Anthony Byks Anthony Byks, age 66, of Mount Clemens, passed away Monday at St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Detroit. He was born September 4, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. Mr. Byks was employed as a carpenter at Macomb Fire Door, Roseville, retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters Local #687. Survived by wife, Arleta; children, Dwayne (Diana) Byks, Dawn (Keith) Hoffman and Christopher (Lynn) Byks; grandchildren, Andrew, Sara, Hannah, Jacob and Alexis, and siblings, Angela (Daryl) Gottschalk and James (Deborah) Byks. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Danuta. Visiting hours at Will and Schwarzkoff Funeral Home, 233 NB Gratiot, Mt. Clemens from 2-9 p.m., Thursday with an 8:15 p.m. prayer service. Funeral 11 a.m., Friday in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Carl E. Caseman, age 69, of rural Burr Oak, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at his home. Carl was born Sept. 14, 1940, in Constantine, a son to the late Lloyd C. and Marian (Dimmick) Caseman. Carl graduated from Constantine High School with the class of 1958 and later served in the U.S. National Guard. On June 4, 1966, he married Patricia Lee Jensen which ended in divorce. He later married Carolyn Price which also ended in divorce. On Aug. 24, 1982, he married Ruth German in Centreville. Carl had lived most of his life in Constantine moving to his home on Long Lake in 1986. He had owned and operated Caseman Marathon Gas station in Constantine for four years.  He had been employed as a brick layer at BAC. Local 9 of Kalamazoo and also had been employed by Bracy and Jarhr of Quincy.  Carl was owner, president and C.E.O. of Caseman Motor Car Co. of Burr Oak. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Caseman of Burr Oak; daughter, Melissa Sandker of Sturgis; two step-sons, Ronald German Jr. of Key West, Fla., and Brian German of Burr Oak; three grandchildren, Justin and August Adams of Colorado and Clarissa Sandker of Sturgis; step grandson, Trent German of LaGrange, Ind.; brother, Danny (Dana) Caseman of Altha, Fla.; three sisters, Nancy (Jerry) Preston, Bonnie Caseman and Sandra (Dennis) Blodgett, all of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sons, Charles and Jeffrey Caseman; and one brother, Howard Caseman. A private memorial service for the family will be held at 2 p.m. July 16, 2010, at the Constantine Cemetery.

Charles W. Pierson, 67, of Ruskin, Fla., and a former resident of Sturgis and graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1960, passed away Friday July 9, 2010, at his home. He was born Sept. 22, 1942, a son of Charles Ward and Rama (Shafer) Pierson. Chuck was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. He was a life member of the Marine Corps League, Vietnam Veterans Association of America and the VFW. He was also a pedigreed Devil Dog, an avid hunter, member of the Safari Club International and an avid proponent of the Boy Scouts of America. On Oct. 28, 1967, he married Arlene Wisler. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two sons, Charles “Alex” Pierson of Indianapolis and Justin R. Pierson of Knoxville, Tenn.; one daughter, Tiffany F. (Andrew) Cline, stationed in Japan; four grandsons, Keegan R., Charles A. (Xander), Liam K. Pierson and Tyler K. Cline; his mother; and a brother, Eric F. Pierson. Delbert M. “Del” Petermann, of West Bend, Wis., died peacefully July 5, 2010, at the age of 87. He was born Aug. 10, 1922, in the town of Auburn, Wis., to the late Henry and Esther (nee Schaefer) Petermann. He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Arleigh (nee Ehnert) and his brother, Lloyd. He is survived by four loving daughters: Karen (Kari) Eckhardt (Edward) of Grafton; Kathleen (John) Limbach of West Bend; Judith (Tom) Frank of State College, Pa.; and Jeaneen (Brian) Hall of Sturgis.    “Grandpa Pete’s” eight grandchildren: Ed, Christine, John (Tammy), Adam (Jenny), Drew (Phoenicia), Nicole (Tom), Aaron and Gretchen (fiancé Jason) were one of the great joys of his life. He is also survived by a great-grandchild, April; a sister-in-law, LaVerne Petermann of Auburn,; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Delbert was widely known and well-respected in the West Bend area. He worked for over 45 years at the West Bend Company, missing only three days of work during that span. The other great joy in Delbert’s life was serving his Lord at Pilgrim and St. Andrew Lutheran churches, whether he was pulling weeds in the flowerbeds or counting the Sunday contributions. He was a church council officer, elder, Sunday School teacher, youth director, usher and tireless committee member.   Del was considered a “cornerstone” of the Kettle Moraine Dartball League in which he played for 68 years. Del was elected to the Wisconsin Dartball Hall of Fame in 2010. International Lutheran Laymen’s League, AAL, Camp Luwisomo, Living Word Lutheran High School, and Bethesda Lutheran Home will miss Delbert’s lifelong generosity, support and participation.  “Well done, good and faithful servant!” Funeral services for Delbert will be held at 11 a.m.  Saturday at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Farmington, Wis.  The Rev. Robert Korytkowski will officiate and lunch will follow the church service.  Interment will take place following lunch at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Fane. Donald E. Smoker, 60, of Howe, Ind., died unexpectedly Friday, July 9, 2010, at his home. He was a 1967 Sturgis High School graduate who excelled in Athletics. He was a Navy veteran who served his country during the Vietnam War. Donald retired from Ross Labs in Sturgis, where he worked in the shipping and receiving department. He was a past deacon of the Lima Presbyterian Church in Howe, supported the Disabled American Veterans and was an avid Notre Dame fan. He was born July 27, 1949, in Battle Creek, a son of Donald F. and Patricia A. (Stewart) Smoker. On May 24, 1969, he married Julie Thomae at the Lima Presbyterian Church in Howe. She survives in Howe. Also surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Chris Smoker of Howe and Matt and Alexis Smoker of Sturgis; a granddaughter (who was the love of his life) Rachel Olivia Smoker; and a brother and sister-in-law, Rick and Kelly Smoker of Lima, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Terry Smoker. According to his wishes, cremation will take place. Kenneth and Alice and Lowder, grandsons Nick and David Hoag and stepson David Hoag, special friend Kyle Fry and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Dorothy retired from Ft. Dearborn Printing, formerly Eagle Printing Company, Coldwater and was the first female supervisor to be employed in their plant. She previously was employed by Crotty Corp., Quincy as a supervisor for many years. Dorothy was known to have a quick smile, great laugh, kind word, sympathetic ear, great sense of humor and wit and love of fun and life, always “ready to get this party started.” She was an avid card player known to be almost unbeatable at pinocle or cribbage or hearts and will be missed greatly by her fellow bunco club members that include her sister Alice, with whom she has met with for over 20 years. Dorothy was devoted to her family and mostly will be missed by her family and friends for her eternal spirit, faithful friendship and unconditional love and support. Cremation has taken place and she will be interred at Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date. The family requests that you please join them for a memorial luncheon in honor and celebration of Dorothy’s life on Friday, July 16, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the American Legion Post #52, 84 W. He was born October 7, 1934, in Evart, Mich., to James O. and Florence (Comstock) Borden. Duane graduated from Evart High School in 1952. Duane was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He married Maria Elena Quintana in Los Cruces, New Mexico on April 9, 1956. He worked as a plant manager for General Safety and retired to the Marion area from Clinton Township in 1991. He enjoyed woodworking, golf and hunting. He is survived by his four sons, Pat (Diane) Borden of Chesterfield Township, Paul (Gaye) Borden of Chesterfield Township, Duane Borden of Clinton Township and Tracy (Nancy) Borden of New Baltimore; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Kay (Sterling) McLachlan of Evart; brother, James Borden of Evart. Wiley Rd.   She was born in Ann Arbor on December 4, 1921, to Ben and Esther Eddy. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Louis F. Plummer Jr.; son, Louis F. Plummer III; her parents, Benjamin H. and Esther P. Eddy; and sister, Susan S. Eddy. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth M. and Richard E. Wolf; son, Andrew P. Plummer; granddaughters, Rikanda Weston, Robyn Henry, Nicte-ha Price; sisters, Barbara Crandell, Joan Brigham, Joyce Plummer, Patricia Woods; as well as nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren great-nieces/nephews. Her extended family valued integrity, the natural world, the use of words, intellectual pursuits, musical expression, open hearted hospitality and loyalty to family, with frequent clan gatherings. These values formed and guided her life. She attended Camp Interlochen under the tutelage of art counselor, Gwen Frostic. After high school she attended Albion College, before serving in World War II as a Navy WAVE, Pharmacist Mate. She met Lou from Ganges December of 1946 and married July 14, 1947. They raised three children in Flint and summered in Douglas/Ganges. In 1990, they settled in Douglas. In July of 2009, they joyfully celebrated their 63rd anniversary.  Dad was very proud of this accomplishment. Betsy had a passion for the arts. She sang with the Flint Community Chorus. Jitterbug and swing always got her feet tapping. Poetry and story telling were avocations for her. After her kids were grown,  she enrolled at the University of Michigan-Flint branch to refine her innate literary skills. She attended classes at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago-Oxbow Campus in Saugatuck, exploring writing and expressive movement. Elizabeth demonstrated her love of others and care for her community by: efforts to protect land from development and preserve for park/recreation use, initiate a neighborhood watch to assist children with problems, going to and from school,  led women’s Bible studies; and volunteered in weekly visits to nursing home patients. Following the reception at the church at 4:15 p.m. is Graveside Service; Plummerville Cemetery, Lakeshore Dr., Ganges  (south of 121st St.). At 6 p.m. is Buffet & Sharing at Beech Hurst Farmhouse, 121 Ferry St. (south of Center St.), Douglas.

James A. Fairchild, 89, of Three Rivers, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, at Three Rivers Health. He was born April 6, 1921, on the family farm in Florence Township, a son of Ernest and Florence M. (Kelley) Fairchild. On May 20, 1948, he married Thelma Weber at the Centreville Presbyterian Church. Jim worked and operated the family farm until he retired in 1985. He also worked as a Three Rivers Hospital attendant. Jim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Three Rivers/Centreville, where he worked at one time or another on each board. He served on the Lockport Township Board  for 22 yrs, 13 as its treasurer; the Lockport-Fabius Park Fire Board  for 17 years; and the Agricultural Stabilization Committee for more than 20 years. Jim was a St. Joseph Farm Bureau lifetime member, and Junior Farm Bureau and St. Joseph County 4-H leader. Jim also served on the Gov. G. Mennon Williams Agricultural Advisory Board. Surviving Jim are his wife, Thelma Fairchild; daughters Carla Jean (Will) McDonald of Bennettsville,  S.C., and Louann (Lee) Bitely of Bitely; son Charles Fairchild of Sturgis; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister Lola Musser of Portage.   He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister Kathleen Fairchild. Jo Ann loved life and will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Joe Frank Green, 77 “Joe, Daddy, Papa, Grandpa, Your Father, Old Man, The Educator, Green” of Onaway, Mich., died on June 28, 2010 at the age of 77. Joe was born on July 11, 1932, in Paducah, Kentucky, and later moved to Michigan with his family. He proudly served in the United States Army, 100th Tank Battalion, 1st Armored Division of Fort Hood, Texas and was a proud member of the Teamster’s who retired from Signal Delivery after 30+ years. He was an avid hunter, Civil War & history aficionado, who loved to travel and visit local casinos. In addition, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Joe is survived by his six loving children, Joel C. Green, Joelynn “Jodie” C. Necker (Dave), Janice C. Foster, Judith C. Budzinski (Wayne), Joann C. Weingartz (Daniel) and Jeanette C. Hilliker (Gary); sixteen grandchildren, Ron (Christy), Joe & Serena Green, David & Erica (Doug) Necker, Russell, Daniel & Mitchell Foster, Alexis (John), Adam & Addie Budzinski, Isabella & Jackson Weingartz, Jessica, Holly & Jacob Hilliker; three great-grandchildren, Gavin & Jackson Green and Conner Foster; and two sisters, Geneva Longeway and Mary Lou Zentz. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Joseph C. Green; his parents, Joseph Clyde & Ola Mae Green; and siblings, Vada Knowlton, Betty Green, Bobbie Green and Richard Green. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held in his honor, Saturday, July 10 at 1 p.m. at the Allis Township Hall, 20018 West 638 Hwy., Onaway, Mich. Visitation will be held Wednesday, prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. Joel was born April 3, 1949 in Happy, Kent. to Thomas and Matria (Millard) Rollins. Mr. Rollins worked for the Bronson Post Office delivering mail for many years. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1967 and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Joel was a member of the Quincy American Legion and the Knight of Pythius. He was known by many as “Dr. Death” or “Big Daddy” and was a stranger to no one. Joel was a phenomenal artist in many different mediums, especially drawing and enjoyed playing softball, golf and going fishing. He was an avid Detroit fan and enjoyed music, but most of all he enjoyed his two grandchildren. Joel is survived by his son Chris Rollins, his grandchildren Peyton and Jacob Rollins, all of Coldwater, his former wife Judy (Milliman) Bradley, his half brother Luke Rollins and many cousins. John graduated from Aquinas College and started teaching high school English and Latin in the Fraser Public Schools in 1951 with grades K-12 in one building. He spent over 35 years in the Fraser Public Schools. When he retired, he was principal of Howard C. Richards Junior High. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma Brockschmidt; children, Mary A. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Delores “Jean”Wade; and two brothers, Daniel Ferrier and Donald Ferrier. Larry worked as a general laborer for an iron and metal salvage yard. Lillian M. Swihart, 78, of Sturgis, passed away Sunday morning, July 11, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Aug. 18, 1931, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Clarence and Lucile (Berry) Walters. Lillian was a lifelong Sturgis-area resident and a graduate of Brighton High School in Brighton, Ind., with the class of 1950. On Oct. 5, 1952, she married Melvin K. Stukey. This marriage ended in divorce, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2008. On Nov. 8, 1975, she was united in marriage with Stewart D. Swihart Sr. in Sturgis. He died Aug. 29, 2009. She had been employed by the First National Bank in Sturgis from 1971 until her retirement in 1990. Prior to that she had been employed by J.C. Penney in Sturgis from 1948-1965. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sturgis where she taught Sunday school from 1953-1963 and served as president of Lutherettes in 1963 and had also served as president of the Ladies Mission Circle. Lillian was always very active in the Sturgis community. Some of her involvements included holding the office of president with the Sturgis Band and Orchestra Parents Association in 1970, the Modern Mother’s Club, Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary 1994-1996, Sturgis Women’s Club, 1996-1998 and the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild. She served as treasurer of the Sturgis Hospital Medical Scholarship Guild and the Sturgis Women’s Club. She was a charter member of the Sturgis Hospital Popcorn Guild. Lillian was named Sturgis Citizen of the Year in 1998 and received the Sturgis Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds in 1995. Lillian was instrumental in the establishment of the Tree of Love at the Sturgis Hospital. She is survived by a daughter, Christine (Duane) Gonser of Sturgis; a son, Jon (Cara Davis) Stukey of Sturgis; four grandchildren, April (Galen) Geigley, Andrew Mathews, Steven Mathews and Tori Stukey; three great-grandchildren, Carina Geigley, Cierra Geigley and Jonathan Mathews; a sister, Donna (Frank) Krontz of Sturgis; a brother, Clarence (Elaine) Walters of Quincy; a stepson, Stew (Donna) Swihart II of Howe, Ind.; three step-grandchildren, Scott Swihart, Steven (Lisa) Swihart and Cathy (Kurt) Stevens; longtime close and caring friend, Joyce Shinn of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Lillian M. Swihart will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Lois Jordan Lansing Lois Jordan, age 95 of Lansing, formerly of Clinton, died Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the Grandhaven Living Center, Lansing with her loving family at her bedside. She was born in Livingston, TN on July 19, 1914, the daughter of Sidney and Sallie (Clark) Harward. She was united in marriage with Truman Jordan on January 5, 1936 in Livingston and he preceded her in death on December 5, 1996. Lois moved to Lansing from Clinton in 1992. She attended the Lansing Trinity Methodist Church and was a member of the Lansing Area Patchers, and a former member of Adrian Quilt Guild. Lois lived on a farm near Macon, MI for many years where she raised chickens and sold their eggs. Lois is survived by a daughter, Lenora (Gene) Rathbun of Lansing; a son, Truman H. (Linda) Jordan of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; six grandchildren, Cindy (Dirk) Case, Paul (Brenda) Rathbun, Jim (Rachel) Rathbun, Jenny (Eric Wood) Jordan, Jackie (Andy) Morrical, and Joy (Mark Johnson) Jordan; twelve great-grandchildren, Joshua (Natalie) Case, Amanda Case, Ben, Sam, Allyssa, James, Shalyn, and Jeremiah Rathbun, Sam and Emma Jordan-Wood, and Matt and Mandie Morrical. In addition to her husband, Truman, Lois was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and two sisters. Margaret (Marge) Frances Thiele, age 90, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at Sturgis Hospital. She was born July 14, 1919, in Chicago, a daughter of the late Anthony L. and Margaret (Miller) Schuster. Marge started her career in Chicago, working as a secretary in an advertising agency. There, she met Frederic W. Thiele Sr. They were married in 1941. During the early 1940s she was stationed with her husband on U.S. Army assignments in St. Louis, Seattle, Yokohama, Japan, and Fort Sheridan, Ill.  In 1942, they made Brookside Farm, Colon, their permanent home. In 1984, Marge moved to Sturgis. While living in Colon, she was an active member of the Colon Garden Club, the Colon library board, local school PTA’s, and was a founding member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church. Marge enjoyed gatherings, gardening, oil painting, traveling and volunteer work for her church, the St. Joseph County Council on Aging and the Pregnancy Crisis Line. While a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church for the past 25 years, she had been very active in the altar society, Holy Angels Seniors and prayer circles. She enjoyed 20 years of traveling that took her all over the world: Israel, Russia, Egypt, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Ireland and all throughout the British Isles.  Her painting also brought her much joy. She not only painted, but also attended many art classes, and exhibited her art in shows at the Sturges Young Auditorium. She was married to Frederic William Thiele Sr. for 34 years. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1975. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Frederic William Thiele Jr.; father and mother-in-law, Victor and Ida Thiele; and three sisters, Dolores (LeRoy) Scheffner, Lucille Schuster and Rosemary Schuster. Cummings in Chicago where the couple made their home and raised their family. Marion was employsed as a Home Health Aid for many years. In November 1994, Marion and Richard moved to Topinabee where they have been since. Marion loved to cook. She enjoyed music being surrounded by her family. She attended the Berean Bible Church and CURVES. She is survived by her husband, Richard; children, Barbara (Ray) Hoff of Topinabee, James (Lori) Cummings of Topinabee, Kathleen Clancy of Tompinabee; seven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; brother, John DeJong of Topinabee; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Marion was preceded in death by her grandson Richard Hoff, and her sisters Dorothy Ray and Annabelle Berndt.   Mase, a 1960 graduate of Onaway High School, worked for the Michigan State Department of Highway and for Cheboygan Memorial Hospital in the maintenance department. His passion and talent for fishing took him to Grand Marais in the summers and his winters were spent in Tower carving and painting decoys, which are admired by many. His kind heart and generosity will be missed by all. Mase is survived by his four children, Beth (Brian) Flynn, Edward (Barb) Mason, Lynda (Al) Hererra and Patrick (Sharla) Mason. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Sam, Nick, Shelby, Faith, Katie and Scarlett. He will be sadly missed by his dear companion, Tess Burfield, and his close friend and cousin, Lawrence Veihl. Mary was born Jan.17, 1933, in Sturgis, to Laddie and Christine (Hudson) Kolassa. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to a very loving family. Mrs. Smoker provided years of dedicated service to the Branch County Courts, Federal Mogul and Community Health Center of Branch County. She was a lifelong and faith-filled member of St. Mary of Assumption Church, where she was a member of the Rosary Society. Mary was a devout Catholic, very devoted to the blessed Virgin. On Sept. 22, 1951, she married Marvin J. “Red” Smoker in Bronson. They shared 59 loving years together. In addition to her husband, Marvin, Mary is survived by her seven children, Marcia (Tom) Youngquist of West Bloomfield, Timothy (Brandi) Smoker of Concord, Carlene (Alan) Sosinski of Bronson, Randy (Vickie) Smoker of Bronson, Vince (Janine) Smoker of Milford, Jill (Tom) Duke of Coldwater and Julie (Chris) Staab of Marshall; her sister, Janet Yesh of Bronson; her brother, Leonard Kolassa of Garden City; 23 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She will be missed by loving friends and her church family. She was a longstanding member of Canandaigua Community Church. She started the Youth Group at the church and served as director for a number of years. She enjoyed spending time talking to everyone she knew. Frank E. Baker, 75, of Brooklyn, Mich., passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Allegiance Health in Jackson. He was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Detroit to Frank James and Ruth Catherine (Mowery) Baker. Frank was an avid hunter and fisherman and he truly loved the outdoors. He also spent time refinishing antiques.  For the last 20 years, Frank was a landscaper at a private estate in Utica, Mich., on which he developed and maintained a small exclusive golf course. Surviving are two siblings, Elsie Westlake of Brooklyn and James (Rena) Baker of Hillsdale, along with nine nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Vivian Brigle and Helen Moore, and a niece. She is survived by one daughter, Angela (Wayne) Rose of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Mikey (Nicole) Rose of Jackson, Matthew Rose of Jonesville and Megan Rose of Jonesville; four great-grandchildren, Ariana, Kennedy and Trevor Kilpatrick and Michael Horton Ill.; four sisters, Geraldine (Mike) Kelsch of Farmington Hills, Bernadette Paes of Arizona, Stephanie (Bill) Mullen of New Boston and Roxanne (Chris) Stadtfeld of Erie and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Edward Hayes. Mrs. Porter was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Jonesville and she retired from Klein Tools after over 30 years of service. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Henrietta Ann Porter will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Ioane Sigarara officiating. Interment will take place in the Mosherville Cemetery. Howard D. Hawkins, age 59 of Addison, died on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 in Three Rivers, as a result of an automobile accident. He was born on Feb. 19, 1951 in Addison to Robert C. and Marilyn L. (Ebbert) Hawkins.  He married Kay Young on May 6, 1978 in Hillsdale and she survives. Howard lived in the Addison area all his life.  He graduated from Addison High School in 1969.  He was formerly employed at Merillat Industries in Adrian for over 20 years, and he was also a carpenter and involved in the family farm.  He loved nature and he loved planting trees. Surviving are three sons, Craig (Carri) Hawkins of Coldwater, Douglas Hawkins and Thomas Hawkins, both of Addison; two brothers, Bruce (Patricia) Hawkins of Addison, Richard (Patricia J.) Hawkins of Osseo; one sister, Julia Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga.; several nephews and nieces. Keith Edward Roberts, 75, of Jonesville, passed away Friday, July 9, 2010, surrounded by family and friends at Drews Place Village Green in Hillsdale. He was born July 22, 1934, in Angola, Ind., to Edward and Harriett Roberts, who preceded him in death along with one sister, Ruth Batterson of Coldwater. He was married Nov. 26, 1960, to Jane C. Crider of Chicago and she preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 2009, after nearly 49 years of marriage. Surviving are two daughters, Renae (Tom) Stritzinger of Grand Rapids and Amy (Chris) Fast of Hillsdale; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Abigail, and Madeline Stritzinger and Bennett and Ridley Fast. Also surviving is one sister, Pearl “Puckie” Luck of Ionia. Keith grew up in Dearborn Heights and Coldwater, where he graduated from St. Charles Catholic High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tri-State University in 1960 after serving two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as an agent for AAA Insurance in Hillsdale until 1978 when he purchased the Thompson-Roberts Agency in Jonesville. He owned and operated the agency until his retirement in 2001. An avid golfer, boater, and gardener, Keith was also an active member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale for almost 50 years. He enjoyed annual weekends at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Bloomfield Hills. Along with his wife, he volunteered his time to historical building restoration projects and other community services. He also served as president of the Hillsdale Lions Club. A mass of Christian burial for Keith Edward Roberts will take place at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 9 with Fr. Thomas Butler officiating. Interment will follow at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. A memorial visitation honoring both Keith and Jane Roberts will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8 at VanHorn Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Martha Ann Bonfiglio-Johnstone, 72, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010. Martha was a 1956 graduate of Hillsdale High School and a 1960 graduate of Siena Heights University. She taught 30 years for the Lansing Diocese, 25 of those at Our Lady of Fatima, Michigan Center (1977-2002). Other schools were St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Pius X and St. Michael’s of Flint. She was also a CCD teacher at St. Mary’s of Jackson and Our Lady of Fatima (1990-1994). Martha was honored three times in “Who’s Who of American Teachers”. She was a former member of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, Jackson Musical Theatre, Clark Lake Players, Queen’s Choir and Our Lady of Fatima Choir. Martha is survived by her four children and 11 grandchildren: Christopher (Chip and Karen) Johnstone (Kyle, Casey and Caleb), Mary Johnstone (Solomon and Alexandria Blair), Nancy Bellers (Edward, Rafe, Cindy and Riley), and David (Melisa) Johnstone (Anthony and Brea Marie). One sister survives, Nancy Bonfiglio Dogan of Wayne, Pa., two nephews and a niece. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie; two brothers, Natale Jr. and Anthony and her parents, Natale and Ruth Bonfiglio, all of Hillsdale. The Mass of The Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 711 N. Francis St., Jackson, with the Reverend James Shaver officiating. The family will greet friends noon-1 p.m. at the church. Private interment will take place at St. Anthony Cemetery in Hillsdale. Okla Warren Johnson Haslett Okla Warren Johnson, age 69, of Haslett, died on July 8, 2010. Okla was born in Pueblo, Colorado, to Okla Wayne Johnson and Charlotte Louise Johnson (Mulkey), in 1941. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by four children, Travis (Lisa) Johnson, Marlo (Thomas) Heniser, Shawna (Mike) Haid, and Kristen (Stephen) Leeman; nine grandchildren, A.J., Kate, Chayse, Cody, Taylor, Cayden, Maddie, Keagen and Gabriella; and his ex-wife, Jan (LeVeque) Davenport (John). Kendra Weaver, whom he called his "adopted" daughter, was also there by his side and was a wonderful friend to all of us through this difficult time. He received his Masters' degree in Physical Education from Michigan State University. He was a physical education teacher and a wrestling coach in Saginaw, Grand Ledge, DeWitt and Okemos, Michigan, as well as several high schools in Colorado. He was the first four time state champion in the nation in wrestling. He wrestled for Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia. He was a Big Ten Wrestling Champion in 1961 at Michigan State University and was also an alternate in the 1964 Olympics. His family would like to thank the staff at Dimondale Nursing Home and Ingham Regional Medical Center for their expert and kind care of their father, especially Terry, who spent a lot of hours talking about wrestling with him. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 16, 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in East Lansing, with lunch/visitation following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made toward his funeral costs. A memorial fund has been set up at Citizens Bank for Okla W. Johnson.

Raymond John Ruhlman Raymond John Ruhlman, age 89, of Lenox Township, died Monday evening, July 12, 2010, at home. He was born July 21, 1920, in North Branch, the son of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Grobbel) Ruhlman. His marriage of 62 years to Rosemary Beste was January 5, 1946, at St. Clement Catholic Church, Center Line. Rosemary passed away March 18, 2008. Raymond served his country with the United States Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of the 836th Engineer Aviation Battalion, Company C, whose motto was "Anything, Anytime, Anywhere." The unit built airstrips for fighter planes on islands as the U.S. worked to defeat Japan. He was a parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Richmond and member of the Knights of Columbus. Raymond and Rosemary lived in Warren until 1951 when they bought a dairy farm in New Haven. They also did truck farming and sold vegetables at Eastern Market. For several years they processed, bagged and sold the milk right on the farm. He was employed by Dodge Truck from 1946-1956, New Haven Foundry from 1956-1986 and was a member of the U.A.W. Surviving are nine daughters, Therese Stier of Lenox, Marie (Michael) Walsh of Armada, Jean Hagen of Lenox, Irene (Thomas) Langmesser of Smiths Creek, Barbara (Douglas) Grabowski of Lenox, Mary (Wayne) Schultz of Melvin, Susan Given of Emmett, JoAnn (Robert) Vanderbossche of Emmett and Christine Ruhlman of New Haven; son-in-law, Richard Venuk, Richmond; 27 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Andrzejewski and Cecilia Theisen; brothers, Edwin, Leo and David Ruhlman. He was preceded in death by daughter, Roseanne Venuk; infant sons, Joseph and John Ruhlman; sister, Mary Lou Knocke; son-in-law, Gordon Hagen and great-grandson, Nathaniel Venuk. Rev. Staley M. Sorrell Rev. Staley M. Sorrell, age 78, a resident of Warren, died July 11, 2010, at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. He was born August 19, 1931, in Danville, Virginia. Became pastor of Van Dyke Baptist Church in Warren in 1953 and continued serving until his health failed. Graduate of Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. with a doctorate degree in Divinity. He led literally thousands of people to the Lord through his ministry and had read the Bible completely 175 times over his lifetime. His whole life was devoted to his family, church and ministry. He enjoyed his autos and traveling and played Jamaican cowbells, piano and organ; often times accompanying his services. Pastor Sorrell was a member of Gospel Fellowship Association; International Baptist Missions and was awarded in the Fundamentalist Hall of Fame, Lucerne Conference Center, California. Survivors are his wife Audrey, married June 17, 1950, and just celebrated their 60th anniversary; children Dennis (Janelle), Byron (Sharon) and David Sorrell; grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew, Jocelyn, Sarah (Rev. James) Gent and Jason; great-grandson, Parker James Gent. He is also survived by his step-mother Edith Sorrell. Visitation will be Thursday 2-9 p.m. and Friday 10-11 a.m. at Ford Funeral Home, 26560 Van Dyke, Center Line. Funeral service will be Friday, July 16 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. He enjoyed yard work and was known to be able to fix anything. Surviving are his very loving wife, Rmentie Inez Carpenter of Sturgis; two daughters, Kaila Riquelle Wright and Kirstan Kay Sawyer, both of White Pigeon; a son, Noah Ronald-Lee Rowe of Sturgis; a grandson, Seth Benjamine Wright; mother, Linda S. Carpenter, and father, Douglas J. Carpenter of Sturgis; a brother, Chad (Paula)Carpenter of Sturgis; two sisters, Danielle (David)Carpenter-Garl, Amanda (DanielKeifer)Carpenter of Sturgis; loving mother-in-law and father-in-law, Dan and Jamie Hershberger of Sturgis; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousin and many friends. She had been a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church for 28 years. Sue loved to read, visit and spoil her grandchildren and attend church and plays. Sue was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother. She was selfless and always ready to help a friend in need. She enjoyed writing and making cards for friends and family. Sue will be dearly missed. Psalm 37:5 “Depend on the Lord, trust him, and he will take care of you.” She is survived by one daughter, Lisa (Gordon) Mosley of Acworth, Ga.; one son, Tim (Amanda) Hendricks of Richmond Hill, Ga.; mother, Geraldine Zarza of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Larry Gowen; grandsons, Cole Hendricks and Jack Hendricks; nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Sadie. She was preceded in death by her father, Urban Gowen and stepfather, Ray Zarza. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Rev. Nathan Barnell will officiate. Walter was the firm foundation that his large extended family flourished from. He will be missed by all who were touched by his loving spirit. Walter is survived by his wife, Rita; daughter, Judy & Bruce Anderson of Longwood, Florida; three grandchildren, Shelly (Mike) Hensley, Scott Anderson and Steve Anderson; five great-grandchildren, Luke, Madeline, Emma, Braydon and Althea; sister, Merna Gillespie; stepson, Dan Wilcox; two sisters-in-law, Judy Ranville and Aneta Collard; numerous beloved nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews, including Gerald Ranville and Peggy Klein, who lived with Walter for several years during their childhood. William was born June 3, 1935 in Detroit to Edward and Marcia (Monger) Kanaby. He married Mary Wede on Oct. 31, 1958 in Croswell. Mr. Kanaby served in the US Army before working at the Coldwater Regional Center for 30 years until his retirement in 1988. He was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, where he served as an usher and Eucharistic minister. Bill enjoyed gardening, flowers and woodworking. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and fishing, and was proud of his “wildlife management“ skills. Bill is survived by his wife Mary, his son Michael Kanaby of Washington DC, his daughters Tina (Allen) Johnson of Hartford City, Ind., Theresa (James) Dunham of Berryville, Ark. and Jackie (Jim) Waggoner of West Unity, Ohio, his brothers Herb Kanaby and Tom Kanaby, both of Croswell, his sisters Nadine Snelgrove of Mexico Beach, Fla. and Mary Jane Kasprus of Croswell, special family friend Betty Siler of Coldwater, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Memorial may be directed to St. Charles Borromeo Church.

William Miller, 78, of Lyons, Ohio, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at The Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He was born on March 8, 1932, in Morenci, Mich., the son of Joseph and Edna (Divert) Miller. On Sept. 7, 1952, in Lyons, Ohio, he married Reva Seigneur and she survives. Bill lived most of his life in the Lyons area. He was a graduate of  Morenci High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was formerly employed at Stubnitz-Greene in Adrian, Mich., from where he retired in 1987. Bill was a member of the East Chesterfield Christian Church, the Lyons V.F.W., Lyons Historical Society (past president) and a former member of the Lyons Odd Fellows Lodge.   Besides his wife, Reva, Bill is survived by a daughter, Cheryl (Francis) Ladd of Sand Creek, Mich.; two sons, Kenneth (Sheril) Miller of Brunswick, Ohio, and Mark (Patricia) Miller of Archbold, Ohio; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Everingham of Adrian, Mich.; and one brother, John Miller of Adrian. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Poling and Phyllis Nelson; and two brothers, Jim and Richard Miller. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15, 2010, at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Pastor Mark Harris officiating. Burial will follow at the Lyons Cemetery in Lyons, Ohio. There will be a visitation on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the East Chesterfield Christian Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
