Arlene J. Gerardy (nee Cole ), age 74, a resident of Macomb Township and formerly of Madison Heights, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Shelby Nursing Center. She was born September 10, 1935, in Detroit, Mich. to the late George and Anna Cole. She lived in Madison Heights for over 47 years, was very active at St. Dennis Catholic Church helping out with the funeral luncheons and the blood drives. She enjoyed traveling to her up north home in the UP of Michigan. Beloved wife of the late Louis. Loving mother of Paul (Kristine) Gerardy and Christopher (Linda) Gerardy. Proud grandmother of Kaitlin, Nicole, Michael, and Christopher. Dear sister of Norbert (Louise) Cole and Connie Sini. Visitation at the Wm. Christopher Alexander Ogryski. On January 28, 2010, the good Lord called his faithful servant Christopher Alexander Ogryski home. Chris was born on March 14, 1975, in Royal Oak. He was the loving son of Cathy and Alan Ogryski of Sterling Heights. Chris married the love of his life Jill Anne Kubacki on the fourth of July 1998 at St. John the Evangelist Church of Ubly. The magical love the two of them shared, blessed them with two beautiful daughters. Kylie Virginia Ogryski was born on April 7, 2001, and Hope Anne Ogryski was born on September 29, 2009. Chris was an amazing and gifted writer. He worked for the Huron County Press since 2002, as a sports reporter, a sports editor, and then became the news editor. Chris' column "Understanding Ogryski" brought many laughs to his many readers in Huron County and beyond. He loved all levels of sports, movies and TV shows, playing euchre with Uncle Jim, talking to his best friend Paul, and mostly enjoying a quiet evening at home with his girls. Chris is survived by his wife, Jill and two daughters, Kylie and Hope of Ubly; his parents, Cathy and Alan Ogryski of Sterling Heights; his sister and husband, Heather and Andrew Brockhaus of Macomb and their two children Sarah and Michael; his in-laws, Martin and Luci Kubacki of Ubly; his brother in-law and wife, Dan and Jenn Kubacki of Canton, and their two children Zachary and Lauren; along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Evelyn and Mike Ogryski and Alexander and Virginia Galek and Jill's grandparents, Cass and Virginia Kubacki and Roy and Clara Peters. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at St. John the Evangelist Church of Ubly with the Rev. Fr. Peter Gaspeny presiding. Burial will follow in the spring at St. John Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Children's Education fund in care of Jill Ogryski, P.O. Box 25, Ubly, Mich., 48475. Dorothy Gilson, 87, of Blissfield passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at Blissfield Place in Blissfield. Dorothy was born on Jan. 2, 1923, in Detroit, the daughter of Dan and Ada (Muholland) Schlotter. She was married to James “Ed” Gilson on Oct. 15, 1944. He preceeded her in death in 2002. Together, Ed and Dorothy owned and operated Gilson’s Hardware store in Blissfield. Dorothy served on the Blissfield Village Council for many years, and was a member of the Blissfield American Legion Auxiliary. She also was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Blissfield. In their free time, Dorothy and Ed traveled extensively. Surviving are her children, James E. (Diana) Gilson of Valley Center, Kan., Letah K. (Richard) Kilmer of Blissfield, Denise L. (Doug) Adams of Yucaipa, Calif., and Laurie A. (Keith) Forche of Blissfield; grandchildren, Jim (Claudine) Gilson, Jeremy (Jaretta) Gilson, Dana (Christopher) Sargent, Leslie (Ben) Nachtrab, Samuel (Kelly) Forche and Benjamin (Lindsey) Forche; and great-grandchildren, Grady Gilson, Adrienne Gilson, Meghan Palmer, Annika Gilson and Ryker Sargent. Following Dorothy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Her family will receive visitors on Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield. Edith Marie Stone, age 85, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at the Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room.  She was born July 26, 1924, in Goshen, Ind.,  a daughter to the late Willard L. and Elizabeth (Schriener) Brown.  Edith had been a resident of Sturgis most of her life and had been employed by the Sturgis Credit Bureau for three years, the Gateway Shopper, and as office manager for Direct Lumber, Inc. in Burr Oak, for 21 years, retiring in 1980. On Feb. 5, 1944, she married Robert W. Chapla.  While serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II he was M.I.A. on June 26, 1945 and was declared deceased one year later. On Dec. 30, 1948, in Bristol, Ind., she married Wendell O. Stone.  He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 2004. Edith was baptized in Burr Oak in the United Methodist Faith and was active with her high school graduating class of 1941.  She was also an active member of the Sturgis Women’s Club, enjoyed creative writing, crafts, casino gambling, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and was an avid arm chair Michigan sports fan.   Surviving are one daughter, Vivian (Terry) VanNest of Sturgis; three sons, Richard Stone and family friend, Bob Lederman of Sturgis, John E. Stone of Sturgis, and Thomas P. Stone of Florida; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and one brother, Willard L. Brown. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place.  A memorial service celebrating the life of Edith M. Stone will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at the Hackman Family Funeral Home - Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091 with the Rev. Deb Johnson, First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, MI.  Memorial donations in her memory may be directed to the Sturgis Women’s Club, 1001 Walker Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Assumption Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. The family will receive friends and family on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. at the Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson with the Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Interment of ashes will be held in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bronson. Elaine was born on May 13, 1943 to David and Natalie (Smoker) Kibiloski in Battle Creek. She graduated from Bronson High School in 1961 and went on to attend Wright’s Beauty Academy, graduating in 1962. She married Dean B. Grindle in August of 1979 in Bronson. He preceded her in death in 1995. Elaine was a life long resident of Bronson, later moving to Coldwater, where she owned and operated her own beauty shop, Elaine’s Hairstylists, from 1964 to 1974. She held many other jobs through the years, working for the Community Health Center of Branch County, the State Police Post and Wal-Mart. Elaine was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Church and the Coldwater Eagles. She served as a judge for the Branch County 4-H Fair parade committee, former Girl Scout Leader, former “Big Sister’ for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, and an organizer for the St. Judes Bik-a-thon. She also volunteered as a home health care provider in Coldwater. Elaine enjoyed the casinos and shopping the flea market at Shipshewana. She also loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Elaine is survived by her son David Grindle and fiancé Autumn Elliott of Quincy, her daughter Kimberly (Matt) Dwyer of Coldwater, her brother Larry Kibiloski and his wife Virginia Ryan of Kansas City, Mo.,  and her grandchildren Ashley, Stephanie, and Lance Coco, AnnaKate Dwyer, Shane Grindle and Kaitlyn Grindle. Ellen May Cole, age 89‚ of Constantine, passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at the Fairview Living Centre in Centreville. She was born in Three Rivers on May 25, 1920, a daughter of Delbert L. and Ethel O. (Stevenson) Cole. Ellen was a homemaker and she enjoyed making jewelry and collecting dolls. Surviving Ellen are her brothers, Delbert J. Cole and George L. Cole, both of Constantine; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother at infancy; and four sisters, Dorothy Cole, Kyra Tokarski, Ruth Brooks and Juanita Anderson. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and interment of ashes will be in Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers. Arrangement were handled by Eley Funeral Homes in Constantine.   |

Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bronson. She was primarily a homemaker but did work outside of the home. She had worked for the Douglas factory for seven years and then in 1957 she and her husband built the White Swan Motel in Bronson. They operated the motel until 1972.  Florentine was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Church, the Rosary Society and the Lady Knights of Columbus.  She and her husband worked at the K of C fish fry together and enjoyed attending their dance club. She also enjoyed flowers, cooking and baking, playing cards, sewing and fishing. Florentine especially loved spending time with her family.  She is survived by her daughter, Karen (Mike) Darr of Dexter; her son, Francis (Judy) Czajkowski of Roseville; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, James (Karen) Kelley of Ontonagon; and a sister-in-law, Gwen Kelley.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Susan Hewlett in 2001; and two brothers, Alvin Kelley and Gerald Kelley.  Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary of Assumption Church or School. Gertrude Jane “Trudy” Dury, age 77, of Sturgis, Mich.,  passed away early Sunday morning, Jan. 31, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis following a five-month illness. She was born Nov. 13, 1932, in Detroit, Mich., a daughter to the late Charles and Lucille (Baer) Richards. Trudy had resided in Sturgis since 1953. Her early life was spent in Montpelier, Ohio and she had also lived briefly in San Antonio, Texas and Fort Wayne, Ind. On Feb. 11, 1951, she married William Dury in Bryan, Ohio. She and her husband founded, owned and operated Dury Oil Company in Sturgis and she was a dedicated wife and mother. She received her associate degree from the International Business School in Fort Wayne, Ind., where she graduated number one in her class. She was a past president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and was involved in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Trudy was always actively involved in her children’s lives. She was a Girl Scout leader and for many years she was a ballet assistant. She enjoyed singing, photography, arts and crafts including jewelry making and rock collecting. In the more recent years advanced stages of Multiple Sclerosis limited her involvement in community functions. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 58 years, William “Bill” Dury; two daughters, Kendra (Troy) King of Leonidas and Kim (Vince) Little of Sturgis; one son, Kyle (Christina) Dury of Vicksburg; 10 grandchildren, McLaine Dury, Shelby Dury, Nathaniel Dury, Natasha Bowman, Cameron Bowman, Craig Bowman, Nick King, Katie King, Grant Little and Blake Little; and several nieces and nephews. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, (269) 651-2331 where a memorial service celebrating the life of Trudy Dury will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Floyd Kunce will officiate. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial donations would be appreciated to the National MS Society, Michigan Chapter 21311 Civic Center Dr., Southfield, MI 48076. Harold Allen (Bud) Coe, Jr., 66, of Rockport, Texas died Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 at Rockport Coastal Care Center after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease and cancer. His sister Joyce was by his side. Bud was born on June 3, 1943 in Ypsilanti to Harold Allen Coe, Sr. and Beulah “Jean” (Crampton) Coe. He grew up in the Quincy area graduating from Coldwater High School in 1961. He attended Ferris College and Chicago Art School. Bud married Iva Jo Robinson in 1966. They moved to Hermosa Beach, Calif., where they became parents to their daughter Kyra Ananda Coe. Bud was best known as a free spirit and for his love of music, his gentle nature and artistic abilities. The “big tiger” painting which graced the south side of the Lamplighter Bar for many years was one of Bud’s creations. After 20 years of absence, in the late 90’s Bud made contact with the family providing them the opportunity to share the last several years of his life. During his lifetime Bud traveled extensively and live in California, Iowa and Louisiana — surviving Hurricane Katrina by helicopter rescue to Corpus Christi, Texas. While there, Bud suffered a medical trauma and chose to live out his life at Rockport Coastal Care Center, where he was cared for and greatly loved for his gentle soul and for being a special man. Bud is survived by his daughter Kyra A. Coe, granddaughter Jennifer M. Summitt, parents Harold A. and Beulah Jean Coe, Sr., sisters Joyce (Coe) Jakl and husband Michael and Janice (Coe, Szafranski) Yesh, nieces Marni Szafranski and Heidi (Szafranski) and husband Sean, nephew Tony (Jennifer) Szafranski, great nieces and nephews Alicia (Taylor) Smullen and husband Ty, Michael Ruhman, Coe and Kendyll Szafranski, Legend Szafranski and Espen and Magnus McKisic, and great-great nieces and nephews Adalie, Coelie, Anistin and Westin Smullen. Preceding Bud in death was niece Camala Dawn Szafranski in 1987. Memorial services in loving memory will be held at a later date. That information will be published in The Daily Reporter. Jo Ann Nelson, age 70, of Peyton, Colo., and formerly of Bronson, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at Pikes Peek Hospice in Colorado Springs, Colo., after three and a half years of battling ovarian cancer.  Jo Ann was born July 13, 1939, in Ontario, Ind.,  a daughter to the late Floyd (Tony) and Ilene (Parish) Nelson.  Jo Ann had lived her early years in Bronson, graduating from Bronson High School with the Class of 1957.  She then attended the Fort Wayne Business College.  She had been employed at American Hoist & Derrick Co. of Fort Wayne, Ind., Superior Match Co. of Joliet, Ill., Remington Arms, National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., Stanford University of Palo Alto, Calif., Pillar Point Fishing Trips in Half Moon Bay, Calif. She then opened Gerald Parish Antiques in Half Moon Bay, Calif., and later worked for Boomtown Casino in Verdi, Nev.  Jo Ann was very interested in the American Indians and there artifacts, she liked antiques and treasure hunting, enjoyed being outdoors along the ocean and mountains and loved her dogs.  She is survived by one sister, Carol (Tom) Lundorff of Reno, Nev.; one brother, Jerry L. Nelson of Bronson; special friend and care giver, Mary Perez of Peyton, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews.  The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Jo Ann Nelson will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the funeral home with Rev. Kenneth Edgar Welch, 83, passed away in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Jan. 28, 2010. Born on Oct. 20, 1926 in Adrian, Mich., the second of four children born to Percy and Mollie Welch. Ken was a 1944 graduate from Adrian High School. He was a Navy veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater. In 1947 he married his beloved wife, Dorothy Marie (Albro). They celebrated 62 happy years of marriage. For many years he helped run the family business, Welch Cleaners, in Adrian. He later became a “Million Dollar Seller” with Prudential Life Insurance. He served as a City Commissioner (City of Adrian), a Trustee at the First Presbyterian Church, and a Boy Scout Master. He helped his Boy Scouts build the Scout Building on the Adrian Fair Grounds. After moving to Scottsdale, Ariz., in 1974, he worked for years at Handyman, Home Depot and Paul’s Hardware, where his building knowledge was in high demand. Ken and his wife were world travelers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Mollie Welch; brother, Royal Welch, and sister, Dorothy Eberline. He is survived by his wife, daughter, Judy Jenkins (David); son, Jerry; brother, Donald Welch of Adrian; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Right after his death his great-grandson, Benjamin (9) said, “I never saw him angry or sad; he was always happy.” Private services were held at Green Acres Mortuary, Scottsdale, Ariz. Marian Leona (Cowell) Knapp, age 96, of Adrian died Jan. 31, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. She was born June 12, 1913, in Lenawee County, the daughter of Clyde and Alena (Force) Cowell. She graduated from Sand Creek High School with the Class of 1930. On Aug. 4, 1946, she married Tom Knapp. He preceded her in death in 1971. Marian is survived by one niece, Ileen (John) DeVelbiss of Colorado; two nephews, David (Patti) Cowell of Florida and Gene (Mary) Cowell of Ottawa Lake; several great-nieces and nephews, and cousins, Mabel Lewis and Margaret Poucher, both of Adrian. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Gerald “Dike” Cowell; and a nephew, Roger Cowell, who gave her a family nickname, “Aunt Moo.” The funeral service for Marian will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Wagley Funeral Home with Pastor Fritz Kruse officiating. Mary Louise Somsel, 62, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  She was born Feb. 28, 1947 in Cambria Township, to Lorain and June (Keiser) Farrell.  She was formerly married to John Bowman in 1963.  On July 8, 1977, she married Carl Somsel and he survives. Mary was a member of the Hillsdale City Church.  She attended Hillsdale High School.  Mary enjoyed her grandchildren, family activities, camping and garage sales. Surviving besides her husband Carl are two children, Melinda Breault and Brian Bowman, both of Hillsdale; her mother, June Dull of Osseo; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Barb (Mike) Vernier of Coldwater and Sherry (Phil) Shaw of North Adams; two step-sons, Kevin and Scott; two half-sisters, Linda and Pat and a half-brother, Joe; and best friend Becky Hanning. She was preceded in death by her father, Lorain and step-father, Don Dull. Melanie May Collins, 32, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday Jan. 23, 2010 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born July 25, 1977 in Coldwater. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1995 and was a substitute bus driver for Camden-Frontier Schools. Melanie received a medical assistant degree from Ross Medical School and was attending Kellogg Community College to become a registered nurse. She enjoyed cooking, music and dancing, had a wonderful sense of humor and an outgoing personality, and loved her family. On Oct. 23, 1999, she married John Collins and he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Allison Marie Collins, Hillsdale; a son, Jared Michael Collins, Hillsdale; parents, Marion Leroy and Alice (Houtz) Stemen,  Allen; sister, Amy (Jack Church) Stemen, Homer; and a brother, Joshua (Sarah) Stemen, Quincy. She was preceded in death by two grandmothers and two grandfathers. Funeral services are at 1 pm. Thursday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Paul Pickell officiating. Mildred L. Bowman, age 91 of Addison, passed away on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. She was born on Oct. 13, 1918, in Medina Township to Curtis H. and Theresa (Dillion) McKibbin.  She married Maxwell J. Bowman on Jan. 16, 1938, in Addison, and he preceded her in death on June 14, 1974. Mildred graduated from Addison High School in 1937.  She operated the former Bowman’s Bakery in Addison from 1938-1940 and then she worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti.  She was a cook at Addison Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1988.  She also was a homemaker all her life. Mildred was a member of the former Addison Methodist Church, member of the Addison Senior Citizens Center and the Carousel Club of Addison. Surviving are one son, Owen H. (Jane) Bowman of Addison, one daughter, Marlene (Paul) Gillespie of Dartown, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one sister, Juanita Jennings of North Adams, nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell, one son, Dr, George E. Bowman, one daughter, Maxine Gerber and one brother, Charles McKibbin. Richard Carmen Young, age 81, of Three Rivers, passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at the Howell Care Center, in Howell.  He was born on Sept. 7, 1928, in Vashti, N.D., a son of Ray and Mildred Young. Mr. Young had been a lifetime resident of this area.  He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He worked at a very young age for Huddleston Lumber Company and eventually retired as sales manager after 45 years.  He also worked at Camp Eberhart for 10 years following retirement, where he was known as “Uncle Dick”. Mr. Young was a life member of the Three Rivers Eagles, where he served as past president, and also the American Legion Hice-Shutes Post #170. He truly loved his family, friends,  and his two pets, Babies and Miss Bitzy. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving family, wife of 55 years, Joyce (Hull) Young of Three Rivers; two daughters, Patricia (John) Weatherwax, of Three Rivers and Judy (Jeff) Miller of Three Rivers; a son, Dennis (Kathy) Young of Three Rivers; a brother, Norris Young, of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren Katrina (Scott) Norman, Miranda (Todd) Sylvester, Nicole Young, Meghan (John) Negus, Joshua German, Steven Higgins, Richard (Shannon) Mathews, William and James Mathews; several great-grandchildren; three nieces; and a nephew. Rick D. Williams, age 60, of Cement City passed away on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at his home. He was born on Aug. 17, 1949, in Jackson, Mich., to Harold L. and Thelma L. (Adams) Williams. He married Patti A. Thompson on July 30, 1983, on Goose Lake, Cement City, and she survives. Rick lived in the Cement City area all his life. He graduated from Columbia Central High School in 1968. He then earned an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Jackson Community College. Rick was in the National Guard from 1968-1974. He was part owner of Paradise Campground in Cement City. He was the Woodstock Township Police Chief from 1970-1997, and he also trained K-9 Dogs. He then was employed at the Gus Harrison Facility in Adrian since 1997. Rick was elected Woodstock Township Supervisor in 2008. He was on the Addison Hospital Board for several years. He was a member of the Durkee-Seager Post #550 American Legion, Onsted, and a member 3689 Fraternal Order of Eagles of Brooklyn. Surviving besides his wife, Patti, are one stepson, Derek (Ann) Tipton of Ocala, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Shawn (Mike) Hendershot of Adrian; one brother, Terry (Linda) Williams of Clark Lake; two sisters, Deborah (Jerry) Lowe of Manitou Beach, Karin (John) Devine of Cement City; his father, Harold L. Williams of Cement City; several grandchildren, and several nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents. He was born Feb. 15, 1948, in Morenci. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Feb. 2 at Thompson Funeral Home, Pioneer. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1 at the funeral home. Interment will be in Floral Grove Cemetery, Pioneer, with Pastor Mike Wilder officiating. |

Terry R. Adams, age 63, of Cement City passed away on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. He was born on Dec. 28, 1946, in Hillsdale, Mich., to Robert A. and Marjorie (Jewell) Adams, Jr. He married Carol Jo Kelley on May 27, 1967, in Cement City, and she survives. Terry was raised in Jonesville before moving to the Cement City area in 1977. He graduated from Jonesville High School in 1967. He then attended Jackson Business College and Cleary College. Terry was a Vietnam veteran serving in the United States Army. He was employed at Ford Motor Company in Saline, retiring in 2004. He was a member of the Wilbur-Barlett Post #315 American Legion, Brooklyn, Mich., member of 3689 Fraternal Order of Eagles of Brooklyn, and a member of the U.A.W. Local 892 in Saline. Terry was an avid bowler, where he was on leagues at Brooklyn and at the Lenawee Rec. He was also an avid reader. Surviving besides his wife, Carol, are one son, Brian (Rochelle) Adams of Tecumseh; two daughters, Kelli (Kurt) Reichert of Macomb Township, Mich., and Kristen (Paris) Anderson of Jackson; nine grandchildren; his mother, Marjorie Adams of Jonesville; one sister, Bobbie (Marlon) Reed of Hillsdale; and one aunt, Dorothy Broughton of Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father and one grandson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Drew Woods officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010. Cremation will follow. Military Rites performed by the Wilbur-Barlett Post #315 American Legion, Brooklyn, Mich. Vincent H. Counterman, 69, of Portage, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 30, 2010, at his residence. Vince was born April 14, 1940, in Paw Paw the son of Henry “Hank” and Marie (Oddi) Counterman. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. A graduate of Paw Paw H.S., Vince enjoyed playing all sports, especially track. In his early years he spent many hours working on the family fruit farm. The past 30 years Vince self-published a weekly newspaper in Charlotte, N.C. and Kalamazoo, most recently The Grapevine Weekly in Kalamazoo. He attended Centerpoint Church and enjoyed gardening, coffee with his friends, and golf. Vince was preceded in death by his former wife Shirley. On August 2, 1997, he was united in marriage to his loving wife, Lavonne, who survives and she cherished his love and devotion. Also surviving are his children, Rhonda (Donald) Stull, Randy (Terri) Counterman, Rick Counterman, Renee (Dan) Collins; step-children, Eric Henckel, Julie (Scott) Woodstock, Tammy (Chad) Mitchell; 11 grandchildren, Clay (Jessica) Stull, Alex (Melissa) Stull, Kaitlyn Stull, Emily Stull, Wyatt and Joey Counterman, Shaun and Abbey Woodstock, Ryan and Nathan Henckel, Wyatt Mitchell; one great-granddaughter, Norah Stull; sisters and brother, Sherry Campbell, Chuck Counterman, Bonnie (Roger) Fenstermaker; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ft. Custer National Cemetery (meet in assembly area at 10:50 a.m.). A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Centerpoint Church, 2345 N. 10th Street with Pastor Dar VanderWal officiating. Friends may meet the family Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice. |

W. Gayle "Bill" Davis, 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Boyne City on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010. He was born in Grand Rapids, on Jan. 19, 1931, to J. Warne and Florence (Spidel) Davis. Bill was still an infant when his family moved back to East Jordan, where his mother was born and raised. He had many fond memories of summers spent on his grandparents, Wilbur and Bertha Spidel's, farm. After graduating from East Jordan High School with the class of 1949, Bill worked for Buick in Flint, riding his Indian motorcycle back to East Jordan every weekend. In 1951, he married the former Esther Zitka. They were later divorced. |

William P. “Bill” Mitchell, age 67, of Addison passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at his home, under the loving care of his family. Bill was born March 27, 1942, in Holloway, Mich., the son of James and Dorothy (Bailey) Mitchell. He graduated from Blissfield High School with the Class of 1960 and went on to attend Adrian College. On Jan. 26, 1964, Bill married the love of his life, Ruth “Carolyn” Lloyd, in North Baltimore, Ohio. Carolyn, his wife of 46 years, survives. Bill worked for Addison Products and VACO Tool in Jonesville as a purchasing agent. He then started Maple Leaf Financial Investments as an independent broker for Raymond James Financial Services. Bill was an active member of the Addison United Church, serving on their Board. He served on the Addison School Board and the Maurice Spear Campus Board as well. He was a member of the Adrian Rotary Club and an active supporter of Ducks Unlimited where he worked on committees. For many years, Bill taught Hunter Safety in Addison, and shared his passion for the outdoors and hunting. Above all, Bill was a family man. He looked forward to weekend gatherings, and enthusiastically supported his grandchildren in sports and 4-H.    In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his children, Claire (Mike) Warner of Onsted, Laura (David) Boomer of Eaton Rapids, William “Pat” (Tamara) Mitchell of Addison and Jennifer (Tom) Gaff of Shelby Township; 12 grandchildren, Jessica Nash, Nicole, Kelsey and Carly Warner, Courtney, Alec and Liam Boomer, Anthony Olson, Emily Olson-Fox, Ava Mitchell, and Mitchell and Lauren Gaff; a sister, Mary Ann (James) Derby of Addison; and nephew, Jeff Derby of Hudson. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James, and niece, Marlene Derby. At Bill’s request, cremation will take place. A Celebration of Life honoring Bill will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at the Maurice Spear Campus Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Jewett and Pastor Will Snyder officiating. Friends may visit the family at Wagley Funeral Home on Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. You may also send condolences at www.wagleyfuneralhome.com.
