Albert J. Habarth Albert J. Habarth, age 88, of New Baltimore passed away peacefully in the presence of family in Detroit on February 3, 2010. Born in Detroit on February 13, 1921, he was a member of St. Mary Queen of Creation parish in New Baltimore. He was predeceased by parents Albert and Elizabeth (Nuttle) Habarth. Beloved husband of Jeanne (Higgins) and father of James (Teri) Habarth and Mary (Michael) Taylor. Loving grandfather of Janice Habarth, Patricia (Peter) Meyers, Kathleen Habarth, James P. (Jesse) Habarth, Christina King and Nicki Herndon. Delighted great-grandfather of Alex, Hunter, Lauren, Kylie and Andrew. Albert graduated with Jeanne from Annunciation High School in 1939, served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and worked as a mechanical engineer for the Fisher Body Division of GM for 28 years. He fully restored an award-winning 1930 Model A Ford and in retirement became highly skilled at golf. An avid Detroit Tigers fan, he followed the team both in Detroit and in Lakeland, Fla. Also in retirement he designed the plot layout of the new section of the St. Mary Cemetery in New Baltimore. Visitation 2-9 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2010, with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service at Gendernalik Funeral Home, 35259 23 Mile Road, New Baltimore. Dolores L. Gillett Dolores Lorain Gillett, age 82, of Clinton Township, passed away Thursday at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, Clinton Township. She was born August 15, 1927, to Walter and Elsie (Flieschutt) Starkey in Mount Clemens. On September 1, 1945, Dolores was married to Kenneth Gillett in Mount Clemens. Mrs. Gillett was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Macomb. Edward Arthur Lemanski Edward Arthur Lemanski, age 23, a resident of Warren for his entire life, died suddenly Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at St. John Oakland Hospital in Madison Heights, Michigan. Eddie was born January 13, 1987, in Warren, Michigan the son of Edward Michael Lemanski and Michele (nee Hampton) Scott. He attended Westview Elementary and went on to attend Fitzgerald High School. He later achieved his medical assistant certificate from N.I.T. Eddie was the cherished son of Edward M. (Diane) Lemanski, and Michele Scott. He is the dear brother of Sarah, Andrew, Joshua, Justice; and loving grandson of Wanda and Arthur Gonzales, and Beverly (the late Edward) Lemanski. Edward J. Dworecki Edward J. Dworecki "Mr. Ed," age 91, died February 4, 2010, at his home in Eastpointe. He was born in Detroit on July 25, 1918. He retired in 1983 from U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 4 of Mount Clemens and the Knights of Columbus Cardinal Mercer and a proud Army Veteran. He enjoyed bowling, feeding the birds, playing pinochle, being in the St. Leonard's Breakfast Club and was a member of the Eastpointe Seniors. He also enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen, in October of 2002. He is survived by his daughter, Susan (Joe) Miller; granddaughter, Maryanne (Todd) Schmitz; great-grandchildren, Tommy, Maggie, John and Joe Schmitz; sister-in-law, Wanda Lenda; and brother, Harry Dworecki.. Harold A. Scripka Sr. Harold Anthony Scripka Sr., age 75, of Richmond, passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at his home after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Detroit on December 23, 1934, the son of the late Daniel and Virginia (Neubauer) Scripka. His marriage to Ruby Sloan was January 21, 1956, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Harold entered R.O.T.C. at Pershing High School, Detroit, and then served his country with the United States Marine Corps from 1952 thru 1962. At 18 years of age, Harold began work at Western Electric and retired in 1987 after 35 years of service. In 1972, he earned his private pilot's license and used it to work 17 years as a flight instructor at Big Beaver Airport, Troy, until his retirement in 1990. Harold was a parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Richmond. He loved photography and was an avid boatman and fisherman. Surviving in addition to Ruby, his wife of 54 years, are a son and daughter-in-law, Hal (Cheryl) Scripka of Ga.; two daughters, and a son-in-law, Cathy Janowski of Calif. and Sandy (Randy) Kania of Pinckney; eight grandchildren, Aaron, Amy, Ashley, Krystal, David, Will, Joseph and Jacob; two sisters, Dianne Stegall of Port Huron and Cheri Zisler of New Baltimore; a brother and sister-in-law, Dan (Pat) Scripka of Chesterfield. John T. Merz, age 55, of Tecumseh passed away Jan. 31, 2010. John was born June 9, 1954, in Tecumseh, Mich., the son of Albert and Jean (ParDee) Merz. He was a 1972 graduate of Tecumseh High School and received a Bachelor’s degree in 1977 from Western Michigan University. Throughout his life he was self employed, first as a Manufacturer Sales Rep and later owned and operated restaurants in North Carolina. In his youth, he played football, baseball and hockey. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and did organizational and promotional work for them. John was an avid fisherman and hunter, traveling the globe to do so. NASCAR was another passion of his. John is survived by his brother, Robert, and his wife, Karen Merz, of Brooklyn, and nephew, Nicolas, of Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. Lloyd Jewett officiating. Joseph M. Carkenord Joseph M. Carkenord, age 82, formerly of Mount Clemens, Mich., died January 31, 2010, in Alpharetta, Ga. Joseph was born on October 22, 1927, in Fort Wayne, Ind. to Marjorie and Reuben Carkenord. Unfortunately, Marjorie died shortly after Joseph's birth. He was lovingly cared for by Francis, initially as a caregiver and eventually as his stepmother. Joseph joined the U.S. Air Force and served for two years. Upon his discharge, he returned to college at Ball State University and completed his degree in education. He moved to Michigan accepting a teaching position in the L'Anse Creuse Public Schools, the beginning of a 40-year career serving the Mount Clemens area. In August 1958, Joseph married Joann Rose Simonsen, they enjoyed 46 years of marriage until her death in 2004. In 2001 the L'Anse Creuse district honored Joseph's work as a teacher, principal, school board member and community advocate, dedicating The Joseph M. Carkenord Elementary School, in Chesterfield, Mich. Joe cherished this recognition as his work in the service of children's education was one of his proudest accomplishments. Joseph is survived by his daughter, Barbara Carkenord of Roswell, Ga.; son, David Carkenord; daughter-in-law, Diane Stubbins; granddaughters, Bailey and Jamie of Farmville, Va. He is also survived by his brother, the Reverend David Carkenord of Waterloo, Ind. and his sister-in-law, Donna Carkenord, of Peoria, Ill. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Francis Hughes and brother, Robert "Bud" Carkenord. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter Chanel Catholic Church in Roswell, Ga. on February 11, 2010, at 7 p.m. In honor of Joseph's commitment to education, donations may be made to The L'Anse Creuse Foundation, 36727 Jefferson Ave., Harrison Township, MI 48045. Philip E. Kelly, age 80, of Coldwater, died on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at the Community Health Center in Coldwater. He was born June 11, 1929 in Coldwater to Joseph and Anna (Kolinsky) Kelly. He was a member of the National Guard and then worked as a painter most of his life with his brothers as Kelly Bros. Painting and later under the name Kelly’s Painting and Decorating. He always told a good story and was a gentle man. He loved flying and working on airplanes, and got his private pilot license in 1946. He enjoyed watching comedies, westerns and war movies and treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren and friends. He is survived by his wife Jane, who he married in 1973; four sons: Mike (Penny) Kelly, Scott (Kelly) Kelly, Brien (Danielle) Kelly, all of  Coldwater and Randy (Marlene) Kelly of Yukon, Okla.; four daughters: Sue (Larry) Smith and Phyllis (Dave) Good, both of Coldwater, Deb (Scott) Smith of South Haven and Karen (Joe) Martin of Union City; 21 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law Betty Hartford of Coldwater; two sisters Martha Starich of Calif. and Bernice Kelly of Illinois, brother-in-law Harold McGriff of Calif., sister-in-law Barbara (Roland) Hadley of Tenn. and several nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial gathering at the First Baptist Church of Coldwater on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 6-8 p.m.  Donations can be made to CHC Foundation or the American Cancer Society in his memory. |
