Mary M. (Hefty) Blood

Mary M. (Hefty) Blood Lansing Mary Marcia Blood, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and retired Associate Director of the Greater Lansing Convention and Visitors Bureau died after a long illness on Tuesday June 8, 2010 at Sparrow Hospital. Mrs. Blood was 77 (but would only admit to 26). Mrs. Blood was born in St. Johns, MI, graduated from Lansing Eastern High School in 1951 and spent her entire adult life as a Lansing resident. She worked briefly at the former Capitol Park and Jack Tar Hotels as a front desk manager before joining the Lansing Convention Bureau in 1967. During her 35 years at the Bureau, Mrs. Blood was instrumental in bringing a number of impressive conventions to Lansing. She was a successful tourism promoter for the City of Lansing and as a result she received many awards during her career. Most notably was a proclamation signed by then Governor James Blanchard recognizing her efforts in bringing the Women's International Bowling Tournament to the community; an event which brought in hundreds of millions of dollars to the Lansing area. Mrs. Blood was well connected and highly influential throughout the community. She had an energetic personality. These qualities combined to make her one of the best fundraisers the Lansing area has ever seen. She was responsible for spearheading many successful fund raising events, including Silver Bells in the City, The Riverfest Lighted Float Parade, and The Festival of Trees. However her signature event was The Annual Holiday Open House. The Holiday Open House was an event which was attended by hundreds of prominent business and community leaders including many high ranking public officials; for many years it was held at the Lansing Center on the first Friday in December. She also led countless other successful endeavors including raising funds for the Michigan Historical Museum, the Sparrow Hospital renovation, and the banners, wreaths and Christmas lights that decorate downtown Lansing during the holiday season and beyond. In 1996 Mrs. Blood raised $96 thousand dollars for the Grand Opening of Oldsmobile Park, home of the Lansing Lugnuts. Later that year, she was honored by City Officials at a ceremony in Oldsmobile Park during a Lugnuts game. Mrs. Blood was a true visionary. She had a creative mind, a good business sense, and a love for Lansing. She always had her sights set on a new project or a new event that would enhance the community -- she had a vision and she made things happen. Mrs. Blood enjoyed organizing family parties where her signature dish of chicken with homemade noodles was often served. After dessert, the gatherings would typically include a pinochle or euchre tournament. She loved to play cards and she would usually win. She also loved watching her grandchildren perform and compete. Basketball and dance were her favorite. She rarely missed an occasion, often attending multiple events in different cities in a single day. She will be deeply missed by her family for her unwavering devotion, loving spirit and unyielding support. Mary Blood is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Ron; daughter Pam Holland (Mike) of Novi, 3- sons Dan Parks (Denise) of Lake Odessa, Dennis Parks (Brenda) of Niles, and Doug Parks(Cathy) of Eaton Rapids; 12 grandchildren - Jenny Larner (Jami), Meghan Joseph (Andy), Ashton Parks, Marybeth Miles, Nathan Parks, Jordan Parks, Mahrley Marcia Parks, Austin Parks, David Parks, Joseph Parks, Michael Holland and Sam Holland; 3 great grandchildren - Makayla, Nevaeh and Emerson Larner; step grandchildren- Deidre, Alyssa, Coby and Camille; sister Bev Barnum of Holt; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her mother Inez Alvada (Purvis) Hefty, her father Harry Hefty (Ceola), brother Bob Hefty and sister Helen Ging. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, June 15, 12:00 noon, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. John Byers as celebrant.
