Al Kron Al Kron, age 74, died February 21, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Al was a retired General Motors mechanical engineer of 35 years. After retirement, he became a successful entrepreneur starting Party Tops and owning two car washes. He enjoyed his many friends and family and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jeanette (Crump); children, Kevin (Patricia), Keith (Laura), Karen (Jeff) Yanssens; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey, Janelle, Emily, Jessica, Rachel, Elena, Allison, and Michael. He is also survived by his brother Walter. Al was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and most of all, mentor. He will be missed by all. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Germaine Church in St. Clair Shores, February 26, 2010, at 10 a.m. followed by a luncheon. Contributions can be made to Solanus Casey Center or Our Lady of Hope Parish. |

Doris T. Langwell, 87, of Coldwater, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010 at Country Meadows Adult Foster Care in Montgomery. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater with Rev. Fr. Daniel Doctor officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010 from 2-7 p.m., with the Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Doris was born Jan. 4, 1923 in Chippewa Falls, Wisc. to Bernard and Eva (Brazeau) Dressel. She married Wendell Langwell on July 28, 1943 in Tacoma, Wash. Doris graduated from Chippewa Hills High School in Wisconsin in 1941 before coming to Branch County, where she has spent most of her life. She was school secretary for St. Charles, Franklin Elementary and Legg Middle Schools for over 20 years, retiring in the early 90’s. Doris was an active member of St. Charles Church, where she belonged to the Altar Rosary Society and Ladies Guild. She ran bingo and helped with the church bookkeeping for many years and also organized youth groups. Mrs. Langwell was very active in the community, serving on the boards for Big Brother/ Big Sisters, the Community Action Agency, Branch Co. Jury and the Commission on Aging and was instrumental in the development of the Circle of Care Program in Branch Co. Doris was a staunch Democrat, active in the party and serving food at the Fair Eat Stand for over 20 years. She received an award from Gov. Granholm for her hard work and dedication and was invited to attend the Clinton Inauguration in 1993. Doris was a nature enthusiast who loved the outdoors, flower arranging and belonged to the Coldwater Garden Club. She enjoyed collecting antiques, traveling, garage sales, tole painting and embroidery. Most of all, Doris loved to help others, acting as a foster parent to many children over the years. She was dedicated to her family and always extending a hand to someone in need. Doris is survived by her husband Wendell, her son Dennis (Johnna) Langwell of Clermont, Fla., her daughters Beverly Walton and Maria (Mark) Donner, all of Coldwater, her sister Bernice Green of Wisc., her grandchildren Dr. Foster Walton, Ginny Piatt, Brandon Walton, Kevin Donner, Corey Donner, Tess Donner, Jason Langwell, Ginger Lower, Michelle Tippman, Lindsey Langwell, Steve Hildebrand and ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Irvine and Gerald Dressel and her sisters Gladys Good, Frances Licht, Mary Brouillard, Cecile Martin, and Geraldine Peterson. Earl L. Whitmire, age 90, of Delta, Ohio, passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 22, 2010, at the University of Toledo Medical Center. He was born in Delta on Sept. 28, 1919, to the late Reuben Whitmire and Ethel (Saul) Whitmire. He was a 1939 graduate of Delta High School where he was proud to have played running back for the football team. Earl was a World War II Veteran, having served with the U.S Army Air Force. Earl was a member of the 460th Bomber Group where he was a gunner on the B-24 plane. On Oct. 9, 1943, he married Virginia Wiley and she survives. Earl entered the family milk business and was responsible for the hauling and delivery of the milk. He was a member of the Delta United Methodist Church, a 60-year member of the Delta American Legion Post #373 and Fulton Lodge #248 F.&A.M., where he was a 50-year member and served as a past Master. Earl was also a 60-year member of the Aetna Grange. Some of his fondest hobbies were riding mules and racing dogs, but most of all was coon hunting. Earl was also very proud of his time served with the American Legion “Staccatoes” drill team in the 1950s which won numerous state and national championships. In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by his children, Beverly (David) Seeburger of Adrian, Mich., Kenneth E. (Erna) Whitmire of Tampa, Fla., and Dennis Dean (Sue) Whitmire of Savannah, Ga.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Earl was preceded in death by his sisters, Nola Jean Spiess and Annabelle Hoffman, and brother-in-law, Kenneth M. Wiley. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at Barnes Funeral Chapel, 5825 St. Highway 109, Delta, with an American Legion Service at 7:30 p.m. immediately followed by a Masonic Service. A funeral service celebrating Earl’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Pastor Bill Bauman will be officiating. Esther Arlene Nissley, 67, of Burr Oak, Mich., passed away Friday Feb. 19, 2010, at her home. She was born Oct. 6, 1942, in Sturgis, Mich., a daughter of the late Edwin and Mary (Hochstedler) Chupp. Mrs. Nissley resided in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area her whole life. On June 12, 1966 she married Glenn Nissley at the Oak Grove Amish Mennonite Church in Centreville, Mich. She owned and operated with her husband Nissley Disposal in Burr Oak. She was a home maker and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Nissley was a member of the Rosewood Fellowship Church in Shipshewana, Ind. She enjoyed the outdoors and gardening and truly loved helping others. Her greatest joy was the times she was surrounded by her family especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Glenn;  two daughters, Elaine (Daryl) Chupp of Sturgis and Ellen (Nelson) Miller of Burr Oak; two sons, Galen (Gloria) Nissley of Millersburg, Ind., and Gary (Tina) Nissley of Shipshewana, Ind.; 15 grandchildren and expecting her 16th grandchild; one sister, Mary Ellen (John) Miller of Burr Oak; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two infant brothers, Alvin and Paul. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at the Calvary Chapel, 66969 N. Gene Alfred Scrogham, 61, of SR 120 Middlebury, Ind.,  was pronounced dead at 10:01 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at his residence, his death was unexpected and due to natural causes. He was born Jan. 18, 1949, in Elkhart, to Fred E. and Helen (Whittlinger) Scrogham. On May 5, 1973 he married Susan McDonald, they divorced Sept. 18, 1987. He then married Glenda Horne, and they later divorced. He was a 1967 graduate of Middlebury High School, served in the US Marine Corps from 1967 - 1971 during the Vietnam War, he was active in the Boy Scouts, Masonic Lodge in the Knights Templar, American Legion in the 40/8, Elks, Moose, VFW, the Catholic Church in the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include a son, Robert Gene (Chrissy) Scrogham of Middlebury, Ind.; and a grandson, Logan Scrogham. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a grandson, Matthews Robert Scrogham in 2006. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m.Tuesday at the Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday also at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m.  on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at the funeral home. Services will be conducted by the Chaplain of the American Legion Post # 210. Burial will be in Mack Cemetery, Middlebury with full military graveside services preformed by the American Legion Post # 210, Middlebury. Mrs. Gumieny was born July 27, 1922, in Filer Township, Mich. Mrs. Gumieny was a homemaker, who enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and spending time with her family. Nevarrow Black on June 15, 1974, and he survives. Jannie worked in the Andy Adams sale barn hay office for many years. She was a former member of the Moose Lodge, Eagles, American Legion and Pythian Sisters. Jannie was an avid bingo player and she enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Thorne.  Besides her husband, Nevarrow, Jannie is survived by a son, Aaron Black of Pittsford; grandson, Thorne Black of Homer; eight sisters, Diane (Gary) Howard, Kathy (Terry) Ragless and Becky Smith, all of Adrian; Robin (Doyle) Pike and Jennifer (Don) Thompson, both of Morenci; Dawn Smith of Ransom, Jo Anne (Ed) Frazier of West Unity, Ohio, and Tina Clement of Hudson; three brothers, Donald Brown Jr. of Stockbridge, Thomas (Melissa) Brown of Jonesville, and Dan Brown of Hillsdale; father- and mother-in-law, Herb (Yvonne) Black, and brother-in-law, Vandardis Black, both of Pittsford. He married Flora Jacuzzi on Jan. 11, 1953 and she preceded him in death in 1990. Joe retired from Jacuzzi Canada in 1980. He has been a resident of Hillsdale since 1992.  A proud member of the National Rifle Association, he also enjoyed woodworking and hunting. Joe will be greatly missed by many and especially his three daughters, Jo Ann (Marven) Blaha of Orangeville, Ontario, Canada; Janice (Richard) Jefferson of Oconomowoc, Wis., and Kathy (Dave) Tims of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; a son, Robert (Jody) Nicoletti of Brampton, Ontario, Canada; his companion of 18 years, Dolores Young of Hillsdale; a sister, Ella (Bill) Holt of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Ann (John) Null; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and the extended Young family. Kevin was a lifelong resident of Burr Oak and graduated from Burr Oak High School with the class of 1979. He had been employed by Burr Aluminum, Victor Screw Products and Tube Fabricators all in Burr Oak. He was attending the Celebration Community Church in Sturgis. Kevin enjoyed playing darts and collecting hats. He loved spending time and playing with his many nieces and nephews and babysat each one of them over the years. He is survived by his mother; Jackie Malone of Burr Oak; one brother, Ken (Suzanne) Malone of Sturgis; two sisters, Karen and Kelly (Dan) Fitzgerald of Constantine; 10 nieces and nephews, Michael, Daniel, Megan, Tiffany, Halen, Joey, Zack, Brady, Angie and Kieran; great-nieces and nephews, Kaden, Lane and Kenadie and his honorary siblings, Sue and Brian Winchester of Mendon and their daughter, Samantha. He was preceded in death by his father. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Leonard Wolfe, age 76, passed away Feb. 21, 2010, at home. He was born May 26, 1933, in Wyandotte, Mich., the son of Oscar and Esther (Knickerson) Wolfe. On Oct. 9, 1954, he married Rosemary Botkin. She survives. Leonard served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He retired from Holnam Inc. in Dundee. Leonard was the Mayor of Deerfield for 13 years. In addition to his wife, Rosemary, he is survived by his children, Fred (Donna) Wolfe of Deerfield, Mike Wolfe of Clinton and Pam (Tom) Gerber of Clinton; 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite (Robert) Boyce of Monroe and Eileen Gorr of Lambertville; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ralph and Donald “Bud”; and one sister, Dorothy.  Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. Doug Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Deerfield Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Deerfield American Legion. Marian M. Davenport, age 91, of Mendon, died Sunday Feb. 21, 2010, at Riverview Manor in Three Rivers.  She was born Jan 27, 1919, in Vicksburg, a daughter of John and Edith (Brockway) Scofield, and was a lifetime resident of the area.  She attended the Brady #5 School and graduated from Vicksburg High School.  Marian married Lester Davenport on Dec. 21, 1938, in Cassopolis.  They were later divorced.  Marian worked at National Carbon Coated and Trans-O-Gram in Sturgis; The Point Lunch in Leonidas; Research Molding and Voss Pharmacy in Mendon.  She was a member of the Leonidas Grange #266; the Pomona Grange; the State and National Grange; and the Michigan Fiddler’s Association. Marian is survived by three children, Rita Long of Colon, Jane Sanderson of Mendon, and Dan (Claudia) Davenport of Bronson;  nine grandchildren, Bob (Deb) Long, Cheryl Collins, Debbie (John) Smith, Doug (Marilyn) Sanderson, Deanna (Alan) Martin, Dan (Bambi) Sanderson, Jonathan Davenport, Angela Neubaur, and David Davenport;  11 great-grandchildren;  two great-great-grandchildren, Savanah Meyers and Cedric Berman; and a brother, Mahlon (Darlene) Scofield of Colon.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mabel Sells; a brother, Merton Scofield; and a grandson, David Sanderson. Marjorie J. Fisher married Dr. James S. Clapperton, II on May 3, 1947, in Saginaw. He died June 10, 1978. Marge assisted her husband with his medical practices in Fairgrove and then when they came to Coleman in 1950, until retiring in 1975. She spent 20 years summering in St. Ignace, working with her son, James, at the North Bay Inn and the Tradewinds Motel. |

Marla Jean (Colyer) Wilson of Blissfield slipped into eternal rest Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Toledo Hospital. Marla Jean was born on Sept. 21, 1937, to Forrest M. Colyer and Pauline M. (Hoenig) Colyer. She was a 1955 graduate of Blissfield High School and was very active in roller skating during high school, winning many medals. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Blissfield. She was employed by the former Home Canning Company and retired after 26 years with General Motors, where many of those years were spent at the Fisher Body Plant in Tecumseh. After retiring, Marla has enjoyed many lunches with her friends, spending time with her family and taking care of her yard and garden. The last four years she was blessed with her constant companion, Sasha, her special Shih Tzu. Marla was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Sheryl Lynne Wilson. She is survived by her son, Steven E. (Bethany) Wilson of Blissfield; brother, Sherwood “Joe” (Barb) Colyer of Toledo; sister, Judy (Colyer) Crist of Tecumseh; grandsons, Nathan (Aubrey) Wilson of Gaylord and Nicholas Wilson of Blissfield. She has many nieces and nephews that she truly loved. Funeral services for Marla Jean will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Blissfield with Pastor Paul Benjamin officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield. Ray “Tut” Hall, 78, of Coldwater passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. He was born on March 21, 1931, in Riga, the son of Clyde and Sylvia (Livingston) Hall. On March 24, 1951, in Morenci, he married Betty Simpkins, and she survives. Tut was a truck driver for many years, retiring from USF Holland Trucking in 1994. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 through 1953 during the Korean War. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, the Morenci American Legion Post #368 and the Morenci Eagles Aerie #1297. Tut enjoyed his grandchildren, NASCAR racing and fishing. Besides his wife, Betty, Tut is survived by a daughter, Jeanne Rae Dietrich of Morenci; three sons, Terry Hall of Bay City, Kevin (Laura) Hall of Morenci and Tracy Hall of Osseo; three grandchildren, Lenna (Pat) McCaskey, Brock (Kate) Dietrich and Jediah Hall; four great-grandchildren, Mia and Ella Dietrich and Camden and Beckett McCaskey; one sister, Wanda (Carl) Kruse of Morenci; one brother, Roy (Fern) Hall of Waldron; and special friends, Luella Rutan and family. Robert O. Widdel, 84, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away early Saturday morning, Feb. 20, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. He was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Crown Point, Ind., a son of the late Otto Martin and Cora Louise (Blume) Widdel. Bob had resided in Sturgis since 1945 coming from Indiana. On Oct. 19, 1947, he married Betty Templin in Sturgis. Bob had owned and operated Central Meat Market in Sturgis for over 50 years until his retirement in 2002. He was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis where he had served as an usher for many years and had also served on numerous church boards and committees. He enjoyed playing golf, and cards and being outdoors mowing grass and cutting wood. He truly loved his home on the lake where his friends and the friends of his son, daughter and grandchildren were always welcome. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 62 years, Betty; one daughter, Sue (Clint) Rangler of Sturgis; daughter-in-law, Vickie Widdel of Sturgis; granddaughter, Kara (Rob) Falkenstein of Sturgis; great-grandchildren, Seth Falkenstein and Hannah Falkenstein; one sister, Florence (Bob) Waggoner of DeMotte, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Widdel; one grandson, Joel Robert Widdel; one brother, Donald Widdel; and three sisters, Alice Monfort, Lora Eckhoff and Ruth Schultz. The family will receive friends from 4–8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, (269) 651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of Robert O. Widdel will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Sturgis. The Rev. Michael Klafehn and the Rev. Calvin Kolzow will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. Robert Robison Robert Robison, age 84, passed away Wednesday evening, February 17, 2010 at his home in Jupiter, Florida, after a courageous and diligent battle against cancer. His son, Bill Robison, preceded him in death. Mr. Robison, also affectionately known as 'Robbie' loved spending time with his family and friends. He will be most remembered for the unconditional support and love he gave to his family. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Ann; his daughter, Pamela Kramar, and her husband, Keith; his grandchildren, Bill, Chris, Ryan and Tara; and great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Jesse. Ronald C. Mesarosh Sr., age 65, of North Adams, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2010, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Hillsdale County. He was born June 19, 1944 in Detroit, the son of Adam Sr. and Francis (Moore) Mesarosh. He married Virginia Ann (Butler) Mesarosh on Sept. 17, 1966,  and she preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by three sons, Ronn (Denise) Mesarosh, Rodney Mesarosh and Brian (Missey) Mesarosh; one daughter, Gina Semmler; 12 grandchildren: Kendra, Colt, Andrea, Britt, Gretta, Grayson, Char, Pressly, Quade, Lennon, Kayle and Lincoln and two brothers, Adam, Jr. (Claudia) Mesarosh and Bruce (Michelle) Mesarosh.    Mr. Mesarosh served his country for six years through the National Guard. He worked at Hillsdale Tool for 26 years and retired to move on to start the Eden Alternative at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility which he considered to be one of his life’s greatest achievements.    A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Ronald C. Mesarosh Sr., will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale on Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. with Pastor Daniel E. Pann officiating. Interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home in Hillsdale. Ruby C. Jordan, age 92, of Adrian died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. She was born Feb. 18, 1918, in Weikle, W.Va., to Lundy and Lucie (McMillion) Miller. She was married to Carl Jordan on March 3, 1934, in Mt. Hope, W.Va. Ruby lived in Oak Hill, W.Va., for 34 years and then moved to Adrian where she has lived ever since. Ruby was a wonderful mother and loved dearly by all her children and will be sadly missed. She was a very kind, loving, and thoughtful neighbor and friend. She was a member of the Bethany Assembly of God Church and the 50-Plus Group at Bethany. She was former member of Bethel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was the past president of the Women’s Missionary Union. She also served as the past president of the Woman’s Christian Temperence Union. Ruby enjoyed gardening, flowers and writing letters. Ruby is survived by one son, Richard E. (Bonnie) Jordan of Onsted; three daughters, Norma Roe of Adrian, Rita Brown of Sand Creek and Lucie (James) McNeil of Adrian; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in October of 2000; three brothers, four sisters, one grandson, and one son-in-law, Roy Roe. Funeral services for Ruby will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. Ron Sparks officiating. Burial will be in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park, Adrian. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Shirley J. Mallery, 84, of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. She was born May 20, 1925 in Cambria, the daughter of Ramon and Carrie (Moore) Franks. Shirley graduated from Osseo High School in 1945 and had worked at the A&P Store and Oslo Restaurant. She belonged to Bankers Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, the Hillsdale Art Guild, Hillsdale County Extension Club, and she was a leader in 4-H Clubs, Cub Scouts and Camp Fire Girls. Shirley also enjoyed painting, gardening, canning and reading. On Feb. 16, 1946, she married Robert T. Mallery, and he preceded her in death in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one granddaughter (Erin Keefer). Survivors include: two daughters, Sandy (Charles) Keefer of Hillsdale and Ronda Hoover of Hillsdale; one son, Steve (Yvonne) Mallery of Vermont; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Bankers Baptist Church with Pastors Daniel Davis and Harvey Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in Bankers Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the George White Funeral Home in Reading. Memorials are suggested to the Bankers Baptist Church.   |

William Christian Polkow, 80, died Feb. 15, 2010 in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was born March 12, 1929 in Detroit to Margaret and August Christian Polkow. He graduated from General Motors Institute in Flint with a master’s in engineering. He was an executive for General Electric for many years, lived in Kuwait while he ran Kirby Building Systems, was an engineer consultant in China and during his retirement co-founded Innovative Scuba Concepts, currently owned by his two sons. He married the former Eileen Parker, his true love, and they have been happily married for 59 years. He will be missed dearly by his devoted wife; three loving sons, Steve Polkow, Gary Polkow, and Jon Polkow; two daughters-in-law, Yvonne Polkow and Sheila Polkow; five wonderful grandchildren, Senora Polkow, Ferron Polkow, Kael Polkow, Dylan Polkow and Michael Polkow. His oldest brother, Jim Polkow, lives in Tucson, Ariz. and his younger brother, Bob Polkow, preceded him in death. Bill is fondly remembered as a devoted family man. His wife and sons were his most valued treasures and the most important part of his life. He was a kind and loving man and took great pleasure in his grandchildren and loved his family unconditionally.
