David L. Huss, age 69, of Sturgis, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, at the home of his niece in Schoolcraft. He was born June 7, 1941, in Sturgis, a son of the late Warren and Faye (Sunday) Huss. David was a lifelong Sturgis resident and member of the Eagles Lodge #1314 and the Loyal Order of Moose #574. For 40 years he had been employed as a forklift operator at Americraft Carton in Sturgis. He is survived by one niece, Linda (Kim) Gerow of Schoolcraft; and several great-nieces, great-nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and a brother. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. A private graveside service and burial will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. Delbert M. “Del” Petermann, of West Bend, Wis., died peacefully July 5, 2010, at the age of 87. He was born Aug. 10, 1922, in the town of Auburn, Wis., to the late Henry and Esther (nee Schaefer) Petermann. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Arleigh (nee Ehnert) and his brother, Lloyd. He is survived by four loving daughters: Karen (Kari) Eckhardt (Edward) of Grafton; Kathleen (John) Limbach of West Bend; Judith (Tom) Frank of State College, Pa.; and Jeaneen (Brian) Hall of Sturgis.    “Grandpa Pete’s” eight grandchildren: Ed, Christine, John (Tammy), Adam (Jenny), Drew (Phoenicia), Nicole (Tom), Aaron and Gretchen (fiancé Jason) were one of the great joys of his life. He is also survived by a great-grandchild, April; a sister-in-law, LaVerne Petermann of Auburn,; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Delbert was widely known and well-respected in the West Bend area. He worked for over 45 years at the West Bend Company, missing only three days of work during that span. The other great joy in Delbert’s life was serving his Lord at Pilgrim and St. Andrew Lutheran churches, whether he was pulling weeds in the flowerbeds or counting the Sunday contributions. He was a church council officer, elder, Sunday School teacher, youth director, usher and tireless committee member.   Del was considered a “cornerstone” of the Kettle Moraine Dartball League in which he played for 68 years. Del was elected to the Wisconsin Dartball Hall of Fame in 2010. International Lutheran Laymen’s League, AAL, Camp Luwisomo, Living Word Lutheran High School, and Bethesda Lutheran Home will miss Delbert’s lifelong generosity, support and participation.  “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Funeral services for Delbert will be held at 11 a.m.  Saturday at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Farmington, Wis.  The Rev. Robert Korytkowski will officiate and lunch will follow the church service.  Interment will take place following lunch at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Fane. Relatives and friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum, Wis.,  and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service at the church. Donald E. Smoker, 60, of Howe, Ind., died unexpectedly Friday, July 9, 2010, at his home. He was a 1967 Sturgis High School graduate who excelled in Athletics. He was a Navy veteran who served his country during the Vietnam War. Donald retired from Ross Labs in Sturgis, where he worked in the shipping and receiving department. He was a past deacon of the Lima Presbyterian Church in Howe, supported the Disabled American Veterans and was an avid Notre Dame fan. He was born July 27, 1949, in Battle Creek, a son of Donald F. and Patricia A. (Stewart) Smoker. On May 24, 1969, he married Julie Thomae at the Lima Presbyterian Church in Howe. She survives in Howe. Also surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Chris Smoker of Howe and Matt and Alexis Smoker of Sturgis; a granddaughter (who was the love of his life) Rachel Olivia Smoker; and a brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Kelly Smoker of Lima, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Terry Smoker. According to his wishes, cremation will take place. Dorothy Jean Hoag, 76, went to “Heaven to rock the babies” on Monday, July 5, 2010 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. She was born Jan. 28, 1934 to Harold and Blanche (Cary) Gary in Coldwater. She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband of 25 years “Hoagie” A.F. Hoag, daughter Pamela (Hoad) Eck, grandson Christian F. Hoag, brothers Raymond and “Red” H. Gary and stepson Rodney R. Hoag. She is survived by daughter Carol S. Hoag, sister and brother-in-law S. Kenneth and Alice and Lowder, grandsons Nick and David Hoag and stepson David Hoag, special friend Kyle Fry and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Dorothy retired from Ft. Dearborn Printing, formerly Eagle Printing Company, Coldwater and was the first female supervisor to be employed in their plant. She previously was employed by Crotty Corp., Quincy as a supervisor for many years. Dorothy was known to have a quick smile, great laugh, kind word, sympathetic ear, great sense of humor and wit and love of fun and life, always “ready to get this party started.” She was an avid card player known to be almost unbeatable at pinocle or cribbage or hearts and will be missed greatly by her fellow bunco club members that include her sister Alice, with whom she has met with for over 20 years. Dorothy was devoted to her family and mostly will be missed by her family and friends for her eternal spirit, faithful friendship and unconditional love and support. Cremation has taken place and she will be interred at Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date. The family requests that you please join them for a memorial luncheon in honor and celebration of Dorothy’s life on Friday, July 16, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the American Legion Post #52, 84 W. Elizabeth Glasser, 48, of Morenci passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at home. She was born on March 8, 1962, in Flint, the daughter of Hubert and Anne (Elliott) Erickson. On Sept. 11, 1982, in the Irish Hills she married Donald Glasser and he survives. Elizabeth has lived in Morenci since 1990, moving from the Irish Hills. She was a graduate of Clinton High School and furthered her education at Siena Heights where she earned her teaching degree.  Elizabeth was a member of Our Lady of Mercy in Fayette, Ohio. Besides her husband, Don, Elizabeth is survived by a daughter, Anne Glasser; a son, Edward Glasser; and two brothers, Arthur Erickson of Manitou Beach and Phillip Erickson of Okemos.   Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Edward Erickson. Elizabeth Anne Eddy Plummer (Betsy) died January 14, 2010, at Grace of Douglas. Memorial Service is 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Community Church of Douglas, 6780 W. Wiley Rd.   She was born in Ann Arbor on December 4, 1921, to Ben and Esther Eddy. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Louis F. Plummer Jr.; son, Louis F. Plummer III; her parents, Benjamin H. and Esther P. Eddy; and sister, Susan S. Eddy. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth M. and Richard E. Wolf; son, Andrew P. Plummer; granddaughters, Rikanda Weston, Robyn Henry, Nicte-ha Price; sisters, Barbara Crandell, Joan Brigham, Joyce Plummer, Patricia Woods; as well as nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren great-nieces/nephews. Her extended family valued integrity, the natural world, the use of words, intellectual pursuits, musical expression, open hearted hospitality and loyalty to family, with frequent clan gatherings. These values formed and guided her life. She attended Camp Interlochen under the tutelage of art counselor, Gwen Frostic. After high school she attended Albion College, before serving in World War II as a Navy WAVE, Pharmacist Mate. She met Lou from Ganges December of 1946 and married July 14, 1947. They raised three children in Flint and summered in Douglas/Ganges. In 1990, they settled in Douglas. In July of 2009, they joyfully celebrated their 63rd anniversary.  Dad was very proud of this accomplishment. Betsy had a passion for the arts. She sang with the Flint Community Chorus. Jitterbug and swing always got her feet tapping. Poetry and story telling were avocations for her. After her kids were grown,  she enrolled at the University of Michigan-Flint branch to refine her innate literary skills. She attended classes at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago-Oxbow Campus in Saugatuck, exploring writing and expressive movement. Elizabeth demonstrated her love of others and care for her community by: efforts to protect land from development and preserve for park/recreation use, initiate a neighborhood watch to assist children with problems, going to and from school,  led women’s Bible studies; and volunteered in weekly visits to nursing home patients. Following the reception at the church at 4:15 p.m. is Graveside Service; Plummerville Cemetery, Lakeshore Dr., Ganges  (south of 121st St.). At 6 p.m. is Buffet & Sharing at Beech Hurst Farmhouse, 121 Ferry St. (south of Center St.), Douglas.   |

Fredericka Teske, 80, of Adrian passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti. Fredericka was born on Dec. 3, 1929, in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of Fred J. and Verna (Snyder) St. Clair. On May 3, 1946, she was united in marriage to Richard LaVern Teske in Adrian, Mich. He preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1964. Fredericka devoted her life to her family and home. She loved surrounding herself with her children and grandchildren whenever given the opportunity. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Adrian and was a member of the Eagles. Some of her favorite pastimes included playing cards and going dancing. Surviving are her three children, Garry (Ganina) Teske of Rives Junction, Larry (Marianne) Teske of Adrian and Susan (Mike) Barber of Adrian; two sisters, Dorothy La France of Adrian, Marlene (Bob) Van Valkenburg of Adrian, and a sister-in-law, Esther (Ron) Mc Nair of Adrian; 11 granchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Richard, she was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and two sisters. A graveside service to celebrate the life of Fredericka will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Raisin Valley Cemetery in Adrian. Gary Provo, age 69, of Cheboygan, died early Tuesday morning, June 29, 2010. He was born in Cheboygan on February 2, 1941, the son of Francis H. and Myrtle Irene (Trudeau) Provo. Gary was employed for over 35 years at Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, retiring in 2005. Following his retirement, he went to work part-time for Louie’s Market. Gary liked to help other people; he was very active in his church, the 7th Day Adventist Church, and since his retirement loved to travel. Gary recently married the former Marge Matts, on May 2, 2010 in Cheboygan. He is survived by his wife, Marge; his son, Gary A. (Kara) Provo of Cheboygan; his granddaughter, Leah Jean Provo; his step-children, Nick (Michelle), Mike, Matt (Sky), Jason (Stacey), Desiree, Ashley, Amy and Amanda; 11 step-grandchildren; a brother, Dean Provo of Cheboygan; and sister, Theresa (Don) Parrott of Indian River. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Ann; sister, Bonnie Monville; and grandmother, Belle Provo. Cremation has taken place. Genevieve M. Smoke, 88, of Hudson passed away Monday, July 12, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility surrounded by her family. She was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Dearborn, Mich., to Fred and Sophia (Felhauer) Waldecker. She married Joseph Daniel “J.D.” Smoke on Aug. 14, 1954, in Angola, Ind., and he preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 2000. Genevieve was a life-long Hillsdale County and Lenawee County  area resident. She enjoyed cooking and family gatherings.   Surviving Genevieve are four children, Barbara Zmich of Chicago, Ill., Galen (Lana) Smoke and Darlene (Jack) Elliott, all of Hudson, and Deborah Hephner of North Adams; one brother, William (Darlene) Waldecker of Hillsdale. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Dorothy Fredrick; brother, Fred Waldecker; granddaughter, Amanda Yeider; and son in-law, John Hephner. Funeral services for Genevieve will be Thursday, July 15, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Matthew SeGraves officiating. Interment will follow at Waldron Cemetery. She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Mildred Phillips and Katheryn Clark, both of Sturgis; a nephew, Roy (Alana) Clark of Sturgis; two nieces, Judy (Shirley) Norris and Nancy (John) Maystead, both of Sturgis; and several great nieces and great nephews. Jack H. Woosley Jr. Jack H. Woosley Jr., age 78, of Romeo, passed away on July 13, 2010. He was born August 17, 1931, the son of Jack H. and Dorothy L. (Newell) Woosley, Sr. Jack married Carolyn J. Buerger on April 21, 1951, in Redford. He retired after 31 years at the General Motors Tech Center. Jack was a member of St. Thomas Presbyterian Church. Survived by his beloved children, Thomas (Donna) H. Woosley of Holiday, Fla., Sharon (Jim) K. Luth of Macomb; six beloved grandchildren and two great-grandsons. James A. Fairchild, 89, of Three Rivers, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, at Three Rivers Health. He was born April 6, 1921, on the family farm in Florence Township, a son of Ernest and Florence M. (Kelley) Fairchild. On May 20, 1948, he married Thelma Weber at the Centreville Presbyterian Church. Jim worked and operated the family farm until he retired in 1985. He also worked as a Three Rivers Hospital attendant. Jim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Three Rivers/Centreville, where he worked at one time or another on each board. He served on the Lockport Township Board  for 22 yrs, 13 as its treasurer; the Lockport-Fabius Park Fire Board  for 17 years; and the Agricultural Stabilization Committee for more than 20 years. Jim was a St. Joseph Farm Bureau lifetime member, and Junior Farm Bureau and St. Joseph County 4-H leader. Jim also served on the Gov. G. Mennon Williams Agricultural Advisory Board. Surviving Jim are his wife, Thelma Fairchild; daughters Carla Jean (Will) McDonald of Bennettsville,  S.C., and Louann (Lee) Bitely of Bitely; son Charles Fairchild of Sturgis; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister Lola Musser of Portage.   He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister Kathleen Fairchild. Relatives and friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Eley Funeral Home in Centreville, where religious services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Marilyn Schlimgen, First Congregational United Church of Christ, Constantine, officiating.   Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers. James Eugene “Jim” Marcum, Sr., passed away Monday, July 12, 2010, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 79. Jim was born in Rowan County, Ky., on Feb. 27, 1931, to William and Chloe (Hall) Marcum, one of six children. He attended Fort Gay High School and dreamed of becoming a pilot with the Air Force. Upon discovering he had severe color blindness he went on to become one of the first very few jet engine mechanics at the time in the USAF. After his honorable military discharge he left for southern Michigan, where he met and married the love of his life, Joyce Dowling, on March 29, 1956, and they began their life together. His work career included time as a plumbing apprentice, construction, and working at the Clinton Engine Company. He later retired, in 1992, from the Ford Motor Company after spending 30 years at the Rawsonville facility. The family spent many fun times at their cabin on Houghton Lake, enjoying snowmobiling, hunting, being with friends, and all the experiences of lake life. After his retirement he became an accomplished woodworker and shared his creations with all his family members. Jim did not shy away from the recent technology boom; but rather embraced the creation of new skills on the PC and digital photography. He was also a member of the Southern Michigan Antique Tractor and Engine Association (SMATEA) and the American Legion Pieper-Hall-Sparks Post #176, Clinton, of which he was the longest continuous member. Jim cherished the many close friends he came upon in life and always was ready to lend a hand to any and all in need. He will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. Jim leaves to mourn his loving wife of more than 54 years, Joyce, and five children; James and Vickie Marcum of Dyer, Ind., Tim and Linda (Gamboe) of Clinton, Tammy and Dennis Sweet of Clinton, Thom and Cindy (Lindh) of Britton and Mike Marcum of Fishers, Ind.  Jim was truly blessed and very proud by his 10 awesome grandchildren who lightened his life without end; Zachary Marcum of Los Angeles, Calif., Jenna Marcum of Livonia, Jese Marcum of Clinton, Randi (Casidy) Reiser of Clinton, Ryan Seiser (fianceé Catey DiCenzo) of Columbus, Ohio, Marcus (Emily) Seiser of Georgia, Cassel and Anne Marcum of Britton, and Andrew and Alex Marcum of Onsted. Jim’s life was also blessed with the time he was able to know and love his great-grandson, Mitchel James Reiser, also of Clinton. The family will receive friends, share our sadness of his leaving, and enjoy the many great stories and memories he was able to leave in our heart on Wednesday, July 14, at the Clinton Chapel of the Handler Funeral Homes from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Richard Mortimer of the First Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh, will officiate. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Clinton with full Military Honors under the auspices of the Clinton American Legion. Keith E. Barnell, 72, of Portage, died Friday, July 2, 2010, at his home, following an extended illness. He was born Sept. 10, 1937, in Scott, Ind., a son of Everett C. and Venona L. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Connelly Funeral Home in Cassopolis. Officiating will be the Rev. Lillian M. Swihart, 78, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday morning, July 11, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Aug. 18, 1931, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Clarence and Lucile (Berry) Walters. Lillian was a lifelong Sturgis-area resident and a graduate of Brighton High School in Brighton, Ind., with the class of 1950. On Oct. 5, 1952, she married Melvin K. Stukey. This marriage ended in divorce, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2008. On Nov. 8, 1975, she was united in marriage with Stewart D. Swihart Sr. in Sturgis. He died Aug. 29, 2009. She had been employed by the First National Bank in Sturgis from 1971 until her retirement in 1990. Prior to that she had been employed by J.C. Penney in Sturgis from 1948-1965. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sturgis where she taught Sunday school from 1953-1963 and served as president of Lutherettes in 1963 and had also served as president of the Ladies Mission Circle. Lillian was always very active in the Sturgis community. Some of her involvements included holding the office of president with the Sturgis Band and Orchestra Parents Association in 1970, the Modern Mother’s Club, Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary 1994-1996, Sturgis Women’s Club, 1996-1998 and the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild. She served as treasurer of the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild and the Sturgis Women’s Club. She was a charter member of the Sturgis Hospital Popcorn Guild. Lillian was named Sturgis Citizen of the Year in 1998 and received the Sturgis Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds in 1995. Lillian was instrumental in the establishment of the Tree of Love at the Sturgis Hospital. She is survived by a daughter, Christine (Duane) Gonser of Sturgis; a son, Jon (Cara Davis) Stukey of Sturgis; four grandchildren, April (Galen) Geigley, Andrew Mathews, Steven Mathews and Tori Stukey; three great-grandchildren, Carina Geigley, Cierra Geigley and Jonathan Mathews; a sister, Donna (Frank) Krontz of Sturgis; a brother, Clarence (Elaine) Walters of Quincy; a stepson, Stew (Donna) Swihart II of Howe, Ind.; three step-grandchildren, Scott Swihart, Steven (Lisa) Swihart and Cathy (Kurt) Stevens; longtime close and caring friend, Joyce Shinn of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Lillian Wisdom Thornton, 93 years old, joined her beloved husband, Robert, on July 12, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. He preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 1992. Lillian was the daughter of Will Henry and Donie Bradford Wisdom.  She was one of 11 children born to her parents, all of whom are deceased. Lillian was employed by Peerless Gear until her retirement in 1978. She was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church. One of Lillian’s greatest joys was making quilts for her children and grandchildren, all of which will be treasured for a lifetime. Lois Jordan, age 95 of Lansing, formerly of Clinton, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at the Grandhaven Living Center, Lansing, with her loving family at her bedside. She was born in Livingston, Tenn., on July 19, 1914, the daughter of Sidney and Sallie (Clark) Harward. She was united in marriage with Truman Jordan on Jan. 5, 1936, in Livingston, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 1996. Lois moved to Lansing from Clinton in 1992. She attended the Lansing Trinity Methodist Church and was a member of the Lansing Area Patchers, and a former member of Adrian Quilt Guild. Lois lived on a farm near Macon, Mich., for many years where she raised chickens and sold their eggs. Lois is survived by a daughter, Lenora (Gene) Rathbun of Lansing; a son, Truman H. (Linda) Jordan of Mt. Margaret (Marge) Frances Thiele, age 90, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at Sturgis Hospital. She was born July 14, 1919, in Chicago, a daughter of the late Anthony L. and Margaret (Miller) Schuster. Marge started her career in Chicago, working as a secretary in an advertising agency. There, she met Frederic W. Thiele Sr. They were married in 1941. During the early 1940s she was stationed with her husband on U.S. Army assignments in St. Louis, Seattle, Yokohama, Japan, and Fort Sheridan, Ill.  In 1942, they made Brookside Farm, Colon, their permanent home. In 1984, Marge moved to Sturgis. While living in Colon, she was an active member of the Colon Garden Club, the Colon library board, local school PTA’s, and was a founding member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church. Marge enjoyed gatherings, gardening, oil painting, traveling and volunteer work for her church, the St. Joseph County Council on Aging and the Pregnancy Crisis Line. While a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church for the past 25 years, she had been very active in the altar society, Holy Angels Seniors and prayer circles. She enjoyed 20 years of traveling that took her all over the world: Israel, Russia, Egypt, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Ireland and all throughout the British Isles.  Her painting also brought her much joy. She not only painted, but also attended many art classes, and exhibited her art in shows at the Sturges Young Auditorium. She was married to Frederic William Thiele Sr. for 34 years. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1975. Surviving Marge are her children, Carolyn (Kenneth) Hall of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Anne (Richard) Messner of Sturgis; daughter-in-law Elizabeth Jane (Thiele) Pinder of Conifer, Colo.; a goddaughter, Margaret (George) Dinklenburg of Libertyville, Ill.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth (Mark) Knudsen of Rockport, Mass., Stephanie (Benjamin) Bolton of Sautee, Ga., Anthony (Kate) Messner of Sturgis, Frederic (Brianne) Thiele of Dusseldorf, Germany, and Michael Pinder of Conifer; great-grandchildren Kai and Masha Knudsen, Adelyn, Clayton, and Aubrey Bolton, and Aiden and Giselle Thiele. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Frederic William Thiele Jr.; father and mother-in-law, Victor and Ida Thiele; and three sisters, Dolores (LeRoy) Scheffner, Lucille Schuster and Rosemary Schuster. Marian Lundy, age 79, of Holland went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 10, 2010. She passed away after a short and very courageous battle with cancer surrounded by her family. Marian was born in Holland to Henry and Josie Tubergan.  She attended Holland High School and later married Jack Lundy, her husband of 56 years. She was a long time member of Harderwyk Church where they raised their family. She retired from Russ’ Restaurants to spend more time with her family and time at their vacation home in East Jordan. She was preceded in death by her sisters Janet, Evelyn, Ethel and Esther. Marion Cummings, 85, of Topinabee, passed away Thursday, July 1, 2010. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, July 5, at the Berean B ible Church in Topinabee. Seh was the daughter of John and Effie (Huizenga) DeJong. Marion grew up in Chicago and graduated from Parker High School. After graduationg she went to work with tthe Foott Brothers, a factory producing material to support World War Two. On July 28, 1945 she married Richard E. Cummings in Chicago where the couple made their home and raised their family. Marion was employsed as a Home Health Aid for many years. In November 1994, Marion and Richard moved to Topinabee where they have been since. Marion loved to cook. She enjoyed music being surrounded by her family. She attended the Berean Bible Church and CURVES. She is survived by her husband, Richard; children, Barbara (Ray) Hoff of Topinabee, James (Lori) Cummings of Topinabee, Kathleen Clancy of Tompinabee; seven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; brother, John DeJong of Topinabee; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Marion was preceded in death by her grandson Richard Hoff, and her sisters Dorothy Ray and Annabelle Berndt.   Mase, a 1960 graduate of Onaway High School, worked for the Michigan State Department of Highway and for Cheboygan Memorial Hospital in the maintenance department. His passion and talent for fishing took him to Grand Marais in the summers and his winters were spent in Tower carving and painting decoys, which are admired by many. His kind heart and generosity will be missed by all. Mase is survived by his four children, Beth (Brian) Flynn, Edward (Barb) Mason, Lynda (Al) Hererra and Patrick (Sharla) Mason. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Sam, Nick, Shelby, Faith, Katie and Scarlett. He will be sadly missed by his dear companion, Tess Burfield, and his close friend and cousin, Lawrence Veihl. Whaley was born August 18, 1928 in Onaway, Mich., the daughter of Herbert and Pearl (Whittaker) Stock. She was married to Homer Whaley on November 5, 1947 in Onaway. Mary Etta was a homemaker and farmer. She also worked outside of the home for Circuit Control and High-Q until 1990, when she retired. Her hobbies included fishing, gardening, sewing and horseback riding. She was an animal lover. She also enjoyed being a 4-H leader for many years. Edson, 82, of White Pigeon, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, at Three Rivers Health, following a short illness He was born Feb. 20, 1928, in LaGrange County, Ind., a son of Myrle J. and Lela Fae (Mock) Edson. He had been a resident of Fish Lake and White Pigeon all of his life. He was a 1946 graduate of Scott High School. On Oct. 15, 1950, he married Marilyn Stubig at White Pigeon United Methodist Church. He retired from construction sales and service in White Pigeon after 42 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Edson, of White Pigeon; a daughter, Judy Oxender of Constantine; a son, Monte Edson of White Pigeon; a grandson, Matthew Oxender of Shipshewana, Ind.; a great-grandson, Nicholas Oxender; two sisters, Susan (Robert) Hill of Sturgis and Linda (Richard) Troyer of White Pigeon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Diana Aulbach and Patricia Kalb. Visitation will take place 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Wilbur Brandli officiating. Burial will follow in White Pigeon Township Cemetery. |

Beverly J. Robison, of Osseo, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born July 15, 1922, in Jefferson Township, the daughter of Carlton and Hattie (Black) Dilworth. On March 25, 1939, she married Willis R. Robison and he preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 2004. She is survived by four children, Raymond (Joyce) Robison of Osseo, Richard Robison of Osseo, LeeAnn (Gary) Patterson of Osseo and Joy (David) Drumm of Woodbridge Township; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one twin sister, Roberta Gilpin and several nieces and nephews. David Watson Bailey, 70, of Osseo, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010 at Evergreen Manor, Montpelier, Ohio. He was born April 9, 1940 in Ann Arbor,and graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1958. David worked at South Central Michigan Power Agency in Litchfield and he was a member and past officer of the Elks Lodge in Hillsdale. David attended New Hope United Brethren Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and playing pool. He was an avid bird watcher and especially loved spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Moreen (Carter) Bailey, whom he married Aug. 4, 1990; daughters. Frank E. Baker, 75, of Brooklyn, Mich., passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. He was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Detroit to Frank James and Ruth Catherine (Mowery) Baker. Frank was an avid hunter and fisherman and he truly loved the outdoors. He also spent time refinishing antiques.  For the last 20 years, Frank was a landscaper at a private estate in Utica, Mich., on which he developed and maintained a small exclusive golf course. Surviving are two siblings, Elsie Westlake of Brooklyn and James (Rena) Baker of Hillsdale, along with nine nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Vivian Brigle and Helen Moore, and a niece. Genevieve M. Smoke, 88, of Hudson passed away Monday, July 12, 2010, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility surrounded by her family. She was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Dearborn to Fred and Sophia (Felhauer) Waldecker. She married Joseph Daniel “J.D.” Smoke on Aug. 14, 1954, in Angola, Ind. and he preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 2000. Genevieve was a lifelong Hillsdale County and Lenawee County area resident. She enjoyed cooking and family gatherings. Howard D. Hawkins, age 59 of Addison, died on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in Three Rivers, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born on Feb. 19, 1951 in Addison to Robert C. and Marilyn L. (Ebbert) Hawkins.  He married Kay Young on May 6, 1978 in Hillsdale and she survives. Howard lived in the Addison area all his life.  He graduated from Addison High School in 1969.  He was formerly employed at Merillat Industries in Adrian for over 20 years, and he was also a carpenter and involved in the family farm.  He loved nature and he loved planting trees. Surviving are three sons, Craig (Carri) Hawkins of Coldwater, Douglas Hawkins and Thomas Hawkins, both of Addison; two brothers, Bruce (Patricia) Hawkins of Addison, Richard (Patricia J.) Hawkins of Osseo; one sister, Julia Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga.; several nephews and nieces. Kathryn Tremaine Brown, 91, of Buchanan, Mich., passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 17, 2009, at the Buchanan Meadows Living Center, with her son, William and daughter-in-law, Nancy at her side. Keith Edward Roberts, 75, of Jonesville, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, surrounded by family and friends at Drews Place Village Green in Hillsdale. He was born July 22, 1934, in Angola, Ind., to Edward and Harriett Roberts, who preceded him in death along with one sister, Ruth Batterson of Coldwater. He was married Nov. 26, 1960, to Jane C. Crider of Chicago and she preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 2009, after nearly 49 years of marriage. Surviving are two daughters, Renae (Tom) Stritzinger of Grand Rapids and Amy (Chris) Fast of Hillsdale; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Abigail, and Madeline Stritzinger and Bennett and Ridley Fast. Also surviving is one sister, Pearl “Puckie” Luck of Ionia. Keith grew up in Dearborn Heights and Coldwater, where he graduated from St. Charles Catholic High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tri-State University in 1960 after serving two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as an agent for AAA Insurance in Hillsdale until 1978 when he purchased the Thompson-Roberts Agency in Jonesville. He owned and operated the agency until his retirement in 2001. An avid golfer, boater, and gardener, Keith was also an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale for almost 50 years. He enjoyed annual weekends at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills. Along with his wife, he volunteered his time to historical building restoration projects and other community services. He also served as president of the Hillsdale Lions Club. A mass of Christian burial for Keith Edward Roberts will take place at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 9 with Fr. Thomas Butler officiating. Our loving mother, Leota M. Grubbs, 84, of near Hillsdale, went to be with her Lord early Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Hillsdale Community Health Center, Hillsdale, following an illness. Born May 19, 1926, near Montpelier, Ohio, to Leona Irene Humbarger and Oliver Delbert Stantz, she was married to Carl V. Grubbs, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1971. A homemaker, Leota had been a Hillsdale County resident most of her adult life and is survived by her companion of 39 years, Frank Niner; two sons, William Ray (Dee) Grubbs, Cambridge, and Carlos Ray (Linda) Grubbs, Hillsdale; three daughters, Patricia Ann (Leo) Bernath, Montpelier, Bonnie Sue (Marlowe) Eidenier, Camden, and Sharon Kay (Rick) Hill Jr., Osseo; 17 grandchildren, several great- and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Stantz, Montpelier; and one sister, Lois (Paul) Clark, Bryan, Ohio. Martha Ann Bonfiglio-Johnstone, 72, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010. Martha was a 1956 graduate of Hillsdale High School and a 1960 graduate of Siena Heights University. She taught 30 years for the Lansing Diocese, 25 of those at Our Lady of Fatima, Michigan Center (1977-2002). Other schools were St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Pius X and St. Michael’s of Flint. She was also a CCD teacher at St. Mary’s of Jackson and Our Lady of Fatima (1990-1994). Martha was honored three times in “Who’s Who of American Teachers”. She was a former member of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, Jackson Musical Theatre, Clark Lake Players, Queen’s Choir and Our Lady of Fatima Choir. Martha is survived by her four children and 11 grandchildren: Christopher (Chip and Karen) Johnstone (Kyle, Casey and Caleb), Mary Johnstone (Solomon and Alexandria Blair), Nancy Bellers (Edward, Rafe, Cindy and Riley), and David (Melisa) Johnstone (Anthony and Brea Marie). One sister survives, Nancy Bonfiglio Dogan of Wayne, Pa., two nephews and a niece. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie; two brothers, Natale Jr. and Anthony and her parents, Natale and Ruth Bonfiglio, all of Hillsdale. The Mass of The Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 711 N. Francis St., Jackson, with the Reverend James Shaver officiating. Thelma L. Johnson, 86, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 10, 2010. Thelma was born to Elmer and Cora Lampman, just east of Quincy on Maple Hill Farm. She graduated from Bronson High School in 1941. She is survived by her husband of nearly 66 years, the Rev. Donald J. Johnson; sons, Terry (Dona) Johnson, LaPorte, Ind. and Gary (Jan) Johnson, Parma; daughters, Judy (Ron) Mueller, Hillsdale and Jan Johnson, Concord; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Shelba Jean Buehrer, Coldwater and brother, Floyd Lampman of Quincy. She was preceded in death by a son, Rick Johnson; sister, Ora Gallop and brothers, Pete and John Lampman. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vandercook Lake Baptist Church, 703 E. McDevitt, Jackson, with the Rev. Kyle Vegeter and the Rev. Donald J. Johnson officiating. Family will received friends for visitation at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, and again at the church at 10 a.m. until time of service Wednesday. Patricia L. St. Amour, age 68, of Cheboygan, passed away Friday, June 25, 2010. She was born April 14, 1942 in Pontiac to Clarence and Margaret (Morrow) Hudak. In 1962, Patricia married William K. St. Amour, who preceded her in death in 2000. Patricia was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Huron Street Tabernacle. She was an avid baker, having won first place in an apple pie baking contest and had baked all of her children’s wedding cakes. She enjoyed taking walks and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her six children, Jomarie (Ron Blaskowski) St. Amour, Kurt St. Amour, William (Penny) St. Amour, Therese (Kenneth) Warner, all of Cheboygan, Andrew (Holly) St. Amour of Wolverine and Alys-Marie Wilkinson of Cheboygan; one sister, Anna-Marie (David) McCormick of Cheboygan; two brothers, Russell (Dorothy) Hudak of Cheboygan and Joe (Ruth) Hudak of Detour; 25 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, William, Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Theresa Brasseur; and one brother, Eddie Hudak. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will take place on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Beaugrand Township Hall with Pastor Sam Agee officiating. Priscilla was born in St. Clair Shores and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1944. She married George Jeynes Freeman, her high school sweetheart, in 1946 and they were happily married for 53 years. Priscilla was predeceased by George in 2001. She worked as a seamstress at Shadow Interiors in Shipshewana, Ind., and had lived most of her life in LaGrange County. She spent many years on Big Long Lake. She was born Oct. 29, 1922, in DeKalb County, Ind., to William and Dessie (Whitman) Diehm. On Feb. 11, 1939, she married Walter E. McCann in Waterloo, Ind. He preceded her in death Feb. 14, 1991. Ruby Schuler-Wendell, 83, formerly of Clinton, now of Higgins Lake, Mich., passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at 4:45 p.m., at Mercy Hospital, Grayling. She was born on Jan. 26, 1927, in Clinton, Mich., to Sam and Ida (Asman) Anglemyre. On July 20, 1946, she married Arthur “Jake” Schuler at the Clinton Congregational Church. Sadly, he preceded her in death on June 18, 1977. She earned a Master’s Degree in Education and was a teacher with the Cheboygan Area Schools. She married Lawrence “Hap” Wendell in 1989 in Cheboygan and he survives. Other survivors are her children, Lynn (Bonnie) Schuler of Clinton, Terry Schuler of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Dale (Kerry) Schuler of Mesa, Ariz.; stepchildren, Patricia Wendell of Gladwin, Gregory Wendell of Fowlerville, David (Debbie) Wendell of Fenton and Lawrence (Marianne) Wendell of Dover, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. He was born March 2, 1969, in Sturgis, a son of Douglas James and Linda Sue (Persing) Carpenter. He had been a Sturgis resident all his life. On Sept. 19, 2007, he married Rmentie Inez (Mendy) Keifer in Centreville. He was self-employed in construction, Hannapel Home Center in Sturgis, RV manufacturing at Coachman, and Morgan-Olsen of Sturgis for eight years. He enjoyed yard work and was known to be able to fix anything. Surviving are his very loving wife, Rmentie Inez Carpenter of Sturgis; two daughters, Kaila Riquelle Wright and Kirstan Kay Sawyer, both of White Pigeon; a son, Noah Ronald-Lee Rowe of Sturgis; a grandson, Seth Benjamine Wright; mother, Linda S. Carpenter, and father, Douglas J. Carpenter of Sturgis; a brother, Chad (Paula) Carpenter of Sturgis; two sisters, Danielle (David) Carpenter-Garl, Amanda (Daniel Keifer) Carpenter of Sturgis; loving mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dan and Jamie Hershberger of Sturgis; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousin and many friends. Susan ‘Sue” Marie Gowen Hendricks, age 58, of Cobb County, Ga., passed away Wednesday, April 21, 2010. She was born in Flint and had resided in Cobb County for the past 28 years. Sue had been employed at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital for 28 years. During that time she attended college and earned her degree in nursing. She had been a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church for 28 years. Sue loved to read, visit and spoil her grandchildren and attend church and plays. Sue was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother. She was selfless and always ready to help a friend in need. She enjoyed writing and making cards for friends and family. Sue will be dearly missed. Psalm 37:5 “Depend on the Lord, trust him, and he will take care of you.” She is survived by one daughter, Lisa (Gordon) Mosley of Acworth, Ga.; one son, Tim (Amanda) Hendricks of Richmond Hill, Ga.; mother, Geraldine Zarza of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Larry Gowen; grandsons, Cole Hendricks and Jack Hendricks; nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Sadie.   William Harrison Swallow, 77, of Quincy, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at home. He was born Feb. 14, 1933 in Piqua, Ohio, to James and Carrie (Fisher) Swallow. His family moved to Michigan in 1937 because of the lack of work in Ohio following the depression. William attended five country schools and graduated in 1951 from Quincy High School, where he lettered in four varsity sports and was captain of his basketball team during his senior year. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, earning two battle stars while serving with the 1st Marine Division in Korea. He is a life member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps League. He served as Quincy Legion Post Commander four times and was Post Service Officer for many years. Mr. Swallow also served as the Branch County Legion Commander and was a Master Mason and Shriner. He was self employed in the refrigeration and air conditioning business for many years, later becoming a refrigeration foreman for the State of Michigan and maintenance supervisor in prison camps. He married Nancy Crapo and they had seven children: Lucinda (Ray) Conley of Quincy, Susan (Brent) Clock of Coldwater, Diane Swallow of Quincy, Eileen (Derek) Schroeder of Dunedin, Fla., William (Barbara) Swallow of Quincy, Amy (Glenn) Snapp of Quincy and Kathy (who died as an infant). He had 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard, in 1996. He married Audrey (Stockwell) Emmons in 1991. They are active members at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. They enjoyed raising orphaned baby birds, small animals and working in their yard. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at the George White Funeral Home in Quincy, with Father Paul Brisbane officiating. Interment will follow in Fisher Hill Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials to the Quincy American Legion would be appreciated. |

William J. Kanaby, 75, of Quincy, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at The Laurels of Coldwater. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 19, 2010 at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church with Rev. Fr. Daniel Doctor officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 18, 2010 from 2-8 p.m. with the Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. William was born June 3, 1935 in Detroit to Edward and Marcia (Monger) Kanaby. He married Mary Wede on Oct. 31, 1958 in Croswell. Mr. Kanaby served in the US Army before working at the Coldwater Regional Center for 30 years until his retirement in 1988. He was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, where he served as an usher and Eucharistic minister. Bill enjoyed gardening, flowers and woodworking. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and fishing, and was proud of his “wildlife management“ skills. Bill is survived by his wife Mary, his son Michael Kanaby of Washington DC, his daughters Tina (Allen) Johnson of Hartford City, Ind., Theresa (James) Dunham of Berryville, Ark. and Jackie (Jim) Waggoner of West Unity, Ohio, his brothers Herb Kanaby and Tom Kanaby, both of Croswell, his sisters Nadine Snelgrove of Mexico Beach, Fla. and Mary Jane Kasprus of Croswell, special family friend Betty Siler of Coldwater, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Memorial may be directed to St. Charles Borromeo Church. |

William Miller, 78, of Lyons, Ohio, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at The Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He was born on March 8, 1932, in Morenci, Mich., the son of Joseph and Edna (Divert) Miller. On Sept. 7, 1952, in Lyons, Ohio, he married Reva Seigneur and she survives. Bill lived most of his life in the Lyons area. He was a graduate of  Morenci High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was formerly employed at Stubnitz-Greene in Adrian, Mich., from where he retired in 1987. Bill was a member of the East Chesterfield Christian Church, the Lyons V.F.W., Lyons Historical Society (past president) and a former member of the Lyons Odd Fellows Lodge.   Besides his wife, Reva, Bill is survived by a daughter, Cheryl (Francis) Ladd of Sand Creek, Mich.; two sons, Kenneth (Sheril) Miller of Brunswick, Ohio, and Mark (Patricia) Miller of Archbold, Ohio; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Everingham of Adrian, Mich.; and one brother, John Miller of Adrian. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Poling and Phyllis Nelson; and two brothers, Jim and Richard Miller. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 2010, at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Pastor Mark Harris officiating. Burial will follow at the Lyons Cemetery in Lyons, Ohio. There will be a visitation on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the East Chesterfield Christian Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice. |
