Bernita Fay Stout, age 94, of Tecumseh passed away Feb. 19, 2010, at Lynwood Manor, Adrian. Bernita was born Jan. 10, 1916, in Medina Township, the daughter of Claude G. and Rena (Fay) Ranger. On June 16, 1936, she married Carson R. Stout. He preceded her in death Aug. 9, 1999. Bernita was a spirited woman who loved her home and garden. She is survived by one daughter, Sandra S. Casper of Tecumseh, and a granddaughter, Sally Ann Casper of Florida.  Besides her husband, Carson, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother. At her request, cremation has taken place and a private interment will be in Brookside Cemetery. Memorial gifts in Bernita’s name may be made to the Lenawee County Humane Society or the charity of your choice. Arrangements were entrusted to the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh. Clarence "Sonny" McKenzie, age 70, of Pittsford, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, in his home after a short illness. He was born Jan. 22, 1940, in Chauncey, W. Va., the son of Henry and Goldie (Stratton) Mckenzie. He was employed for 40 years at Tecumseh Products, retiring in 2004. His greatest joy in life was being with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR races and the Detroit Tigers. Sonny is survived by his wife, Judith (Hall) McKenzie; two daughters, Renee Friedrich of Pittsford and Heather (Kory) Osmun of Hillsdale; two sons, Robby (Jen) McKenzie of Osseo and Chan McKenzie of Osseo; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris (Ray) Rumsey of Pittsford and Peggy Allen of Montpilier, Ind. and three brothers, Randy (Bobbie) McKenzie of Jackson, Don McKenzie of Lyons, Ohio and Doug (Sandy) McKenzie of Osseo. David L. Rhine David L. Rhine, age 70, of Clinton Township died tragically in an automobile accident in Florida on Thursday, February 18, 2010. He was born November 1, 1939, in Detroit the son of the late Howard and the late Dorothy (nee: Prebble) Rhine. David was a retired captain of the Warren Fire Department. After his retirement he enjoyed spending his time at the family cottage in Lewiston, or in Orlando and Kissimmee, Florida. While in Florida he grew to love Disney World. However, Disney World will never compare to the love he held for his grandchildren. David is survived by his children, Cindy (Dan) Fletcher, Nancy (Larry) Samyn, Patty (Jerry) Gorney, and Shelly (Steve) Brown; grandchildren, Bret, Erin, Sara, Ryan, Alex, Jody, and Abbi. Dorothea was born Feb. 27, 1919, in New Haven Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. She eloped with William (Bill) E. Jones on New Year's Eve, 1937. Dorothea graduated from Corunna High School in 1936. She then attended teacher's college (now Central Michigan University), working toward her public school teaching credentials. Douglas E. Beyerlein Douglas E. Beyerlein, age 68, of Shelby Township, passed away Monday, February 15, 2010, at his home. Beloved father of Zachary, Kelly, and Andrew Beyerlein; dear brother of Charles and Gary Beyerlein. Douglas served in the U.S. Army 1st Division, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion from 1963-1965. Douglas received his education from Wayne State University and the University of Michigan, graduating with honors and a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Design in 1969. He was an award-winning artist who enjoyed graphic arts, sculpture, and painting. Douglas worked at General Motors as an automotive designer and engineer for 31 years, retiring in 1993. She was born in Three Rivers on July 18, 1960, a daughter of Ivan and Martha (Borkholder) Miller. Ella was a member of the Old Order Amish Church and lived in the Centreville area most of her life. Ella is survived by her parents, Ivan and Martha (Borkholder) Miller of Centreville; three sisters and four brothers, Laura and Oba Borkholder of Mendon, Glen and Anna Lea Miller of Bloomington, Wisc., Erma and Reuben Bontrager of Lancaster, Wisc., Amos and Polly Miller of Centreville, Ira and Irene Miller of Butler, Ohio, Levi and Millie Miller of Fremont, Mich., Wilma Miller of Centreville; 55 nieces and nephews; 74 great-nieces and nephews; 12 aunts and uncles; and many cousins and friends.  She was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, one niece, one nephew, one great nephew, two aunts, two uncles, and her grandparents. Esther Arlene Nissley, 67, of Burr Oak, Mich., passed away Friday Feb. 19, 2010, at her home. She was born Oct. 6, 1942, in Sturgis, Mich., a daughter of the late Edwin and Mary (Hochstedler) Chupp. Mrs. Nissley resided in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area her whole life. On June 12, 1966 she married Glenn Nissley at the Oak Grove Amish Mennonite Church in Centreville, Mich. She owned and operated with her husband Nissley Disposal in Burr Oak. She was a home maker and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Nissley was a member of the Rosewood Fellowship Church in Shipshewana, Ind. She enjoyed the outdoors and gardening and truly loved helping others. Her greatest joy was the times she was surrounded by her family especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Glenn;  two daughters, Elaine (Daryl) Chupp of Sturgis and Ellen (Nelson) Miller of Burr Oak; two sons, Galen (Gloria) Nissley of Millersburg, Ind., and Gary (Tina) Nissley of Shipshewana, Ind.; 15 grandchildren and expecting her 16th grandchild; one sister, Mary Ellen (John) Miller of Burr Oak; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two infant brothers, Alvin and Paul. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at the Calvary Chapel, 66969 N. Evelyn E. Hendricks, age 81, of Tecumseh  passed away unexpectedly and went to be with her Heavenly Father, Feb. 18, 2010, while visiting family in California. She was born April 23, 1928, in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of Noble and Odessa (Mavis) Gregg. On Dec. 12, 1947, she married Merle M. Hendricks at the First Church of the Brethren in Adrian, Mich.  He survives. Evelyn was a graduate of Adrian High School, class of 1946. She was employed briefly with American Chain and Cable and also worked alongside her husband, Merle, on the family farm.   She was  a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of both the Gideons Auxiliary and the First Church of the Brethren, Adrian.  She will be greatly missed by her family and all those lives she enriched by knowing her. In addition to her husband, Merle, Evelyn is survived by three daughters,  Karen (Roy) Waycaster of Tecumseh, Janice (Wayne) Edwards of Grand Rapids, and Beverly (Rick) Koebbe of Moraga, Calif.; three grandchildren, Michelle Wiles of Dublin, Calif., Jena (Jan) Olsen of Nunica, Mich., and Kristen (Morgan) McGovert of Dublin, Calif.; six stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Evelyn Kindinger McEnery passed away on Jan 14, 2010, at Naples Community Hospital in Naples, Fla. Evelyn was born on March 12, 1926, in Adrian and spent her youth and early adulthood here. Evelyn graduated from Riggs School of Beauty Culture, and she and her husband, Robert Kindinger (deceased), moved to Reading, Mich., where she helped with the daily farm chores as well as owned and operated her own salon. Evelyn moved to Florida in 1970 and has resided there since that time.   She is survived by two sons, Paul Eugene (Carol) Kindinger of St. Charles, Mo., and Roger Dale (Thelma) Kindinger, of Naples, Fla., and one daughter, Sandee Meyers, of Adrian, Mich. She was blessed with eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Evelyn loved spending time with her family and looked forward to their visits. Evelyn’s wishes were to be cremated and a memorial is being planned for a later date in Adrian.   Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. |

Frank A. Janik, age 69, of Clayton passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010. Frank was born in Morenci, the son of Stanley and Anna (Turczin) Janik. He married Esther Marshall on Oct. 24, 1958, in Hillsdale. She survives. Frank worked as a maintenance man for the Dominican Sisters in Adrian for 20 years. He enjoyed deer hunting and he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Surviving Frank is his wife, Esther; daughter, Debbie (Steve) Kerr of Hudson; three granddaughters, Brandi (Calvin) Clark of Adrian, Stephanie Tax of Cambria and Jessica Kerr and Keith Otter of Adrian; four great-grandchildren, Alexander, Tyler, Andrew and Emersen; special young man, DJ Gerken; brother, Thomas (Maureen) Janik of Hudson; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services for Frank will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Clyde L. Wonders officiating. Interment will follow at North Dover Cemetery in Clayton. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Gene Alfred Scrogham, 61, of SR 120 Middlebury, Ind.,  was pronounced dead at 10:01 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at his residence, his death was unexpected and due to natural causes. He was born Jan. 18, 1949, in Elkhart, to Fred E. and Helen (Whittlinger) Scrogham. On May 5, 1973 he married Susan McDonald, they divorced Sept. 18, 1987. He then married Glenda Horne, and they later divorced. He was a 1967 graduate of Middlebury High School, served in the US Marine Corps from 1967 - 1971 during the Vietnam War, he was active in the Boy Scouts, Masonic Lodge in the Knights Templar, American Legion in the 40/8, Elks, Moose, VFW, the Catholic Church in the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include a son, Robert Gene (Chrissy) Scrogham of Middlebury, Ind.; and a grandson, Logan Scrogham. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Matthews Robert Scrogham in 2006. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m.Tuesday at the Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday also at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m.  on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at the funeral home. Services will be conducted by the Chaplain of the American Legion Post # 210. Burial will be in Mack Cemetery, Middlebury with full military graveside services preformed by the American Legion Post # 210, Middlebury. Jack W. Barnes, age 89, born Nov. 18, 1920; died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010. Jack was the son of Otis O. and Bernice (Garn) Barnes. He is survived by his wife Betty, son Jim (Diane); grandsons Jeffrey and Scott; sisters Betty (Ken) Dryer of Wayne and Ruth Root of Sarasota, Fla. He was preceded in death by son Ronald. Jack was born and raised on a farm in Kinderhook Township, Branch County and lived through the Great Depression. He attended grade school in a one-room school house and graduated from Coldwater High School. He was a 4-H Club member. Jack graduated from Michigan State College in 1943 with a B.S. in Agriculture. While at MSC, Jack met the love of his life, Betty Jane Schwarz, who he married on June 27, 1944 in Detroit, and cherished and loved for more than 65 years. He served 42 months in the Army during WWII and 23 months in Europe, returning in June 1946 and was discharged from the Army as Captain. In 1946, Jack began a 39 year career with Michigan Milk Producers Association, a Dairy Farmer Marketing Cooperative, the last 26 years as the MMPA General Manager. In 1983 and 1984 MMPA was listed in the Fortune 500 list of largest US companies. Jack also served on the boards of several organizations including: Valley Lea Dairies, (Pres.), South Bend, Ind.; Dairy Council of Michigan, (Pres.): Michigan 4-H Foundation, (Pres.); Michigan Dairy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, (Pres.); Americana Foundation, Novi and Burcham Hills Foundation. Jack’s honors from MSU Agriculture and Natural Resources include: Distinguished Service to Agriculture and Distinguished Alumnus, Alpha Gamma Rho Brother of the Century, Michigan 4-H Distinguished Service and Emerald Clover Society, Future Farmers of America, Honorary State Farmer and Distinguished Service to Agriculture by Michigan Farm Bureau. Jack was proud of his heritage and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society noting that both of his great-grandfathers fought in the Civil War. Jack and Betty lived in Royal Oak, later Beverly Hills from 1946 until his retirement. They were charter members (1947) of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Royal Oak. Upon retirement they moved to East Lansing and became members of University Lutheran Church. Jack’s church life and friends were always held with high regard. Jack liked gardening, bridge, golf and reading and was an avid MSU sports fan. He was devoted to God, his family and his country. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23, 11 a.m. at University Lutheran Church, 1020 S. Harrison Road, East Lansing, with the Rev. Martin Halom and Rev. Fred Fritz officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Private interment will take place at Waterhouse Cemetery, Coldwater. Joe H. Nicoletti, 82, of Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti.  Joe was born to Joseph and Ernesta Nicoletti in Richmond, Calif. He married Flora Jacuzzi on Jan. 11, 1953 and she preceded him in death in 1990. Joe retired from Jacuzzi Canada in 1980. He has been a resident of Hillsdale since 1992.  A proud member of the National Rifle Association, he also enjoyed woodworking and hunting. Joe will be greatly missed by many and especially his three daughters, Jo Ann (Marven) Blaha of Orangeville, Ontario, Canada; Janice (Richard) Jefferson of Oconomowoc, Wis., and Kathy (Dave) Tims of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; a son, Robert (Jody) Nicoletti of Brampton, Ontario, Canada; his companion of 18 years, Dolores Young of Hillsdale; a sister, Ella (Bill) Holt of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Ann (John) Null; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and the extended Young family. John J. Tomasino John J. Tomasino, age 81, of Chesterfield Township for 32 years, died February 19, 2010, at St. John Hospital, Detroit. Born October 28, 1928, in Detroit, Mich. He was a cement contractor and building contractor and owned Tomasino Builders. He was a member of St. Mary Queen of Creation Church, New Baltimore and served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Chesterfield Seniors and the Washington Seniors. He loved to travel and was an avid golfer. He is survived by his children, Gary of Chesterfield, Karen (Richard) Hubbard of Pinckney, Susan of Chesterfield and Traci (Eric) Schmid of Richmond, Nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, his daughter-in-law Elaine of Chesterfield and one brother Larry of Livonia. Kevin Lee Malone, 49, of Burr Oak, Mich., passed away Saturday evening, Feb. 20, 2010, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. He was born Sept. 17, 1960, Des Moines, Iowa, a son of Sheldon W. and Jackie (Johnson) Malone. Kevin was a lifelong resident of Burr Oak and graduated from Burr Oak High School with the class of 1979. He had been employed by Burr Aluminum, Victor Screw Products and Tube Fabricators all in Burr Oak. He was attending the Celebration Community Church in Sturgis. Kevin enjoyed playing darts and collecting hats. He loved spending time and playing with his many nieces and nephews and babysat each one of them over the years. Lawrence M. Granata Lawrence M. Granata, age 88, of Warren died Saturday, February 20, 2010, at Bortz Health Care Center in Warren. He was born December 17, 1921, in Italy the son of the late Nunzio and the late Maria Granata. Lawrence retired from Ford Motor Company after 35 years. After his retirement he enjoyed to travel. During the winter months he and his wife, Mary would spend their time in Clearwater, Florida. He also enjoyed going to the horse racetrack where he would watch the races and place bets on the horses. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary; children, Richard (Maureen), Elizabeth Kammer, and Joseph (Veronica); and his eight loving grandchildren. Visitation will be held Tuesday 3-9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. vigil service at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Road). Lyle Lewis Smitley, 85, of Union City died on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.   He was born on Oct. 31, 1924 in Mongo, Ind. to Lewis Franklin Smitley and Olive Ruth Riggle Smitley.   A part of the Union City community since 1937, Lyle enjoyed farming, football, baseball and hockey. He attended the United Methodist Church in Union City.  His parents; two sisters, Kathryn and Geraldine; a brother, Bernard and stepbrother, Theodore preceded him in death. Surviving are his brothers, Fred Smitley and wife, Rosemary of Union City and Hugh Smitley of Union City; sister-in-law, Joyce Smitley of Union City; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Putnam Funeral Home, 501 North Broadway Street, Union City, with Reverend Karen Nachtigall officiating. Marilyn Barton Wilhelm, age 92, of Venice, Fla., passed away Feb. 13, 2010.  She was born on May 2, 1917 in Sturgis,  a daughter of the late John and Elzina Calahan Barton, long-time residents of Sturgis. Marilyn graduated as co-valedictorian of her 1935 Sturgis High School class. She attended Kalamazoo College and the University of Michigan. She returned to Sturgis High School to teach English for two years before earning her masters degree from the University of Michigan and went on teaching at Grosse Pointe High School. On Oct. 14, 1944, she married Chris R. Wilhelm, also a 1935 graduate of Sturgis High School. While he was in Europe during World War II, she taught at Kalamazoo Central High School.  Their daughter, Linda, was born in 1949 in Detroit.  Subsequently, the Wilhelms lived in Battle Creek and Saginaw before moving to Rochester, N.Y., in 1962. Marilyn was very active in the PEO sisterhood and served in a variety of college alumni and church-related activities. In 1980, Chris and Marilyn retired spending winters in Venice. Surviving are her husband, Chris; daughter, Linda W. King and husband Don of Arlington, Va.; and nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents; and sister, Harriette Connolly. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Inurnment will take place later at Oaklawn Cemetery in Sturgis, Mich. A memorial service will take place in Venice, Fla. Marjorie J. Fisher married Dr. James S. Clapperton, II on May 3, 1947, in Saginaw. He died June 10, 1978. Marge assisted her husband with his medical practices in Fairgrove and then when they came to Coleman in 1950, until retiring in 1975. She spent 20 years summering in St. Ignace, working with her son, James, at the North Bay Inn and the Tradewinds Motel. |

Norman T. “Ted” Barron, 53, of Marshall, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall. Born May 20, 1956 in Morenci, he was the son of Walter and Helen (Chaffner) Barron Jr. Ted attended the Tecumseh schools and enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding motorcycles and camping. On Sept. 9, 1975, he married Tamela Sue (Chippewa), and she preceded him in death in 2001. Ted’s father also preceded him in death. Survivors include one daughter, Mandy Barron, of Montgomery; two sons, Matthew (Abbey) Barron, of Hillsdale, and Norman Barron of Hillsdale; his mother, Helen Barron of Montgomery; three brothers, Stan (Cathy) Barron of Adrian, Steve Barron of Tecumseh and Richard Barron of Montgomery; four grandchildren, Courtney Wert, Austin Duby, Aidan Coombs and Norman Barron III. Funeral services will be held noon Thursday at the George White Funeral Home in Reading with Pastor Don Lee officiating. Interment will follow in Cambria Cemetery No. 2. Ollie Prater, 72, of Litchfield, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born March 11, 1937, in Salyersville, Ky. to Nelvin and Rosetta (Bolden) Prater. Ollie belonged to the Albion Moose and Eagles Lodges and enjoyed leisure time sitting in the park, playing pool and gambling. Survivors include two daughters, Rosetta (Gary) Wickham of Georgia and Pamela Engle of Midland; one stepson, Dallas (Tina) Bumpus of Jonesville; 15 grandchildren, including Mike (Kari) Prater of Litchfield and Amy (Steve) Cain of Hillsdale; 11 great-grandchildren, including Gage Cain of Hillsdale and Mason Prater of Litchfield; one sister, Peachy Hall of Albion; one brother, Ovie Prater of Marshall and former wife, Arlene Engle of Jonesville. Raymond L. Leeper, age 77, of Burr Oak, loving husband of Dorothy Leeper, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Sturgis Hospital. He was born Feb. 28, 1932, in Chicago, a son to the late Charles and Edna (Smock) Leeper. Raymond has been a resident of Burr Oak since 1994, previously living in Chesterton, Ind.,  for 17 years and prior to that in Portage, Ind., for 40 years. On Nov. 22, 1972, in Burr Oak he married Dorothy King. He was a retired member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. Some of the popular construction projects he was involved in were the McCormick Place, White Sox Park, both in Chicago, and Oprah Winfrey’s home in Rolling Prairie, Ind. Raymond enjoyed his work and during his retirement enjoyed fishing, golfing, and playing cards. Raymond was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion Post 260, the V.F.W. Post, and past member of the Moose all in Portage, Ind. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; son, Dennis Leeper; daughter, Debra Leeper; five step-children, Antionette Hart (Bill Basham) of Sturgis, Edward (Pam) Strudas, Myrtle (Curt) Zehner, and Michael Strudas, all of Chesterton, Ind., and Jeanne (Dennis) Root of Sturgis; step-grandchildren, Raychael (Joe) Schmidt, Ricky (Julie) Hart, Amber (Dennis) Wendling, Amy Zehner, Edward Strudas III, Mark Strudas, Emily Strudas, Michael (Tara) Strudas, Kera Strudas, Jena Root, Cass Root, and Cole Root; two step-great-grandchildren, Kaeden and Brooklynn; three brothers, Harvey (Dorothy) Leeper, Robert (Mary) Leeper, Larry (Ruth) Leeper, all of Portage, Ind.; one sister, Delores Rich of Dallas, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Gene, Glenn, and Lee Leeper. Robert O. Widdel, 84, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away early Saturday morning, Feb. 20, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. He was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Crown Point, Ind., a son of the late Otto Martin and Cora Louise (Blume) Widdel. Bob had resided in Sturgis since 1945 coming from Indiana. On Oct. 19, 1947, he married Betty Templin in Sturgis. Bob had owned and operated Central Meat Market in Sturgis for over 50 years until his retirement in 2002. He was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis where he had served as an usher for many years and had also served on numerous church boards and committees. He enjoyed playing golf, and cards and being outdoors mowing grass and cutting wood. He truly loved his home on the lake where his friends and the friends of his son, daughter and grandchildren were always welcome. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 62 years, Betty; one daughter, Sue (Clint) Rangler of Sturgis; daughter-in-law, Vickie Widdel of Sturgis; granddaughter, Kara (Rob) Falkenstein of Sturgis; great-grandchildren, Seth Falkenstein and Hannah Falkenstein; one sister, Florence (Bob) Waggoner of DeMotte, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Widdel; one grandson, Joel Robert Widdel; one brother, Donald Widdel; and three sisters, Alice Monfort, Lora Eckhoff and Ruth Schultz. Robert S. Fennell, age 81, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, 2010, at his home following a hard fought battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Sturgis, Mich., a son to the late Frank and Alma (Adams) Fennell. Bob was a lifelong resident of Sturgis. On May 28, 1952, he married Phyllis Coombs in Sturgis. He was a dedicated employee of G.F. Business Forms in Sturgis for 25 years until the business closed. He retired from Rood Industries also in Sturgis. He enjoyed playing Euchre, yard work and flower and vegetable gardening and was one to never pass up a bowl of ice cream. In 1990 he received the Sturgis Exchange Club Keep Sturgis Beautiful Award. Bob had an extensive collection of steins and beer memorabilia and signs. He had a true appreciation for animals and enjoyed watching birds and always had pets in his home. Mr. Fennell’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Hospice of Sturgis for the outstanding care that Bob received and the support that they also received. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 57, Phyllis; one daughter, Judy (Charles) Benton of Colon; one grandson, Brian Robert Benton of Colon; three step-grandchildren, his Poodle Tinkerbell; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister,  Peggy Gordon; and one brother, Fredrick Fennell. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. Sharon Ruth Williams, of Brentwood, Tenn., formerly of Hillsdale, Mich. and Oldsmar, Fla., passed away Feb 9, 2010, at the Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. Sharon spent much of her life working for and supporting the family business (Hillsdale Market House). She loved golf and playing bridge with her friends. Sharon’s kind and generous spirit was evident to everyone. She enjoyed volunteering for charities including the Salvation Army. Sharon was active with the Women Commissioners for Hillsdale College and helped raise funds for scholarships through their annual rummage sale. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Ruth Pearson. She is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Philip O. Williams; four daughters, Rita Williams, Calif., Karan Boyd, Mich., Anita (Steve) Elliott, Tenn., and Mindi Meyer, Fla.; her brother, Robert (Tonya) Pearson and sister, Marilyn Jacobus (Tony) Flynn. She has nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Cremation services took place in Brentwood, Tenn. and a memorial service will be conducted at a later date in Hillsdale. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 160 E. Shirley J. Mallery, 84, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born May 20, 1925 in Cambria, the daughter of Ramon and Carrie (Moore) Franks. Shirley graduated from Osseo High School in 1945 and had worked at the A&P Store and Oslo Restaurant. She belonged to Bankers Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, the Hillsdale Art Guild, Hillsdale County Extension Club, and she was a leader in 4-H Clubs, Cub Scouts and Camp Fire Girls. Shirley also enjoyed painting, gardening, canning and reading. On Feb. 16, 1946, she married Robert T. Mallery, and he preceded her in death in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter (Erin Keefer). Survivors include: two daughters, Sandy (Charles) Keefer of Hillsdale and Ronda Hoover of Hillsdale; one son, Steve (Yvonne) Mallery of Vermont; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Bankers Baptist Church with Pastors Daniel Davis and Harvey Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Bankers Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the George White Funeral Home in Reading. Memorials are suggested to the Bankers Baptist Church.   |

Thelma Irene Nichols, age 70, of Alliance passed away at 3:53 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at her home. She was born Sept. 23, 1939, in Adrian, Mich., to Harlow Benjamin and Irene Ester (Dickerson) Anderson. Thelma was a 1957 graduate of Adrian High School in Michigan, and Atwater Church of the Nazarene was her church family. She loved to read, bake and send cards. Survivors include her husband, Lowell Edward Nichols, of Alliance, whom she married Feb. 17, 1957; sons, the Rev. Lynn (Penny) Nichols of Tampa, Fla., and Gary (Beth) Nichols of Jackson Twp.; daughters, Connie (Ron) Flack of Canton and Chris (Rev. Rob) Merki of Thurmont, Md.; mother, Irene E. Anderson of Hudson, Mich.; sister, Jeannine (Phil) Folkert of Hudson, Mich.; sister-in-law, Kathy Anderson of Hudson, Mich.;  brothers, James (Martha) H. Anderson of Hudson, Mich., Roger A. (Sue) Anderson of St. Johns, Mich., the Rev. Norm (Bonnie) Anderson of Hills, Iowa, and Randy H. Thomas John Adams, 79, of Midland, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at his home. Tom was born Dec. 20, 1930, in Lansing, to the late Henry and Agnes M. (Zarembo) Adams. He attended Lansing schools and graduated from DeVry Technical Institute with a degree in electronics. He served in the United States Air Force for six years. Tom was employed by the Burroughs Corporation as a computer systems engineer. Later he worked as a computer systems analyst at The Dow Chemical Company. He retired in 1988. His favorite retirement activities were spending time with his grandchildren, playing golf and watching the Berryhilll American Legion baseball team. |

Schmidt, 49, a resident of West Chicago, Ill., and a resident of Traverse City from 1982-1984, was called to her heavenly home Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, surrounded by family and friends. She was born Sept, 10, 1960, in Rockford, Ill., to Clifford and Freda Kinkade.While living in Traverse City Cathy worked for Dr. Arnold Sarya and attended Faith Reformed Church. Upon relocating to Illinois, she worked for Central DuPage Orthodontics for many years. Cathy was a member of College Church in Wheaton, where she served as an adult leader with the High School youth group and mentored many students who loved and adored her. She was a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a huge water sports enthusiast, enjoying time on Wonder Lake with her family. Cathy was an energetic person with a wonderful sense of humor and was passionate about her children and the gospel.She leaves behind her husband of 28 years, Greg; her two children, Wesley and Hope; her sisters, Karolyn (Daniel) Kentner, and Connie (Louis) Tisovec; many extended family members and very dear friends.She was preceded in death by her parents.A visitation will be held today, Feb. 22, 2010, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at College Church in Wheaton, Washington and Seminary Aves. in Wheaton, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010. Vivian Gertrude Lewis, 104, formerly of Allen, passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at Drews Place in Hillsdale.  She was born Jan. 11, 1906 near Celina, Ohio to John and Mary (Dine) Raudabaugh.  She was married July 1, 1934 to Wayne Leslie Lewis, he preceded her in death Jan. 18, 1993. Vivian graduated from Celina High School and The Ohio State University in 1928.  Prior to her marriage she was a teacher in Troy, Ohio.  After a move to Michigan (first Girard and then Jonesville in 1941) and child rearing, she resumed teaching in Litchfield and Jonesville.  She retired from teaching in 1968 after a career of 20 years.  In addition, Vivian was an active partner with Wayne on the farm.  She was a life long ardent Buckeye fan, enjoyed traveling with Wayne, and attended many school/athletic events supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Vivian was an active member of the Jonesville United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Roger (Norma) Lewis of Jonesville and Doug (Carol) Lewis of Cary, North Carolina; two daughters, Mary Jo (Jerry) Godfrey of Hudson and Carol (Jim) Helmer of Petoskey;  14 beloved grandchildren, Becky (Mike) Sprow, Dave (Cindy) Godfrey, Nancy (Steve) Eshelman, Shari (Tom) Kline, Bruce (Jennie) Lewis, Pam (Deric) Righter, Steve (Nina) Helmer, Tom (Sandy) Helmer, Dave (Beth) Helmer, Brian Lewis, Matt (Jenny) Lewis, Mike (Jenny) Lewis, Brandyn Lewis and Chaitra Lewis; 30 great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren and sister-in-law, Julianna Raudabaugh. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wayne; three brothers, Duard, Gerald and Robert; two sisters, Beatrice and Rhea; grandson, Greg and great-grandson, Tyler. William Christian Polkow, 80, died Feb. 15, 2010 in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was born March 12, 1929 in Detroit to Margaret and August Christian Polkow. He graduated from General Motors Institute in Flint with a master’s in engineering. He was an executive for General Electric for many years, lived in Kuwait while he ran Kirby Building Systems, was an engineer consultant in China and during his retirement co-founded Innovative Scuba Concepts, currently owned by his two sons. He married the former Eileen Parker, his true love, and they have been happily married for 59 years. He will be missed dearly by his devoted wife; three loving sons, Steve Polkow, Gary Polkow, and Jon Polkow; two daughters-in-law, Yvonne Polkow and Sheila Polkow; five wonderful grandchildren, Senora Polkow, Ferron Polkow, Kael Polkow, Dylan Polkow and Michael Polkow. His oldest brother, Jim Polkow, lives in Tucson, Ariz. and his younger brother, Bob Polkow, preceded him in death. Bill is fondly remembered as a devoted family man. His wife and sons were his most valued treasures and the most important part of his life. He was a kind and loving man and took great pleasure in his grandchildren and loved his family unconditionally. William Ralph Bigger, age 77, of Howe, Ind., passed away Monday evening, Feb. 15, 2010, at the Parkview LaGrange Hospital in LaGrange, Ind. He was born Feb. 24, 1932, in Moline, Ill., a son to Floyd and Josephine Bigger. Bill had resided in Olney, Texas for 27 years and returned to the Sturgis and Howe area in 1988. On Aug 23, 1974, he married to Delores M. Chamberlain in Vernon, Texas. She died March 23, 2004. On Feb. 22, 2008, he married Evelyn (Cross) Persing in Centreville. Bill was a truck driver by trade, a job he truly enjoyed. He was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He loved his teacup Chihuahua Sassy also known as “Killer.” He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn; step-daughter, Jan Taylor of Olney, Texas; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; two sisters, Betty Jo and Beatrice; and two brothers, James and Everett. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of William Bigger will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. The Rev. Michael Wicks of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis will officiate. Full Military honors will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Marcellus Cemetery in Marcellus.
