Alva Junior Mettler, age 84, of Sturgis and formerly of Burr Oak, died Thursday morning, Feb. 25, 2010 at Fairview Living Centre in Centreville. Alva was born June 20, 1925 in Branch County, the son of the late Alva A. and Hazel (Twadell) Mettler. Alva grew up in the Quincy area, graduating from Quincy High School in 1943. He married Doris N. Johnson on Aug. 8, 1943. Alva was a proud veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy as quartermaster on the battleship West Virginia in the Pacific Theater. His early working years were primarily in Branch County, working as a meat cutter for A&P stores. In 1953, Alva and Doris moved to the Burr Oak area, where he worked for Davidson’s Grocery. Alva was meat manager at Harding’s in Colon for over 20 years, retiring in 1987. In Burr Oak, Alva was active in the Good Fellowship Club and the Sports Boosters, was a Boy Scout leader, served on the Burr Oak School Board and was president of the PTA. He was a featured performer in community variety shows and emceed many local events through the years. A member of the Burr Oak Methodist Church, Al served on many boards and committees for the church, but took particular joy in serving as manager of the church’s restaurant at the St. Joseph County Fair. Alva and Doris moved to Sturgis in 1992, where Alva enjoyed walking at the Doyle Center, delivering Meals on Wheels, and playing cards at the Sturgis Senior Center. He loved fishing, especially if the trip included a grandchild. Alva is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Doris, of Sturgis, children; Alan (Mary) Mettler of Nashville; Rollin (Susan) Mettler of Sturgis; and Patti (Kevin) Miller of Sherwood; seven grandchildren; Kimberly (Jonathan) Book, Corey (Beth) Mettler, Elizabeth (Scott) Kraemer, Jessica Blake, Lindsay (Wesley) Wriston, Andrea Mettler, and Jason Miller; and eight great grandchildren; brother, Edward (Doris) Mettler of Largo, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Reed, and one brother, Kenneth Mettler. The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 1-3 p.m. at the Burr Oak United Methodist Church. A memorial service celebrating the life of Alva Mettler will then take place at 3 p.m., with Rev. Alan Mettler and Rev. Don Graham officiating. Private interment of the cremains will take place at later date at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. If desired the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Alva to the Burr Oak United Methodist Church, COA-Sturgis Meal Site, or the Michigan Parkinson Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the church on Saturday or anytime at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. |

Alvera Wessel Alvera "Trudy" Wessel, age 83, of Macomb Township, died February 20, 2010, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. Mrs. Wessel and her husband lived and operated their family farm at 19 Mile and Schoenherr. She was a former member of St. Matthias Catholic Church. Mrs. Wessel was a private duty nurse for many years; she loved nursing, reading, and sewing. She is survived by her children, Harold (Cathy) Wessel, Jr. of Macomb, Steven (Maryann) Wessel of Macomb, Cynthia Woityra of Macomb, Veronica (Boris) Kocijan of West Virginia, Kathryn (Dave) Miller of Georgia; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Camille Rycerz. Elizabeth J. Kosmala Elizabeth "Bettie" Jane Kosmala (nee Turner), age 87, died February 21, 2010. Elizabeth Kosmala, known as "Bettie" to her friends and family died peacefully in her sleep at Mary's Center for Seniors where she had resided for the last four years. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Bettie ultimately moved to New York where she met her then-"soldier" Stanley. After World War II they moved to Detroit, Mich. Bettie made her career in Detroit working for General Motors Photographic. She is survived by her son Joseph (Ardis) Kosmala of Clinton Township.; grandchildren, Cortney (Jerrold) Jackson of Southfield, Lindsay (Jonathan) Furst of Asheville, N.C., and Chelsea Kosmala of Clinton Township.; her sister, Claire Horn of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; brothers, James (Peg) Turner of New Jersey and Edward (Ann) Turner of New Jersey; and sister-in-law, Lottie Buzlawski of Warren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Stanley Kosmala; sisters, Hazel Waruzewski, Ruth Allen and Helen Thomas; and brothers, Robert Turner and Charles Turner. Gerald John Landwehr Gerald John Landwehr, age 85, a resident of Warren for over 47 years, died Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at Henry Ford Hospital in Clinton Township. Gerald was born August 31, 1924, in Shepherd, Michigan. Mr. Landwehr served in the United States Navy attaining the rank of Yeoman second class. After his discharge, he returned to Michigan where he began his career as a land surveyor. He was co-owner of Mavis & Landwehr Civil Engineers and Land Surveyors for many years before venturing on his own, operating Landwehr & Associates Land Surveying. Mr. Landwehr worked as a land surveyor for over 50 years. When Gerald was not working, his fondest hobby was stereo photography, which is 3D photography. He was a member of the Detroit Stereo Graphic Society, and received two international awards for his work. Gerald also loved music and dancing, however, his greatest passion in life was his family. He always held great satisfaction in the fact of surrounding himself with his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mr. Landwehr was the beloved husband of the late Gloria (nee Boucher). He is the dear father of Lynn Hall, Chari (Chet) Dettloff, Kirk (Cynthia) Landwehr, and loving grandfather of Gerald (Janelle) Hall, Kristen (Jeff) Bishop, Sean (Kathy) Dettloff, Michael Dettloff, Kelsey Dettloff, Justin Landwehr, and the late Robert Hall. Great-grandpa of Emily, Benjamin, Brett, Dana, Michael, Carter, and Alayna. He was the dear companion of Lorraine Welch, and brother of Jeanette Sherman, Doris Kinsman, Donald Landwehr, Shirley (Pete) Reed, Ruth (Del) Smolinski, and Judi Palowski. Hazel Thompson Hazel Thompson, age 94, of Warren, passed away on February 24, 2010, in Florida. She was born March 9, 1915, in Holcomb, Missouri and later lived in Piggott, Arkansas until moving to Detroit, Michigan in 1948. She worked as a cosmetic saleslady at the Montgomery Wards Warren store until retiring in 1979, after which she moved to Florida, where she enjoyed fishing and gardening. Since retiring she has also lived in Arizona before moving back to Warren, Michigan. She is survived by her daughters, Margie Culpepper of Phoenix, Ariz. and Virginia (Chuck) Harris of Warren, Mich.; daughter-in-law, Barbara Cullum of Stuart, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; nephew, Jerry Rogers of Dryden, Mich.; and niece, Elaine Nixon of Piggott, Ark. She was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Pearl Thompson; siblings, Walter Cletus Thompson, Opal Coburn and Polly Looney; ex-husband, Harvey Cullum; son, Harvey Delaine Cullum; daughter, Louise Rogers; three grandsons, Tommy Rogers, Ricky Rogers, and Gary Harris. Kenneth I. Day, 86, of Coldwater, died on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 at his home. Ken was born on March 5, 1923 to Cleo C. and Arlene (Otis) Day. He married Elsie E. Sechler on July 1, 1941 in Bryan, Ohio. Mr. Day was a resident of Branch County all of his life, where he was a successful car dealer and real estate developer/investor. He remained very active in his businesses right up until his passing. When Ken wasn’t looking for a deal on real estate or a car, he could be found in Kentucky drilling oil wells, or at the race track watching his favorite race horse that he bred, raised and trained on his farm in Coldwater. He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association and the Michigan Harness Horse Association. Ken was a loving father and grandfather who greatly valued his family. Ken is survived by his daughters, Carolyn Hammond of Coldwater, Darlene (Jerry) Morgan of Bronson and Kendra (Mike) Burns of Coldwater, grandchildren, Ken Clayman, Mike Clayman, Susan Fickle, Jamie Cline, Sarah Kling, Steve Burns, Stephanie Arlt and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Elsie, on Feb. 9, 2009. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 from 3-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater.  The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. also at Dutcher Funeral Home. Mary Lou Teets Mary Lou Teets, age 76, of Shelby Township, died February 23, 2010, peacefully in her sleep at home. Mary Lou is survived by her only daughter, Linda Reinke; two granddaughters, Kayla and Katarina; one great-grandson, Trenten; as well as two sisters, Betty Mathews and Donna Lea Wineman; one brother, Don Davison; many nieces and nephews; and lots of good friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Harland (Tuffy) Teets in 1970; as well as four brothers and one sister. Mary Lou was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 4659 in Disco, Mich. and worked at the post bar for several years. Affectionately known to many as "Mama Lou" or simply "Mama," at McClenaghans, she will be greatly missed by many. A very giving person in life as well as death, per her request, her body has been donated to Wayne State University so that others may learn. Stephen W. Sedlar Stephen W. Sedlar, age 76, of Harrison Township, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, in Florida surrounded by his loving son Michael, sister-in-law Irene Mastalier, and nephew Jim Mastalier. He was born June 24, 1933, in Detroit. Steve was a Marine Corps veteran serving in the Korean War, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He retired in 1993 after 30 years of service with Ford Motor Company. Steve was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Mary Sedlar.
