Alexander Perreman Alexander Perreman, age 94, of Marine City, died on Sunday, June 6, 2010. He was born May 31, 1916 in Proctor, Minnesota to the late Casimier and Philomena Perreman. He is survived by his children, Ronald (Vickie) Perreman of Marine City, Diane (Donald) Spishock of Macomb, Karen (Bruce) Spencer of Trotwood, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Dan and Jerry Ehrke, Ronald, Scott, and Dean Perreman, Troy and Drew Cunningham, Karlyn Semlow, Jenelle and Bruce Spencer; 14 great-grandchildren, Christopher, Alyse and Andrew Ehrke, Michael, Joseph, Katherine and Samantha Perreman, Joshua and Austin Cunningham, Keagan and Emma Semlow, Sandy and Rob Williams and Chloe Cunningham; a great-great-grandson, Eli Ehrke; and brother-in-law Odiel VanHeuver. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Irene; siblings, Helen and Albert Perreman and Martha Wicke. Visitation will be held in the Harold W. Arthur Hase Arthur Hase, age 87, a resident of St. Clair Shores, died Saturday June 5, 2010 at his home. He was born December 22, 1922 in Detroit, Mich. Arthur was a veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and served in WWII. He was a long time employee of Chrysler Amplex Division and retired in 1983. He loved being with his children and grandchildren and helping them whenever he could. He also loved spending time at his cottage in Port Austin, Mich. and volunteering his services at church. Loving husband of Mabel for 64 years. Loving father of Cheryl (Bill) Hatfield, Darlene (Dennis) Upton, Butch Arthur Hase. Grandfather to Shelley, Tom, Nick, Ashley, Derek, Damon, Darren, Lindsay and Mindy; great-grandfather of 11 boys and girls. Survived by sisters, Lillian Meier and Elsie Rohrer. Predeceased by sister, Olga Gellert; grandchildren, Jason Hase and Danielle Upton; great-grand children, Ian and Tara Upton. Clarence M. Hansen

Clarence M. Hansen East Lansing Professor Clarence M. Hansen, age 96, died May 23, 2010. Clarence was born July 2, 1913 on the family farm in Victory Township, Mason County, Michigan. He graduated from Ludington High School, studied mechanical engineering at Wayne State University, earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan College, his Master of Arts degree (in Industrial Education) from Columbia University, and also did advanced work at Michigan State University. He taught high school Shop classes in South Haven, Michigan where he also enjoyed hobbies making jewelry, pottery, metal art and furniture. In 1945 he was recruited to a research assistant position in the Agricultural Engineering Department, Michigan State College (now MSU). He was promoted to full Professor in 1970. Clarence's work at MSU included teaching, extension, and a focus on research in Power & Machinery. His work led him to travel widely, having visited 67 countries in his lifetime starting with Columbia, South America in 1952 for a year with his family as part of the Point Four Program. He made many trips to Europe, and visited five continents with sabbatical leaves in China, Japan, Taiwan, Egypt, and Chile. He acted as the "Chief of Party", with Co-Leader and wife, Thelma, on a People to People trip to the Soviet Union in 1988. During his professional and retirement years Clarence authored 141 papers and was granted 14 patents, including one each with his sons, Charles and Dennis. He was a Fellow in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) where he held many committee chairmanships. Honors included Michigan Section ASAE Engineer of the Year and a meritorious award from the Polish Ministry of Agriculture for mentoring Polish students. From 1966 to 1979 he mentored 24 students from many foreign countries. He acted as chairman of the organizing committee when the International Commission of Agricultural Engineering (CIGR) held its meeting at MSU in 1979. He was given a prestigious award by CIGR for his achievements in agricultural engineering and also received a meritorious award from the French Government. Clarence retired from MSU in 1980, and in addition to his many professional accomplishments he was a member of the Executive Board for both the State YMCA and Camp-Hayo-Went Ha, and served as President of the State YMCA of Michigan. In 2003, he was elected to the Camp Hayo-Went-Ha "Hall of Fame" for his many years of service which began in 1933. Clarence was a member of the Haslett Parkwood Y's Service Club, Lansing Farmers Club (one time president), and a member of the Council of Elders of Peoples Church. He was president of the MSU Retirees Association 1993-95 and also belonged to the MSU Beaumont Society. Clarence is survived by his wife of 49 years and 10 months, Thelma; son Charles (Mary) and their daughters, Jodi (Doug) Kozma and Karen (Patrick) Weese; son Dennis (Barbara) and their daughters, Stephanie (Nicholas) Friant and Lisa (Matt) Alcorn; son Marvin (Peggy) Dunn and their daughter Sarah (Craig) Penquite and son Kenneth (Jennifer); and daughter Ann (Shelby) Robertson and their daughters, Linda (Don) Filcek, Laurel (Andy) McCoy and Beth (Matt) McAlvey; along with 16 great-grandchildren. Clarence was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth, (Sedestrom); and his brothers Dean, Fred (Dorothy), and Paul (Edna). A Memorial Service will be held June 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Peoples Church, 200 West Grand River Ave., East Lansing, Michigan, with the Rev. Dr. Harry H. Johnson officiating. A private interment at Acacia Park Cemetery, Beverly Hills, Michigan will be held on June 11, 2010. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the many staff at Burcham Hills Retirement Community and Hartland Hospice for the outstanding care and understanding they provided Clarence in his last months. David Harold Hall, age 77, passed away, June 4, 2010, at home. He was born Jan. 19, 1933, in Altapass, N.C., the son of Preston Hall and Eliza Tripett. He served valiantly in the Korean Conflict twice, receiving two Silver Stars and two Purple Hearts. He married Julia Ann Griffith of Adrian on March 12, 1956. He worked at Stubnitz for 35 years and later retired from Hardwoods of Michigan in Clinton. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Julia Ann Hall, on Dec. 9, 2005. He is survived by his children, Ricky Hall, Robbie (Andrea) Hall, Rhonda (Larry) Smiddy and David Robert Hall; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Hall; sister, Deborah Hall; and several brothers and sisters of Spruce Pine, N.C., and Florida. He was a lifetime member of the Adrian VFW, DAV and Adrian American Legion Post 275. Visitation will be on Monday, June 7, 2010, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian. Frederick L. Mills Higgins Lake Born July 20, 1924, to Fred and Mabel Mills, Fred passed away June 6, 2010 at the age of 85. Fred served in the Marines during WWII, with an honorable discharge and Purple Heart. He made his living at the Board of Water and Light for 38½years retiring as Superintendent of the Fleet Services. He was also the President of the Lansing Community Credit Union for 25 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #153 in St. Johns and a member of the Elks and Eagles for years. Fred volunteered at Ingham Medical Hospital setting up Lifelines. During Fred's last 23 years he spent his summers at Higgins Lake and his winters in Lakeland, Florida. Preceding Fred in death was his wife of 56 years, Helen Lucille Mills. Surviving are his children, Cathie (Carl) Niemann, Ronald (Debra) Mills and Pamela (Maury) Mills-Pitsch; grandchildren, Casey Filipak, Carrie Niemann, Christopher Mills, Matthew Sims and Aaron Robbins; also his loving companion, Elizabeth Buell. The graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2010 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Lansing. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Gary Lee Lawson, 63, of Shipshewana, Ind., died June 2, 2010 at his home following an extended illness. He was born April 10 1947, in Garrett, Ky., the son of Milford Lee and Mildred (Howard)Larson. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had lived in Shipshewana, Ind. for eight years, coming from White Pigeon. On July 7, 1976, he married Olga Helen Cruz in Charleston, W.Va. He worked in recreational vehicle manufacturng, retiring from Coachman Industries of Middlebury, Ind., after 24 years. He was a musician, drumer and lead singer for the bands Gary Lee and the Sis O Clock News, Good and Plenty, and Wooden Nickel. The bands played locally at the Sturgis Bowl, the Sturgis Eagles lodge and the Sturgis Moose lodge. He was a member of the Baptist church. Surviving are his wife, Olga H. Lawson of Shipshewana; three daughters, Erica Lynn Lawson of South Bend, Ind., Melody Charmaine and Patricia K. (Rick)Young, both of White Pigeon; eight grandchildren; a sister, Herma; and a brother, Connie. He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 brother and sisters. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Services are at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sam’s Place, 60495 Lutz Road, Three Rivers. Arrangements were handled by the Farrand Funeral Home of White Pigeon. Irving S. Brown, 97, formerly of Adrian, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010. Irving was born Aug. 31, 1912, in Adrian, the son of Floyd and Vera (Powers) Brown. On Nov. 4, 1937, he married Elsie Hebb in Angola, Ind. Irving and Elsie celebrated over 66 years of marriage prior to her death in 2004. Irving worked for Kreighoff as an iron worker for 40 years, retiring in 1977. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed deer hunting and snowmobiling at the family cabin up north. After wintering in Florida for several years, Irving and Elsie made Lake Placid their permanent residence. Irving was a member of the Bethany Assembly of God Church in Adrian and the First Assembly of Lake Placid. He was a former Mason and a member of the Ironworkers Local 55. Surviving Irving are his children, Roy (Nonie) Brown, Betty (Larry) Snyder, both of Lake Placid, Fla., and Joyce (Rudolph) Hanna of Adrian; six grandchildren, Steve (Sandi) Brown, Richard and John French, Todd (Nikki) Hanna, Tam (Brett) Terry, and Sherry (Dan) Shaffer; a stepgrandson, Rodney Snyder; eight great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a stepgranddaughter, Angie Cattalino, five brothers and four sisters. The funeral service for Irving will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, at Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Jewett and the Rev. Lloyd Jewett officiating. She was born on Jan. 29, 1932, in Fulton County, Ohio, to the late Harold and Geneva (Kline) Huntley. She married LaVon Campbell on Aug. 15, 1978, in Tazewell, Tenn., and he survives. Marilyn graduated from the Gorham Fayette High School Class of 1950. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Dutch Village store in West Unity, and had previously worked many years at the former Foodland store in Fayette. Marilyn’s greatest passions in her life were her grandchildren and gardening. Surviving Marilyn besides her husband, LaVon, are one son, Thomas (Bonnie) Berry of Bellefontaine, Ohio; five daughters, Sandra (Matt) Crommer of Waldron, Mich., Brenda Richardson (Bill Dickey) of Waldron, Lisa Meyers of West Unity, Rebecca Metcalf of Cement City, Mich., and Vickie Betz of Queens Creek, Ariz.; a sister, Janet Crisenbery of Flippin, Ark.; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by two siblings, Martha Moore and Gene Huntley. Max Laverne Mitchell died surrounded by his loving family on June 6, 2010 at Cameron Hospital. He was born Jan. 11, 1920 in Ray, Ind. to Carlyle and Juanita (Pridgeon) Mitchell. Max attended the Fremont, Ind. schools and graduated from Fremont High School in 1937. While at Fremont, he participated for four years in varsity baseball, basketball and track. During his senior year, he won the state sectional long jump title and went on to participate at the state meet. He attended Western Michigan University, where he received his BA degree in 1941 and attended Indiana University receiving his Masters degree in 1951.  He married Thelma Martin in 1940 and they lived in Fremont their entire married lives. Max was a teacher, coach, principal and school board member at Fremont High School for over 35 years and for three years was principal of Orland High School. During his working career, he also served as assistant cashier for The First National Bank of Fremont. Max was a World War II veteran and spent two years as a staff sergeant in the Army and was stationed in the Philippine Islands. When he retired from the Fremont Community Schools, the school board honored him by naming all athletic fields The Max L. Mitchell Complex. He was elected to the Indiana High School Athletic Association Board of Control and was Vice President of its Athletic Council. He held many offices while at Fremont: President of the Town Board, Chamber of Commerce President, Commander of the American Legion, 50-year member of Masonic Lodge, 50-year member of The Pythion Lodge and long-time member of the Fremont United Methodist Church. Max enjoyed baseball, reading, golf, and fishing and was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Indiana Hoosier Basketball team. Max is survived by his wife Thelma, daughters Patty (Jerry) Champion and Kathy Lantz and son Marty (Shirlee) Mitchell. He is also survived by his sister Rosemary (Roger) Burlingame. He and Thelma have nine grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Sisters Janet Goodwin and Julee Lodder preceded him in death as well as his parents. Services are as follows and burial will be at Ray Covenentor Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Ind. Delbert Eugene White, 84, of Camden and Goodland, Fla., passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at home under the loving care of his family. Born Aug. 31, 1925, in Montgomery, he was the son of Ray and Hazel (Thorne) White and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1943. Del was a medic in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific on the USS Barnes aircraft carrier from 1943-45. He was co-owner and operator of the Montgomery Egg Co.,  for 25 years and also owned and operated Del’s Mobile Homes and The Bluffs. He was instrumental in developing the land at Quincy Heights, Marble Lake and Lake Diane. Del served on the board of directors for the Camden Development Corporation and the Camden Telephone Company. He was a member of the Montgomery American Legion and the Elks and Moose Lodges. Outside of his work and family, Del enjoyed traveling. His journeys took him to Iceland, the Amazon, Costa Rica, Europe, Mexico and Africa. He also enjoyed local travels, specifically on a Motor-Sailor through the Inland Coastal Waterways and a boat cruise through the Great Lakes from Niagara Falls to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Del was very proud of the fact that he had crossed the International Dateline 25 times as a sailor and later in his travels. On Dec. 21, 1944, he married Jean Stewart and she survives in Camden. Also surviving: three children, Ned (Lisa) White of North Adams; Terri Friedlund (Dave Windle)  Hillsdale and Susan (Rodney) Cortright of Jonesville; special friend, Evelyn Cook of Camden; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters (Mary Miller, Maxine Snyder, Helen Hernandez and Frances Percy), one grandson and one great-grandson. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday  at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Don Lee officiating. Visitation is scheduled from noon until time of service Sunday. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hillsdale County.

Her parents, three sisters, and one brother preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard A. “Dick” Bumpus on Dec. 19, 2009, whom she married on Feb. 14, 1948; one son, Michael Bumpus and one brother, Herman Walters. She is survived by two daughters, Karen (Steve) Dewey and Susan (Alan) Cook all of North Adams; one daughter-in-law, Marcia Bumpus of North Adams; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Shum of Iowa; one brother, Charles (Peggy) Walters of Texas and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bumpus was a lifelong resident of North Adams and enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with her family. She was a member of the North Adams United Methodist Church, the North Adams UMW and the Adams Grange. At her request cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mrs. Martha L. Bumpus will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale beginning at 2 p.m. Friday with Pastor Paul Hane officiating. A private interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery. Walter O. Fitzcharles, age 66, of rural Montpelier, Ohio, died at 3:37 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2010, shortly after admittance to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind. Mr. Fitzcharles was a 1962 graduate of Edgerton High School. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Edgerton Fire Department for many years and was a member of its championship waterball team. He was employed with Pretz Stark Construction, Bill Siebenaler Construction, the Pulaski Co-op, and Babb Trucking and retired from Weber Sand and Gravel. He was a member of the Montpelier Eagles, Montpelier Moose Lodge and the Pioneer American Legion. Walter O. Fitzcharles was born on Feb. 24, 1944, in Edgerton, Ohio, the son of Alvin Estel and Gertrude Mae (Wiles) Fitzcharles. He married Patricia A. Mason on Oct. 13, 1962, in Cooney, Ohio, and she survives. He is survived by four sons, Todd (Joni) Fitzcharles, of Mount Airy, N.C., Terry (Mary Jane) Fitzcharles, of Bryan, Ohio, Tim (Pam) Fitzcharles and Tracy (Dawn) Fitzcharles, both of Edgerton, and one daughter, Teresa (Andy) Stickney, of Montpelier, Ohio. Also surviving are one brother, Vaughn Fitzcharles, of Edgerton, and 14 grandchildren, Nathan (Michelle) and Ashley McCandless; Megan Eicher; Jason, Chelsey, Samantha, Cassie, Jeremy Dayne and Kole Fitzcharles; Damion Heinze; Tanner Stickney; Chandler Nester; and Kennedy Stuut; and three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Koleton McCandless and Ainsleigh Papenbrock. She was preceded in death by her father, Ellis Sparks; her mother, Elsie Gipson; six brothers and one sister. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, June 12 at the Burr Oak Missionary Church, 327 N. Third St., Burr Oak. Dinner will follow the service in the fellowship center. Robert L. Page Leslie Born February 3, 1930 in Lansing, MI, the son of Ruth and Roray Page, died June 6, 2010 at the age of 80. Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was a life member of the VFW Post 7309 in Mason, holding several offices. He was also involved with the American Legion Post 0238. Robert retired from Oldsmobile in 1985 as a Lieutenant in Plant Security and Fire Protection and participated in the Lansing GM Salaried Retirees Club. He enjoyed racing motorcycles, and stock cars. Hunting, fishing and bowling were some of his favorite activities, but his children and grandchildren gave him the greatest joy. He was former president of the Mason Bowling Association and inducted into the 2002 Mason Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brother Gene; and sister Joyce Willitt. Surviving is his loving wife and fishing/bowling partner of 48 years, Beverly; son Dana (Andrea) Page; daughter Laurie (Steve) Matthews; grandchildren Lauren, Jordan, and Trent Page; little ones, Zachariah and Benjamin Matthews; and sister Barbara (Jim) Turbok. Robert Peter West, age 77, formerly of Portage Lake in Mendon Township, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010, at his home in Sturgis. He was born Dec. 17, 1932, in Oak Park, Ill., a son of Peter Jacob and Ruth Maude (Larson) West. Robert graduated from Austin High School in Chicago. He attended the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, where he met his wife, Lorraine Prior Salmon. They were later married on Aug. 28, 1952. in Dundee, Ill. Robert was a veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne, earning the rank of sergeant. He worked in retail most of his life and was owner-operator of Gambles Hardware Store in Sturgis and WestMotor Home Leasing. After retirement, he enjoyed working as a security guard and spending time at the lake with his dog, Elf. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Three Rivers, where he was on the vestry. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine; three daughters, Vivian Hope (Michael) Prapuolenis of Wheaton, Ill., Julianne “Julie” Faith (Daniel) Cottin of Sturgis and Linda Love (Thomas) Cottin of Lawrence, Kan.; nine grandchildren, Jonathan and Jasmine Prapuolenis, Dan, Katie and Angela Cottin, Cole (fiancé Dan Phelps), Joe, Mick and Tommy Cottin; a brother, Henry (Georgia) West of Lake Forest, Ill.; a sister, Tomi Miner of Aurora, Ill.; and a cousin, Virginia Cump of Crystal Lake, Ill. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral celebrating the life of Robert P. West will be held at 11 a.m. June 19 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 321 N. Main St., Three Rivers. The family suggests memorial donations be directed to the American Diabetes Association or Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Erwin Allan Ruhlig, age 81, of Athens, Ill., and a former resident of Sturgis and pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis, received his crown of glory at his home Thursday afternoon, June 3, 2010. He was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Dexter, a son of the late Emil and Hazel (Campbell) Ruhlig. The sainted Rev. Carl Brauer baptized, confirmed, married and ordained him. He grew up in the Dexter area, vegetable farming with his father and selling the produce to the Detroit markets. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. Upon discharge, he attended Concordia Theology Seminary in Springfield, Ill., earning his college and theological degrees and graduating in 1961. On Aug. 7, 1959, he married Karen Keller at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor. The Lord blessed their union with five children. Pastor Ruhlig served his vicarage year at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Miami. He served parishes in St. James Lutheran Church, Northrop, Minn. (1961-1967), Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Indianola, Iowa (1967-1974) and Trinity Lutheran Church, Sturgis (1974-1998). In 1998, he moved to Athens, Ill., and served as the executive director for the Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ (OAFC), a youth evangelism program serving all of the United States. After retiring, he served as the business manager of OAFC. Training and experience taught him to be an excellent listener, counselor and evangelist. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 50 years, Karen; two sons, Steven (Vanessa) Ruhlig of Champaign, Ill., and the Rev. Michael (Tammy) Ruhlig of Tuscola, Ill.; two daughters, Beth (Kristian) Fosse of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Sarah (Derek) Dunnagan of Peoria, Ill.; one granddaughter, Zoe Ruhlig; eight grandsons, Ethan and Judah Ruhlig, Jonathan and Bradley Ruhlig and Adam, Aaron, Jacob and Joseph Fosse; three sisters, Alice Gall of Ann Arbor, Helen (Howard) Schafer of Pioneer, Ohio, and Lois (Donald) Lutz of Jeffersonville, Ind.; one brother, Albert (Madonna) Ruhlig of Dexter; mother-in-law, Hazel Keller of Leesburg, Fla.; sister-in-law, Patricia Murphy of Adamsville, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews covering four generations. He was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Ruhlig; two brothers; and two sisters. For God so loved Erwin that he gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to suffer, die, and rise in victory for Erwin, so that if Erwin believes in Jesus as his Savior from sin, Erwin shall not parish, but Erwin shall have everlasting life. (refer to John 3:16) A family and friends gathering will take place from 5-7 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Athens, Ill., where services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. Following the service Pastor Ruhlig will be transported to Sturgis. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Miller Amoco Company in Rockford, Mich., and retired in 1983. He was a member of Wheaton Post #76 American Legion of Carol Stream, Ill., where he was a 21-year member. He enjoyed camping and playing his banjo in the the blue grass band, Down Yonders. Surviving are his loving companion, Jan Johnson of Constantine; daughter, Verla Jean (Kip)Yoder of Kalamazoo; son, Deldon D. Vernon DeVantier, 78, of Blissfield went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at his home. Vernon was born on March 2, 1932, to Edward and Thekla DeVantier in Bergholtz, N.Y. On July 2, 1955, in Lewiston, N.Y., he married Harriet Landres. At the age of 9, Vernon heard a missionary speak and from that moment on he decided that he wanted to be a pastor. He received his bachelor’s degree from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, in 1954, and his Master’s in Divinity from the Evangelical Theological Lutheran Seminary in Columbus in 1958. His first call was to St. Mark’s and Bethlehem Lutheran Churches in Defiance, Ohio. In 1965, he was called to serve at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blissfield, where he ministered for 23 years. Before retiring, he also served at Zion Lutheran Church in Petersburg, Mich., and St. Michael Lutheran Church in Ottawa Lake, Mich., where he was a member and sang in the choir. In addition to serving the Lord, Vernon also gave back to the community. He was a past member of the Blissfield Rotary. He also served as a board member of the Bliss Liewert Senior Center, and of the Lenawee Parks and Recreation Board. Because of his love and concern for the unborn, one of his greatest joys was serving for 30 years on the Living Water Works, Crisis Pregnancy Center Board in Adrian, Mich. Vernon is survived by his wife of 54 years, Harriet DeVantier of Blissfield, one son, James (Michelle) DeVantier of Blissfield, and three daughters, Louise (Gregory) Solak of St. Joseph, Mich., Deborah (David) Kimmelman of Riga and Barbara (Ronald) Schmidt of Blissfield; 11 grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Solak, Erica, Lindsay and David DeVantier, Kelly, James and Katie Kimmelman and Amy, Eric and Anna Schmidt; three brothers, Edward (Elaine) DeVantier, Roger (Doris) DeVantier and Loren (Norma) DeVantier; and many other wonderful relatives. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Thekla. Funeral services for Vernon will be held on Monday, June 7, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Lutheran Church, 5790 W. Esterline, 94, of Quincy, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Drew’s Place of Coldwater.   She was born March 30, 1916 in Quincy, the daughter of Harry and Ruby (Kenyon) Gowdy and graduated from Quincy High School in 1934. She furthered her education at Ypsilanti Normal School (now Eastern Michigan University) obtaining a degree in early childhood education. Vivian taught school at Jennings Elementary School in Quincy for 32 years. In addition to her dedication as a teacher, she touched many lives through her lifelong community involvements, including membership at the Quincy United Methodist Church, life member of the Quincy Order of Eastern Star Chapter #12, Friend of the Quincy Library and membership in the MEA and NEA. In 1938, she married Cleo Esterline and he preceded her in death in 1998. Survivors include daughter Janice Kowalski of Quincy, sons James Esterline of Florida and John (Cheryl) Esterline of Coldwater, sister Allene Foster of Hillsdale, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law Martin Kowalski, a brother, a sister and a great-grandson. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11:30 a.m., at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy, with interment following in Lakeview Cemetery. She was preceded in death by three children, Larry, Sally and Bradley Wegner; a grandson, Shawn Moore; her parents; five brothers, Harold, Lee, George, Charles and Vernon Irelan; and a sister, Mary Fern Cogar. Funeral services for Wanda will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Blissfield, with Pastor Gary Leking officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Blissfield. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 7, 2010, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday, at Immanuel Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. William Delmer Cole, age 70, of Adrian died on Friday, June 4, 2010, at his home. He was born on March 2, 1940, in Hackleberg, Ala., to Dee and Ella (Anglin) Cole. On Oct. 16, 1971, he married Irene Miller in Hudson, Mich., and she survives. Bill had been employed by Hydro Aluminum, retiring in 2002. He loved to go hunting and fishing, tinkering with small engines, and playing with his Play Station. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, Irene, he is survived by his children, David Cole of Bradenton, Fla., Becky Cole of Michigan City, Ind., Tim Cole of Bradenton, Fla., Jason “Jay” (Jessica) Cole of Morenci and Jeff (Crissie) Cole of Brandon, Miss.; two brothers, Bill Cole of Hodges, Ala., and Gene (Joan) Cole of Hamilton, Ala.; a sister, Barbra Ann Cole of Hamilton, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Amber, Amanda, Ashile, Sarah, Stacy, Matt, Jeffrey Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Noah, Briannah, Jacob and Abigale; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmond, Olan and Amos Cole; his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Olive and Vance Miller; and a daughter-in-law, Jodie Cole. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with Pastor Christy Shaw officiating. Burial will be in Lenawee Hills Memorial Gardens, Tecumseh. Karl H. Olmstead Aug. 17, 1925 — June 5, 2010 Karl H. Olmstead died peacefully Saturday, June 5, 2010, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, after a short illness.Karl Herbert Olmstead was born Aug. 17, 1925 in Amboy Township, to Arno and Phebe Olmstead.  On Nov. 18, 1944, he married Mary Lou Carter, in Hillsdale, and she survives.   Karl and Mary Lou had four sons: Karl Arno, Kenneth Wayne, Bradley Dale, and Douglas Duane. He spent his entire life in the Frontier area, except while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a volunteer fireman with the Woodbridge Township Fire Department for many years. He loved hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He loved his family very much. Karl spent most of his working years at the Chevrolet dealership in Hillsdale, retiring in 1990, after 35 years.   Karl is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gale Olmstead of Frontier and Leo (Norma) Olmstead of Florida; one sister, Edna Piriczky of Hillsdale; one son, Karl Arno and one great-grandson, Austin Curry.   Karl is survived by three sons, Kenny (Susan) Olmstead of Frontier, Brad (Donna) Olmstead of Hillsdale, and Doug (Patty) Olmstead of Stryker, Ohio. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.   Visitation for Karl H. Olmstead will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Alan Fenstermaker officiating. Interment will follow in the Frontier Cemetery. Memorials in the name of Karl H. Olmstead are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.
