Carol Yvonne Sawdy Haslett Carol Yvonne Sawdy passed away at her home in Haslett, Michigan on June 20, 2010 at the age of 82. Born December 4, 1927 to Porter and Irene (Glendenning) Sherman. She was preceeded in death by her parents, 9 of her 12 siblings, and her son, Larry Sawdy. David “Snake” DeGroot, 54, of Monroe and formerly of Adrian, died Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.  Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Allore Chapel-Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 203 E. Elm Ave., Monroe, where funeral services will be at noon Monday. Burial will take place in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park, Adrian. Born Oct. 10, 1955, in Adrian, David was the son of Robert and Katherine (Calkins) DeGroot. He married Janet Lindsay on Aug. 19, 1995. David worked construction for many years through the Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Union Local #1. In addition to his wife Janet of Monroe and parents Robert and Katherine of Adrian, David is survived by five daughters, Rebecca Hunter of Temperance, Kaycee Raines of Toledo, Kelly (Kyle) Kidder of Jupiter, Florida, Jade Cutshall of Tennessee and Jessica Souviron of Tennessee; a brother, Mike (Sharon) DeGroot of Britton; and seven grandchildren: Audre Lynn Hunter, Conner Witfoth, Brooke Witfoth, Sage Raines, Nolan Leo Kidder, Makenzi Foolks and Ashton Cutshall. Gene V. Smith, 80, of Coldwater, passed away on Friday, June 25, 2010, at Sturgis Hospital surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 28, 2010, at Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson from 2- 8 p.m. Gene was born on April 4, 1930 in Howe, Ind., to Fred and Zelda (Wilber) Smith , Jr. He attended Hickory Corners School and married his wife of 60 years, Ida Milliman, on March 18, 1950 in Coldwater. He has been a resident of Branch county since 1957, moving from Sturgis. Gene was self employed, hauling milk for the Pet Milk Company in Angola, Ind., for 26 years, retiring in 1990. Following his retirement he worked in construction with the local Amish and at the Wal-Mart Garden Center in Coldwater. He also continued to run his auctioneering service, which he very much enjoyed. Gene’s family was the most important thing in his life. He enjoyed going on family trips, camping and playing cards. He loved people and will be missed by all who knew him. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Ida Smith; sons, Larry (Natalie) Smith and Earl (Cathy) Smith, both of Coldwater, Scottie (Melissa) Smith of Bronson; daughters, Arlene (Bob) Weddle of Bronson and Connie (Chuck) Anthony of Coldwater; brother Fred (Charlene) Smith Jr. of Bronson; sisters, Gela Matthews and Winifred Wells, both of Florida and Minnie May Nolen of Sturgis; 19 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Jack, at the age of one; brother, Norval Smith; and sister, Catherine Akins. Iola Y. Graves, age 78, of Britton went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at home. She was born Oct. 20, 1931, in Royal Oak, Mich., the daughter of Roy and Sarah (Ryckman) Edmonds. She was married to Howard Yatzek on May 17, 1952, in Livonia, Mich. She later married Mark Graves on Feb. 26, 1983, in Farmington Hills, Mich., and he survives. Iola was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Britton where her passion was learning and teaching the bible and Sunday School. Iola loved spending time with her family and never missed a grandchild’s sporting event. She was employed as Secretary and Personal Assistant to the Regional Manager at State Farm Insurance in Novi, retiring in 1995. In addition to her husband, Mark, Iola is survived by three sons, Butch (Joyce) Yatzek of Clayton, Jim (Deb) Yatzek of Morenci and Roger (Heidi) Yatzek of Palmyra; two brothers, Ted Edmonds of Livonia and Charles (Kay) Edmonds of Clinton; two sisters, Geraldine Launstein of South Carolina and Rosemary (Wade) Humphrey of Farmington Hills; seven grandchildren, Scott (Stacy) Yatzek, Rachel (Kevin) Grayer, Derrick (Tiffany) Yatzek, Joel (Melissa) Yatzek, Tim (Lindsay) Yatzek, Daniel (Callie) Yatzek and Emilie (Jamie) Beach; seven great-grandchildren, Sidny, Sedric, Rylee, Noah, Jalen, Emelia and Gavin. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bob, Don and Keith Edmonds; and her twin sister, Ila Mae Edmonds. Iola was loved by all of her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. He was an avid race fan and supporter of M-40 Speedway, a fisherman and a hunter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirely Salters; her five children, Jonathan (Yuko) Waxweather, Lyn Kiper of Three Rivers, Kim Howard, Tina (Michael) Woolsey of Dowagiac and Jason (Jess) Pompeteer of Muncie, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his extended family from Betty Best, a son, Timothy D. Surviving are her husband of 12 years, Collin Brown; children, Sara Palmer and Nathan Palmer; mother, Joan Lotridge; mother-in-law, Naomi Brown; brother, James Lotridge; sisters, Janet (Ronald) Shuster, Joyce Lotridge; brother-in-law Kevin (Karen) Brown; sister-in-law, Angela (Samuel) Schillace; nephew and niece, Ryan (Alison) Shuster, Jessica Shuster; also survived by one uncle, three aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Jeanne was preceded in death by her father, James Lotridge and father-in-law, H. Towle Brown. Jeanne was a 1982 graduate of Owosso High School and a 1986 graduate of MSU. She was a general manager for Marriot, and most recently worked for the State of MI, Department of Human Services. She was very active at the South Lansing Christian Church where she taught Sunday school, and was a member of the choir. She loved music, camping, flowers, decorating for all the holidays, especially Christmas, but most of all she loved her family. Lillie M. Ayers, age 93, of Adrian passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. Lillie was born Sept. 24, 1916, to Paul Elijah and Nellie (Baty) Lay in Atwood, Ala. She married J. Hubert Chamblee on May 9, 1934, in Ala. He preceded her in death Dec. 22, 1943. She later married Elmer Ayers on July 16, 1948. He died Jan. 30, 1983. Lillie was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, two grandsons and two daughters.   Survivors include a daughter, Jean Humphries of Adrian; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Gordon of Tennessee; and her nieces and caregivers, Mary Wiley, Cindy Maniscalco and Linda File. Lillie was a seamstress at Maurice’s for 22 years. In her retirement, she enjoyed doing alterations from her home. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Adrian. The funeral service for Lillie will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Wagley Funeral Home with Pastor Darrell Hyder officiating. Burial will follow at Palmyra Cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday from noon until the service. Condolences may be sent to www.wagleyfuneralhome.com. Maynard Marchand, age 83, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Sturgis Hospital following a short illness. He was born Nov. 16, 1926, in LaGrange, Ind., a son of the late Charley and Retha (Fleck) Marchand. On July 14, 1947, he married Martha Della Miller in Angola, Ind. She preceded him in death June 29, 1996. Maynard had been a resident of Sturgis most of his life, living his earlier years in LaGrange. He had been employed by the Harter Corporation in Sturgis for 46 years before retiring and enjoyed fishing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Surviving are two sons, Michael (Diane) Marchand of Sturgis and Robert (Larisa) Marchand of Sterling Heights; a daughter, Pamela (Bud) Conley of Finley; five grandchildren, Kenneth, Casey, Shaun, Michael and Marc Marchand; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five brothers; and three sisters. The family will receive friends and relatives from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Hackman Family Funeral Home Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Services celebrating the life of Maynard Marchand will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. George Cleverley officiating. Interment and graveside services will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, with full military honors conferred by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Capt. John J. Kelley V.F.W. Post #1355. Brett P. Netke Aug. 23, 1967 — June 20, 2010 Brett P. Netke, 42, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2010, at Summit, Wisconsin from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident. He was born Aug. 23, 1967, in Livonia, to Edward Netke and Jane Martini. He was married April 10, 1996, to Darlene Barnes and she survives.   Brett was a Global Procurement Director for Johnson Controls in Milwaukee. He was a graduate of Northville High School in 1985 and a graduate of Michigan State University in 1990. Brett loved all sports. He ran cross country and track for M.S.U. Brett enjoyed golfing and started bicycling after he injured himself running.   Surviving besides his wife, Darlene, are three children, Tyler, age 7, Alyssa, age 5 and Gabrielle, age 3; his father and stepmother, Edward (Sharon) Netke of Northville; mother and stepfather, Jane (Sheldon) Bingham of North Ft. Myers, Florida; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wes (Linda) Barnes of Hillsdale; sister, Rachel (Nate) Bishop of Holland, Mich.; sister-in-law, Jene (John) Brehm of Waldron; brother-in-law, Wesley Barnes Jr. of Reading; aunt, Barb Netke of Waterford; and a niece, Katlyn Brehm.   Funeral services for Brett Netke will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 25 at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Fr. Vernon J. “Bud” Cook, 85, of Hillsdale passed away Friday, June 18, 2010, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facilty in Coldwater. He was born March 27, 1925, in Spring Arbor to LaVerne and La Vada (Grover) Cook. He was married Oct. 25, 1947 to Mattie Applegate and she preceded him in death Oct. 18, 2007. Vernon was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. He retired in 1987 from Hillsdale Tool and was a former Captain of the Hillsdale Police Auxiliary. Surviving are four daughters, Nancy (Wayne) Hutchins, Susan (Jeffrey) Kuhn, Tonya Cook, and Anne (Doug) Cook Preston all of Hillsdale; a son, V. Michael (Marcia) Cook of Rockford; two sisters, Florence Strong of Hillsdale and Elma Zimmerman of Arizona; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Besides his wife Mattie, Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tom; five sisters, Mary Eichler, Mabel Munsel, Margaret Butcher, Dorothy Smith and Inez Skalniak and a grandson, Sean Hutchins. Olive Dorthea Gushwa, age 91, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village. She was born in Three Rivers, on July 31, 1918, a daughter of the late Edward Hugh and Elmira (Parsons) Baker. Olive had been a resident of Sturgis and the Three Rivers area all of her life. She graduated from Three Rivers High School with the class of 1936 and was a good athlete excelling in all sports. On March 4, 1942, in Bryon, Ohio, she married Fredric L. Gushwa. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1968. She was a homemaker and a beautician working at Cramer’s Beauty Shop in Three Rivers. She then worked and retired from the Kirsch Company in Sturgis after many years of service. Olive was a member of the Lima United Methodist Church, Mintdale Women’s Club, and enjoyed being outdoors, traveling, and spending time with her family. Surviving are two sons, James (Kristine) Gushwa of Jones, and Gary (Gail) Gushwa of Sturgis; six grandchildren, Fred Gushwa of Sturgis, Heidi Sorkoram of Kalamazoo, Karen Marie (David) Yearick of Raleigh, N.C., David Gushwa, Stacie (Cary) Cookson, and Steven (Holly) Gushwa all of Sturgis; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Ruth Schug and Arlene Nole; and two daughters-in-law, Mary Gushwa and Janet Gushwa. Patricia J. Knisely, 73, of Constantine, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Three Rivers. She was born Dec. 11, 1936, in Chicago, a daughter of Samuel and Ann (Branch) Gottlieb. Pat graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1955.  On Nov. 6, 1955, she married David Knisely in Constantine. Pat worked in food service at Constantine Public Schools from 1984 until 1998. She had previously worked at the Drake Casket Company. Pat enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casinos to play the slot machines. Pat also loved to travel, especially vacationing at Drummond Island.  Pat  liked flower gardening, fishing, cooking and crochet. She was a member of the “Gutter Strutters” bowling team. Surviving Pat are her husband, David Knisely of Constantine; daughter, Kimberly (Tim) Hesketh of Middlebury, Ind.; sons, Keith (Jane) Knisely of Union, and Bill (Susan) Knisely of Niles; eight grandchildren Christopher, Jonathon, Caty, Andy, David, and Tyler Knisely, Ashley Cooper  and Bailey Lang; and sister-in-law Janet (Bernie) Heign, Constantine.  She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Shirley Bonebright. Relatives and friends will be received 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine. Preston Edward Jones, 64, of Constantine, died June 21, 2010, at his home following an extended illness. He was born Feb. 22, 1946, in Amelia County, Va., the son of William D. and Lula W. (Thompson) Jones. On June 19, 1975, he married Nancy Black in White Pigeon. He had been a Constantine resident since 1975 and in his early life worked in construction. He was an auto mechanic most of his life. He was the past president of the Lions Club; a volunteer for the Constantine Schools and enjoyed taking tickets for football and basketball games. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Jones of Constantine; a sister, Carrie Rossi of Peoria, Ariz.; children, Daina (Donald) Spisak of Hendersonville, Tenn., Douglas (Melissa) Jones, of Elkhart, Ind., Shon (Lydia) Jones of Elkhart, Wendy (Ken) Ludwig of Three Rivers, Shannon (Brian) Schwart of Kalamazoo, and Angela Jones of Constantine; 17 grandchildren, Britanie, Skylar, Blake, Justin, Spencer, Avery, Andru, Christopher, Isaiah, Jack, Katherine, Riley, Brady, Nicholas, Ayden, McKenna, and Addison. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rose Marie Powell. Relatives and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at he Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon, where services are at 11 .m. Robert Gaines Wilbar, age 66, of Adrian, formerly of Tecumseh, died Thursday, June 24, 2010 in Bixby Medical Center, Adrian. He was born on May 21, 1944, in Lake City, Tenn., the son of William and Gladys (Webb) Wilbar. He married Judy Pinter on April 6, 1968, in Tecumseh. Bob came to the Tecumseh area in 1951 from Lake City, Tenn. He was an avid runner on the track team for Tecumseh High School, attaining many medals while there. He was a member of the Berean Baptist Church, Adrian, was very dedicated to Christian Education, and enjoyed singing. Bob was a Veteran of the United States Army, then worked as a custodian for the Tecumseh Public Schools for more than 20 years and was a very successful salesperson for West Bend Cookware. He was a loving father who enjoyed bragging about his family, was a very kind and gentle man and will be missed by his family and all those who knew him. He is survived by one son, William (Susan) Wilbar of Adrian; two daughters, Jeannine (Frank) LaVoy of Tecumseh and Laura (Mark) Gilbert of Valparaiso, Ind.; one brother, James (Maria) Wilbar of Fullerton, Calif.; two sisters, Barbara (Melvin) Scheffler of Clinton, Mich., Liza Phairow of Shoreline, Wash.; and four grandchildren, Zach, Kendra, Alexis and Andrew. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice Wilbar-Machan and Julie Parrish. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 27, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of the Handler Funeral Homes, where funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 28. Pastor Doug Rogers of Berean Baptist Church, Adrian, will officiate. Visitation will also be at the funeral home from 1 p.m. on Monday until the time of services. Burial will follow in Lenawee Hills Memorial Gardens, Tecumseh, under the auspices of the American Legion Post #34, Tecumseh. Memorial contributions may be made to Reformers Unanimous. Robert John Rogers Lansing Age 64, passed away Wednesday, June 23, 2010. Bob left this world a better place by being here. He was kind, generous and a gentleman. Bob was a lifelong resident of Lansing, born March 21, 1946, a graduate of Monsignor O'Rafferty High School and Michigan State University. He retired from the State of Michigan, Dept. of Management and Budget-Site Section. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Rogers and mother, Barbara Bohnet Rogers. Ruth "Irene" Bassham DeWitt Age 90, passed away June 24, 2010. She was born March 15, 1920 in Flint, MI the daughter of Charles and Arlie (Ward) O'Dell. Irene was preceded in death by her husbands, John C. Bassham and Cosmo D. Albani; brothers, Charles and Claude O'Dell; sister, Joy O'Dell; and grandson, Michael Thrasher. Theresa M. Tate, 90, of Coldwater, passed away on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at the Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. with the Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.   Theresa was born in Philadelphia, on Dec. 24, 1919, to Andrew Joseph and Catherine Marie (Onorato) Riviello. She graduated from Kensington High School and Banks Business School, both in Philadelphia. Theresa married Martin Joseph Tate, Sr. on April 27, 1946 in Philadelphia. He preceded her in death on July 3, 1987. She had worked for Michigan Gas Utilities in customer service for many years, retiring in 1984. Theresa was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church, where she supported many special projects within the church and was a side door greeter for Saturday night mass. After retirement from Michigan Gas, Theresa volunteered for the Maple Lawn Auxiliary, the Food Pantry, Hoff’s Vegetable Market, the Young at Heart Group and the Coldwater Area Senior Citizens. Theresa is survived by three sons, Martin (Debbie) Tate, Jr. of Coldwater, Charles (Leslie) Tate of Bridgman and Andrew (Gloria) Tate of Sturgis, seven grandchildren, seven great-granddaughters and a brother, Thomas Riviello, of Philadelphia. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gabriel and sister Domonica. William “Bill” Schuch, age 91, of Adrian passed away Friday, June 25, 2010, at his home under the loving care of his family. Bill was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Morenci, the son of Clarence and Louise (Marzolf) Schuch. During World War II, he served in the Army’s 888th Ordinance Division and was stationed in the CBI Theatre.   On Dec. 4, 1945, Bill married Gertrude E. Gilbert in Seward, Ohio. Gertrude, his wife of over 64 years survives.   Bill worked at Stubnitz Greene in Adrian for 37 years, retiring in 1979. Bill and Gertrude were well known in the community for their homemade peanut brittle, which they started making and selling in 1966. Bill was a faithful member of Jasper Bible Church. In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by three children: Calvin Schuch of Jackson; Gary (Shelly) Schuch of Brooklyn; and Susan (Mark) Vanderpool of Adrian; four grandchildren: Lisa (Kevin) Frey, Christopher Vanderpool, Gabriel (Rowena) Schuch and Nathan (Jennifer) Schuch; four great grandchildren: Gavin, Austin, Taylor and Jordyn; two sisters and one brother. He was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. The funeral service for Bill will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Jasper Bible Church with Rev. Bruce Jewett officiating. Burial will follow at Hunt Cemetery with military honors conducted by the VFW Annis Fint Post #1584. Visitation will be held at Wagley Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Condolences may be sent to www.wagleyfuneralhome.com.
