Agnes Evilsiser Engel, 92, passed away peacefully Friday, June 25, 2010. She was born in Adrian Oct. 31, 1917 to the late Marion and Viola Mae Wolfe Evilsiser. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Arthur Engel; five sisters; and one brother. Agnes graduated from Adrian High School and from Lancaster (Ohio) Business College. She retired as executive secretary from Oro Manufacturing Co., and was a member of Central United Methodist Chuch. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, June 28, 2010, in Gordon Funeral Home, Monroe, N.C. Burial will be at a later date in Palmyra, Michigan. Mrs. Engel is survived by a stepson, Robert A. Engel and wife Nancy of Monroe, N.C.; several nieces and nephews, including Michael Langthorne of South Bend, Ind., and niece Judy Mix of Spring Hill, Fla. The family will receive friends following the service at Gordon Funeral and Cremation Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. She enjoyed square dancing, picture painting and flower gardening. She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Weaver. She is survived by her husband, Ronald A. Weaver; son, Ronald S. Weaver; sister, Betty Nicholls all of Michigan; two grandchildren, Tara and Dustin Weaver both of Ohio and two great grandchildren. As per her wishes there will be no Viewing or Memorial Service. Daniel James Barfield, 23, of Sturgis, died Thursday evening, June 17, 2010, in Howe, Ind., due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was born Aug. 29, 1986 in Sturgis, a son of James and Vickie (Hackett) Barfield. Daniel had resided in Sturgis his entire life and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 2005. He had been employed by Burr Oak Tool and Gauge in Sturgis since 2004. He enjoyed shooting at the St. Joseph County Conservation Club, bowling, scuba diving, fishing, golfing, tinkering with motorcycles and playing video games. He actively participated in paintball and Airsoft. Daniel truly loved time spent with his many friends and family. He is survived by his parents; two sisters, Kalyn (Justin) Day of LaGrange, Ind., and Mckenna Barfield of Sturgis; a grandmother, Retha Lancaster of Burr Oak; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clifford Hackett, James Richard Barfield and Jean Clark Barfield. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral service celebrating the life of Daniel James Barfield will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Robert Keim will officiate. David worked construction for many years through the Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Union Local #1. In addition to his wife Janet of Monroe and parents Robert and Katherine of Adrian, David is survived by five daughters, Rebecca Hunter of Temperance, Kaycee Raines of Toledo, Kelly (Kyle) Kidder of Jupiter, Florida, Jade Cutshall of Tennessee and Jessica Souviron of Tennessee; a brother, Mike (Sharon) DeGroot of Britton; and seven grandchildren: Audre Lynn Hunter, Conner Witfoth, Brooke Witfoth, Sage Raines, Nolan Leo Kidder, Makenzi Foolks and Ashton Cutshall. Dorthelda Sue Eichorn, age 70, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010, at home. She was born Aug. 12, 1939, in Indianapolis, a daughter of the late Harvey and Josephine (Troyer) Schwartz. Dorthelda has been a resident of Sturgis the past 50 years and on Sept. 1, 1956 in Middlebury, Ind., she married Lewis Carl Eichorn Sr.  He preceded her in death March 10, 2000.  She was a homemaker and was involved with the Girl Scouts and helped her husband with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and earned the Silver Beaver Award.  She enjoyed singing in the church choir and singing in nursing homes, other churches, prisons, and the Dwight Alexander Band. Surviving are two daughters, Debra (Robert) Kinsey and Tamara Eichorn, both of Sturgis; 3 sons, Lewis Carl Eichorn Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Jeffrey D. (Dorothy) Eichorn and Larry L. (Jill) Eichorn, both of Sturgis; three grandchildren, Lewis Carl Fuhrmann-Eichorn III, Jeffrey Adam Carl Eichorn, and Nichole Elizabeth Marie Eichorn; a great-granddaughter, Rebeka Ray-Linn Eichorn; and two step-grandchildren, Cameron Hacker and Eli Hacker; three brothers, Steve Bullard of Howe, Ind., Danny Bullard of Sturgis, and Herbert Michael Bullard of N. Vernon, Ind.; and three sisters, Cindy Ward, Mary Schaefer, and Doris Jean Koennkramer, all of Greensburg, Ind.    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son, Darryl Lee; two sisters, Betty Kopp and Jackie Bullard; and one brother, Joe Bullard.  The family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Home - Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Ellen M. (Shanks) Howell, age 106, went home to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ on June 23, 2010, at the Saline Evangelical Home under the care of St. Joseph Mercy Hospice, Saline. She was born on June 8, 1904, in Colombo, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), the daughter of Matthew and Annie (Orr) Shanks. Her mother died of enteric (typhoid) fever in 1907. She was raised in Glasgow, Scottland, by her Aunt Katie (Catherine Blackwood Shanks) and was affectionately known by her grandfather as “Our Beautiful Wee Lassie.” She immigrated to Canada in 1924 on the Athenia and settled in Toronto. (The Athenia was sunk by U-boats in 1942.) She married Homer Howell (1897-1978) on her birthday, June 8, 1932. Ellen was a member of the Clinton Baptist Church and former member of Grace Bible Church in Tecumseh. She, along with her husband Homer, owned a farm in Quincy from 1947-1953, they then owned and operated the Tipton Hardware (apartments) 1953-1970. She was an avid crocheter, knitter and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was also a foster grandparent for Boysville from 1978-1988. She is survived by her sons, Rayford Matthew (Jean Blakely) Howell of Traverse City, Mich., H. Ronald (Betty Jean Ferguson) Howell of Ann Arbor, Mich.; daughters, Catherine Ann Hart, Mary Inez (William Court) Nightswander; son, Wendell Herbert (Mary Elizabeth Seeburger) Howell; 15 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Ellen was preceded in death by one infant granddaughter. He has been a resident of Branch county since 1957, moving from Sturgis. Gene was self employed, hauling milk for the Pet Milk Company in Angola, Ind., for 26 years, retiring in 1990. Following his retirement he worked in construction with the local Amish and at the Wal-Mart Garden Center in Coldwater. He also continued to run his auctioneering service, which he very much enjoyed. Gene’s family was the most important thing in his life. He enjoyed going on family trips, camping and playing cards. He loved people and will be missed by all who knew him. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Ida Smith; sons, Larry (Natalie) Smith and Earl (Cathy) Smith, both of Coldwater, Scottie (Melissa) Smith of Bronson; daughters, Arlene (Bob) Weddle of Bronson and Connie (Chuck) Anthony of Coldwater; brother Fred (Charlene) Smith Jr. of Bronson; sisters, Gela Matthews and Winifred Wells, both of Florida and Minnie May Nolen of Sturgis; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Jack, at the age of one; brother, Norval Smith; and sister, Catherine Akins. Lillie M. Ayers, age 93, of Adrian passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. Lillie was born Sept. 24, 1916, to Paul Elijah and Nellie (Baty) Lay in Atwood, Ala. She married J. Hubert Chamblee on May 9, 1934, in Ala. He preceded her in death Dec. 22, 1943. She later married Elmer Ayers on July 16, 1948. He died Jan. 30, 1983. Lillie was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two grandsons and two daughters.   Survivors include a daughter, Jean Humphries of Adrian; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Gordon of Tennessee; and her nieces and caregivers, Mary Wiley, Cindy Maniscalco and Linda File. Lillie was a seamstress at Maurice’s for 22 years. In her retirement, she enjoyed doing alterations from her home. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Adrian. The funeral service for Lillie will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Wagley Funeral Home with Pastor Darrell Hyder officiating. Burial will follow at Palmyra Cemetery. Maynard Marchand, age 83, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Sturgis Hospital following a short illness. He was born Nov. 16, 1926, in LaGrange, Ind., a son of the late Charley and Retha (Fleck) Marchand. On July 14, 1947, he married Martha Della Miller in Angola, Ind. She preceded him in death June 29, 1996. Maynard had been a resident of Sturgis most of his life, living his earlier years in LaGrange. He had been employed by the Harter Corporation in Sturgis for 46 years before retiring and enjoyed fishing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World WarII. Surviving are two sons, Michael (Diane) Marchand of Sturgis and Robert (Larisa) Marchand of Sterling Heights; a daughter, Pamela (Bud) Conley of Finley; five grandchildren, Kenneth, Casey, Shaun, Michael and Marc Marchand; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five brothers; and three sisters. The family will receive friends and relatives from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Hackman Family Funeral Home Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Services celebrating the life of Maynard Marchand will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. George Cleverley officiating. Michael (Marcia) Cook of Rockford; two sisters, Florence Strong of Hillsdale and Elma Zimmerman of Arizona; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Olive Dorthea Gushwa, age 91, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village. She was born in Three Rivers, on July 31, 1918, a daughter of the late Edward Hugh and Elmira (Parsons) Baker. Olive had been a resident of Sturgis and the Three Rivers area all of her life. She graduated from Three Rivers High School with the class of 1936 and was a good athlete excelling in all sports. On March 4, 1942, in Bryon, Ohio, she married Fredric L. Gushwa. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1968. She was a homemaker and a beautician working at Cramer’s Beauty Shop in Three Rivers. She then worked and retired from the Kirsch Company in Sturgis after many years of service. Olive was a member of the Lima United Methodist Church, Mintdale Women’s Club, and enjoyed being outdoors, traveling, and spending time with her family. Surviving are two sons, James (Kristine) Gushwa of Jones, and Gary (Gail) Gushwa of Sturgis; six grandchildren, Fred Gushwa of Sturgis, Heidi Sorkoram of Kalamazoo, Karen Marie (David) Yearick of Raleigh, N.C., David Gushwa, Stacie (Cary) Cookson, and Steven (Holly) Gushwa all of Sturgis; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Ruth Schug and Arlene Nole; and two daughters-in-law, Mary Gushwa and Janet Gushwa. Patricia "Pat" Rudin Springfield, IL Patricia "Pat" Rudin, 81, of Springfield, passed away at 12:14 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 2010 at St. John's Hospital, surrounded by her family. Pat was born in Springfield, the daughter of Thomas C. and Therese Peifer Hilliard. She married Carl R. Rudin on January 31, 1948 at St. Agnes Church. He preceded her in death on February 15, 2010. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Eileen Baltusevich and Joan Zeigler; and her aunt, Mae Hilliard. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and attended Springfield Junior College. Pat enjoyed golfing and was a member of several women's golf leagues. She was an avid bridge player and developed many long-lasting friendships from playing. Pat also enjoyed travel, history and reading, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. She met her husband while working for The Citizens Tribune newspaper. She helped him begin Rudin Printing Company in 1956 where she worked for many years. Pat is survived by her four children: Becky (Fred) Fliege of Springfield, Carl (Sharon) Rudin of Sherman, Janet (Greg) McClelland of Lansing, MI and Nancy Simpson of Denver, CO; seven grandchildren: Ben (Becca) Rudin, Chris (Allison) Rudin, Erin (Dave) Claassen, Eric Fliege, Austin Simpson, Sara (Sean) Carroll and Denise Pachlhofer; three great-grandchildren: Elijah, Liam and Aspen Rudin; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was born Dec. 11, 1936, in Chicago, a daughter of Samuel and Ann (Branch) Gottlieb. Pat graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1955.  On Nov. 6, 1955, she married David Knisely in Constantine. Pat worked in food service at Constantine Public Schools from 1984 until 1998. She had previously worked at the Drake Casket Company. Pat enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casinos to play the slot machines. Pat also loved to travel, especially vacationing at Drummond Island.  Pat  liked flower gardening, fishing, cooking and crochet. She was a member of the “Gutter Strutters” bowling team. Surviving Pat are her husband, David Knisely of Constantine; daughter, Kimberly (Tim) Hesketh of Middlebury, Ind.; sons, Keith (Jane) Knisely of Union, and Bill (Susan) Knisely of Niles; eight grandchildren Christopher, Jonathon, Caty, Andy, David, and Tyler Knisely, Ashley Cooper  and Bailey Lang; and sister-in-law Janet (Bernie) Heign, Constantine.  She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Shirley Bonebright. Relatives and friends will be received 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine. Religious services will be held at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Constantine, at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Dennis Smith officiating.  Interment will be at Constantine Cemetery. Robert Gaines Wilbar, age 66, of Adrian, formerly of Tecumseh, died Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Bixby Medical Center, Adrian. He was born on May 21, 1944, in Lake City, Tenn., the son of William and Gladys (Webb) Wilbar. He married Judy Pinter on April 6, 1968, in Tecumseh. Bob came to the Tecumseh area in 1951 from Lake City, Tenn. He was an avid runner on the track team for Tecumseh High School, attaining many medals while there. He was a member of the Berean Baptist Church, Adrian, was very dedicated to Christian Education, and enjoyed singing. Bob was a Veteran of the United States Army, then worked as a custodian for the Tecumseh Public Schools for more than 20 years and was a very successful salesperson for West Bend Cookware. He was a loving father who enjoyed bragging about his family, was a very kind and gentle man and will be missed by his family and all those who knew him. He is survived by one son, William (Susan) Wilbar of Adrian; two daughters, Jeannine (Frank) LaVoy of Tecumseh and Laura (Mark) Gilbert of Valparaiso, Ind.; one brother, James (Maria) Wilbar of Fullerton, Calif.; two sisters, Barbara (Melvin) Scheffler of Clinton, Mich., Liza Phairow of Shoreline, Wash.; and four grandchildren, Zach, Kendra, Alexis and Andrew. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice Wilbar-Machan and Julie Parrish. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 27, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of the Handler Funeral Homes, where funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 28. Pastor Doug Rogers of Berean Baptist Church, Adrian, will officiate. Visitation will also be at the funeral home from 1 p.m. on Monday until the time of services. Steven C. Strong Charlotte Steven C. Strong passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the age of 61 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born April 14, 1949, he was preceded in death by his parents, Fred C. and Wanda J. Strong. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Nancy; daughter, Jennifer (Blake) Upright and granddaughters, Hannah, Lauren and Grace Upright; brother, Derek (Ann) Strong; brothers-in-law, Greg (Jean) Thompson and Brad Thompson; sisters-in-law, Kelly (Ken) Criscoe and Carol Baker; aunts, Velma and Edith Mae Benham; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Steve joined Oldsmobile after serving in the Army, and worked 30 years until his retirement in 2006. He was a proud member of UAW Local 652, serving in various elected and appointed positions. He loved the game of golf and enjoyed his many golf buddies. Steve was a good man who loved his family and friends very much. He was always willing to offer a helping hand. We cherish our memories of his warmth, generosity, and humor. We will miss him dearly. The family invites all who knew and loved Steve to a Visitation on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, Michigan. She was born Sept. 10, 1919, in Medina Township, Lenawee County, to Lawrence and Lela (Cisco) Zimmerman. She lived in the Rollin area before moving to Adrian in 1977.   She was a graduate of Prattville High School and married Winfield “Bill” Austin on Feb. 24, 1938, at Bryan, Ohio. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1980. She was a member of the Rollin Baptist Church and attended the Trenton Hills United Brethren Church in Adrian. She also was a member of the Senior Center in Adrian.   Surviving are her daughter Joan (Richard) Lockwood of Montpelier, Ohio; her son Dean (Raquel) Austin of Apache Junction, Arizona; six grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Elden (Mary) Zimmerman of Montpelier, Ohio and her sisters, Thelma Munsell of Perrysburg, Ohio and Phyllis (Richard) McCloe of Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son Mike, a grandson Lance Lockwood, a sister Lela Shinaberry and by her brothers, Lowell and Cisco Zimmerman. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2010, in the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Keith Smith officiating. William “Bill” Schuch, age 91, of Adrian passed away Friday, June 25, 2010, at his home under the loving care of his family. Bill was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Morenci, the son of Clarence and Louise (Marzolf) Schuch. During World War II, he served in the Army’s 888th Ordinance Division and was stationed in the CBI Theatre.   On Dec. 4, 1945, Bill married Gertrude E. Gilbert in Seward, Ohio. Gertrude, his wife of over 64 years survives.   Bill worked at Stubnitz Greene in Adrian for 37 years, retiring in 1979. Bill and Gertrude were well known in the community for their homemade peanut brittle, which they started making and selling in 1966. Bill was a faithful member of Jasper Bible Church. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by three children: Calvin Schuch of Jackson; Gary (Shelly) Schuch of Brooklyn; and Susan (Mark) Vanderpool of Adrian; four grandchildren: Lisa (Kevin) Frey, Christopher Vanderpool, Gabriel (Rowena) Schuch and Nathan (Jennifer) Schuch; four great grandchildren: Gavin, Austin, Taylor and Jordyn; two sisters and one brother. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. The funeral service for Bill will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Jasper Bible Church with Rev. Bruce Jewett officiating. Burial will follow at Hunt Cemetery with military honors conducted by the VFW Annis Fint Post #1584. Visitation will be held at Wagley Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Condolences may be sent to www.wagleyfuneralhome.com.
