Archie H. Willoughby Lansing Age 61, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010. Archie was born December 18, 1948, in Lansing, Michigan the son of Jesse and Mittie (Sprat) Willoughby. A Lansing resident most of his life, Archie loved Michigan State University football and basketball. He enjoyed tennis, golfing, gardening and traveling. Archie was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dale Willoughby. He is survived by his and wife, Peggy; sons, Archie (Shelly) Willoughby II and Bryan Willoughby; brother, Carlton (Connie) Young; sisters, Toya Twitty, Jackie Willoughby and Donna Willoughby; grandchildren, Sierra, Nautica and Linda Willoughby; sister-in-law, Sharon Willoughby. Also surviving are many close aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Donald G. Feguer Dewitt Age 77, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010. Donald was born July 8, 1933 in Lansing, Michigan the son of Verne and Mildred (Ray) Feguer. Don has been a Lansing area resident all of his life. He proudly served in the Marines for 7 years. Don then came home and worked at Motor Wheel for 30 years retiring in 1989. A loving husband, father and grandfather will be dearly missed by all. He was preceded in death by his sister and two children. Don is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Garneth; 6 children, many grandchildren, 1 brother, 2 half brothers and 2 half sisters. Edna A. Gillan, 97, of Burr Oak,  passed away Thursday afternoon, July 15, 2010, at her home. She was born June 5, 1913,  in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Ernest and Angeline (Hunt-Gilbo) Beers. Edna had resided in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area nearly her whole life. On Oct. 23, 1930, she married Clarence E. “Jack” Gillan in LaGrange, Ind. He died Nov. 27, 1990. Edna was proud to be a farm wife and homemaker. She was a member of the Sturgis Missionary Church and enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting and reading and loved the game Aggravation. She was an avid reader and had a library in her home of more than 800 books. She will be remembered and admired by many for the active life she lived and her ability to live alone in her home until her death at the age of 97. She is survived by a brother, Chester “Chuck” Beers of Sturgis; nieces Lola (Floyd) Hodges of Sturgis, Lois Sites of Wolcottville, Ind., Marilyn “Mary Jo” Burton of Missouri, Suzanne (Robert) Jordan of LaGrange, Ind., Donna (Robert) Hagen of Sturgis, Lelah Palmer of Sturgis, Caryl Thompson of Florida and Colleen Perry of Sturgis; and many great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Lana Bell Beers, Myrtle Leiler and Gladys Parsons; and three brothers, Cecil Beers, Clarence Gilbo and Walter Gilbo. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the  Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Edna A. Gillan will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Dale Gerig will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. Gary Provo, age 69, of Cheboygan, died early Tuesday morning, June 29, 2010. He was born in Cheboygan on February 2, 1941, the son of Francis H. and Myrtle Irene (Trudeau) Provo. Gary was employed for over 35 years at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, retiring in 2005. Following his retirement, he went to work part-time for Louie’s Market. Gary liked to help other people; he was very active in his church, the 7th Day Adventist Church, and since his retirement loved to travel. Gary recently married the former Marge Matts, on May 2, 2010 in Cheboygan. He is survived by his wife, Marge; his son, Gary A. (Kara) Provo of Cheboygan; his granddaughter, Leah Jean Provo; his step-children, Nick (Michelle), Mike, Matt (Sky), Jason (Stacey), Desiree, Ashley, Amy and Amanda; 11 step-grandchildren; a brother, Dean Provo of Cheboygan; and sister, Theresa (Don) Parrott of Indian River. James A. Fairchild, 89, of Three Rivers, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, at Three Rivers Health. He was born April 6, 1921, on the family farm in Florence Township, a son of Ernest and Florence M. (Kelley) Fairchild. On May 20, 1948, he married Thelma Weber at the Centreville Presbyterian Church. Jim worked and operated the family farm until he retired in 1985. He also worked as a Three Rivers Hospital attendant. Jim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Three Rivers/Centreville, where he worked at one time or another on each board. He served on the Lockport Township Board  for 22 yrs, 13 as its treasurer; the Lockport-Fabius Park Fire Board  for 17 years; and the Agricultural Stabilization Committee for more than 20 years. Jim was a St. Joseph Farm Bureau lifetime member, and Junior Farm Bureau and St. Joseph County 4-H leader. Jim also served on the Gov. G. Mennon Williams Agricultural Advisory Board. Surviving Jim are his wife, Thelma Fairchild; daughters Carla Jean (Will) McDonald of Bennettsville,  S.C., and Louann (Lee) Bitely of Bitely; son Charles Fairchild of Sturgis; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister Lola Musser of Portage.   He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister Kathleen Fairchild. Relatives and friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Eley Funeral Home in Centreville, where religious services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Marilyn Schlimgen, First Congregational United Church of Christ, Constantine, officiating.   Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers. James Michael “Jim” Fitzstephens, age 72, of Mendon, died Thursday July 15, 2010 at his home.   He was born in Pontiac, Mich., on Dec. 11, 1937, the son of J. Edward and Mary (Phelan) Fitzstephens.   The family moved to Mendon  in 1952 where he attended Mendon High School, and for a time resided in Chicago.   He was married to Joyce Schmidt in 1959; they were later divorced.   While residing in Mendon Jim worked at Carl Green’s filling station in Mendon and for Ronningen Research & Development in Vicksburg.  Most recently he was a truck driver for Vanguard Industries and Forrest River Paper Company.   He was married to Victoria McMillan on April 1, 1983 in Kalamazoo.  She died on Nov. 7, 1984. Jim is survived by five sons, Michael Fitzstephens (Sandy) of Schoolcraft, Daniel of Mattawan, Timothy of Schoolcraft, Scott of Santa Barbara, Calif., and David of Berrien Springs;  a step-daughter, Michelle McMillan of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; a brother, Gerald Fitzstephens (Brenda) of Mumfordsville, Ky.; two sisters, Theresa Zmudka of Mendon, and Mary Ellen Cook (Charles) of Marcellus; and by several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and by two brothers, Thomas and Patrick. The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday July 21, 2010 at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. James R. (Jim) Woiderski, age 76, was born February 19, 1934 to Robert and Catherine (Elliott) Woiderski — the eldest of 5 children. He graduated from CHS in 1952 and was a short course graduate of MSU in 1955. He started work as a driver for Inverness Dairy in 1952, and became sales manager in 1953. Joe Frank Green, 77 “Joe, Daddy, Papa, Grandpa, Your Father, Old Man, The Educator, Green” of Onaway, Mich., died on June 28, 2010 at the age of 77. Joe was born on July 11, 1932, in Paducah, Kentucky, and later moved to Michigan with his family. He proudly served in the United States Army, 100th Tank Battalion, 1st Armored Division of Fort Hood, Texas and was a proud member of the Teamster’s who retired from Signal Delivery after 30+ years. He was an avid hunter, Civil War & history aficionado, who loved to travel and visit local casinos. In addition, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Kenneth B. “Sonny” Smith, 78, of Coldwater, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2010 at home, surrounded by family. He endured a long hard-fought battle with heart disease. Ken was born in Julesburg, Colo. Aug. 13, 1931 to Harry and Melvia (Morgan) Smith. Ken’s family moved to Coldwater from Nebraska when he was a child, remaining in the Jonesville, Quincy, Coldwater areas most of his life. He married the love of his life, Judy (Butler) Smith on June 20, 1953 in Coldwater and she survives.   Ken and his bride of 57 years brought three wonderful children into their life; two daughters, Melvia (Cookie) Blatter, Candis (Candy) Bauder and son Randy Smith. Ken was a professional truck driver for 47 years. He was an owner operator and he also drove for Acorn Building Components for 17 years, General Processing Co. for six years, McDonald Logging and Michigan Nebraska Trucking. He retired in 1993 as a Teamster from TNT Holland in Jackson. In addition to his trucking career, he was also a horse trainer. He had grown up with this talent and remained actively involved in the horse industry most of his life. As a young man, he had done it all, from raising, breeding, riding, breaking, contesting, rodeo, and later, racing horses. After retiring, he and his wife, Judy, spent winters in Florida breaking and training horses for the race track. Ken was one of the founders of para-mutual wagering on Quarter Horses in the State of Michigan. He held the offices of President and Vice-President of the Branch County Saddle Club, President and Vice-President of the Michigan Quarter Horse Racing Association as well as a Board member for several years.  He belonged to the Coldwater Lions Club, Quincy Masonic Lodge and was an active parent of children in the Branch County 4-H Club.   Following retirement in 1993, they moved into Trail Tree Village, and as one of the first residents, became the Resident Managers, a position they continued until 2005. Ken enjoyed fishing and hunting, along with his first and most prominent love — the horses. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who could always make him smile.   Survivors include his wife Judy Smith, of Coldwater, daughter Cookie (Allen) Blatter of Homer and Candy (Mark) Bauder of Sherwood; grandchildren Jake (Jennifer) Blatter of Homer, Rindi (Gary) Hoaglin of Wayland, Cpl. Daniel (Jennifer) Blatter of Oceanside, Calif., Randy Martin and Mark Bauder, Jr. of Sherwood; great-grandsons Trevor and Trenton Hoaglin and Colton and Kane Blatter; sisters Yvonne (Gus) Wright of Coldwater, Orla (Don) Wiltse of Coldwater and Helen Watson of Hillsdale; brothers Fred (Sharon) Watson of Hillsdale and Dale (Jackie) Smith of Allen, and several nieces, nephews and special friends.   Ken was preceded in death by his only son Randy Smith, a beautiful granddaughter Nikki Blatter, parents Harry and Melvia Smith, and a second mom, Betty Smith, brothers Kendall Smith and Allen Watson and a very special uncle and aunt, Robert and Olive McDonald. Visitation is scheduled Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Angel Rojas officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery, Quincy. Memorials are suggested to the Community Health Center of Branch County Hospice Services.   |

Lillian M. Swihart, 78, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday morning, July 11, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Aug. 18, 1931, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Clarence and Lucile (Berry) Walters. Lillian was a lifelong Sturgis-area resident and a graduate of Brighton High School in Brighton, Ind., with the class of 1950. On Oct. 5, 1952, she married Melvin K. Stukey. This marriage ended in divorce, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2008. On Nov. 8, 1975, she was united in marriage with Stewart D. Swihart Sr. in Sturgis. He died Aug. 29, 2009. She had been employed by the First National Bank in Sturgis from 1971 until her retirement in 1990. Prior to that she had been employed by J.C. Penney in Sturgis from 1948-1965. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sturgis where she taught Sunday school from 1953-1963 and served as president of Lutherettes in 1963 and had also served as president of the Ladies Mission Circle. Lillian was always very active in the Sturgis community. Some of her involvements included holding the office of president with the Sturgis Band and Orchestra Parents Association in 1970, the Modern Mother’s Club, Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary 1994-1996, Sturgis Women’s Club, 1996-1998 and the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild. She served as treasurer of the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild and the Sturgis Women’s Club. She was a charter member of the Sturgis Hospital Popcorn Guild. Lillian was named Sturgis Citizen of the Year in 1998 and received the Sturgis Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds in 1995. Lillian was instrumental in the establishment of the Tree of Love at the Sturgis Hospital. She is survived by a daughter, Christine (Duane) Gonser of Sturgis; a son, Jon (Cara Davis) Stukey of Sturgis; four grandchildren, April (Galen) Geigley, Andrew Mathews, Steven Mathews and Tori Stukey; three great-grandchildren, Carina Geigley, Cierra Geigley and Jonathan Mathews; a sister, Donna (Frank) Krontz of Sturgis; a brother, Clarence (Elaine) Walters of Quincy; a stepson, Stew (Donna) Swihart II of Howe, Ind.; three step-grandchildren, Scott Swihart, Steven (Lisa) Swihart and Cathy (Kurt) Stevens; longtime close and caring friend, Joyce Shinn of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. Lois spent much of her life providing children with a safe and caring environment while their parents worked. In addition to caring for children, Lois enjoyed gardening, sewing and crafts. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Her greatest joy, though, was spending time with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all. Margaret (Marge) Frances Thiele, age 90, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at Sturgis Hospital. She was born July 14, 1919, in Chicago, a daughter of the late Anthony L. and Margaret (Miller) Schuster. Marge started her career in Chicago, working as a secretary in an advertising agency. There, she met Frederic W. Thiele Sr. They were married in 1941. During the early 1940s she was stationed with her husband on U.S. Army assignments in St. Louis, Seattle, Yokohama, Japan, and Fort Sheridan, Ill.  In 1942, they made Brookside Farm, Colon, their permanent home. In 1984, Marge moved to Sturgis. While living in Colon, she was an active member of the Colon Garden Club, the Colon library board, local school PTA’s, and was a founding member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church. Marge enjoyed gatherings, gardening, oil painting, traveling and volunteer work for her church, the St. Joseph County Council on Aging and the Pregnancy Crisis Line. While a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church for the past 25 years, she had been very active in the altar society, Holy Angels Seniors and prayer circles. She enjoyed 20 years of traveling that took her all over the world: Israel, Russia, Egypt, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Ireland and all throughout the British Isles.  Her painting also brought her much joy. She not only painted, but also attended many art classes, and exhibited her art in shows at the Sturges Young Auditorium. She was married to Frederic William Thiele Sr. for 34 years. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1975. Surviving Marge are her children, Carolyn (Kenneth) Hall of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Anne (Richard) Messner of Sturgis; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Jane (Thiele) Pinder of Conifer, Colo.; a goddaughter, Margaret (George) Dinklenburg of Libertyville, Ill.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Mark) Knudsen of Rockport, Mass., Stephanie (Benjamin) Bolton of Sautee, Ga., Anthony (Kate) Messner of Sturgis, Frederic (Brianne) Thiele of Dusseldorf, Germany, and Michael Pinder of Conifer; great-grandchildren Kai and Masha Knudsen, Adelyn, Clayton, and Aubrey Bolton, and Aiden and Giselle Thiele. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Frederic William Thiele Jr.; father and mother-in-law, Victor and Ida Thiele; and three sisters, Dolores (LeRoy) Scheffner, Lucille Schuster and Rosemary Schuster. The family will receive friends and relatives from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Hackman Family Funeral Home Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis.   A Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Margaret F. In November 1994, Marion and Richard moved to Topinabee where they have been since. Marion loved to cook. She enjoyed music being surrounded by her family. She attended the Berean Bible Church and CURVES.   Mase, a 1960 graduate of Onaway High School, worked for the Michigan State Department of Highway and for Cheboygan Memorial Hospital in the maintenance department. His passion and talent for fishing took him to Grand Marais in the summers and his winters were spent in Tower carving and painting decoys, which are admired by many. His kind heart and generosity will be missed by all. Mase is survived by his four children, Beth (Brian) Flynn, Edward (Barb) Mason, Lynda (Al) Hererra and Patrick (Sharla) Mason. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Sam, Nick, Shelby, Faith, Katie and Scarlett. He will be sadly missed by his dear companion, Tess Burfield, and his close friend and cousin, Lawrence Veihl. Mary Etta Whaley, 81, lifelong resident of Millersburg, passed away July 4, 2010 at Tendercare Health Center in Rogers City. Whaley was born August 18, 1928 in Onaway, Mich., the daughter of Herbert and Pearl (Whittaker) Stock. She was married to Homer Whaley on November 5, 1947 in Onaway. Mary Etta was a homemaker and farmer. She also worked outside of the home for Circuit Control and High-Q until 1990, when she retired. Her hobbies included fishing, gardening, sewing and horseback riding. She was an animal lover. She also enjoyed being a 4-H leader for many years. In 1977, she moved to Yuma, Ariz.  Mary Jane was a member of the United Church of God in Yuma. Dominique Marie (Saunders) Roberts, 6-day-old infant daughter of Casey M. Saunders and Michael J. Roberts, of Quincy, precious angel, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010 at Motts Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.  She was born June 29, 2010 in Battle Creek. In addition to her parents, she is also survived by one sister, Amber Zabonick of Quincy; one brother, Travis Newton of Quincy; maternal grandparents, Patricia (Daniel) Gilbert of Quincy and Scott (Shelly) Saunders of Quincy; maternal great-grandparents, Charlene (Ralph) Burch of New Port Richey, Fla. and Carol (Lewis) Saunders of Quincy and paternal grandmother, Carolyn Roberts of Georgia. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Carl T. Travis and James Roberts. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy.  Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Frank Snyder officiating.  Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Quincy.   Memorials to the family would be appreciated.   |

Edith M. Bernath, 100, longtime Reading resident, passed away Wednesday July 14, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  She was born in Amboy Township on Nov. 21, 1909, to William R. and Minnie E. (Haughey) Carothers.  Edith loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening and canning her produce.  She also helped others by taking in laundry and ironing. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Clifford Wells in 1941, and Harold Bernath in 1983. Survivors include two daughters, Mary J. Blythe, Reading and Dorotha M. Jenkins, Florida; a stepdaughter, Delores (Frank) Preston, Hillsdale; a son, Wesley (Betty) Wells, Coldwater; stepdaughter-in-law, Lenore Bernath, Marshall; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and her foster granddaughter, Lois Benjamin. She was also preceded in death by a son, Marlin Wells, stepson, Douglas Bernath, two grandchildren, four brothers and six sisters. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with the Rev. Alan Fenstermaker officiating.  Interment will follow in Knauss Cemetery, Kinderhook. Visitation is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Reading City Park are suggested.   |

Estelle M. Andenoro, 83, of Allen (formerly of Lakewood, Ohio), passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at Laurels of Coldwater. She was born Nov. 18, 1926 in Wheeling, W. Va. to Charles and Elizabeth (Mitchum) Hieronimus. She enjoyed casino games and playing bingo. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Cisco of Allen and Margaret Milligan of Ohio;  two sons, Sam Andenoro of Ohio and Guy Andenoro of Texas and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband (Guy Thomas Andenoro), and three grandchildren (Tracy Milligan, Michael Milligan, and Pvt.2 Guy Bremmer). At her request, cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, Diocese of Cleveland.  Memorials to the family would be appreciated. Frank E. Baker, 75, of Brooklyn, Mich., passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. He was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Detroit to Frank James and Ruth Catherine (Mowery) Baker. Frank was an avid hunter and fisherman and he truly loved the outdoors. He also spent time refinishing antiques.  For the last 20 years, Frank was a landscaper at a private estate in Utica, Mich., on which he developed and maintained a small exclusive golf course. Surviving are two siblings, Elsie Westlake of Brooklyn and James (Rena) Baker of Hillsdale, along with nine nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Vivian Brigle and Helen Moore, and a niece. Graveside memorial services for Frank Baker will be 3 p.m.Wednesday, at the King Lake Cemetery in Hillsdale with Pastor Robert Harvey officiating. There will be no visitation or calling hours. Genevieve M. Smoke, 88, of Hudson passed away Monday, July 12, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility surrounded by her family. She was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Dearborn to Fred and Sophia (Felhauer) Waldecker. She married Joseph Daniel “J.D.” Smoke on Aug. 14, 1954, in Angola, Ind. and he preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 2000. Genevieve was a lifelong Hillsdale County and Lenawee County area resident. She enjoyed cooking and family gatherings. Surviving Genevieve are four children, Barbara Zmich of Chicago, Galen (Lana) Smoke and Darlene (Jack) Elliott, all of Hudson, and Deborah Hephner of North Adams and one brother, William (Darlene) Waldecker of Hillsdale. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Dorothy Fredrick; brother, Fred Waldecker; granddaughter, Amanda Yeider and son-in-law, John Hephner. She was born April 20, 1938 in Detroit, the daughter of Michal and Stephanie (Yargus) Gacek. She is survived by one daughter, Angela (Wayne) Rose of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Mikey (Nicole) Rose of Jackson, Matthew Rose of Jonesville and Megan Rose of Jonesville; four great-grandchildren, Ariana, Kennedy and Trevor Kilpatrick and Michael Horton Ill.; four sisters, Geraldine (Mike) Kelsch of Farmington Hills, Bernadette Paes of Arizona, Stephanie (Bill) Mullen of New Boston and Roxanne (Chris) Stadtfeld of Erie and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Edward Hayes. Mrs. Porter was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Jonesville and she retired from Klein Tools after over 30 years of service. John George Kasotis, 59, of Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at the Laurels of Coldwater.  He was born Jan. 12, 1951 in Detroit to George and Lillian (Meyerhoefer) Kasotis. John was a jewelry designer and creator, and a former Ford Motor Company employee. He received a bachelors degree from the University of Michigan. Surviving is a son, Matthew J. Keith Edward Roberts, 75, of Jonesville, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, surrounded by family and friends at Drews Place Village Green in Hillsdale. He was born July 22, 1934, in Angola, Ind., to Edward and Harriett Roberts, who preceded him in death along with one sister, Ruth Batterson of Coldwater. He was married Nov. 26, 1960, to Jane C. Crider of Chicago and she preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 2009, after nearly 49 years of marriage. Surviving are two daughters, Renae (Tom) Stritzinger of Grand Rapids and Amy (Chris) Fast of Hillsdale; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Abigail, and Madeline Stritzinger and Bennett and Ridley Fast. Also surviving is one sister, Pearl “Puckie” Luck of Ionia. Keith grew up in Dearborn Heights and Coldwater, where he graduated from St. Charles Catholic High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tri-State University in 1960 after serving two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as an agent for AAA Insurance in Hillsdale until 1978 when he purchased the Thompson-Roberts Agency in Jonesville. He owned and operated the agency until his retirement in 2001. An avid golfer, boater, and gardener, Keith was also an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale for almost 50 years. He enjoyed annual weekends at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills. Along with his wife, he volunteered his time to historical building restoration projects and other community services. He also served as president of the Hillsdale Lions Club. A mass of Christian burial for Keith Edward Roberts will take place at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 9 with Fr. Thomas Butler officiating. Interment will follow at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. A memorial visitation honoring both Keith and Jane Roberts will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8 at VanHorn Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Our loving mother, Leota M. Grubbs, 84, of near Hillsdale, went to be with her Lord early Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Hillsdale Community Health Center, Hillsdale, following an illness. Born May 19, 1926, near Montpelier, Ohio, to Leona Irene Humbarger and Oliver Delbert Stantz, she was married to Carl V. Grubbs, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1971. A homemaker, Leota had been a Hillsdale County resident most of her adult life and is survived by her companion of 39 years, Frank Niner; two sons, William Ray (Dee) Grubbs, Cambridge, and Carlos Ray (Linda) Grubbs, Hillsdale; three daughters, Patricia Ann (Leo) Bernath, Montpelier, Bonnie Sue (Marlowe) Eidenier, Camden, and Sharon Kay (Rick) Hill Jr., Osseo; 17 grandchildren, several great- and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Stantz, Montpelier; and one sister, Lois (Paul) Clark, Bryan, Ohio. On Feb. 22, 1944, she married Thomas Girdham and he preceded her in death in 2002. Sally Lynn Wright, 57, of Jonesville, passed away suddenly Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born Oct. 28, 1952 in Hillsdale, to Enos and Maurine (Cronk) Todd. She was married Sept. 21, 1974, to Gerald “Jerry” Wright and he survives. Sally was a former employee of Jonesville Products and Klein Tool. She was a graduate of Quincy High School in 1970. Sally was an avid walker, enjoyed knitting and spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren. Sally was a “Comet fan” and she attended as many sporting events as possible. Whenever you came into contact with Sally, you could count on her having a smile on her face and being happy. Surviving, besides her husband Jerry, are five children, Kelly (Jason) Elder, Kammy (K.C.) Ladd, Kirk (Julie) Wright, Kristy (Jamie) Smith and Katy Wright; eight grandchildren, Warrick Elder, Shauna, Sterling and Sedric Ladd, Brady and Ariana Wright, Devlin and newborn baby Smith; eight sisters, Nancy (Richard) Horn of Litchfield, Betty Majewski of Allen, Geraldine Jeffery, Dorothy (Kenneth) Frick, Donna (Duane) Barnett, Susan (Paul) Shilling and Linda (Larry) Kriser, all of Quincy and Bonnie (C. She graduated from Bronson High School in 1941. She is survived by her husband of nearly 66 years, the Rev. Donald J. Johnson; sons, Terry (Dona) Johnson, LaPorte, Ind. and Gary (Jan) Johnson, Parma; daughters, Judy (Ron) Mueller, Hillsdale and Jan Johnson, Concord; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Shelba Jean Buehrer, Coldwater and brother, Floyd Lampman of Quincy. William E. Church, 93,  Lake LeAnn, passed away on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at his home. He was born on May 7, 1917 in Highland Park to Joseph B. and Mary K (Mott) Church. He married Valentine K. Kamke on Feb. 22, 1946, in Highland Park, and she preceded him in death on May 16, 1997. Bill was raised in Highland Park, before moving to Lake LeAnn in  1982. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1935.  He was employed at the former Heidrick Tool & Die Company in Oak Park, retiring on May 7, 1982.  Bill and his wife enjoyed driving around the area.  He also enjoyed tinkering around the house. Bill was known as “Two Socks”  as he always wore two different color socks all his life. Surviving are one daughter, Patricia A. Swanson of Lake LeAnn, two grandsons, Charles E. (Mila) Swanson of Jacksonville, N.C., Greg E. (Julie) Swanson of Royal Oak, five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Tara, Tessa, Stephanie and Patrick.  He was preceded in death by one brother,  Joseph G. (Daisy) Church, one sister, Mary K. (Ron) Vigus, one niece, Carolann and nephew, David. Patricia June Wortinger, age 56, of Three Rivers, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving family.   She was born in Three Rivers, Mich., on Jan. 24, 1954, the daughter of Robert J. and June A. (Lunger) Wessell. Patty graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1972.  She graduated with her L.P.N. from Glen Oaks Community College and began working for Three Rivers Hospital.  She later went to work for the Three Rivers Health Clinic and later for Dr. Don Schimnoski ,M.D., for over 25 years. On April 11, 1975, Patty married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Wortinger, and together they raised three beautiful daughters, Rebecca (Steven) Torres, Amanda (Glenn) Winters, and Jennifer (Joshua) Barner, all of Three Rivers; three grandchildren, A.J. Torres, Rory Winters, and Lizzie Torres; mother-in-law, Kathleen Wortinger and sister-in-law, Cinda Forbush, both of Three Rivers; uncle, Norman Wessell, of Centreville, Mich., and niece and nephew, Sheramy and Lee Forbush. Patty truly loved and was devoted to her family, husband, children and grandchildren.  She was very active in her early years in the Three Rivers Band Boosters and Girl Scouts. Patricia L. St. Amour, age 68, of Cheboygan, passed away Friday, June 25, 2010. She was born April 14, 1942 in Pontiac to Clarence and Margaret (Morrow) Hudak. In 1962, Patricia married William K. St. Amour, who preceded her in death in 2000. Patricia was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Huron Street Tabernacle. She was an avid baker, having won first place in an apple pie baking contest and had baked all of her children’s wedding cakes. Survivors include her six children, Jomarie (Ron Blaskowski) St. Amour, Kurt St. Amour, William (Penny) St. Amour, Therese (Kenneth) Warner, all of Cheboygan, Andrew (Holly) St. Amour of Wolverine and Alys-Marie Wilkinson of Cheboygan; one sister, Anna-Marie (David) McCormick of Cheboygan; two brothers, Russell (Dorothy) Hudak of Cheboygan and Joe (Ruth) Hudak of Detour; 25 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, William, Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Theresa Brasseur; and one brother, Eddie Hudak. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will take place on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Beaugrand Township Hall with Pastor Sam Agee officiating. Scott Alan Carpenter, 41, of Sturgis, died Sunday, July 4, 2010, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. He was born March 2, 1969, in Sturgis, a son of Douglas James and Linda Sue (Persing) Carpenter. He had been a Sturgis resident all his life. On Sept. 19, 2007, he married Rmentie Inez (Mendy) Keifer in Centreville. He was self-employed in construction, Hannapel Home Center in Sturgis, RV manufacturing at Coachman, and Morgan-Olsen of Sturgis for eight years. He enjoyed yard work and was known to be able to fix anything. Surviving are his very loving wife, Rmentie Inez Carpenter of Sturgis; two daughters, Kaila Riquelle Wright and Kirstan Kay Sawyer, both of White Pigeon; a son, Noah Ronald-Lee Rowe of Sturgis; a grandson, Seth Benjamine Wright; mother, Linda S. Carpenter, and father, Douglas J. Carpenter of Sturgis; a brother, Chad (Paula) Carpenter of Sturgis; two sisters, Danielle (David) Carpenter-Garl, Amanda (Daniel Keifer) Carpenter of Sturgis; loving mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dan and Jamie Hershberger of Sturgis; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousin and many friends. He was preceeded in death by his grandparents. Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon. Susan ‘Sue” Marie Gowen Hendricks, age 58, of Cobb County, Ga., passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010. She was born in Flint and had resided in Cobb County for the past 28 years. Sue had been employed at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for 28 years. During that time she attended college and earned her degree in nursing. She had been a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church for 28 years. Sue loved to read, visit and spoil her grandchildren and attend church and plays. Sue was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother. She was selfless and always ready to help a friend in need. She enjoyed writing and making cards for friends and family. Sue will be dearly missed. Psalm 37:5 “Depend on the Lord, trust him, and he will take care of you.” She is survived by one daughter, Lisa (Gordon) Mosley of Acworth, Ga.; one son, Tim (Amanda) Hendricks of Richmond Hill, Ga.; mother, Geraldine Zarza of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Larry Gowen; grandsons, Cole Hendricks and Jack Hendricks; nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Sadie. She was preceded in death by her father, Urban Gowen and stepfather, Ray Zarza. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Rev. Nathan Barnell will officiate. Walter E. Leist, age 93, of Carp Lake, passed away July 2, 2010 at his home on Lake Michigan. He was born September 27, 1916 in Boyne City to Edwin and Sylvia (Hurd) Leist. Walter was the firm foundation that his large extended family flourished from. He will be missed by all who were touched by his loving spirit. Bill retired from the Grand Rapids Public School System where he had been a building manager and was also a member of the First United Methodist Church. William J. Liski, age 78, of Adrian Twp. passed away July 17, 2010, at Lynwood Manor. He was born Feb. 23, 1932, in Kentucky, the son of Joseph Liski and Rose Liski Butts. William served his country in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Hydro Aluminum. William enjoyed camping, building radios and working with his hands.
