Charles Edwin Clay, 47, of Jonesville formerly of Homer, passed away Saturday, June 26, 2010, at his home. He was born Nov. 20, 1962, in Albion, to Charles Edward and Carolyn A. (Nyssen) Clay. He is survived by his only child Kamaria “Kami” Lane Taylor. I didn’t get much time with him but loved him and enjoyed every moment we spent together.  A very special thanks to Lisa and Marla that helped aid him in his last days as he struggled with Lou Gehrig’s disease. We love you and miss you deeply. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no services at this time.

Charles “Charlie” Schmitz, age 75, of Mendon, died Monday, July 5, 2010, at the Bronson Hospital emergency room.   He was born July 27, 1934, in Chicago, a son of Paul A. and Norvella (Kropel) Schmitz.  He attended St. Martin’s Catholic School and graduated from St. Rita’s Catholic School in 1953.    Charlie served in the U.S. Army from 1957-59 and was stationed in Italy. While living in Chicago, Charlie had worked for Pepsi-Cola Bottlers for 15 years, and later for Blue Island Cab Company and McVittie Plating Company. While living in Mendon he had been employed by Lear Plastics, where he was an active member of UAW Local 503, serving as union steward and sergeant at arms of the Area 6 Council. He and his family served as hosts for several area foreign exchange students. He was also a chauffer for the Amish community. On June 11, 1977, Charlie married Nan Custard in Mendon. She survives, along with a daughter, Theresa Schmitz of Three Rivers; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Urick; a brother, Lawrence Schmitz of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents; and by five brothers, Paul, Michael, Thomas, Robert and Edward Schmitz. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon, where the Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.   The funeral Mass for Charlie Schmitz will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Saint Edward Catholic Church in Mendon, with the Rev. Father James Vinh Le officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Memorials may be directed to either the Salvation Army, St. Edward Catholic Church, or the Mendon United Methodist Church. Charlotte Ann Nardizzi, 85, of Indian River, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey. Charlotte was born August 12, 1924 in Grand Traverse County. She was the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth (Tompkins) Oatley. She grew up on Old Mission Point and as a young girl her family moved to Traverse City. Charlotte graduated from Traverse City High School in 1942. On May 7, 1944 she married Pasquale (Pat) Nardizzi in Traverse City. Throughout the years, the Nardizzi family has lived in Hale and Benzonia, Mich. They settled in Indian River in 1961 where they have been since. Charlotte and Pat enjoyed spending their winters in North Carolina. Charlotte enjoyed crafts, cooking and playing cards. She was an active member of the Indian River United Methodist Church as well as the United Methodist Women. She was a past president of the Cochran-Roberts V.F.W. Post Auxiliary and past worthy matron of the Primrose Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Indian River. She is survived by her husband, Pat; children, Rose E. (Charles) Marks of Flint, Mich., Pasquale (Nancy) Nardizzi, Jr. of Indian River, Mario L. Nardizzi of Indian River; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; siblings, Carl (Inez) Oatley of Williamsburg, Mich., Jack Oatley of North Fort Meyers, Florida, Virginia (Virgil) Ritondale of Tennessee, Richard (Helen) Oatley of Traverse City, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Charlotte was preceded in death by her infant grandson, Justin, and her sister, Doris. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 5, 2010 at the Indian River United Methodist Church. Rev. John Lover and Rev. Jay Kendall will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Upon the request of the family, casual dress only please. Following the service, friends are invited to a luncheon to be held in the church fellowship hall. Danjel was a very good student and enjoyed going to college. He had so many prospects for his future. He cultivated very honest and sincere values. He practiced his religion and attended Masses every Sunday. Danjel was a talented musician. He played several instruments and was one of the finest members in the folk dance group. Douglas Warner Osworth I, age 74, of Tecumseh, went home to the Lord on Sunday, July 4, 2010, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born Jan. 25, 1936, in Fairfield, Mich. to Opal (Metz) and Harold O’Haver. He was later adopted by Kenneth Osworth, and was raised by his grandparents, Raymond and Bertha Metz. He graduated from Adrian High School in 1955, and enlisted in the United States Navy with the Navy Mobile Construction Battalion I Sea Bees from 1955 to 1959. He was a machine repairman and later became a drill instructor. He married his high school sweetheart, Janet K. Woerner on Oct. 14, 1956. They had the blessing of enjoying many years together, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 14, 2006. In his earlier years, Doug was a member of the Adrian Moose Lodge #1034, a long standing member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tecumseh, a member of the Tecumseh Jaycees, and a charter member of the Tecumseh Lions Club. He also belonged to the Tecumseh Masonic Lodge #69. He was also on the Raisin Township Board of Appeals for many years. Doug worked for Barnes Group Corp. in Saline, Mich. He retired in 1996, but continued as a part-time engineering consultant for several years. He loved hunting, golfing, John Deere tractors and classic cars, spending time with his sons and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife, Janet, of 53 years; three sons, Douglas II (Lisa), Jeffrey (Denice) and Kevin (Jennifer) Osworth. He was the loving grandfather of Kayla, Steven, Cameron, Livia and Maris Osworth. He is also survived by a half-sister, Constance Osworth; and cousins, Lowell (Kathy) Metz and Randy Metz. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian with the Rev. Richard Mortimer officiating. Interment will be held at the Lenawee Hills Memorial Park in Adrian with full military rites conducted by the Tecumseh American Legion Post Underwood Orr Post #34 and the Tecumseh VFW Post #4187. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Adrian. Ernestene Graybill, 66, passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She spent her final days at home surrounded by loved ones. She passed away July 3. She was born Ernestene Juanita Brooks on Sept. 18, 1943, to parents James and Marjorie (Doriell) Brooks. She graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1961. Ernestene married Maurice Olin Graybill on Dec. 21, 1963. They were happily married 33 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; one brother, James Brooks, and one sister, Mary Louella Stump. She worked 20 years at Fayette Tubular Products. And she was the owner/operator of A GraySwan Quilt shop. Ernestene is survived by four children, Peggy (Randy) Swander of Clayton, Linda (Josef) Swaney of Navarre Fla., James (Debbie) Graybill of Hubbard, Ohio, and Juanita (Jamie) Kelley of Adrian; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan and Noah Swander of Clayton, and Ashley Swaney and Maurice Graybill of Navarre, Fla.; two brothers, Tom Brooks of Onsted and Ivan (Velma) Brooks of Carleton, Mich.; and four sisters, Donna Steele of Jonesville, Ruth Westgate of Onsted, Ann Rice of Onsted and Carol Brooks of Adrian. Also dearly loved by her husband’s brothers and sisters, Emma Escott of Tecumseh, Arlene (Cliff) Ogan of Lebanon Missouri, Dub (Karen) Graybill of Santana, Kansas, John Graybill of Lebanon, Missouri, Carol Pebbles of Kansas City, Missouri, Billie (Don) Moon of Arizona and Ralph (Teresa) Graybill of Glasgow, Scotland, U.K. She leaves behind numerous beloved nieces, nephews and friends. She will be missed by loving friends and her church family. She was a long-standing member of Canandaigua Community Church. She started the youth group at the church and served as director for a number of years. She enjoyed spending time talking to everyone she knew. Ernestene also enjoyed quilting, card games, and vacationing with her family.  Ethel L. Knight, 91, of Adrian, passed away Friday, July 2, 2010, at home. Ethel was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Hamilton Ala., the daughter of Robert and Etta (Self) Mobley. On Oct. 9, 1935, she married Marvin Knight in Mississippi. Ethel and Marvin celebrated over 51 years of marriage prior to his death in 1987. Ethel was a member of the Church of Christ. She worked for Ace Drill for 18 years, retiring in 1981. Ethel enjoyed reading and was known for her beautiful gardens. She is survived by four sons, Jerry Knight of Adrian,  Norman (Vivian) Knight, also of Adrian, Robert (Noni) Knight of Portage, Mich., and Mickey (Sloan) Knight of Grand Ledge, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Robert I. J. (Carolyn) Mobley of Alexander City, Ala.; sister, Eleanor (Joe) Stagner of Tallasee, Ala.; and her dear friend, Phyllis Slocum. Evelyn Mae O'Connor Beloved soul mate, mother, and grandmother, born on March 8, 1938 to Lawrence and Anna (Wolfe) Long in Twin Rocks, Pennsylvania raised from an early age by her mother and Paul Clark her step dad. She was a lifelong resident of the Lansing area and joined the angels on July 4, 2010 at the age of 72. Evelyn met the love of her life, Dennis O'Connor, who would be her hero for 55 years, at West Junior High School. They enjoyed camping all over Michigan and making friends wherever they traveled. She could always be seen decorating for the holidays, especially Christmas, laughing, smiling, dancing, enjoying sunsets over Lake Michigan, and rooting for the Tigers or MSU Spartans. She will always be remembered for her strength in the face of adversity, her beautiful blue eyes and love of family. Happy Independence Day dear Lady! George E. Downard, age 81, of Tecumseh died peacefully on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor with his family at his side. He was born on Dec. 30, 1928, in Onsted, Mich., the son of Cecil K. and Nora (Withrow) Downard. He married Betty M. Handy, his bride of 55 years, on Aug. 12, 1950, until she preceded him in death on Nov. 1, 2005. George was a Tecumseh resident since 1950 after moving here from Tipton. He worked for the Tecumseh Products Co. for 38 years until he retired in 1984. He also, along with his wife, Betty, and their family, catered for many festivities and weddings for more than 25 years in the Lenawee, Monroe, Hillsdale, Jackson and Washtenaw county areas. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and was a proud member of the American Legion Post #34 and VFW Post #4187, both in Tecumseh; was a volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Drives; and truly enjoyed the outdoors, especially the times he spent hunting and camping. In recent years, when he wasn’t at the former Boomers Burgers or Big Boy, you could find him tinkering on “who knows what” and crafting at home. He fondly spoke of the times he spent with his family camping, playing cards and time spent up north. He will be missed by his family and all those who knew and loved him over the years. He is survived by his three sons, Douglas (Debra), Gregory (Tanya) and Christopher (Darlene), all of Tecumseh; his daughter, Laura S. Downard of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.; one brother, William “Leroy” (Judy) of Gwinn, Mich.; one sister, Juanita Cutchall of Frederic, Mich.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Cecil K., Donald D. and Alvin. At George’s request, cremation has taken place. His family will receive friends to remember and celebrate his life at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes on Tuesday, July 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. Inurnment of his cremated remains will take place at a later date in Lenawee Hills Memorial Cemetery, Tecumseh, with full Military Honors being conducted under the auspices of the Tecumseh American Legion and Tecumseh VFW. In November 1994, Marion and Richard moved to Topinabee where they have been since. Marion loved to cook. She enjoyed music being surrounded by her family. She attended the Berean Bible Church and CURVES. She is survived by her husband, Richard; children, Barbara (Ray) Hoff of Topinabee, James (Lori) Cummings of Topinabee, Kathleen Clancy of Tompinabee; seven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; brother, John DeJong of Topinabee; many nieces and nephews. Mary Elizabeth Olney died Sept. 6, 2009, in Orlando, Fla. She was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Detroit, a daughter of Joseph W. and Katherine (Kennedy) Pattison. Lt. William H. Olney, dressed in his officer’s Naval uniform, stepped off the elevator of the Aetna Building in Detroit and met the prettiest girl he had ever seen. They married in 1943. The war years were spent at air bases, where he was a pilot and flight instructor. After the war, they moved to Leonidas, where they lived and raised their children. Together they owned and operated Galesburg Michigan Speedway and Hastings Raceway. Mary managed the business aspect of the speedways. Mary is survived by her children, Dr. Mary (Doug) Anderson of Leonidas, and Lynda Olney (Dave) Robertson and Lucey Olney of Orlando; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her brother, Allen R. Pattison of Port Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, William H. Olney Jr.; and her brother, Joseph Pattison. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Mendon Cemetery, with the Rev. Canon Meredith Hunt of St. John’s Episcopal Church officiating. Mrs. Smoker provided years of dedicated service to the Branch County Courts, Federal Mogul and Community Health Center of Branch County. She was a lifelong and faith-filled member of St. Mary of Assumption Church, where she was a member of the Rosary Society. Mary was a devout Catholic, very devoted to the blessed Virgin. On Sept. 22, 1951, she married Marvin J. “Red” Smoker in Bronson. They shared 59 loving years together. In addition to her husband, Marvin, Mary is survived by her seven children, Marcia (Tom) Youngquist of West Bloomfield, Timothy (Brandi) Smoker of Concord, Carlene (Alan) Sosinski of Bronson, Randy (Vickie) Smoker of Bronson, Vince (Janine) Smoker of Milford, Jill (Tom) Duke of Coldwater and Julie (Chris) Staab of Marshall; her sister, Janet Yesh of Bronson; her brother, Leonard Kolassa of Garden City; 23 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mary Etta Whaley, 81, lifelong resident of Millersburg, passed away July 4, 2010 at Tendercare Health Center in Rogers City. Whaley was born August 18, 1928 in Onaway, Mich., the daughter of Herbert and Pearl (Whittaker) Stock. She was married to Homer Whaley on November 5, 1947 in Onaway. Mary Etta was a homemaker and farmer. She also worked outside of the home for Circuit Control and High-Q until 1990, when she retired. Her hobbies included fishing, gardening, sewing and horseback riding. She was an animal lover. She also enjoyed being a 4-H leader for many years. She is survived by her daughters, Lois (Donald) Crooks of Millersburg, Mary (Gary) Sias of Cheboygan, Betty (Larry) LaFave of Onaway and Missouri and Arlene Susan (Victor) Garms of Ocqueoc; a son, Elmer (Sandy) Whaley of Rogers City; 14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren; her brothers, Herbert Stock Jr. of Millersburg and Sam Stock of New Mexico; and her sisters, Lois (Bruce) Price of Onaway and Minnie (Jim) Wilkinson of Onaway. Preceding Mary Etta in death are her husband, Homer (December 1998); sisters, Louise McGrath, Betty Stock and Ruth Ellenberger; brother, Bill Stock; parents, Herbert and Pearl Stock; and step-mother, Minie Stock. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 6, 2010 from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral at 2 p.m. at the Chagnon Funeral Home. Elder Jim Morgan will officiate. She was born Jan. 11, 1927 in Jefferson Township to Ted M. and Grace (Edinger) Kelley. She was married Nov. 17, 1946 to Leo Ray “Eddie” Bernard and he preceded her in death Feb. 1, 1991.        Elsie was a lifelong farmer, a former employee of Kiddie Brush Company, worked for 10 years in the laundry at Hillsdale Community Health Center, and over 30 years as secretary in the Hillsdale County Fair Office. She was an avid garage saler, holding weekly garage sales for over 20 years. Elsie is survived by two sons, Karl (Jane) Bernard of Osseo and Kenton Bernard of Ocala, Fla.; a brother, Asa Elwyn (Helen) Kelley of Addison; a brother-in-law, Robert Caskey of North Adams; four grandchildren, Ian Bernard, Aaron (Jennifer) Bernard, Mark (Chris) Bernard and Alison (Curtis) Rearick; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.                                                         Besides her husband, Leo “Eddie” Bernard, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Wilford Lavere.                           Funeral services for Elsie C. Bernard will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Deacon Aaron Petersen officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Township.  Ernestene Graybill, 66, passed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She spent her final days at home surrounded by loved ones. She passed away July 3. She was born Ernestene Juanita Brooks on Sept. 18, 1943 to her parents, James and Marjorie (Doriell) Brooks. She graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1961. Ernestene married Maurice Olin Graybill on December 21, 1963. They were happily married 33 years. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, James Brooks, and one sister, Mary Louella Stump. She worked 20 years at Fayette Tubular Products and she was the owner/operator of A GraySwan Quilt shop. Ernestene is survived by four children, Peggy (Randy) Swander of Clayton, Linda (Josef) Swaney of Navarre Fla., James (Debbie) Graybill of Hubbard, Ohio, and Juanita (Jamie) Kelley of Adrian; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Nathan and Noah Swander of Clayton, and Ashley Swaney and Maurice Graybill of Navarre Fla.; two brothers, Tom Brooks of Onsted and Ivan (Velma) Brooks of Carleton, Mich.;four sisters, Donna Steele of Jonesville, Ruth Westgate of Onsted, Ann Rice of Onsted and Carol Brooks of Adrian. Also dearly loved by her husband’s brothers and sisters. She will be missed by loving friends and her church family. She was a longstanding member of Canandaigua Community Church. She started the Youth Group at the church and served as director for a number of years. She enjoyed spending time talking to everyone she knew. Ernestene also enjoyed quilting, card games, and vacationing with her family. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, July 10. Harland was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force and retired from Allied Products after 41 years of service. He was a member of Hillsdale Baptist Church and was an active member of the Senior Center Harmonica Group. Surviving besides his wife, Shirley, are two daughters, Lisa (Michael) Brink of Hillsdale and Connie McCutcheon of Colfax, Ind.; a son, Randy Bates of Hillsdale; a sister-in-law, Megan Bates of Paw Paw; a brother, Gene Doolittle of Hillsdale; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Harland was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Gary McCutcheon; a grandson, Shane; a sister, Genivie; two brothers, Harold Bates and Orin Doolittle. Memorial services for Harland E. She worked with the Camp Fire Girls for many years and enjoyed working at Confection Connection. Survivors include Scott (Rose) Goshorn of Ellsworth, Victoria (Jose) Dominguez of San Antonio, Texas, Terry (Kerry) Goshorn of Minnesota, Kelli (Pete) Schwendt of Crestview, Fla. and Heidi Goshorn of San Antonio, Texas, plus eight grandchildren; cousins, Linda (Bruce) Griffith and Betsy (John) Gordon; sisters and brothers-in-law include Leota Redding, Hillsdale, Helen Nelson, Jonesville, Leon (Carolyn) Goshorn, Hillsdale, Sharon Goshorn, Hillsdale, Sandra (Richard) Rockwood, Hillsdale and Becky Reh, Tellico Plains, Tenn. and many nieces and nephews. Ralph Morton Williamson, of Angola, Ind. passed away on Monday, July 5, 2010 at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital, at the age of 91. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He was born June 6, 1919, in Fort Wayne, Ind. to Arthur and Isora (Court) Williamson. He married Jane Eleanor (Atha) on March 29, 1947. They were married for 63 years. She preceded him in death on April 8, 2010. Ralph farmed in Northeast Indiana his whole life and hauled grain to the Andersons in Maumee, Ohio for many years. Ralph grew up in rural Fremont, and graduated from Scott Center High School in 1937. He formerly attended and was a member of the North Scott Christian Church.  He was passionate about antique cars and tractors. He was a friend to many area farmers. Ralph enjoyed wintering in Florida with his lovely wife Jane. He was a longtime member of the Steuben County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed fishing and was a Nascar fan. Survivors include daughters Sharon (Harley) Dodge of Angola, Ind. and Shirlee (Marty) Mitchell of Coldwater, grandchildren Lisa and Mark Viech, Brian and Lisa Dodge, Lynda and Jeff Kipp, Amy and Glen Kelly, Christa Dodge and Leslie Brown, 11 great-grandchildren, sister Elsie Williamson of Angola, Ind. and brother-in-law James Atha of Fremont, Ind. Ruby L. McCann, 87, of Howe, Ind., died Thursday, July 1, 2010, at Parkview LaGrange Hospital. She worked as a seamstress at Shadow Interiors in Shipshewana, Ind., and had lived most of her life in LaGrange County. She spent many years on Big Long Lake. She was born Oct. 29, 1922, in DeKalb County, Ind., to William and Dessie (Whitman) Diehm. On Feb. 11, 1939, she married Walter E. McCann in Waterloo, Ind. He preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1991. Surviving are a daughter, Alice D. Walker of Nancy, Ky.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Walter L. “Butch” and Sharon McCann of Howe, Ind., and Daniel J. McCann of LaGrange; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Rice of Centreville; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren;six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Garcile Brandeberry of Corunna, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Larry J. McCann in September 1994; three sisters; and a brother. Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange. Russell Hugh Miller, age 62 of Tecumseh died peacefully in his home with his family by his side on Saturday, July 3, 2010. He was born on April 20, 1948, in Adrian, the son of the late Russell H. and Imogene M. (Walker) Miller of Clinton where he grew up. He made his home with his loving partner, Yvonne Guerra, for the past 16 years and she survives. Hugh was a veteran of the United States Naval Reserve. He was a heavy equipment operator for 37 years and had worked for E. W. Garlick Co., MacLean Construction Co., and Dan’s Excavating. He was a member of the Tecumseh VFW Post #4187 and the Adrian Moose Lodge #1034. One of his greatest passions was flying. He had his pilot’s license for over 40 years and had received his instrument rating and commercial flight rating. He enjoyed the time spent with his loving family and friends and will be forever missed by all those who knew and loved him. In addition to Yvonne, Hugh is survived by his brother, R. Hudson (Judy ) Miller of Sparta, Mich.; his sister, Sally Jane Wilson of Tecumseh; his niece Connie (Parish) Geers and their children, Preston, Paige, Parker and Payton; his nephews, Robert Miller and David (Angela) VanEtten and their children, David Lee, Alexandria and Joshua. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Clinton Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Dr. Lorraine Grinnell officiating. He enjoyed yard work and was known to be able to fix anything. Surviving are his very loving wife, Rmentie Inez Carpenter of Sturgis; two daughters, Kaila Riquelle Wright and Kirstan Kay Sawyer, both of White Pigeon; a son, Noah Ronald-Lee Rowe of Sturgis; a grandson, Seth Benjamine Wright; mother, Linda S. Carpenter, and father, Douglas J. Carpenter of Sturgis; a brother, Chad (Paula)Carpenter of Sturgis; two sisters, Danielle (David)Carpenter-Garl, Amanda (DanielKeifer)Carpenter of Sturgis; loving mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dan and Jamie Hershberger of Sturgis; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousin and many friends. Thomas J. Keenan Thomas Joseph Keenan, age 84, of St. Clair Shores, died July 4, 2010. He was born in Detroit on February 4, 1926. He bravely served his country in the United States Marine Corps. during World War ll and Korea; fighting battles at Okinawa, Peleleu and the Chosin Reservoir, receiving numerous medals and citations including the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart. In 1954 he married Charlotte M. King and began his family while moving about the country with the U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. Immigration Service from which he retired in 1980. He returned to college receiving his master's degree in criminal justice from Wayne State University in 1983. Tom was a devoted parishioner of St. Isaac Jogues Parish for 46 years. He was an active member of the VFW Bruce Post 1146 and the ritual team. He was a longtime coach of youth baseball, softball and hockey. He was a talented artist, voracious reader, history buff and sports enthusiast. His Christian sensibilities, family devotion, captivating storytelling and giant sense of humor will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret O'Donnell, father Peter Keenan, and sister Kathleen Keenan. He is survived by his wife Charlotte (King) Keenan, brother Peter Keenan and sister-in-law, Rita of Claremont Calif.; children Thomas J. Keenan Jr. and daughter-in-law Pamela of Argyle, Texas, Mary M. (Keenan) DeVore and son-in-law Doug of Anchorage, Alaska, daughter Kristine A. (Keenan) Nicholas and son-in-law Glenn of Brooks, Ky. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Keenan, Hannah, Trey, Katy, and Caelan. Visitation Wednesday, July 7 from 2:30-9 p.m. at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson, St. Clair Shores. William H. Olney Jr. died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, in Orlando, Fla. Bill was born March 9, 1967, in Fort Pierce, Fla., a son of William H. and Mary Elizabeth (Pattison) Olney. He spent most of his childhood in Michigan. He was a graduate of Colon High School and the University of Central Florida. He graduated from Stetson Law School, St. Petersburg, Fla, in 1994 and was class president. Bill was from a medical family and spent his professional career defending physicians and hospitals. Shortly before his death, he became a partner in his Orlando law firm. Bill’s parents owned stock car race tracks, and Bill grew up with, and loved, automobile racing. He was a poet, a storyteller and he loved to laugh. Bill is survived by his sisters, Dr. Mary (Doug) Olney Anderson of Leonidas, Lynda (Dave) Robertson and Lucey Olney, both of Orlando; and by nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Mendon Cemetery with the Rev. Canon Meredith Hunt of St. John’s Episcopal Church officiating. Assistance was provided by the Eickhoff Funeral Home of Mendon.

Wilma Jane Scott, age 89, of Adrian died on Friday, July 2, 2010, at the University of Michigan Medical Center. She was born on Oct. 11, 1920, in Fairfield Township to William K. and Evangeline (Mickens) Nelson. She graduated from Sand Creek High School in 1937, was certified to teach from Lenawee County Normal, earned her BA from Adrian College and her master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. She had taught in Lenawee County Schools for over 30 years. She was married to Elwood E. French in November 1941 in Fairfield Township. He preceded her in death in November 1957. On Sept. 1, 1961, she married Harlan W. Hill in Seneca. He preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1987. She then married J. Ronald Scott on Feb. 14, 1992, in Adrian and he survives. Jane was a member of the First Church of the Brethren, where she served as pianist. In addition to her husband, Ron, she is survived by her children, Sally (Tom) Graf of Adrian, Deborah (Robert) Meister of Clare, Jeffrey R. (Marianne) Scott of Minneapolis, Minn., James S. Scott of Jackson, and Henry W. (Krista) Scott of Waxhaw, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Dorothy (John) French Johnson of Indian River; a sister, Ruth Bartlett of Fairfield; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. In addition to her first and second husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Herman Nebelung; two brothers, Edwin Nelson in infancy and William K. Nelson, Jr.; a sister, Harriett Evangeline Mattis; a son, James E. French; and two grandchildren, Cody and Brittany Graf. Funeral services for Jane will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with Pastor David Morton officiating. Burial will be in Ogden Zion Cemetery.
