Donald Herbert Huldin M.D.

Donald Herbert Huldin, M.D. Donald Herbert Huldin, M.D., 77 years, died Saturday, July 17, 2010. He was born in Muskegon, Michigan, the son of Blanche and Ewald Huldin. Donald graduated from Carleton College where he met his wife of 54 years, Lois Jordan. He attended the Medical School at the, , Ann Arbor, did his internship in San Francisco with the Public Health Service and a Dermatology residency at the University of Michigan. He practiced Dermatology in Jackson, Michigan before moving to Okemos and opening an office in Lansing. He valued his association with the Michigan State Medical Society and with the Michigan State University Medical School, where he was a professor from 1971 to 1997. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Raymond. He is survived by his wife, Lois; his brother, Jack Huldin (Barbara); Donna Huldin, his sister-in-law; four daughters, Jennifer Huldin, Julie Huldin, Jacqueline Schlein (Matthew) and Josie Jordan Lipkin (David); ten grandchildren, Kate, Sam, Ben and Molly Doyle, Samantha, Noah and Gabrielle Schlein, Ari, Ahlora and Annabelle Lipkin. The name Donald derives from the Celtic "Proud Chieftain", and a proud chieftain he was, literally and figuratively. Donald was a proud alumni of Carleton College and the University of Michigan Medical School. And, although he was proud to have served on the faculty of the Michigan State School of Medicine and as president of the Ingham County Medical Society, he always said he felt it was rather an honor to be a physician and was daily grateful to be able to help and serve. Don was also a proud member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) and sang with gusto as a baritone with the Capital City Chordsmen in Lansing and with choirs in Traverse City, Jackson and Sarasota. He was a proud member of his church and church choir at Peoples Church and a proud supporter of the Okemos Public Schools Music and Athletic programs. Yet, above all he was proud of his family, boasting to his patients daily of their accomplishments big and small. It is ironic that he died of heart failure, for Don had a heart bigger and more generous than most and he delighted in giving, and sharing. He paid for the college tuition of many family members and friends and would always offer you a bite off his plate of whatever he was eating. He loved finding just that special gift for Christmas and taking the family out to dinner to celebrate occasions. Many would say, however, his most valuable gift was the gift of gab. He could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, at anytime, calling them, "partner", and leaving them with a smile and a warm feeling inside because he showed interest in them and cared. A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 24th at 10:00 a.m. at Peoples Church, 200 West Grand River, East Lansing, Michigan, 48823. Don made a practice of reaching out to those in need, so in lieu of flowers the family requests you make a donation to your favorite charity.
