Albert J. Turmel Albert J. Turmel, age 74, of Warren, died June 2, 2010. Mr. Turmel was born December 2, 1935, and grew up in Hazel Park. He attended St. Benedict's Catholic School, and was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War 1954-1955. On May 10, 1957, he married his beautiful bride, Janet Kay Gerrie. They had 48 years together, until her death on October 9, 2005. "Al" loved to hunt and fish. Golfing and drinking were his hobbies. Al was a very skilled model maker and was loved by all who knew him. He is survived by his sons, Tom and Jerry; three grandchildren; one great-grandson. Visitation Friday, 2-9 p.m. at the Rudy Funeral Home, 25650 Van Dyke (10 1/2 Mile). Services at the funeral home Saturday, noon. Burial at Oakview Cemetery.

Arla J. Jaquay-Harker, 58, of Howe, Ind.,  died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind. Mrs. Harker lived her lifetime in Howe and was a homemaker. Mrs. Harker was born on Dec. 24, 1951, in Sturgis, Mich., to Arl J. and Rosabelle Jane (Hambright) Jaquay.  On Dec. 10, 1970, she married Lavern Harker in Howe. He survives in Howe. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Cherish and Jeff Baker of Howe Ind.; and a sister, Marsha McAlister of LaGrange, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Penny Jo Parish in May 2010. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. She graduated from Adrian High School. Carol retired from General Motors in 1996 with 30 years of service at Fisher Body and Inland/Delphi in Adrian. Carol was a member of the Moose. She was a passionate golfer, playing on several leagues. She also enjoyed bowling. Carol loved gardening and was known for her beautiful flower gardens. Carol is survived by her children, Troy Rinehart of Las Vegas, Karen (Ed) Froelich of Onsted, and Craig Schwartz of Las Vegas; four grandchildren, Evan and Josh Froelich and Carissa and Adajah Schwartz; sister, Donna (Joe) McGuire of Adrian; brother, Tim Hamilton, also of Adrian; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Dick and Jim Hamilton. At Carol’s request, cremation will take place and all services will be private. David Gordon Ouderkirk Midland David Gordon Ouderkirk, 62 of Midland and long time resident of the Lansing area, died Wednesday evening June 2, 2010 at Tendercare of Midland. He was born on November 20, 1947 in Mt. Pleasant, son of Vale F. Ouderkirk and the late Thelma D. (Yager) Ouderkirk. David had spent most of his life in the Lansing area. He attended Williamston Schools. David married the former Diane (Moore) Rankin on November 29, 1996 in Lansing. She died on February 11, 2010. He had worked for auto dealerships and had ended up working at Magna Power-Train. David loved to go camping. He loved his family and above all loved his wife. He was involved in Special Olympics and was a member of a pool league. David served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. He is survived by his father, Vale F. Ouderkirk of Midland; by his children, Tracy Ouderkirk, Kimberly Meece and Michael Ouderkirk; by his step-children, Jennifer Archambault and Jason Wojack; by his brother, Paul (Janine) Ouderkirk of Hope; his sister, Diane Stone of Rosebush; and by sister-in-law, Becky Ouderkirk, 7 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and all his friends at Tendercare. In addition to his wife and mother, David was predeceased by brothers, Edward Ouderkirk, Daniel Ouderkirk and Stephen Ouderkirk. Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010, from the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street. Rev. Wayne Shidler will officiate. Burial will be in the Eaton Rapids Cemetery. David's family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until time of service.   Delbert Eugene White, 84, of Camden and Goodland, Fla., passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at home under the loving care of his family. Born Aug. 31, 1925, in Montgomery, he was the son of Ray and Hazel (Thorne) White and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1943. Del was a medic in the United States Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific on the USS Barnes aircraft carrier from 1943-1945. He was co-owner and operator of the Montgomery Egg Company for 25 years and also owned and operated Del’s Mobile Homes and The Bluffs. He was instrumental in developing the land at Quincy Heights, Marble Lake and Lake Diane. Del served on the Board of Directors for the Camden Development Corporation and the Camden Telephone Company. He was a member of the Montgomery American Legion and the Elks and Moose lodges. Outside of his work and family, Del enjoyed traveling. His journeys took him to Iceland, the Amazon, Costa Rica, Europe, Mexico and Africa. He also enjoyed local travels, specifically on a Motor-Sailor through the Inland Coastal Waterways and a boat cruise through the Great Lakes from Niagara Falls to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Del was very proud of the fact that he had crossed the International Dateline 25 times as a sailor and later in his travels. On Dec. 21, 1944, he married Jean Stewart, and she survives in Camden. Also surviving are his three children, Ned (Lisa) White of North Adams, Terri Friedlund (Dave Windle) of Hillsdale and Susan (Rodney) Cortright of Jonesville; special friend Evelyn Cook of Camden; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Mary Miller, Maxine Snyder, Helen Hernandez and Frances Percy; one grandson; and one great-grandson. Memorial services will be held Sunday, June 6, at 2 p.m., at the George White Funeral Home in Reading, with Pastor Don Lee officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from noon until time of service. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hillsdale County.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dennis Hopper, who brought the counterculture to Hollywood with "Easy Rider" and led a career marked by successes, failures and comebacks, has died at age 74.

Dennis L. "Butch" Kramer Muir Formerly of Fowler, died June 3, 2010, at the age of 56. Born on June 23, 1953, in Carson City, the son of Eldred and Bernadine (Smith) Kramer. Butch was employed by the Clinton County Road Commission, was a member of the Fowler Conservation Club, and the V.F.W. Men's Auxiliary. He married Sandy Ward, on May 1, 2004, and she survives him. Also surviving are his daughter, Jenna Kramer, sons, Troy (Beth) Kramer, Brent (Shiloh) Kramer, stepdaughters, Charmaine Taylor, and Jennifer (Chris Brown) Peiffer, stepsons, Thad Peiffer, and Jeremie Peiffer, grandchildren, Shaun Kramer, Chase Kramer, Isaac Kramer, Thomas Peiffer, Mark Kramer, Jr., Dante Kramer, Abygayle Brown, and Carter Dennis Brown, brothers, Mark (Deb) Kramer, Ed (Deb) Kramer and Luke Kramer. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Ann Smith. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 7, 2010, at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fowler, with Fr. Dennis Howard presiding. Burial will follow at Most Holy Trinity Cemetery. Gary Lee Lawson, 63, of Shipshewana, Ind., died June 2, 2010 at his home following an extended illness. He was born April 10 1947, in Garrett, Ky., the son of Milford Lee and Mildred (Howard)Larson. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had lived in Shipshewana, Ind. for eight years, coming from White Pigeon. On July 7, 1976, he married Olga Helen Cruz in Charleston, W.Va. He worked in recreational vehicle manufacturng, retiring from Coachman Industries of Middlebury, Ind., after 24 years. He was a musician, drumer and lead singer for the bands Gary Lee and the Sis O Clock News, Good and Plenty, and Wooden Nickel. The bands played locally at the Sturgis Bowl, the Sturgis Eagles lodge and the Sturgis Moose lodge. He was a member of the Baptist church. Surviving are his wife, Olga H. Lawson of Shipshewana; three daughters, Erica Lynn Lawson of South Bend, Ind., Melody Charmaine and Patricia K. (Rick)Young, both of White Pigeon; eight grandchildren; a sister, Herma; and a brother, Connie. He was preceded in death by his parents and 11 brother and sisters. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Services are at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sam’s Place, 60495 Lutz Road, Three Rivers. Arrangements were handled by the Farrand Funeral Home of White Pigeon. Goldie (Judy) Renz Hart Died on May 31, 2010 at the age of 91 at La Vida Llena Retirement Community in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Hart, three granddaughters and three great granddaughters, all of Albuquerque. She is also survived by two sisters, Irene Ritch of Green Valley, Arizona; Doris Johnson of Grand Junction, Colorado, and several nieces and nephews. Judy was born on the Renz family farm in East Lansing, Michigan as the oldest of five children, on September 18, 1918 to William J. and Pearl M. Renz. She majored in English and Journalism at Michigan State University, where she met her husband, John (Jack) Sommers Hart. They married and moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1940 and were together until his passing on February 2, 2008. She and Jack lived in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan for many years, and then in Middletown, New Jersey until Jack's retirement. Thereafter, they split their time between Carlsbad, California and Lovells, Michigan at their cabin on Shupac Lake. A devoted wife and mother Judy enjoyed her role of homemaker. She volunteered for several organizations in the Detroit area over the years, including the Southern Oakland Girl Scout Council; Jr. Group Goodwill, and AFS Student Exchange Program. She and Jack were active members of the Lovells Historical Society and Hook and Trigger clubs. She loved doing needlework, knitting, sewing, gardening, playing bridge, golfing, being at the cabin and spending time with her many friends. She will be missed. Herman Thompson Jr., 80, of Sturgis, passed away Friday evening, May 28, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. He was born May 21, 1930, a son of the late Herman and Pearl (Washburn) Thompson. Herman’s early life was lived in Burr Oak, where he graduated from Burr Oak High School. He had resided for several years in Florida and returned to Sturgis in 1988. Following several years of dedicated employment, he retired from Dorr Products in Burr Oak. He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and had a true appreciation for classic automobiles. Herman is survived by three granddaughters, Amanda Sigler of Sturgis, Jessica Meister of Three Rivers and Jennifer Sigler of Vicksburg; three grandsons, Flynn Thompson, Quinn Thompson and Colin Sigler, all of Sturgis; five great-grandchildren, Zoe, Keagan, Ella, Shawn and Willow; a sister, Ila “Pat” McNeil of Nottawa; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Delores Sigler and her husband, Kendall Sigler; a son, Richard Thompson; a grandson, William Sigler; and a sister, Joan Washburn. Kay was a graduate of Union City High School in 1941. She lived in Union City until her marriage to Charles F. (Frank) Harper, the love of her life, on Dec. 14, 1941. Frank and Kay renewed their marriage vows on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991. Kay was a member of the Burlington Church of God. She loved her church family and she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Frank Harper, daughters Judith Allen of Bronson, Fla., Janice (Ivan) Boynton of Coldwater and Pennie (Ken) Slauson of Union City, sister Thelma Lou (Jack) Dawe of Constantine, 15 grandchild, 28 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Stewart and Susie Danberry, brother Kenneth Irwin Danberry, grandson Jerry C. Jones, step granddaughter Lonna Boynton and great grandson Jason Frary. Kristi Lynn Tuin, age 57, of Grand Haven, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at home.   She was born to Charles and Bernice (VandenBerg) Pellegrom on May 15, 1953 in Grand Haven.  Kristi graduated from Grand Haven High School and married Steve Tuin in Grand Haven on August 10, 1974. She worked at Eagle Ottawa for 13 years before she went to Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, where she worked for 18 years prior to retiring.  Kristi was a member of Second Reformed Church. She enjoyed collecting antiques, boating, and spending time with her family. As a child, she enjoyed camping and fishing, and after having children of her own, she liked traveling with them-especially on cruises and to Gulf Shores, AL. Kristi was always thinking of others and is remembered as generous and loving toward everyone.   She is survived by her husband, Steve; daughter, Kim Tuin; and son, Matthew (Jessica) Tuin, all of Grand Haven; mother, Bernice Pellegrom; parents-in-law, John (Delores) Tuin of Spring Lake; sister, Robyn Cook of Berrien Springs; brother, Greg (Jackie) Pellegrom of Stevens Point, WI; sisters-in-law, Jana (Doug) Vandermey of Grand Haven and Gayle Fergeson of AZ; as well as several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. On April 12, 1947, She married Earl T. Fenno in Angola, Ind. He preceded her in death Jan. 9, 2005. Mrs. Fenno worked in retail for many years before earning her registered nurse certification. She worked at the Community Health Center of Branch County for 10 years, retiring in 1990. Jean was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Coldwater, where she belonged to the St. Mary’s Guild and the Domino Club. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting and had made many prayer shawls with the church ministry. Jean also enjoyed gardening. Jean is survived by her daughters, Phylis Hyland of Sturgis, Penny and Ed Geishert Jr. of Quincy and Pam Fenno of Kalamazoo; her grandchildren ,Paul (Darlene) Geishert of Snellville, Ga., Torey (Darin) Wolfcale of Coldwater and Michael Geishert of Quincy; her great grandchildren Zachery, Heaven and Xavier Geishert, Bailey Blair, and Kurt, Micha and Olivia Geishert; and special friend Jim “Fielder” Martin of Coldwater. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Schultz. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday  at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Coldwater, with Fr. Delbert Eugene White, 84, of Camden and Goodland, Fla., passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at home under the loving care of his family. Born Aug. 31, 1925, in Montgomery, he was the son of Ray and Hazel (Thorne) White and graduated from Montgomery High School in 1943. Del was a medic in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific on the USS Barnes aircraft carrier from 1943-45. He was co-owner and operator of the Montgomery Egg Co.,  for 25 years and also owned and operated Del’s Mobile Homes and The Bluffs. He was instrumental in developing the land at Quincy Heights, Marble Lake and Lake Diane. Del served on the board of directors for the Camden Development Corporation and the Camden Telephone Company. He was a member of the Montgomery American Legion and the Elks and Moose Lodges. Outside of his work and family, Del enjoyed traveling. His journeys took him to Iceland, the Amazon, Costa Rica, Europe, Mexico and Africa. He also enjoyed local travels, specifically on a Motor-Sailor through the Inland Coastal Waterways and a boat cruise through the Great Lakes from Niagara Falls to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Del was very proud of the fact that he had crossed the International Dateline 25 times as a sailor and later in his travels. On Dec. 21, 1944, he married Jean Stewart and she survives in Camden. Also surviving: three children, Ned (Lisa) White of North Adams; Terri Friedlund (Dave Windle)  Hillsdale and Susan (Rodney) Cortright of Jonesville; special friend, Evelyn Cook of Camden; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters (Mary Miller, Maxine Snyder, Helen Hernandez and Frances Percy), one grandson and one great-grandson. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday  at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Don Lee officiating. Visitation is scheduled from noon until time of service Sunday. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hillsdale County.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen (Steve) Dewey and Susan (Alan) Cook all of North Adams; one daughter-in-law, Marcia Bumpus of North Adams; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Shum of Iowa; one brother, Charles (Peggy) Walters of Texas and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bumpus was a lifelong resident of North Adams and enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with her family. She was a member of the North Adams United Methodist Church, the North Adams UMW and the Adams Grange. At her request cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mrs. Martha L. Surviving besides his wife Sue are three daughters, Brandy Kesler-Stebelton, Jane Cole and Katie Rearick; four sons, Jeremiah (Kala) Stebelton, Timothy Spence, Gabriel Edgar and Jeremy (DeLinda) Lamontaine; four brothers, Arthur (Marsha) Stebelton, Cedric Stebelton Jr., John (Cathy) Stebelton and Randy (Paula) Stebelton; seven grandchildren, Kira Stebelton, Alijah Rearick, Alicen Bradley, Caleb and Matthew Shrontz, Taylor Heckman and Kaleb Anderson. He was a member of the Montpelier Eagles, Montpelier Moose Lodge and the Pioneer American Legion. Walter O. Fitzcharles was born on Feb. 24, 1944, in Edgerton, Ohio, the son of Alvin Estel and Gertrude Mae (Wiles) Fitzcharles. He married Patricia A. Mason on Oct. 13, 1962, in Cooney, Ohio, and she survives. He is survived by four sons, Todd (Joni) Fitzcharles, of Mount Airy, N.C., Terry (Mary Jane) Fitzcharles, of Bryan, Ohio, Tim (Pam) Fitzcharles and Tracy (Dawn) Fitzcharles, both of Edgerton, and one daughter, Teresa (Andy) Stickney, of Montpelier, Ohio. Also surviving are one brother, Vaughn Fitzcharles, of Edgerton, and 14 grandchildren, Nathan (Michelle) and Ashley McCandless; Megan Eicher; Jason, Chelsey, Samantha, Cassie, Jeremy Dayne and Kole Fitzcharles; Damion Heinze; Tanner Stickney; Chandler Nester; and Kennedy Stuut; and three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Koleton McCandless and Ainsleigh Papenbrock. Richard D. Brainerd Naples, Florida Age 85, passed away peacefully on May 18th, 2010 with his family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Marjorie, son Richard Ladd (Jeanette) Brainerd, and twin daughters Marsha (Charles) Miller, and Martha (Richard) Klomparens and their children. As a young man Dick proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Infantry on the shores of Anzio. After living many years in Bath, Michigan and working for Oldsmobile, Richard and Marjorie retired spending time during the summer on Lake Charlevoix fishing and golfing and wintering in Naples Florida. For the past ten years Dick resided exclusively in Naples, Florida where he enjoyed year round golfing and was a member of the Mayflower United Church of Christ Congregation. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him and will always be remembered for his humor, strength, and caring love.

Robert “Babe” Callahan, age 93, of Adrian died Monday, May 31, 2010, at Provincial House.  He was born Dec. 2, 1916, in Adrian to Joseph and Katherine (Mauer) Callahan. He graduated from St. Joseph High School. On Sept. 20, 1944, he married Mary Jane Erhart at St. Joseph Catholic Church and she preceded him in death on March 3, 2007. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945, during WWII, in Alaska and Germany. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.  He was a 65-year lifetime member of the William G. Stark Post #97 of the American Legion. Bob had been employed by the New York Central Railroad for 20 years, Dunmore Funeral Home for 25 years and the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, for three years. He had renovated many historical homes in Adrian.   For  many years Bob celebrated the Christmas season as a well-known Santa Claus to many Adrian children. Bob is survived by a sister-in-law, Frances Callahan of Adrian. In addition to his wife, Mary Jane, he was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, six brothers, and a daughter, Sheila Callahan. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered Friday, June 4, 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father David Hudgins as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery with full graveside military rites conducted by the V.F.W. Annis-Fint Post #1584. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian where a Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also take place on Friday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Roma M. Gray of Cadillac, formerly of Tecumseh, died May 23, 2010, at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. She was born Aug. 11, 1916, in Wolf Creek, Mich., to Glenn and Vera (Myers) Driscoll. She graduated from Adrian High School and moved to Tecumseh where she had lived until October 2009, when she moved to Cadillac to reside with her son. Roma will be remembered for her love of music. She shared her piano playing skills with many. For 20 years, she was the weekly pianist at the Tecumseh Rotary Club meetings and became an honorary member of the club. She and her sister provided music weekly for the residents at Herrick Manor and Tecumseh Place. They were awarded the Musgrove Evans Award in 2001 in recognition of their leadership and volunteerism in their community. A very special event in Roma’s life was the wedding of her only granddaughter, Mindy Gray. At the age of 90, she provided her joyful music at the wedding reception to the delight of all attending. While in Cadillac, she shared her musical talents at Day Break Adult Daycare two days a week. Mrs. Gray is survived by her son, Thomas G. Gray of Cadillac; granddaughter, Mindy (nee Gray) (Thomas) Cooper of Traverse City; and sister, Ruth (nee) Driscoll Crosby of Tecumseh. Also surviving her are five nieces and nephews, six great-nieces and nephews and 11 great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Waters, and her second husband, Frank Gray. She was a member of the United Methodist Church (605 Bishop Reed Drive) of Tecumseh where there will be a celebration of her life held at 1 p.m. on June 6, 2010. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Tecumseh Music Program. Burial will take place at Brookside Cemetery in Tecumseh. Arrangements were made by the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac.

Susan Alice Steffey, age 71, of Mendon, died Friday May 28, 2010, at her home.   She was born Aug. 1, 1938, in Grosse Pointe, a daughter of Ivan and Marjorie (Gooch) Misener. She graduated from Pontiac High School in 1956.   On Sept. 11, 1959, she  married Herbert Steffey in Pontiac. They continued to reside in suburban Detroit and retired to Mendon in 1992. Susan was a homemaker, and enjoyed canning items from her garden, along with cooking, baking and crocheting. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and camping, and life along the river. She attended the Leonidas Baptist Church. Susan is survived by her husband, Herbert; a daughter, Debra (Dale) Baker of Mendon; a son, Herbert (Carol) Steffey Jr. of Millersburg, Ohio; four grandchildren, Alicia Baker, Kari Baker, Brian Baker and Jeff Welch; three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Michael and Emily (along with soon expected, Autumn); two sisters, Sally Cipher of Oregon and Polly Hight of Walled Lake; two brothers, Tom Misener of Oregon and Mike Misener of California; a step-brother, Jon Rives of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her stepfather, Earl Rives. The family will receive friends from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Pastor David Stevens of the Leonidas Baptist Church officiating.  Cremation will follow services.
