Rev. James P. Spink

Saturday, July 3, 2010 12:55 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Very Rev. James P. Spink, Ph.D. of Angola, Ind., went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. The son of Elizabeth Grady and Gale T. Spink, he was born in Ethan, S.D. on Nov. 6, 1933, the youngest of nine children. His twin died shortly after birth. The family moved to Harrisburg, Ore. in 1935 where he attended public school until he graduated from the eighth grade and entered seminary at Mt. Angel, Ore. He completed high school and college there with a major in philosophy and history. He entered St. Thomas Seminary in Kenmore, Wash. and was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in 1959. He served as associate pastor to St. John the Apostle Church in Oregon City, Ore. for nine years, then went to the Sorbonne University of Paris, Paris, France. He resigned from Roman Catholic Church in 1966, and returned to Notre Dame where he completed his doctoral in 1972. He started the Northeastern Community Mental Health Center, Kendallville, in 1970, and went into private practice in 1979 starting the Family Counseling Center. He earned a Masters Degree in Drug and Alcohol Addiction Counseling. He assisted Cameron Hospital in their inpatient treatment of alcoholic and drug addicts, training and consulting with their staff. In 1992, he started Community of Corrections facility in Auburn with the goal of rehabilitating addicts in a work-release environment. His Family Counseling Center began in 1979 after he resigned from Northeastern Center once it was in full operation in the four counties of Northeast Indiana. He had operated two offices with his staff in Auburn and Angola, seeing many local residents even if they couldn't pay for lack of insurance or employment! The Family Counseling Center will continue under the auspices of Dr. Judy Williams, Ph.D. and Associates. He completed a Diplomate in Psychopharmacology in 2000, in the hope that Indiana would legislate for properly trained psychologists to have prescribing privileges as some other states have done. In 1998, he met Archbishop Brian Carsten, better known to us as "Father Skip," the Metropolitan Archbishop of the American Orthodox Catholic Church. He joined this group and was soon made a Monsignor for his wisdom and experience in aiding so many people. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Emma Spink; a daughter, Bethann Appleman of Fort Wayne; two stepsons, Brandon (Beth) Wolf of San Antonio, Texas and Larry (Theresa) Wolf of Albion; four grandchildren whom he dearly loved and enjoyed, Timber and Dakota Wolf, both of Albion, Ind. and Emily and Ethan James Wolf, both of San Antonio, Texas; three brothers, Charlie, Dennis and Clarence Spink; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. He will be missed dearly. His legacy of helping others will continue with the Dr. James P. Spink Scholarship Fund. Donations to this fund can be sent to First Federal Bank at 212 E. Maumee St., Angola, Ind. Calling hours will be on Sunday, July 4, 2010 from 2-6 p.m. at Feller Funeral Home, 875 South Wayne Street in Waterloo, Ind. The funeral service will be Monday, July 5 at 1 p.m. at Feller Funeral Home.
