggy Pyburn; four grandchildren, Laura Hicks, Jonathan Hicks, Matthew Pyburn and Allison Pyburn; great-grandson, Dillon Pyburn; three brothers, Ray, Ron, and Don Hicks; two sisters, Betty Cohoon and Florence Hicks along with many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Hicks and his sister, Helen Hawks. Edward was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard serving during WWII. He was a professional photographer and was owner and operator of Edwards Photographic Studio in Lansing for many years. He was a member and past-president of the Professional Photographers of Michigan and a member of the Lansing Optimist Club. Edward was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church in Lansing. He was an avid traveler, golfer and spent countless hours working in his yard. Funeral services will be held at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. with the Rev. Charles Grauer officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday one hour prior to the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Christ United Methodist Church or the, in memory of Edward Hicks.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1934, in Hudson, Mich., to the late John William and Marvel (Osmun) Dopp. He married Lila Jones on March 1, 1984, in Wauseon, and she survives. Lyle graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1953, and spent his life farming and working at various factories, most recently the Foundry in Lyons. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid NASCAR and Ohio State Buckeye fan. Surviving Lyle besides his wife, Lila, are two sons, Nathan (Michelle) Dopp of Holgate, Ohio, and Doug Pfund of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Deb (John) Felix and Delene (Don) Toia all of Tucson, Ariz.; four brothers, Paul (Margaret) Dopp of Kosciusko, Miss., William (Vickie) Dopp of Archbold, Ohio, Dale (Sherry) Dopp of Jackson, Mich., and Roger Dopp of Findlay, Ohio; one sister, Judy Vanderveer of Morenci, Mich.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Fenno on April 12, 1947 in Angola, Ind. He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 2005. Mrs. Fenno worked in retail for many years before earning her Registered Nurse certification. She worked at the Community Health Center of Branch County for ten years, retiring in 1990. Jean was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Coldwater where she belonged to the St. Mary’s Guild and the Domino Club. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting and had made many prayer shawls with the church ministry. Jean also enjoyed gardening. Jean is survived by her daughters Phylis Hyland of Sturgis, Penny and Ed Jr. Geishert of Quincy and Pam Fenno of Kalamazoo, her grandchildren Paul (Darlene) Geishert of Snellville, Ga., Torey (Darin) Wolfcale of Coldwater and Michael Geishert of Quincy, her great grandchildren Zachery, Heaven and Xavier Geishert and Bailey Blair, Kurt, Micha and Olivia Geishert and special friend Jim “Fielder” Martin of Coldwater. She was born May 5, 1927, in Hillsdale, to Lester and Grace (Waldron) Draper. She was married March 15, 1947, to Robert Martin and he preceded her in death Dec. 25, 2003. Dorothy was the owner and operator of Stylette Beauty Salon in Hillsdale for 53 years. She was a graduate of Reading High School and Riggs Beauty School. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Dorothy enjoyed bowling and sponsored the Stylettes Bowling Team at Hillside Lanes for over 20 years. She was also a strong supporter of the Humane Society. Surviving are two daughters, Dee Dee Wise and Jodi Martin, both of Hillsdale; two sons, David Martin of Hillsdale and Terry (Laura) Martin of Jonesville; six grandchildren, Erica Martin, Jessica Martin, Merissa Wise, David Martin Jr., Brittany Martin and Kyle Martin; three great-grandchildren, Evan, Carlin and Lain; two sisters, Janice (Don) Binkley of North Adams and Barbara (Herb) Smith of Hillsdale. Merillat in Angola, Ind. on Feb. 1, 1940, and he preceded her in death on March 5, 2003.   Ila was a lifelong Hudson area resident and attended the First Baptist Church in Hudson.   Surviving Ila are one daughter, Nancy (John) Fackler of Hudson; five sons, Larry (Ruth) Merillat of Osseo, Daniel (Diana) Merillat of Prattville, David (Barb) Merillat of Hudson, Robert (Beth) Merillat of Hudson and Edward Merillat of Hudson; one sister, Joan Kruse of Wauseon, Ohio; one brother, Robert Lumbardo of Arizona; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-greatgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five sisters, Alice Warren, Doris Lockwood, Betty Ershem, Jeanine Britton and Ruth Snipe; four brothers, Hal, Max, Guy and Val Lumbardo; a sister, Galesworth and a brother, Keith Lumbardo in infancy.   Funeral services for Ila will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Donald Merillat Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Hudson. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.   Those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to Alzheimer’s Association or Great Lakes Hospice.

She had 12 children; a special niece, 44 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren. Juanita was one of 11 children born to D. Ray and Etta Belle (Kreischer) Vian in Van Wert, Ohio. She retired from Fairway Products in Hillsdale. She resided in the Jackson, Hillsdale and Battle Creek areas, as well as in Tacoma Wash. A celebration honoring her life is scheduled at at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Chas. J. Burden and Son Funeral Home, 1806 E. Michigan, Jackson. Lee James Walker June 30, 1929 — May 25, 2010 Lee James Walker, D.O., FACOOG, (Distinguished) osteopathic physician, educator, loving husband and father, passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2010. Dr. Walker was born June 30, 1929, in Hillsdale, to D.D. and Ayleen Walker, who were both chiropractors. Lee was a graduate of Hillsdale College, receiving a B.S. degree in 1950. He graduated from Des Moines University, Des Moines, Iowa, on June 5, 1953, receiving a D.O. degree. His internship was served at Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital, Grand Rapids. After his internship, he served a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Flint Osteopathic Hospital in Flint. Dr. Walker practiced in Grand Rapids from 1956 to 1961 when he moved his family to Arlington, Texas where he joined the Mid Cities Clinic and Mid Cities Memorial Hospital, Grand Prairie. In 1970, he joined the clinical faculty of University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 1974, Dr. Walker was the first clinical faculty member hired by TCOM, being appointed professor of the obstetrics and gynecology and chairman of the department. He retired from UNTHSC in 1994 and was awarded the title of emeritus professor by the board of regents of UNT. In 1967, he was elected to the board of trustees of the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He was elected president of the ACOOG in 1974, for a one-year term and continued serving on the ACOOG board of trustees until 1987. In 1992, Lee was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from ACOOG. This is the highest award given by the college. Dr. Walker was instrumental in osteopathic, OB/GYN education initiating the first national post-graduate education course in OB/GYN in 1968 and continued being course director for the next five years. He was proud of the students he taught at UNTHSC, TCOM, and was elated that their highest scores on state board exams were in OB/GYN. He was predeceased by his parents, D.D. and Ayleen Walker; and his daughter, Laurie Walker Shelby. Survivors: Wife of 61 years, Marylin; daughter, Karen Leigh Walker of Bacliff, Texas; grandchildren, Bart Hall of Fort Worth, Texas, Lindsey Gross and husband, Darrel of Dallas, Texas; son-in-law, Ronnie Shelby of Monroe, La. Funeral: 1 p.m. Thursday in Arlington Funeral Home Chapel. He was born on Oct. 5, 1934, in Hudson to the late John William and Marvel (Osmun) Dopp. He married Lila Jones on March 1, 1984, in Wauseon, and she survives. Lyle graduated from Chesterfield High School in 1953, and spent his life farming and working at various factories, most recently the Foundry in Lyons. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid NASCAR and Ohio State Buckeye fan. Surviving Lyle besides his wife, Lila, are two sons, Nathan (Michelle) Dopp of Holgate, Ohio, and Doug Pfund of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Deb (John) Felix and Delene (Don) Toia all of Tucson, Ariz.; four brothers, Paul (Margaret) Dopp of Kosciusko, Miss., William (Vickie) Dopp of Archbold, Ohio, Dale (Sherry) Dopp of Jackson, and Roger Dopp of Findlay, Ohio; one sister, Judy Vanderveer of Morenci; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Paul was a member of the Hillsdale County United Brethren Ministerial Association, Missionary Church Ministerial Association and Morenci Area Ministerial Association. He enjoyed bicycling, classic cars, fishing, baseball and woodworking. On June 15, 1984, he married Rita Christley and she survives in Reading. Also surviving: daughters, Grace Webster of Reading, Samantha Webster of Reading, Martha Webster of Reading; son, Hobart Webster of Pittsburgh, Pa.; grandson, Gavin Dombrowski of Reading; mother, Marjie Brennan of Carlisle, Pa.; sisters, Esther (Alan) Barejekia of Baltimore, Md., LaVonne (Geoffrey) Mackey of Florida; brother, Tim (Susan)Webster of Charlotte, N.C. Sister Madelene Rowden, formerly known as Mary Teresa Rowden, died on May 25, 2010, at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle, Wash. She was 85 years of age and in the 62nd year of her religious profession: 56 years in the Dominican Sisters of Edmonds and six years in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Madelene was born in Oakland, Calif., to Stanislaus and Anna (Ely) Rowden. Sister graduated from Notre Dame High School in Alameda, Calif., and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology/Sociology from Fort Wright College in Spokane, Wash. Sister spent 19 years ministering in education in Pittsburg, Calif.; Aberdeen and Seattle, Wash. She worked at St. Anthony Orphanage in Toledo, Ohio, for three years, and for six years ministered as part of the domestic staff at the retreat house in Menlo Park, Calif., and the Archbishop’s residence in San Francisco. Sister was a Chaplain for two years at St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno, and five years at St. Joseph Hospital in Stockton, both in California; one year at St. Joseph Hospital in Longview, and six years at Harborview Hospital in Seattle, both in Washington. Sister became a resident of St. Joseph Residence in Seattle, in 2006.  Sister Madelene is survived by loving nieces and nephews. A Vigil Service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at Assumption Convent in Seattle. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Seattle, Wash. She attended the Leonidas Baptist Church. Susan is survived by her husband, Herbert; a daughter, Debra (Dale) Baker of Mendon; a son, Herbert (Carol) Steffey Jr. of Millersburg, Ohio; four grandchildren, Alicia Baker, Kari Baker, Brian Baker and Jeff Welch; three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Michael and Emily (along with soon expected, Autumn); two sisters, Sally Cipher of Oregon and Polly Hight of Walled Lake; two brothers, Tom Misener of Oregon and Mike Misener of California; a step-brother, Jon Rives of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her stepfather, Earl Rives. Preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Leona (Hoard) McNatt, her oldest sister Ludema, her brother Harley, younger sister Carol, and her husband of 56 years Ward (DuWayne) Ryckman. Survived by her children, Valorie Underwood (Leo), DuWayna Downey, and Brian (Coni) Ryckman of Lansing. Honorary "daughters" Terri Whaley, and Loretta Berger. 7 grandchildren, 11½great-grandchildren; cousin Myrna Restainer ; sister in law, Donna McNatt, brother in law, Donald Ryckman (Carol), Honorary "sister" Dona Goff, "Aunt" Mary; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the La femmes /Forty ET Eight Chateau, and a member of the Olivet Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held at Chapel in the Pines Funeral Home on Wednesday June 2, 2010 at 11:00a.m.
