Barbara R. Rolfe Battle Creek Barbara Rosetta Rolfe, 80, of Battle Creek, MI, passed away quietly on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at the Marshall Nursing and Rehab in Marshall, MI. She was born February 5, 1930 in Belding, MI the daughter of Charles Anthony and Pansy (Starkey) Anthony. Barb was a mother, homemaker and wife all of her life. She married Maxwell Rolfe in Battle Creek, MI on July 27, 1946; however he preceded her in death in 1995. Barbara is survived by two daughters: Patricia M. Hulse of Battle Creek; Susan J. (Tim) Miller of Auburn, IN; two sons: Michael H. Rolfe of Mesa, AZ; Roy C. (Pat) Rolfe, Sr. of Portage, MI; nine grandchildren: Lavonne Reniger of Battle Creek, MI; Christy (Brad) Simmons of Portage, MI; Roy Rolfe II of Wyoming, MI; Brian Platz of Portage, MI; Kelly (Tony) Smith of Battle Creek, MI; Denyel (Kate) Bond of Ft. Wayne, IN; Jeremy Hulse of Battle Creek; Tony Miller of Lafayette, IN; and Nicole Miller of Auburn, IN; and nine great grandchildren. She came to Battle Creek as a young child. Barbara graduated from high school with a GED in the 1970's. She had been involved in the PTA for 28 years at Brownlee Park, Southeastern Junior High, and Battle Creek Central. She later served as President of the Battle Creek PTA council. She was the former Past President of the, chapter # 565 Auxiliary. When she was younger Barb enjoyed bowling. Among her other interests was a membership in the YMCA's Y-Wives and their annual "Mad Hatter" event. The group of friends would go to area schools showing off their hand crafted and whimsical Easter bonnets. She also enjoyed reading Zane Grey novels, liked traveling, she liked fishing and swimming, crossword puzzles, and traveling to casinos. She was preceded in death by her husband Maxwell, her father Charles Anthony; her mother Pansy Dugger; her brother James Anthony; and her son-in-law Dennis Hulse. Visitation will be held at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service after 12 noon Sunday where the family will be present from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Funeral services commemorating the life of Barbara Rolfe will be held Monday, November 22, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. in the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service with Pastor Thomas Schwartz of the Pine Grove Mennonite Church officiating. Betty Helen Newton Battle Creek Betty Helen Newton, 89, of Battle Creek died peacefully on Saturday morning, November 20, 2010 at the Evergreen Senior Care & Rehab Center. She was born in Lansing, Michigan on March 11, 1921 the daughter of Harry E. and Helen (Ailstock) Robinson. Betty married Warren Lester Newton in Battle Creek on June 26, 1948: he preceded her in death on July 20, 1993. She is survived by her daughters, Janis K. Williams of Battle Creek and Margaret J. Olsen of Florida; 2 grandsons, Michael J. (Angela) Williams, Jr. of Iowa and Jonathan Williams of Lansing; 3 great-grandchildren, Savannah, Sidney and Walker; and a brother, Jim (Nancy) Robinson. Betty was a Detroit Pistons Fan and enjoyed watching Golf, especially Tiger Woods. She was a member of the neighborhood birthday club. Betty was a great cook, loved working in her flower garden and was always there for her loving family. She also loved her many cats and dogs through the years. At the request of the family, funeral services to celebrate Betty's life will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 23, 2010 in the chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery. Beverly Christian Battle Creek Beverly M. Christian, age 82, of Battle Creek, passed away November 20, 2010. Beverly was born August 30, 1928 in Hastings, NE the daughter of Chauncey and Mollie (Sieckman) Eggerss. She married Robert Christian on November 14, 1947 in Lincoln, NE who preceded her in death on April, 15, 2005. Mrs. Christian was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Battle Creek, Beta Sigma Phi sorority, Riverside Country Club, and the Battle Creek Exchange Club. Beverly's family was her life, especially her grandchildren. She was very active with the Bible Study group and the Alter Guild at church. Beverly was a Sunday School and Head Start teacher. She enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and gardening. Beverly is survived by her children: Richard (JoAnn) Christian of Battle Creek, Dianne (William) Gooding of Williamston, MI, Mary Sue Christian of Battle Creek, Linda (Bruce) Robbins of Battle Creek, and Christine (Roger Lininger) Christian of Battle Creek; 14 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and her brother: John (Kay) Eggerss of Lincoln, NE. Besides her husband, Robert, Beverly was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Paul Eggerss. Visitation for Beverly will be on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Royal Funeral Home, Battle Creek. Clarey, Rita Mae

Clarey Rita Mae July 22, 1926 - October 1, 2010. Rita's spirit has risen to heaven to meet her God, her husband and eldest son who preceded her in death. Soon she will be a part of a very special and long awaited McCrady Reunion with her parents and 10 brothers and sisters. Her death will bring to close a generation whose memories we will all cherish. Her last days were spent in the peace and comfort of her home in Sparks, Nevada with her daughter Peggy Clarey and son-in-law, Fred Conner. Rita was born at the farm on Pumping Station Road. Fairfield County, Ohio. She grew up in Sugar Grove, Ohio, attended and graduated from Berne Union School in Sugar Grove, Ohio. Rita was the youngest child born to Charles and Rosemary (Shonebarger) McCrady. Rita was married to Wilbert A. Clarey for 56 years before his death in 2006. At that time she moved to Nevada to live with her only daughter. She had four children: Daniel (Linda), Peggy (Fred), Bruce (Alise), and Andrew (Laura). She had six male grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a Nurses Aid at Garden City Osteopathic Hospital for over 20 Years. G.C.O.H. is located less that one block from the family Home on Cardwell Street, Garden City, Michigan. Her interests included playing cards, bingo, casino gambling and creating Jewelry Pictures. With "Web", she became an active and enthusiastic member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, starting in the mid 50's at Johnsons Post #78, on Joy Road in Detroit, Michigan, and ending her service at Battle Born Post #9211 on VFW Historic Lane in Reno, Nevada. She was anointed by Father Norman King from the Immaculate Conception Church. Her remains will be at the Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia, Michigan. Instead of flowers or gifts, remembrances can be PAID FORWARD.

David T. Sootsman

David T. Sootsman East Leroy David T. Sootsman, 66, of East Leroy, passed away peacefully with his wife and daughter by his side Thursday, November 18, 2010. David was born January 24, 1944 in Bucyrus, OH to Elmer and Marjorie (Wasson) Sootsman. David graduated in 1962 from Lakeview High School and went on to attend college at Western Michigan University. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, from 1966-1969, stationed in Alaska. David had a love for music. One regret is that he did not pursue a career in music after his time in the Army. Instead, he worked at the Federal Center for two years and then in 1971, began working for the State of Michigan. He was employed by MESC for nine years and then went to the Office of Services to the Aging, retiring in 1984. David enjoyed sailing boats and racing cars, and later in life, that passion developed into collecting model trains, flying RC planes and sailing model boats. He was currently the Commodore of the Battle Creek Model Yacht Club and past president of the Balsa Bee?s Model Airplane Club. Along with help from his wife, Karen, and daughter, Coleen, David published and distributed internationally the Sootsman N Scale Collector's Guide. David also had an interest in politics, serving on various boards and committees in Emmett Township and Leroy Township. He also volunteered his time working the elections and with emergency management. On October 21, 1978, David married the love of his life, Karen Buteau, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Coleen (John) Sootsman-Eicher of Commerce Township; his granddaughter, Adelle Eicher; a sister, Mary Jane Quartermaine; his sister-in-law, Suzanne Buteau; and many of his favorite cats. At the request of the family, friends may call on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. A memorial service to celebrate David's life will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, November 24 at the funeral home, officiated by the Rev. Robert G. Muirhead. Interment with full military honors will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Gladys Mae Lux

Gladys Mae Lux Marshall Gladys Mae Lux, age 99, passed on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the Laurels of Galesburg. She was born in Union City, MI on April 20, 1911, the daughter of George R. Washburn and Nellie I. (Cummings) Washburn. Gladys married Ellis Fred Lux on March 30, 1929 and together they had seven children; Doretha, Leo, Wanda, Sue, Dorla, Mary Ellen, and Michael. She and Ellis both graduated from Union City High School. They made farming their lives and did so in Union City, Newton Township, and finally on a farm north of Fulton, MI. On December 6, 1974 Ellis passed on and Gladys lost her husband of 45 years. She then moved to Marshall House Apartments on East Spruce Street in Marshall, MI. Here she added bingo and cards to her long list of enjoyments which included: roses, crocheting, knitting, furry animals and Hershey Kisses. Gladys' greatest pleasure was holding babies and that is how many a friendship started. She was a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother and a great-great grandmother to many. Gladys outlived her three brothers: Ray, Rex and Carl Washburn. Carl died in 2009 days after celebrating his 100th birthday. She also lived with the loss of a daughter, Wanda Pease, and son, Leo Lux. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at graveside. Inurnment will take place at the Riverside Cemetery in Union City, MI. A family celebration of Gladys's life will take place in April 2011 which would mark her 100th birthday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Laurels of Galesburg in Gladys's name. He will also be remembered for his charisma and the way he touched people on a personal level. Kimberly Sue Henry Litchfield-Marshall On Friday, November 12, 2010, Kim went to join her lord and savior after a courageous fight with cancer surrounded by family and friends. She was born on May 14, 1964, in Marshall to Larry and Carol Henry. They survive. Before being diagnosed with Cancer, Kim was working for Concord School District in the Kitchen and Custodial departments. In the past, she had worked at Chemical Bank in Albion, Farm Bureau Insurance in Albion, as well as various jobs throughout Calhoun and Jackson Counties. She was also a nanny and housekeeper for Dennis and Kim Neitzka and for their children Heather and Cole of Coldwater, whom she cared for deeply. Kim enjoyed doing counted cross-stitch, crocheting, and her animals. She was a 4-H leader in Jackson County for sheep and goats. She loved best to be involved with her children. Kim was a very giving person, a very trusted daughter, mother and friend. She will be greatly missed. Surviving in addition to her parents are her children, Edward and Samantha Henry; step-daughters, Casey and Caitlin Passmore; brother, Christopher Henry; maternal grandmother, Carmen Young; her faithful companion, Queenie; her beloved Aunt Rosie and Uncle Dennis from Tennessee; as well as many other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her very dear friend, Sandi Webster and best friend of more than 30 years, Valerie Andrews. Cremation and memorial have already taken place. He worked first as an associate of George Goodheart, founder of Applied Kinesiology and later practiced privately in Birmingham for 25 years. His ability to reach bodies, hearts and minds was legendary. Rob was gifted at articulating the pilgrimage towards consciousness. Rob was the enthusiastic president of Kirkwood Lake Association for 20 years. Rob loved to fish with his brothers and friends on the beautiful Michigan waterways. All those who knew Rob knew he was the facilitator of fun and joy and true engagement in life. Survived by beloved wife Lynn and daughters Sarah and Alyssa. Mary Jane (Lea) Smith Farwell Mary Jane (Lea) Smith, 89, died Sunday, November 14, 2010. Mrs. Smith was born July 5, 1921 in South Bend, WA the daughter of Charles and Mable (Zauner) Armstrong. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker who met and wed her husband, Donald Lea, a young soldier from Michigan in 1942. She never forgot her roots and journeyed back many times to Westport, WA and Shoalwater Bay. As a Shoalwater Bay Indian tribal elder, her stories will be greatly missed. In 2009 she realized her dream of writing a cookbook. She is survived by her second husband, Norman Smith; sons, Donald Zauner (Jill) Lea of Charlotte and Charles E. (Deborah) Lea of Rockford; daughter, Kathleen Lea McCoy of Mt. Pleasant; 4 grandchildren, Travis (Lisa) Lea, Stacey (Michael) Mroczkowski, Justin McCoy and Megan (Cody) West; 4 great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Condon of Seattle, WA and Charlene Nelson of Tokeland, WA.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald E. Lea in 1968; son-in-law, Douglas McCoy; sisters, Dorothy Matthews and Lois Cooper. Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, MI with Rev. Father Francis Mossholder officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, MI. Visitation was Wednesday, November 17, 2010 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home. Williams (Nee Kramer, Josephone Mabel

Williams Josephine Mabel (Nee Kramer) Age 80 of Utica, died peacefully Saturday, October 2, 2010 after a 7 year battle with Alzheimer's. She is survived by her only daughter Donna (Michael) Kemper, her niece Marie (David) Vanker, and her nephews John Kramer and Raymond (Yvonne) Kramer plus several grandnieces and grandnephews. Jo graduated from Capac High School in 1948 and worked for Sears for 32 years. She loved gardening and animals. Funeral Service 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Wm.
