Bernice Mary Hayes East Lansing Bernice passed away July 24, 2010, at the age of 93. She was born May 4, 1917, in Beloit, Wisconsin, daughter of the late James and Flora (Wehrwein) Cranston and grew up on the Cranston family Centennial Farm. She earned her bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Lansing and volunteered for Ingham County Medical Auxiliary, as well as Mobile Meals and the Lansing Symphony. She was an avid golfer. Surviving are her children, Mary (Keith) Thomas of East Lansing, Thomas (Joan) Hayes of Troy, and Stuart (Ursula) Hayes of Sault St. Marie, ON; grandchildren, Justin, Kenneth, and Laura Thomas; sisters, Norma Schuele and Helen "Wootsie" (Philip) Simmonds; sixteen nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert E. Hayes, M.D.; sisters, Annis Brandon and Jeanette Haag. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church of Lansing, Molly Grove Chapel. She will lie-in-state at the church on Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Interment will take place at East Lawn Memory Gardens. She was born Nov. 7, 1925 in Adams County, Ind., to Frank and Emma (Zaugg) Hanni, and was the office manager for the Worden Brothers Trucking Company in Coldwater for 20 years. Beulah was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coldwater, and enjoyed playing the accordion and Euchre. On Nov. 20, 1947, she married her husband, Donald, and he preceded her in death in 2002. She is survived by son Alan (Juanita) Fegley of Quincy; sister Marilyn (Dave) Gerber of Decatur, Ind.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one great-grandson, Christian. There will be no visitation or services. He had lived in Sherwood all his life, and attended Colon Schools, where he was a member of the Colon wrestling team and also had participated in the school play. Brandon enjoyed playing video games, camping, fishing and playing paintball. Brandon is survived by his parents, Charles and Margaret Wagner of Sherwood; three brothers, Charles James Wagner Jr., Stephen Lee Wagner and Joshua Allen Wagner; four sisters, Nikita Sue Wagner, Courtney Lynn Wagner, Tiffany Marie Wagner and Kaitlyn Cheyenne Wagner, all of Sherwood; uncles and aunts Ronald Lee Wagner Jr. of Coldwater, Michelle Marie (Jeff) Jackson of Bronson, Connie Sue (Keith) Russell of Vicksburg, Daniel Collins of Sherwood and Henry Collins of Sherwood; nephews and nieces Charles James Wagner III, Christopher Allen Lee Wagner and Marie Ann Wagner; and many other relatives. Brian was a member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He was also a Special Olympics participant. Brian is survived by his parents, Robert and Susan Bierstetel; sister, Lisa (Charles) Wriska; brother, Eric (Margaret) Bierstetel; nephew, Jack Steven; niece, Madelyn Rita; many loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and special friend, Mark. Brian was preceded in death by his brother, Steven; niece, Kaela Sue; nephew, Charles Jonathan; grandparents, August and Leona Bierstetel, Paul and Joan Simon, and step grandfather, Ernest Thelen; very special cousin, Jeremy Paul Thelen; and very special uncle, Ed Pettit. Carl E. Caseman, age 69, of rural Burr Oak, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at his home. Carl was born Sept. 14, 1940, in Constantine, a son to the late Lloyd C. and Marian (Dimmick) Caseman. Carl graduated from Constantine High School with the class of 1958 and later served in the U.S. National Guard. On June 4, 1966, he married Patricia Lee Jensen which ended in divorce. He later married Carolyn Price which also ended in divorce. On Aug. 24, 1982, he married Ruth German in Centreville. Carl had lived most of his life in Constantine moving to his home on Long Lake in 1986. He had owned and operated Caseman Marathon Gas station in Constantine for four years.  He had been employed as a brick layer at BAC. Local 9 of Kalamazoo and also had been employed by Bracy and Jarhr of Quincy.  Carl was owner, president and C.E.O. of Caseman Motor Car Co. of Burr Oak. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Caseman of Burr Oak; daughter, Melissa Sandker of Sturgis; two step-sons, Ronald German Jr. of Key West, Fla., and Brian German of Burr Oak; three grandchildren, Justin and August Adams of Colorado and Clarissa Sandker of Sturgis; step grandson, Trent German of LaGrange, Ind.; brother, Danny (Dana) Caseman of Altha, Fla.; three sisters, Nancy (Jerry) Preston, Bonnie Caseman and Sandra (Dennis) Blodgett, all of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles and Jeffrey Caseman; and one brother, Howard Caseman. A private memorial service for the family will be held at 2 p.m. July 16, 2010, at the Constantine Cemetery.

He was also a pedigreed Devil Dog, an avid hunter, member of the Safari Club International and an avid proponent of the Boy Scouts of America. On Oct. 28, 1967, he married Arlene Wisler. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two sons, Charles “Alex” Pierson of Indianapolis and Justin R. Pierson of Knoxville, Tenn.; one daughter, Tiffany F. (Andrew) Cline, stationed in Japan; four grandsons, Keegan R., Charles A. (Xander), Liam K. Pierson and Tyler K. Cline; his mother; and a brother, Eric F. Pierson. Charlotte Ann Nardizzi, 85, of Indian River, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey. Charlotte was born August 12, 1924 in Grand Traverse County. She was the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth (Tompkins) Oatley. She grew up on Old Mission Point and as a young girl her family moved to Traverse City. Charlotte graduated from Traverse City High School in 1942. On May 7, 1944 she married Pasquale (Pat) Nardizzi in Traverse City. Throughout the years, the Nardizzi family has lived in Hale and Benzonia, Mich. They settled in Indian River in 1961 where they have been since. Charlotte and Pat enjoyed spending their winters in North Carolina. Charlotte enjoyed crafts, cooking and playing cards. She was an active member of the Indian River United Methodist Church as well as the United Methodist Women. She was a past president of the Cochran-Roberts V.F.W. Post Auxiliary and past worthy matron of the Primrose Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Indian River. She is survived by her husband, Pat; children, Rose E. (Charles) Marks of Flint, Mich., Pasquale (Nancy) Nardizzi, Jr. of Indian River, Mario L. Nardizzi of Indian River; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; siblings, Carl (Inez) Oatley of Williamsburg, Mich., Jack Oatley of North Fort Meyers, Florida, Virginia (Virgil) Ritondale of Tennessee, Richard (Helen) Oatley of Traverse City, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Charlotte was preceded in death by her infant grandson, Justin, and her sister, Doris. David M. Armstrong, 52, of Stuart, Fla., and formerly of ThreeRivers, died unexpectedly Thursday, July 15, with his loving family at his home in Laguna Beach, Calif. He was born Dec. 27, 1957, in Three Rivers, to Merrill H. and Barbara I. Armstrong. David was president and CEO of Armstrong International Inc., a fifth generation, family held, multinational manufacturer. David was an accomplished author and speaker to global audiences on ethics in business and appeared on numerous nationally syndicated programs.  David’s leadership was especially notable for emphasizing the following priorities; “Faith in God, family, business” … in this order. With strong faith and promoting an ethics based culture, David followed his father’s desire to globalize the company, most recently opening a manufacturing facility with multiple sales offices throughout the Indian subcontinent. David is survived by his wife of 32 years, Yvonne; sons Chad, and Kurt and his wife, Mandy; father, Merrill and his wife, Sharon; grandmother, Annie Grover; sister, Tamara Bloss, and her husband, Douglas; and brother Patrick and his wife, Nicole. David was active in his community at Sailfish Point and was the former president of the Sailfish Point Golf Club. A private family burial service will be held Wednesday at McCormick and Son funeral home, 1795 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach. A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at 10 a.m. July 30 at Armstrong International, Three Rivers,  with lunch served after the service. She attended Whole Life Christian Fellowship Church in Sturgis, and enjoyed buying and selling on eBay and playing golf. She loved time spent with her grandchildren. She is survived by her fiancé, David Weslock of Sturgis; four sons, Josh Sweet of Sturgis, R.J. Sweet of Shipshewana, Ind., Patrick Sweet of Sturgis and Michael Boals of Sturgis; four grandchildren, Gage, Dominic, Alexandria, Sylus and Syrus; mother, Opal Brinager of LaGrange; a sister, Vicki Lindowski of Berrien Springs; a brother, George Brinager of LaGrange; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ashley. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Blissfield. Douglas was engaged in farming all his life and established Thistle Down Farms where he raised and showed Belgian Draft Horses. He was a member of the Michigan Draft Horse Association, the National Belgian Corps and Past President of the Michigan Draft Horse Sale. He is survived by a son, Douglas L. Wegner of Tecumseh; two daughters, Kathy Schmitz of Addison and Connie Moore of Adrian; seven grandchildren, Shelley (Kent) Nickolaus, Brad (Melonie) Schmitz, Amy (Rick) Wismer, Bo (Tina) Schmitz, Jeff (Kelly) Moore, Jason (Audrey) Wegner and Jamie (Brian) Fox; 11 great-grandchildren, Katie and Cody Nickolaus, Austin, Erika and Chase Schmitz, Ryan and Megan Wismer, Katie and Ashley Schmitz, and Stephanie and Seth Moore; a great-granddaughter expected in August 2010; and a brother, Edward Wegner of Blissfield. Edna A. Gillan, 97, of Burr Oak,  passed away Thursday afternoon, July 15, 2010, at her home. She was born June 5, 1913,  in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Ernest and Angeline (Hunt-Gilbo) Beers. Edna had resided in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area nearly her whole life. On Oct. 23, 1930, she married Clarence E. “Jack” Gillan in LaGrange, Ind. He died Nov. 27, 1990. Edna was proud to be a farm wife and homemaker. She was a member of the Sturgis Missionary Church and enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting and reading and loved the game Aggravation. She was an avid reader and had a library in her home of more than 800 books. She will be remembered and admired by many for the active life she lived and her ability to live alone in her home until her death at the age of 97. She is survived by a brother, Chester “Chuck” Beers of Sturgis; nieces Lola (Floyd) Hodges of Sturgis, Lois Sites of Wolcottville, Ind., Marilyn “Mary Jo” Burton of Missouri, Suzanne (Robert) Jordan of LaGrange, Ind., Donna (Robert) Hagen of Sturgis, Lelah Palmer of Sturgis, Caryl Thompson of Florida and Colleen Perry of Sturgis; and many great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Lana Bell Beers, Myrtle Leiler and Gladys Parsons; and three brothers, Cecil Beers, Clarence Gilbo and Walter Gilbo. Eileen G. (Fish) and Kenneth E. Ritter Eileen Ritter died of cancer May 7, 2010, a day after celebrating her 89th birthday. Kenneth Ritter, born April 25, 1923, died December 10, 2004, also of cancer. Eileen, born in Westville, NY May 6, 1921 to Lee and Fern (Miller) Fish, lived in Cheboygan most of her young life attending St. Maryís Catholic School and Cheboygan High School. Eileen met Ken while she was fishing near the Icebreaker Mackinaw and, apparently liking what she caught, she didnít release him. They were married March 17, 1946 and raised their two children, Edward and Karyn, in Chicago and Northbrook. Eileen worked in Cheboygan for several doctors, was the lab technician at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, and was the lab technician at Washington National Insurance Company of Evanston, IL for over 20 years. Ken served in the United States Coast Guard aboard the Icebreaker Mackinaw and worked for Johnson-Lindroth printing company of Skokie, IL for over 40 years. Eileen and Ken are survived by their children Edward (Mary) of Sun Prairie, WI and Karyn McGrory of Prospect Heights, IL, five grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, Kenís sister LaVerne Lindroth of Skokie, IL, and sister-in-law Ernestine Hinkley Fish of Cheboygan, and many nieces and nephews. Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harold, Leo, Russell and William and sister Mary. Ken was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Clara (Peters) Ritter of Chicago. A grave site burial ceremony for both Eileen and Ken will be at Calvary Cemetery, Cheboygan, on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 10 A.M.  Memorial services were previously held. On January 8, 1949 in Grand Rapids, she married Maurice Smith, who preceded her in death 1997. In addition to raising her family, she was employed at several factories in Mt. Clemens and Richmond for many years. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Cross in the Woods Catholic Church, and enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, and sewing.

A resident of Topinabee since 1977, moving from Redford, Mich., Ethel was born November 9, 1917 in Calumet, the daughter of George and Lucille (Moyle) Maddick.  Growing up in Detroit, she was a graduate of Redford High School, and on November 24, 1937, she married Charles Cassie, who preceded her in death in 1977.  She was a charter member and active member of the Berean Bible Church in Topinabee and was employed at the Topinabee Library for several years. Baking was her hobby, yet making everyone feel special and sharing her faith were her gifts. Her daughter, Donna Cassie preceded her in death in 1962. Surviving are her son, Charles (Kathryn) Cassie of Fenton; her daughter, Joyce (James) Palmer of Topinabee; 5 grandchildren: James (Patricia) Palmer, of Gaylord, David Palmer of Roseville, William (Julie) Palmer of Temperance, Heather (Dennis) Farrell of Fenton, and Jeannie (Mark) McDonald, also of Fenton; 9 great grandchildren, Jennifer (Steve) Robbins, Samantha, Nicole, Elizabeth, and Christopher Palmer, and Cassie, Rebecca, and Jordan McDonald, Grace Farrell and 2 great great grandchildren; brother, Jim (Rosetta) Maddick of Canton, sisters, Marlene Bowe of Roseville, and Carol Hardt of Berkley, and several special nieces and nephews. Gerald L. Bauer Westphalia Age 90, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2010. He was born on December 8, 1919 in Westphalia the son of Leo and Rose (Schafer) Bauer. Mr. Bauer was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He worked for Motor Wheel for 5 years before starting work at Fisher Body in Lansing for 42 years and retired in 1992. He also was a Silo Builder for many years with his father and brother Jerome Bauer. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James A. Bauer; sister, Rosemary Thelen; brothers-in-law, Norman Thelen and Leo Fox. Surviving are his siblings, Alice Fox of Lansing, Jerome (Marlene) Bauer of Westphalia and Connie (Jerome) Schafer of Dewitt; 15 nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Westphalia with Rite of Committal following at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. Gordon E. Nash, age 89, of Adrian died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Provincial House. He was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Detroit, Mich., to Thomas and Jessie (Jameison) Nash. He graduated from Wayne High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, 32nd Division, from 1940 to 1943. On March 31, 1942, he married Helen Vakarcs. She preceded him in death on May 13, 1996. He married Phyllis Kniffen in July 11, 1999, in Adrian, and she survives. Gordon had been employed by the Adrian Girls Training School for eight years and then by Chevrolet Motor Division in Adrian for 10 years, retiring on Jan. 31, 1985. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Adrian. In addition to his wife, Phyllis, he is survived by a daughter, Donna Amy (William) Podobinski of Pittsburgh; two stepdaughters, Carol (Bill) Dunn of Williamston, Mich., and Joyce (James) Nickless of Adrian, Mich.; a brother, Donald Nash of Pittsford; four stepgrandchildren, seven step great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Helen, he was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Eunice Knox. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian with the Rev. Linda Farley and his son-in-law, the Rev. William Podobinski, officiating. Hubert “Herb” Estes, 89, of Blissfield  passed away Friday, July 23, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. He was born March 21, 1921, in Adrian, the son of Hubert and Mildred (Hall) Estes.   A decorated veteran,  Herb served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was stationed in England, France, Belgium and Germany. On July 24, 1946, Herb married Betty Jean Miller at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riga. Betty, his devoted wife of 62 years, survives. Herb worked for General Tire in Toledo as a millwright for many years, retiring in 1975. He was also a carpenter. In his retirement, Herb enjoyed working at the Blissfield Canning Company running the scales. A model train enthusiast, he took Betty on a wonderful cross-country train trip. Herb was a member of the Blissfield VFW, and joined the American Legion Post #1 in Paris while still in service. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Adrian. In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by a son, Herbert (Nancy) Estes of Jackson; three grandchildren, Alissabeth (Ben) Fox of Blissfield, Anthony Estes of Owosso, and Brett (Jenna) Estes of Adrian; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Fox, and Taylor and Nicholas Estes; and two sisters, Eleanor Mackey and Jan Foster, both of Adrian. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Estes; brothers, Howard and George Estes; and a sister, Betty Wood. The funeral service for Herb will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Adrian, with Pastor Joel Sarrault officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Blissfield. James A. Decatur DeWitt Passed away Monday, July 19, 2010 at the age of 81. He was born July 30, 1928, to James H. and Isabell (Sherin) Decatur, both of whom preceded him in death. Also preceding Jim in death was his great-grandson, Gavin Hansen. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Emma Decatur; 5 daughters, Kathy (Tom) Harrington, Karen Decatur, Janine (Joe) Cavanaugh, Lisa (Brian) Seyfried, Wendy (James) Brown, all of DeWitt; 2 sons, James (Laurie) Decatur of Mecosta, Bryan Decatur, of DeWitt; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Richard (Marguerite) Robinson of Evart; and several nieces and nephews. Jim was a lifetime resident of DeWitt and attended First Baptist Church of DeWitt. In 1985, Jim retired from Michigan Army National Guard. Jim loved fishing and golfing, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and going to his cabin. He served 12 years with the DeWitt School Board, 10 years with the DeWitt Planning Commission; 8 years with the DeWitt Memorial Board; and 3 years with the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was also a life member of DeWitt Masonic Lodge, and a long time employee of Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes. Special dog Tasha will miss Jim's companionship. The family would like to give thanks to Margie, Heidi, and Mary with McLaren Visiting Nurse & Hospice. Services will be held on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Noon at First Baptist Church of DeWitt, 11068 S. DeWitt Road, DeWitt, MI, with Rev. Dan Wilkinson officiating. James Michael “Jim” Fitzstephens, age 72, of Mendon, died Thursday July 15, 2010 at his home.   He was born in Pontiac, Mich., on Dec. 11, 1937, the son of J. Edward and Mary (Phelan) Fitzstephens.   The family moved to Mendon  in 1952 where he attended Mendon High School, and for a time resided in Chicago.   He was married to Joyce Schmidt in 1959; they were later divorced.   While residing in Mendon Jim worked at Carl Green’s filling station in Mendon and for Ronningen Research & Development in Vicksburg.  Most recently he was a truck driver for Vanguard Industries and Forrest River Paper Company.   He was married to Victoria McMillan on April 1, 1983 in Kalamazoo.  She died on Nov. 7, 1984. Jim is survived by five sons, Michael Fitzstephens (Sandy) of Schoolcraft, Daniel of Mattawan, Timothy of Schoolcraft, Scott of Santa Barbara, Calif., and David of Berrien Springs;  a step-daughter, Michelle McMillan of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; a brother, Gerald Fitzstephens (Brenda) of Mumfordsville, Ky.; two sisters, Theresa Zmudka of Mendon, and Mary Ellen Cook (Charles) of Marcellus; and by several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and by two brothers, Thomas and Patrick. He fulfilled his dreams of driving a truck and traveling after he retired after 30 years of service at General Motors. Jim was a man of many talents and was well-loved. He was well-known in the Bonfire Village where he worked and helped many people. She loved God and was a long-time member and servant of the Addison United Church. She loved children and retired from Addison Community Schools in 1997. She is survived by her husband, Richard Schilling of Addison; a daughter, Cindy (Steve) Kilburn of Texas; a son, Randy (Holly) Schilling of Illinois; a son, Denny (Nancy) Schilling of Minnesota; and grandchildren Josh Shelton, David Schilling, Hannah Schilling, Remmington Kilburn and Megan Kilburn, and many loved grand-animals. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Ricky Schilling; her father, William McVay; her mother, Edna Ingersoll; and her stepfather, Walter Ingersoll. “Some people only know one way of giving — with both hands, with all their hearts, without a second thought.” A celebration of Jane’s life of giving to all those she knew and loved is planned for Aug. 7, 2010, at 1:30 p.m., with her son, Randy Schilling, officiating at Addison United Church, 202 S. Janet Smith, age 77, of Adrian courageously lost her battle with recently diagnosed cancer. On Wednesday morning, July 21, 2010, she died peacefully with her daughters at her side, at her daughter and son-in-law’s Cheboygan lake house on Black Lake, where she frequently vacationed with them.   Janet was born in Detroit on Nov. 25, 1932, the daughter of Frank and Janet (Thomson) Wright. For 24 years she worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Company where she had met her husband, Francis E. Smith. They were married on Sept. 7, 1957. Janet was a Red Hat Lady and enjoyed quilting, knitting  and playing bridge. She was active in her church where she served as an elder and also with the Stephens Ministry, giving comfort to others. She enjoyed travelling many places with her family.   Janet will be greatly missed by her two daughters, Cathy (Mark) Miller of Tecumseh and Cheryl (Joseph) Choronzy of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; six grandchildren, Allison (Justin) Bigelow of Armada, Brian (Jacklyn Turbett) Miller and Jason Miller, both of Tecumseh, Michael Choronzy of Menomonie, Wis., and Matthew and Christy Choronzy, both of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; sister, Elizabeth (Ernest) Andre of Harrisville; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis E. Smith, and her parents. Thanks to Pastor Richard Mortimer, her Stephen Ministry “sisters,” family, friends and neighbors who all touched her life with cards, flowers, visits and phone calls. Janet appreciated the loving care she received at Lynwood Manor and Hospice of Lenawee. She was greatly loved by all who knew her and often stated “I’m so lucky,” and “I’m so blessed.”  A memorial service will be held Aug. 21, 2010, at 11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 211 W. Chicago Blvd., Tecumseh. She had also served as an officer, past vice-president and chief negotiator for the Madison Education Association; she was a member of the Michigan Education Associa­tion Presidents Academy, member of the Lenawee County Education Associa­tion, and member of the school improvement team for the Madison School District. She enjoyed scrapbooking, reading, crafts, camping, nature-watching and spending time with her animals. She is survived by a son, Scott Craig of Adrian; a daughter, Stacey Craig (Richard Estill) of East Lansing; and a brother, Dean (Judie) Alcock of Adrian; a sister, Christine Lorenz of Onsted; and her former husband, Stanley Craig of Wayne. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son, Casey. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. John graduated from Columbia Central in 1975. After graduation, John continued his life-long love of farming. John also devoted his energy to his career with Melling Tool for 30 years. His pride and joy was his family, his farm, spending time with his friends, staying at the cabin that he built with his family and friends in the U.P. and he also enjoyed hunting. In fulfillment of John’s wishes, Sarah and Chris were married at his bedside on July 20, surrounded by family in a private ceremony. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 23, at 1 p.m. at the Addison Fire Department, Station #3, 4111 Round Lake Highway, Manitou Beach. Luncheon to follow. She was born June 5, 1931, in Clinton, Mich., the daughter of Wesley P. Loyd and Ethel J. (Brooks) Loyd. She married her beloved husband, Edward P. Jacobs Sr., on Dec. 24, 1946, who preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 2006. Joyce was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Underwood-Orr Post #34 and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary #4187. She enjoyed family gatherings, bowling, playing cards, crossword puzzles, her beloved pets, Snowball and Joey, and Detroit Tigers baseball. Joyce is survived by her children, Linda (Glenn) Kinney of Hudson, Edward P. Jacobs Jr. of Pittsford and Tina L. Lillian M. Swihart, 78, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday morning, July 11, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Aug. 18, 1931, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Clarence and Lucile (Berry) Walters. Lillian was a lifelong Sturgis-area resident and a graduate of Brighton High School in Brighton, Ind., with the class of 1950. On Oct. 5, 1952, she married Melvin K. Stukey. This marriage ended in divorce, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2008. On Nov. 8, 1975, she was united in marriage with Stewart D. Swihart Sr. in Sturgis. He died Aug. 29, 2009. She had been employed by the First National Bank in Sturgis from 1971 until her retirement in 1990. Prior to that she had been employed by J.C. Penney in Sturgis from 1948-1965. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sturgis where she taught Sunday school from 1953-1963 and served as president of Lutherettes in 1963 and had also served as president of the Ladies Mission Circle. Lillian was always very active in the Sturgis community. Some of her involvements included holding the office of president with the Sturgis Band and Orchestra Parents Association in 1970, the Modern Mother’s Club, Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary 1994-1996, Sturgis Women’s Club, 1996-1998 and the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild. She served as treasurer of the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild and the Sturgis Women’s Club. She was a charter member of the Sturgis Hospital Popcorn Guild. Lillian was named Sturgis Citizen of the Year in 1998 and received the Sturgis Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds in 1995. Lillian was instrumental in the establishment of the Tree of Love at the Sturgis Hospital. She is survived by a daughter, Christine (Duane) Gonser of Sturgis; a son, Jon (Cara Davis) Stukey of Sturgis; four grandchildren, April (Galen) Geigley, Andrew Mathews, Steven Mathews and Tori Stukey; three great-grandchildren, Carina Geigley, Cierra Geigley and Jonathan Mathews; a sister, Donna (Frank) Krontz of Sturgis; a brother, Clarence (Elaine) Walters of Quincy; a stepson, Stew (Donna) Swihart II of Howe, Ind.; three step-grandchildren, Scott Swihart, Steven (Lisa) Swihart and Cathy (Kurt) Stevens; longtime close and caring friend, Joyce Shinn of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. She grew up in Gratiot County and graduated from Rodney B. Wilson Center. She married Lyle on November 4, 1942 in Breckenridge, MI and he survives her. In addition to being a loving mother and homemaker, she owned and operated Hynes' Bouquets. She was also an avid artist, working primarily in oil painting, a member of the St. Johns Art Guild, was an officer in the St. Johns T.O.P.S. Club, and was a 4-H leader for many years. She was a member of Lowe United Methodist Church and was a district officer for the United Methodist Women. After graduating from Britton High School in 1936, she received in 1940 her Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State Normal College. Muskegon Heights was her first teaching position and at this time she met and married Edward “Bud” Leighton, settling on Pottawatamie Street in Tecumseh where she continued to live. Margaret was a very dedicated elementary teacher at Lincoln, New McKinley, Birdsall and Alexander Schools in Adrian, retiring after 34 years of service. In 1957 she married Robert Hoekstra and enjoyed many friends and dances at the Tecumseh Country Club and a great trip to Europe. She had many great adventures traveling to Europe, the Caribbean and Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, and all through the United States with travel groups and good friends.   Margaret was a very dedicated church member, active in the Mary Martha Circle and the turkey suppers. She was the oldest living female member of the Britton Congregational Christian Church. Her memberships included the Michigan Edu­cation Association, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (Lenawee), Busi­ness and Professional Women’s Association (Tecum­-seh and Adrian), and the Herrick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary — volunteering more than 3,000 hours. Her friends were many and of all ages, from the 3-year-old next door to her 103-year-old good friend, Mrs. Claxton. Margaret is survived by her daughters, Susan (Richard) Dembinsky of Port Orange, Fla., and Betty Foltz of Ann Arbor, Mich.; grandchildren, Mark Dembinsky of Alexandria, Va., and Christopher (Heather) Dembinsky of New Smyrna, Fla.; nephews, Wesley (Suzy) Exelby of Britton, Mich., and Dan Exelby of Brooklyn, Mich.; and cousins, Polly Judd, Patti Diaz and Joanne Houghton. Cummings in Chicago where the couple made their home and raised their family. Marion was employsed as a Home Health Aid for many years. In November 1994, Marion and Richard moved to Topinabee where they have been since. Marion loved to cook. She enjoyed music being surrounded by her family. She attended the Berean Bible Church and CURVES. She is survived by her husband, Richard; children, Barbara (Ray) Hoff of Topinabee, James (Lori) Cummings of Topinabee, Kathleen Clancy of Tompinabee; seven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; brother, John DeJong of Topinabee; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Marion was preceded in death by her grandson Richard Hoff, and her sisters Dorothy Ray and Annabelle Berndt.   Mase, a 1960 graduate of Onaway High School, worked for the Michigan State Department of Highway and for Cheboygan Memorial Hospital in the maintenance department. His passion and talent for fishing took him to Grand Marais in the summers and his winters were spent in Tower carving and painting decoys, which are admired by many. His kind heart and generosity will be missed by all. Mase is survived by his four children, Beth (Brian) Flynn, Edward (Barb) Mason, Lynda (Al) Hererra and Patrick (Sharla) Mason. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Sam, Nick, Shelby, Faith, Katie and Scarlett. He will be sadly missed by his dear companion, Tess Burfield, and his close friend and cousin, Lawrence Veihl. Mary Ann Giddings Hood

Mary Ann Giddings Hood East Lansing Born in Saginaw, Michigan, on January 26, 1930 to George and Marian Giddings; died July 1, 2010 at the age of 80. The oldest of eight children, Mary Ann shouldered added responsibility for her siblings, thereby acquiring people and organizational skills as well as great patience, which served her will throughout her life. Like her mother, she was a voracious reader. Mary Ann gained lifelong friends while attending Allen Street School in Lansing, Michigan. Youth activities and choir at Michigan Avenue Methodist Church, Girl Scout functions, friends and family filled her high school years. She graduated from Lansing Eastern High School in 1948. In 1952, she graduated from Michigan State College. At "State," she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. In her senior year, she met, and later married the love of her life, Robert Brooks Hood, Jr. Mary Ann earned a Master of Arts in French Language and Literature in 1954 and a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics in 1963. Mrs. Hood joined the faculty at American University in 1957 as a specialist in teaching English as a second Language (ESL). She held several positions at American University including that of Director of the English Language Institute. She was a pioneer in the design and development of English proficiency tests for foreign students. Her tests were used in Bangladesh, China, Mexico, and the U.S. Mrs. Hood retired in 1987 with the rank of Associate Professor. Mary Ann's ESL expertise offered her unique opportunities. She was a Fulbright Scholar, lecturing at Centro Colombo Americano and La Pedagogica Femenina Nacional in Bogotá, Columbia in 1960. She was a teacher trainer for the Peace Corps in 1962. She consulted and taught in Israel for the U.S. Information Agency in 1980. Mary Ann traveled extensively in China from 1984 to 1991 as an invited lecturer, training teachers, developing tests, and evaluating programs for teaching English to Chinese students. Mrs. Hood chaired, organized, or presented at, an array of ESL conferences throughout the U.S. from 1967-1987. She was an ESL consultant for Birzeit University in Israel, the University of Colorado, the University of Virginia, the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C. and GEICO. A hobby of collecting antique silver became a small business after her retirement from American University. Often consulted about the history of antique silver pieces, she maintained a shop and was known as the "Silver Lady." Mary Ann Hood resided with her beloved husband Robert in Falls Church and McLean, Virginia for 50 years, returning to East Lansing after his death in 2004. Surviving are seven siblings: George H. She is survived by her daughters, Lois (Donald) Crooks of Millersburg, Mary (Gary) Sias of Cheboygan, Betty (Larry) LaFave of Onaway and Missouri and Arlene Susan (Victor) Garms of Ocqueoc; a son, Elmer (Sandy) Whaley of Rogers City; 14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren; her brothers, Herbert Stock Jr. of Millersburg and Sam Stock of New Mexico; and her sisters, Lois (Bruce) Price of Onaway and Minnie (Jim) Wilkinson of Onaway. David Stanley Hersh, 89, of North Adams, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Hillsdale County, the son of Lucian and Ada (Lovett) Hersh. He is survived by his wife, Zellia (Wells) Hersh whom he married on June 10, 1945; three children, Phyllis (John) Modisett of Belton, Texas, Stanley Hersh of North Adams and Alice (Frank) MacCue of Macon, N.C.; son-in-law, Geroge Winchell of Stanton; three grandchildren, Andrew (Angela) Modisett, Phillip Modisett and Paul Winchell; two great-grandchildren, Carsyn and Tristan Modisett; several nieces and nephews and a German exchange daughter, Friederike Monschau. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Marcia Winchell; two brothers, Robert and Harold Hersh and two sisters, Barbara Randall and Donna Zimmerman. Mr. Hersh worked as a painter for many years and painted many barns in the Hillsdale County area and he also worked as a farmer for many years and had served as a 4-H Leader. He was a member of the Somerset Center United Methodist Church and a former member of the Adams Township Grange. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking and his biggest joy was working with the Iris flowers and sharing them with others. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. David Stanley Hersh will be held at the Somerset Center United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Friday with Pastor Jeanne Koughn officiating. Ernest B. Kaetzel, 94, of Litchfield, passed away Monday, July 19, 2010, at the Laurels of Coldwater.  Born Dec. 19, 1915, in Hillsdale County, he was the son of Charles and Elsie (Faulk) Kaetzel and graduated from Litchfield High School in 1936.   Ernie served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-1945 and had been employed at the Litchfield Dairy and Simpson Industries, Litchfield. He was a member of the Litchfield Congregational Church, Litchfield American Legion, and Franklin Masonic  Lodge F&AM.   On July 12, 1942, he married Nora Kay Shepard and she preceded him in death in 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Kaetzel    of Litchfield and sister Helen (Donald) Gauger of Reading. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Eddie Kaetzel. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Litchfield Congregational Church with the Rev. Michael Murray officiating.  Interment will follow in Allen Cemetery.  Visitation is scheduled from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield.   Memorials are suggested to the Litchfield District Library or a charity of donor’s choice.

Gordon E. Nash, age 89, of Adrian, died Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Provincial House.  He was born Feb. 5, 1921, in Detroit to Thomas and Jessie (Jameison) Nash. He graduated from Wayne High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp., 32nd Division from 1940 to 1943. On March 31, 1942, he married Helen Vakarcs. She preceded him in death on May 13, 1996. He married Phyllis Kniffen July 11, 1999, in Adrian and she survives. Gordon had been employed by the Adrian Girls’ Training School for eight years and then by Chevrolet Motor Division in Adrian for 10 years, retiring on Jan. 31, 1985. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Adrian. In addition to his wife, Phyllis, he is survived by a daughter, Donna Amy (William) Podobinski of Pittsburgh; two step-daughters, Carol (Bill) Dunn of Williamston and Joyce (James) Nickless of Adrian; a brother, Donald Nash of Pittsford; four step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Helen, he was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Eunice Knox. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian with the Rev. Linda Farley and his son-in-law, the Rev. William Podobinski officiating. Burial will be in Church’s Corners Cemetery. Jansen who passed away in 1945, she later married Theodore Jansen who passed away in 1977, and then married John Pearce who preceded her in death in 1992. Surviving are two sons, Ted (Penny) Jansen of Hillsdale and Dale (Mary) Jansen of Leesburg, Fla.; a granddaughter Jasmine Jansen of Hillsdale; in addition to 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Jewell was preceded in death by her parents, a son Bruce, and a sister, Clementine Townsend. Graveside funeral services for Jewell Jansen-Pearce will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Irving Park Cemetery in Chicago, Ill. She was born March 20, 1942, in Ypsilanti, the daughter of Clarence and Dorothy (Hockrine) Lincoln. She is survived by her husband, Clyde DeVoe whom she married on Dec. 31, 1962; one daughter, Susan Taylor of Brooklyn, Mich.; one step-son, Clyde DeVoe, Jr. of Dexter; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Linda) Lincoln of Palacios, Texas and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary A. Strain on April 30, 2010, and her beloved Bassett Hound, “Shadow.” Pat retired from the University of Michigan Hospital after 30 years of service where she worked as a patient transporter and she attended the Frontier United Methodist Church. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family and she was gifted at cooking and crocheting. She was also an avid outdoors person who enjoyed gardening and animals. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Patricia Ruth “Pat” DeVoe will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Don Lee officiating. Ray was a resident of the Hillsdale area the majority of his life and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam era. Surviving besides his wife Vicki are a stepdaughter, Kelly Shiverdecker and Cris Shell of Akron, Ohio; two step-grandchildren, Angel Shiverdecker and Cristopher Shell. Ronald D. Sowle, 69, of Hudson passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. He was born July 25, 1940, the son of Alfred and Ruth (Gottschalk) Sowle. Ron graduated from Coldwater High School Class of 1958 and was a retired Rodeo Cowboy. He was a Gold Card member of the International Professional Rodeo Association and the Mid-States Rodeo Association, winning multiple events and All Around titles in the rough stock riding events. He also participated in the Michigan Team Penning Association and enjoyed trail riding with his friends. Ron dearly loved his children, grandchildren and will be sadly missed by his family and many friends. Surviving Ron are his parents, Alfred (Ruth) Sowle of Coldwater; his significant other, Shelly Bowen of Quincy; four children, Scott Sowle of Seattle, Washington, Gregg Grubb of Haslett, Jim (Donna) Sowle of Frisco, Texas and Pam (Kevin) Nash of Elsie; seven grandchildren, Heather, Thomas, Candace, Forrest, Jessica, Josie and Jolene; one twin brother, Donald (Doris) Sowle of Bronson. (Lunger) Wessell. Patty graduated from Three Rivers High School in 1972.  She graduated with her L.P.N. from Glen Oaks Community College and began working for Three Rivers Hospital.  She later went to work for the Three Rivers Health Clinic and later for Dr. Don Schimnoski ,M.D., for over 25 years. On April 11, 1975, Patty married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Wortinger, and together they raised three beautiful daughters, Rebecca (Steven) Torres, Amanda (Glenn) Winters, and Jennifer (Joshua) Barner, all of Three Rivers; three grandchildren, A.J. Torres, Rory Winters, and Lizzie Torres; mother-in-law, Kathleen Wortinger and sister-in-law, Cinda Forbush, both of Three Rivers; uncle, Norman Wessell, of Centreville, Mich., and niece and nephew, Sheramy and Lee Forbush. Patty truly loved and was devoted to her family, husband, children and grandchildren.  She was very active in her early years in the Three Rivers Band Boosters and Girl Scouts. Patty was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Steve Wessell. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hohner Funeral Home. Patricia L. St. Amour, age 68, of Cheboygan, passed away Friday, June 25, 2010. She was born April 14, 1942 in Pontiac to Clarence and Margaret (Morrow) Hudak. In 1962, Patricia married William K. St. Amour, who preceded her in death in 2000. Patricia was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Huron Street Tabernacle. She was an avid baker, having won first place in an apple pie baking contest and had baked all of her children’s wedding cakes. She enjoyed taking walks and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her six children, Jomarie (Ron Blaskowski) St. Amour, Kurt St. Amour, William (Penny) St. Amour, Therese (Kenneth) Warner, all of Cheboygan, Andrew (Holly) St. Amour of Wolverine and Alys-Marie Wilkinson of Cheboygan; one sister, Anna-Marie (David) McCormick of Cheboygan; two brothers, Russell (Dorothy) Hudak of Cheboygan and Joe (Ruth) Hudak of Detour; 25 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, William, Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Theresa Brasseur; and one brother, Eddie Hudak. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will take place on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Beaugrand Township Hall with Pastor Sam Agee officiating. He was born on July 25, 1940, the son of Alfred and Ruth (Gottschalk) Sowle.   Ron graduated from Coldwater High School with the class of 1958, and was a retired rodeo cowboy. He was a gold card member of the International Professional Rodeo Association and the Mid-States Rodeo Association, winning multiple event and all-around titles in the rough stock riding events. He also participated in the Michigan Team Penning Association, and enjoyed trail riding with his friends. Ron dearly loved his children, grandchildren, and will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.   Surviving Ron are his parents Alfred (Ruth) Sowle of Coldwater; significant other Shelly Bowen of Quincy; four children Scott Sowle of Seattle, Wash., Gregg Grubb of Haslett, Jim (Donna)Sowle of Frisco, Texas and Pam (Kevin) Nash of Elsie; seven grandchildren Heather, Thomas, Candace, Forrest, Jessica, Josie and Jolene; and one twin brother Donald (Doris) Sowle of Bronson.   Funeral services for Ron will be Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 2 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson, with Charles VanKeuren officiating. Rosa Maria "Rosita" Cordes Kalamazoo Rosita died Thursday evening, July 22, 2010 in Kalamazoo, MI after struggling to recover from a recent stroke. Freed from the challenges that she faced her all of her life, we are certain she is smiling alongside her parents, Jerome and Rosa, in heaven. From the time of her birth in Lansing, MI, on November 30, 1955, all who knew her realized that she was a force of nature. To meet her was to feel her impact, sometimes literally. Throughout her life she struggled with limitations and frustrations. These she responded to with tenacity and humor. In countless ways she taught us all endurance, sacrifice, grace and love. Sally Melinda (Allen) Desprez Roscommon Sally Melinda Desprez (Allen), passed away July 17, 2010, at the age of 69 after a brief but fierce battle with leukemia. Although she could not overcome the disease, her participation in two research studies to find new treatments showed her courage and may save future lives. A native of Newberry Springs, Calif., Michigan became Sally's home at the age of 18 as a young wife and mother, living first in St. Johns, then Saline, Ann Arbor and Roscommon. In her 40s, Sally fulfilled a lifelong dream and earned her degree in computer science with a 4.0 average. A for, r at the University of Michigan, Sally continued to share her talent for computers after retirement by revitalizing the Web site and providing tech support for her church in Roscommon. In her 60s, Sally took up downhill skiing, hiked the Grand Canyon, learned how to paint watercolors, and turned her gift for music toward playing hand-bells in her church choir. Sally's daughters (Sherri [Mike] Falkenstein, Michelle [Al] Lavra, Lisa Desprez), grandsons (Albert and Daniel Lavra, Bradley and Christopher Orr), sisters (Billie [Stan] Reed, Donna [Steve] Pursiful, Beverly Lowe, Leone Koops), dear friends (Gayle and Phyllis Desprez), and dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will always remember her kindness, grace, devotion, love, intellect, strength and joy in her family. Sarah E. Caltrider Mason After only 15 years, Sarah was taken from us on July 17, 2010. She was born in Lansing, MI on June 14, 1995, the second daughter of Bruce and Suzanne Caltrider. Sarah was part of a very close knit family, sharing life with sister and best friend Zoe, and twin sisters Kaitlyn and Chloe. This past June, Sarah completed her freshman year at Mason High School as an Honor Student earning a 4.0 grade point average and achieving Varsity letters in both swimming and water polo. She played oboe in Mason High School Concert Band and saxophone in the marching and jazz bands. She had recently been selected for the Mason Color Guard Squad for fall 2010 and the Symphonic Band. Sarah was a Girl Scout for ten years, participating in many community service projects, completing her Bronze Award and beginning her Silver Award. Sarah was recently confirmed as a member of First Presbyterian Church of Mason. Sarah was kind and caring of other people, often thinking of others before herself and helping wherever needed. She loved life and lived it big and bold, ready to face any adventure. To her, swim and water polo teams and jazz band were her great passions. She truly loved her teammates and being with them. The four Caltrider girls were inseparable, and Sarah dearly loved and was dearly loved by her family. Her death creates a void that can never be filled. He was a resident of Lansing the past 20 years, coming from ThreeRivers. Steven was employed in the shipping department for American Axle and General Motors. Steven enjoyed his family very much, and also liked to cook, garden and fish, and enjoyed traveling and caring for animals. He is survived by three sisters, Roseann Johnson of Oregon,Sueann Mirkovich on Indianapolis, and Marieann Johnson of Constantine; seven brothers, Tim of Centreville, Ted of California, Jim of Lansing, John of ThreeRivers, Jack of London, Canada, Tom of Sturgis and Joe of Nevada; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Michael; a sister-in-law, Marsha Johnson; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Mirkovich. Cremation has been conducted. Private family services will be held. Interment of cremains will be at Moorepark Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Susan ‘Sue” Marie Gowen Hendricks, age 58, of Cobb County, Ga., passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010. She was born in Flint and had resided in Cobb County for the past 28 years. Sue had been employed at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for 28 years. During that time she attended college and earned her degree in nursing. She had been a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church for 28 years. Sue loved to read, visit and spoil her grandchildren and attend church and plays. Sue was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother. She was selfless and always ready to help a friend in need. She enjoyed writing and making cards for friends and family. Sue will be dearly missed. Psalm 37:5 “Depend on the Lord, trust him, and he will take care of you.” She is survived by one daughter, Lisa (Gordon) Mosley of Acworth, Ga.; one son, Tim (Amanda) Hendricks of Richmond Hill, Ga.; mother, Geraldine Zarza of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Larry Gowen; grandsons, Cole Hendricks and Jack Hendricks; nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Sadie. She was preceded in death by her father, Urban Gowen and stepfather, Ray Zarza. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Rev. Nathan Barnell will officiate. Theresa Miller, age 86, of Tecumseh diedon Monday, July 19, 2010, at Herrick Medical Center underthe careof Hospiceof Lenawee and with her family at her side. She was born on Jan. 5, 1924, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Matthew and Agnes (Bora) Solarski. She was united in marriage to Russell C. Miller on June 28, 1947, and he preceded her in death on April 1, 2010. Theresa was a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church.  She was a homemaker and worked at Tecumseh Products during World War II as a “Rosie the Riveter.” She had also worked at H.W. Tuttle and then Faraday in Tecumseh until retiring in 1987. She was an avid gardener and animal lover and enjoyed crocheting. She was a great cook, and she adored her family, her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.   She is survived by three sons, Gregory Miller and Vincent (Penny) Miller of Tecumseh, and Dennis (Julie) Miller of Sand Creek; one daughter, Elizabeth (Rick) Steele of League City, Texas; seven grandchildren, David, Carrie, Daniel (Biz), Noah and Benjamin Miller, and Corey and Cally Steele; and great-grandsons, Bradley and Conrad. In addition to her parents and husband, Russell, she was preceded in death by three brothers Ray, Ed and Walter Solarski; and two sisters Mary Richardson and Rosie Solarski. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.Thursday, July 22, at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. The Funeral Mass will be at 12 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church. Mr. Gutow proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. He founded, owned, and managed companies in tool and die as well as rental properties. Devoted to his family and a father figure to many, he most enjoyed his dogs, boat, western movies, home, and yard. He treasured the friendships, the memories, and the videos he had taken of his sons' athletics. Beloved husband for 43 years of Sharon, proud father of David and Michael (Michelle), loving grandfather of Marissa and Marcus, he was preceded in death by parents Robert and Dolores (Pioch) Gutow and brothers Robert and Ronald. Surviving are his brother Kenneth (Carla), sisters Gail (Albert) Diem and Barbara, and several very special nieces and nephews. He was the dear son-in-law of Mary (the late Harry) Albrecht and brother-in-law of the late John (Robin) Albrecht. A memorial service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, 16339 14 Mile, Fraser, on Saturday, July 31. Walter E. Leist, age 93, of Carp Lake, passed away July 2, 2010 at his home on Lake Michigan. He was born September 27, 1916 in Boyne City to Edwin and Sylvia (Hurd) Leist. Walter was the firm foundation that his large extended family flourished from. He will be missed by all who were touched by his loving spirit. Walter is survived by his wife, Rita; daughter, Judy & Bruce Anderson of Longwood, Florida; three grandchildren, Shelly (Mike) Hensley, Scott Anderson and Steve Anderson; five great-grandchildren, Luke, Madeline, Emma, Braydon and Althea; sister, Merna Gillespie; stepson, Dan Wilcox; two sisters-in-law, Judy Ranville and Aneta Collard; numerous beloved nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews, including Gerald Ranville and Peggy Klein, who lived with Walter for several years during their childhood. Mr. Leist was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann; four sisters, Margaret, Wanda, Gerry and Edith; and two brothers, Everett and Russel. Wayne C. Long, 75, of South Bend, Ind., passed away at his home on Thursday, July 22, 2010.  Wayne was born on March 23, 1935, to the late Edward and Edna (Crain) Long in Sturgis, Mich.  He was one of six children in the Long household.  After graduating from Sturgis High School in 1953 Wayne served in the United States Army and continued to serve in the reserves until 1962.  After serving in the Korean War, Wayne came back stateside, wed the love of his life, Helen Sorrell at a ceremony in LaGrange, Indiana on March 2, 1957 and joined the Michigan State Police Force on March 3, 1957.  He retired after 25 years of service to his community.  Wayne and Helen were “snowbirds”, traveling from Michigan to Texas every winter and continued to do so even after Helen passed in 2003 including even going this past winter.  During all of their long commutes to Texas Wayne and Helen made it a point to map out their trip to stop at as many casinos as possible on their long trip, even stopping in Las Vegas and Louisiana on their way to Texas.  He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Helen Long and siblings Benny Long, Jack Long, and Jean Franks.  Wayne is survived by his children, Sherri (John)Harper of South Bend, Ind., Andrew Long of South Bend, Ind., and Connie (Larry) Washington of Gonzales, Texas; brother Terry Long of Winterhaven, Floa.,  and sister Susanna Jent of Howe, Ind.  Wayne has been cremated and the family will be having a Celebration of Life Open House at the F.O.P Lodge 95 in Niles on Monday, July 26, 2010 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.and then they will head to Marion, Arkansas where he will be interred next to his wife at the Crittenden County Cemetery.  Those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to the American Cancer Society or the Center for Hospice.  Condolences, photos and memories may be left for the family at www.BrownFuneralHomeNiles.com.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Niles.

She was born Sept. 28, 1932, in Detroit, a daughter of Oliver and Irene (LaPrairie) Sova and attended Detroit area schools. She married Joseph J. Smith in Detroit and they later divorced. Yvonne worked as an LPN at a pediatrician’s office in Detroit. She was also a homemaker, and was a real estate broker in the Port Austin-Caseville area. She had been a resident of Mendon since 1994, where she attended St. Edward Catholic Church. In her spare time, Yvonne learned sign language, enjoyed oil painting, baking for family and friends, and working in her rose garden. Yvonne is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Gail Smith of Three Rivers; a daughter, Ardean Boyer of Lexington; three grandchildren, Joseph A. Smith, Miranda Smith, and Dane Boyer; a brother, John Sova; and a sister, Susan Bradd. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Elmer Indo and Robert Armstrong; two daughters, Jennifer Smith and Michelle Smith; and a brother, Roland Sova.
