John Samuel Crook John Samuel Crook "Jack", age 89, of Harrison Township, passed away Saturday morning, February 6, 2010 in his home after a short battle with cancer. He was born on April 19, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan, a son of the late John Nelson and Pearl (Shearsmith) Crook. On February 22, 1945, he was united in marriage with Fay J. Phillips in Royal Oak, Michigan. The couple have lived at their present address since 1947. Jack served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II on the U.S.S. Leonard Wood and on the destroyer escort the U.S.S. Rickets. After the war, he acted as Lightkeeper at Harsen's Island Lighthouse for a number of years before his honorable discharge in 1947. Jack retired from a career as an electrical journeyman. For most of his electrical career, he worked for the Detroit Board of Education. He was a longtime member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local No. 58. Mr. Crook is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fay; and two daughters, Pamela (Patrick) Reid and Linda (James) Zillich; grandchildren, John David, James William and Kimberly Crook, Melissa Colangelo, Keri Ahrens, Jeffrey Steiber, Theodore, Gregory and Robert Zillich; and five great-grandchildren. Jack was predeceased by a son, John William Crook; and a granddaughter, Donna Crook. The visiting hours are on Monday from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Will and Schwarzkoff Funeral Home, 233 Northbound Gratiot Avenue, Mount Clemens. Luther Avera Luther "Wayne" Avera, area resident for 50 years, died February 6, 2010 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. He was born March 6, 1935 in Quitman, Mississippi. Mr. Avera was an air traffic controller at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, and had also worked as a base operations dispatcher. He was a member of the American Legion, and Cross Point Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter, loved the outdoors, loved spending time at his cabin up north with family, and lived his life to the fullest. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Grace (Ernest) Allor, Julie (Brian) Quinn, Susan (Tony) Fortuna; grandchildren, April, Joe, Melissa, Ashley, Andrea, Lauren, Chelsea; great-grandchildren, Josh and Hailey; and siblings, Malyn (the late Robert Earl) Speed, Ina Jewel (James) Davidson, Wiley (Janelle) Avera and Merita (David) Jones. Mary Louise Somsel, 62, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  She was born Feb. 28, 1947 in Cambria Township, to Lorain and June (Keiser) Farrell.  She was formerly married to John Bowman in 1963.  On July 8, 1977, she married Carl Somsel and he survives. Mary was a member of the Hillsdale City Church.  She attended Hillsdale High School.  Mary enjoyed her grandchildren, family activities, camping and garage sales. Surviving besides her husband Carl are two children, Melinda Breault and Brian Bowman, both of Hillsdale; her mother, June Dull of Osseo; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Barb (Mike) Vernier of Coldwater and Sherry (Phil) Shaw of North Adams; two step-sons, Kevin and Scott; two half-sisters, Linda and Pat and a half-brother, Joe; and best friend Becky Hanning. She was preceded in death by her father, Lorain and step-father, Don Dull. Graveside memorial services for Mary Somsel will take place at a later date at the Morgan Cemetery in Hillsdale County.  There will be no visitation or calling hours at this time.  Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Melanie May Collins, 32, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday Jan. 23, 2010 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born July 25, 1977 in Coldwater. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1995 and was a substitute bus driver for Camden-Frontier Schools. Melanie received a medical assistant degree from Ross Medical School and was attending Kellogg Community College to become a registered nurse. She enjoyed cooking, music and dancing, had a wonderful sense of humor and an outgoing personality, and loved her family. On Oct. 23, 1999, she married John Collins and he survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Allison Marie Collins, Hillsdale; a son, Jared Michael Collins, Hillsdale; parents, Marion Leroy and Alice (Houtz) Stemen,  Allen; sister, Amy (Jack Church) Stemen, Homer; and a brother, Joshua (Sarah) Stemen, Quincy. She was preceded in death by two grandmothers and two grandfathers. Funeral services are at 1 pm. Thursday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Paul Pickell officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Township. Visitation is scheduled Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family. |

Mildred L. Bowman, age 91 of Addison, passed away on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. She was born on Oct. 13, 1918, in Medina Township to Curtis H. and Theresa (Dillion) McKibbin.  She married Maxwell J. Bowman on Jan. 16, 1938, in Addison, and he preceded her in death on June 14, 1974. Mildred graduated from Addison High School in 1937.  She operated the former Bowman’s Bakery in Addison from 1938-1940 and then she worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti.  She was a cook at Addison Hospital for 13 years, retiring in 1988.  She also was a homemaker all her life. Mildred was a member of the former Addison Methodist Church, member of the Addison Senior Citizens Center and the Carousel Club of Addison. Surviving are one son, Owen H. (Jane) Bowman of Addison, one daughter, Marlene (Paul) Gillespie of Dartown, Ohio, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one sister, Juanita Jennings of North Adams, nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell, one son, Dr, George E. Bowman, one daughter, Maxine Gerber and one brother, Charles McKibbin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Will Snyder officiating.  Burial will take place in Dibble Cemetery, Wheatland Township.  Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today. Minnie B. Olshove Minnie B. Olshove, age 82, of Warren died Friday, February 5, 2010 at her home. Minnie was born May 14, 1927 in Minden City, Michigan the daughter of the late Vincent and the late Mary (nee Stomach) Glaza. She worked for 29 years at C.M. Hall Lamp Company as an assembler. When not working, she enjoyed playing cards, doing needlepoint, and solving puzzles. Minnie was also a parishioner at St. Teresa of Avila - St. Dorothy Campus for 41 years. She is survived by her sons, Vince Olshove and Thomas (Cindy) Olshove; grandchildren, Nicholas Olshove and Michele (Matthew) Segar; and great-grandchildren, John, Pamela, and Adam. She is predeceased by her husband, Stanley. Visitation for Mrs. Olshove will be held Monday 3-9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Scripture Service at the D.S. Philip E. Kelly, age 80, of Coldwater, died on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at the Community Health Center in Coldwater. He was born June 11, 1929 in Coldwater to Joseph and Anna (Kolinsky) Kelly. He was a member of the National Guard and then worked as a painter most of his life with his brothers as Kelly Bros. Painting and later under the name Kelly’s Painting and Decorating. He always told a good story and was a gentle man. He loved flying and working on airplanes, and got his private pilot license in 1946. He enjoyed watching comedies, westerns and war movies and treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren and friends. He is survived by his wife Jane, who he married in 1973; four sons: Mike (Penny) Kelly, Scott (Kelly) Kelly, Brien (Danielle) Kelly, all of  Coldwater and Randy (Marlene) Kelly of Yukon, Okla.; four daughters: Sue (Larry) Smith and Phyllis (Dave) Good, both of Coldwater, Deb (Scott) Smith of South Haven and Karen (Joe) Martin of Union City; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law Betty Hartford of Coldwater; two sisters Martha Starich of Calif. and Bernice Kelly of Illinois, brother-in-law Harold McGriff of Calif., sister-in-law Barbara (Roland) Hadley of Tenn. and several nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial gathering at the First Baptist Church of Coldwater on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 6-8 p.m.  Donations can be made to CHC Foundation or the American Cancer Society in his memory. |

Richard Carmen Young, age 81, of Three Rivers, passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at the Howell Care Center, in Howell.  He was born on Sept. 7, 1928, in Vashti, N.D., a son of Ray and Mildred Young. Mr. Young had been a lifetime resident of this area.  He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He worked at a very young age for Huddleston Lumber Company and eventually retired as sales manager after 45 years.  He also worked at Camp Eberhart for 10 years following retirement, where he was known as “Uncle Dick”. Mr. Young was a life member of the Three Rivers Eagles, where he served as past president, and also the American Legion Hice-Shutes Post #170. He truly loved his family, friends,  and his two pets, Babies and Miss Bitzy. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving family, wife of 55 years, Joyce (Hull) Young of Three Rivers; two daughters, Patricia (John) Weatherwax, of Three Rivers and Judy (Jeff) Miller of Three Rivers; a son, Dennis (Kathy) Young of Three Rivers; a brother, Norris Young, of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren Katrina (Scott) Norman, Miranda (Todd) Sylvester, Nicole Young, Meghan (John) Negus, Joshua German, Steven Higgins, Richard (Shannon) Mathews, William and James Mathews; several great-grandchildren; three nieces; and a nephew. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hohner Funeral Home in Three Rivers. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Pastor Bob Anderson of the Three Rivers Church of the Nazarene officiating. He was born Jan. 3, 1934, in Coleman, the son of the late Waldo and Angie (Sheppard) Guisbert. Robert Guisbert married Joan Cappon Jan. 8, 1955, in Rochester, N.Y. He retired from IBM in 1988 after 25 years of service. Robert served with the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1964, and was a life member of VFW Post 4573 and the Disabled American Veterans. |

Robert Clifford Kline Sr., age 86, of Mendon, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Riverview Manor in Three Rivers, after a brief illness. He was born in Kalamazoo on March 13, 1923, a son of Otto D. and Ada Belle (Mumby) Kline.  Bob graduated from Mendon High School with the class of 1941, and was a Life Member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #137 in Mendon. On March 23, 1949, he married Louise Anderson in Pontiac. She died in 1994.  Bob engaged in general farming for 12 years and was a heavy equipment operator for more than 35 years and was a member of Operating Engineers Local 324. He enjoyed fishing in his spare time.  On Jan. 17, 2000, Bob married Genevieve (Howes) Reed in Mendon.  She survives, along with two sons, Michael Kline of Three Rivers and Robert Kline Jr. of Wadell, Ariz.;  and three grandsons, Jason Kline, Brian Kline, and Michael Kline. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Maurice Kline Sr. In keeping with his wishes, cremation has been conducted. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mendon United Methodist Church, with Pastor Ward Pierce officiating, followed by a gathering in the social room of the church.  A private interment will be held later in Mendon Cemetery. Roger D. Eubanks, 87, of Reading Township, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at his home.  He was born Feb. 8, 1922 to Max and Connie Eubanks. He was married Jan. 1, 1948, to Rosemary Marazon and she survives. Roger was a CPA for Konopak and Dalton, and retired as an executive vice president, from People Savings & Loan in Toledo.  After taking a few years off, he accepted another savings and loan position with Peoples Savings & Loan in Temperance.  After retirement he purchased a laundromat in Jonesville and later opened Eubanks & Son Accounting Service, also in Jonesville. Surviving besides his wife Rosemary are two children, Connie (Dieter) Puska of Carmel, Ind. and Alan Eubanks of Louisiana; three grandchildren, Alysa, Josh and Cassie also survive. Vincent H. Counterman, 69, of Portage, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 30, 2010, at his residence. Vince was born April 14, 1940, in Paw Paw the son of Henry “Hank” and Marie (Oddi) Counterman. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Navy. A graduate of Paw Paw H.S., Vince enjoyed playing all sports, especially track. In his early years he spent many hours working on the family fruit farm. The past 30 years Vince self-published a weekly newspaper in Charlotte, N.C. and Kalamazoo, most recently The Grapevine Weekly in Kalamazoo. He attended Centerpoint Church and enjoyed gardening, coffee with his friends, and golf. Vince was preceded in death by his former wife Shirley. On August 2, 1997, he was united in marriage to his loving wife, Lavonne, who survives and she cherished his love and devotion. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ft. Custer National Cemetery (meet in assembly area at 10:50 a.m.). A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Centerpoint Church, 2345 N. 10th Street with Pastor Dar VanderWal officiating. Friends may meet the family Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick. Viola “Vi” C. LaForte, age 86, of Sturgis, passed away Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at Miller’s Merry Manor in LaGrange, Ind. She was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Detroit, a daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Teschke) Kastl. On Sept. 4, 1943, she married Russell LaForte in Detroit. They moved to Sturgis in 1944. She had been employed by the Kirsch Company for 15 years, was office manager for Dr. Earl Millett for a few years and worked at Sturgis Savings and Loan for many years. Vi was a member of the Lady Elks and enjoyed playing cards and had belonged to both euchre and bridge clubs. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, spending time at Klinger and Omena lakes with friends and family, and was a talented crossword player. Surviving are her husband, Russell; three daughters, JoAnn (Tom) Werner of West Lafayette, Ind., Bonnie (Duncan) Sargent of Slippery Rock, Pa., and Nancy Walton of Ada; six grandchildren, Laura, Lisa, Michael, Dana, Christopher, and Sarah; nine great-grandchildren; a sister; four brothers; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and two sisters. The family will receive friends and relatives from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Hackman Family Funeral Home Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis.      A memorial service celebrating the life of Vi LaForte will be held immediately following the visitation at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with The Rev. Bob Keim of  First United Methodist Church officiating. A private interment will take place in Oak Lawn Cemetery at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Vivian Pukey (Yaek) Vivian Pukey (Yaek), age 84, a resident of Roseville, life's journey ended and her eternal life began on February 2, 2010. She died with her husband and family by her side in Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. She was born on June 2, 1925, in Detroit, the daughter of Joseph and Magdelena (Gryszkiewicz) Kunicki. Vivian received her nursing degree from St. Clair County Community College. Her nursing career was spent at St. Joseph Hospital where her joyful and caring disposition was infectious to her patients, as she would often sing to them to cheer them up and ease their pain. She married Johnny Pukey in 1990 and within the year retired. They both loved dancing and spent summer weekends going to polka festivals. She loved to travel around the world with her family. Her other interests included playing the accordion and organ, crossword puzzles, scrabble, reading, bingo and daily socializing with her friends at McDonalds. Vivian was deeply religious and a devout Catholic. She attended Mass regularly at St. Donald's Parish. She is survived by her husband, Johnny; sister, Valentina Kielbasa; daughter, Laurie Kuschel and son, Larry Yaek; stepdaughter, Pam (Richard) Lobstein; three granddaughters; two step-grandsons and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William Kisielewicz and Stanley Kunicki; sister, Anna Herpel; son-in-law, Bernie Kuschel. Visitation Sunday, 2-6 p.m. in the L.C. Friederichs & Son Funeral Home, St. Clair with Rosary at 5 pm. Instate Monday at St. Phillip Neri Church, Columbus, Mich. from 9:30 a.m. until Mass at 10 a.m. Burial in St. Phillip Cemetery. Memorials to the American Heart Association. |

He was born on Aug. 19, 1944, in Bucyrus, Ohio, to the late Dana F. and Vera A. (Putzke) Campbell. He moved to Midland in 1951. Warren graduated from Midland High School in 1963. |
