Bruce A. Brandt

Bruce A. Brandt Lakeland, FL Bruce A. Brandt, 67, of Lakeland, FL (formerly of Battle Creek) passed away on September 21, 2010, after an unexpected illness. He was born in Battle Creek, MI on September 24, 1942 to Ross and Wilma (Lux) Brandt. He graduated from Union City High School in 1960. He was an active member of Emmett Rescue Squad where he served as President for many years. He was also a police officer with the Emmett Township Police Department during this time and spent many years serving the public. Bruce worked at Kellogg's in many areas of the plant. He was a member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club and the Grain Millers' Union. He married Elaine Sanders in 1962, they divorced in 1978. He later married Linda Terburg in 1984. She survives. Bruce enjoyed Detroit Tigers baseball games (attending all home spring training games in Lakeland), playing golf, riding Gold Wing motorcycles and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and step great grandsons, Bo and Luke Stafford. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Brenda (Jeffrey) Holt, Julie (Chuck) Staky of East Lansing, Shelly (Zach) Wagner of St. Louis, MO; step daughters, Amiee Hill of Kalamazoo and Tammy (Kenneth) Meade of Vermontville; 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; brother, Wesley (Jane) Brandt; sister, Anne Brandt of Burlington; nephews and a niece. A memorial service is being held at 12:00 noon, Thursday, October 7, 2010 at First Wesleyan Church, 14425 S. Helmer Road, with visitation starting at 11:00 am. Memorials available at the service include Gloves for Kids through the Detroit Tigers Foundation, Comerica Park, 2100 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48201.

Frank G. Craig, Sr. Battle Creek, Frank G. Craig, Sr., 87, died October 1, 2010. Frank was born October 30, 1922 to Wilson and Josephine (Clift) Craig in Battle Creek. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and went on the serve in the United States Army, earning the rank of Sgt. Frank worked for the United Steel and Wire Company since 1942, before his retirement in 1995. Frank married Wanda H. Wells in August of 1942, who preceded him in death in 1998. Frank was actively involved in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, serving as a trustee and as President from 1975 to 1997. He was a member of the AARP and a former member of General George A. Custer American Legion, Post #54. Frank is survived by his two children, Frank (Carol) Craig Jr. and Judy (Jim) Smith; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Craig. Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda; two sisters, Betty Jean Seward and June Valadick; and three brothers, William Craig, Clifford Craig, and Wilson Craig. James Richard "Jim" Getman

James Richard "Jim" Getman Battle Creek James Richard "Jim" Getman, age 68, of Battle Creek, MI, died Sunday, September 26, 2010, at his residence surrounded by his loving family, following a short battle with liver cancer. Jim was born on May 4, 1942 in Battle Creek and was the son of Jack and Josephine (Pickles) Getman. He was a 1961 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. Jim served his country proudly as a Telecommunications Operations Supervisor, Staff Sergeant for the United States Air Force, retiring after 20 years of active duty serving from 1962 thru 1982. He then was at the Battle Creek Federal Center as a communications expert for the Defense Logistic Service Center, retiring in 2001 after 18 years of faithful service. Jim was known for being a very friendly and outgoing guy that loved playing cards, Sudoku puzzles and traveling, but his passion was his family. The only weakness he had was an overwhelming appetite for Red Twizzler Licorice! On April 6, 1963, in Oscoda, MI, Jim was united in marriage to the former, Nancy E. Frazier. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Nancy; his daughter, Paulette Lea Getman of Coldwater, MI; his two sons, Michael Shane (Heather) Getman and Larry Jack (Michelle) Getman, both of Battle Creek; and by his six grandchildren, David, Ashley, Tyler, Brittany, Josh and Abagail. Jim was preceded in death by his parents. The graveside service to celebrate Jim's life was held on Friday, October 1st at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI, with the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard and the Fort Custer Honor Guard bestowing full, military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim's honor may be made to the, , Southwest Michigan Area Service Center, 1400 West Milham Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI, 49024. She was born April 07, 1944 in Pocatello, ID the daughter of Robert Lester Brewer and Lorna Ruth (Holmden) Brewer. Jo-Ann is a life long resident of Battle Creek. She was a 1962 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and a 1989 graduate of Nazareth College. Jo-Ann retired from the City of Battle Creek as an income tax auditor in 2009 and formerly was employed at Ralstons as an accountant for 26 years. Jo-Ann is survived by a daughter: Kristi and Clark Oversmith; sons: Shawn Kennedy and Scott Kennedy all of Battle Creek, MI; sisters: Sandy and Roy Wolfgang of Fredric, MI and Nancy and Mike Delgado of Lansing, MI; brother: Terry and Joy Brewer of Cape Girardeau, MO; grandchildren: Matthew, Brittani, Shawn, Kloey and 2 great-grandchildren; stepsisters: Mary Trebilcock and Becky Haywood both of Battle Creek, MI; stepbrothers: Mike and Carol Bacon of Kalamazoo, MI, Leland Bacon of Florida and Mark and Theresa Bacon of Alabama. She and her late husband vacationed in Kissimmee, Florida for several years during Baseball's Spring Training and was a member of the North Avenue Church of God. She was born April 3, 1923, in Hickory Corners, Michigan to Henry and Mabel (Fenn) Dorwin. Merlah's parents were farmers in the Calhoun County area and worked for Dr. Kellogg. In Merlah's teen years they settled in Battle Creek and she has resided here since. She attended school in Dowling and at W.K. Kellogg. During WWII Merlah was employed at Eaton Corporation. Merlah was united in marriage to Gerald D. Huffman, the love of her life on July 26, 1945. She was preceded in death by Gerald, her husband of 38 years on January 19, 1984; and also by her parents. Surviving are her daughter, Jacqueline A. Huffman of Battle Creek and several nieces and nephews and their families. Merlah was a member of Garrison Hills Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed cooking for special functions at the church and was always willing to help out. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting and especially loved spending time with her friends. At the request of the family, friends will be received 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where services to celebrate Merlah's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2010. Reatha "Tiny" Angell Battle Creek Reatha "Tiny" Angell, age 82, of Battle Creek, passed away October 1, 2010. Tiny was born November 27, 1927 in Battle Creek the daughter of William and Gertie (Hutcheson) Collins. She married Wayne Angell on July 20, 1946 in Angola, IN and he preceded her in death on December 5, 2002. Tiny was a member of the Lakeview Baptist Church for 51 years serving as the Chairman of Trustees, the Memorial Committee, V.B.S., the Choir, and the Circle. She was also active with the Food Pantry. Tiny loved to play cards, make crafts, and square dancing. Tiny is survived by her sons: Mark Angell and Scott Angell; 5 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; her brother: Whitie Collins; her sisters: Mary (Jack) Willavize and Sonnie (Joe) Boes; her special friend: Lee Ricketson all of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved dog: Mickey. Funeral Services for Tiny will be held on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. at the Royal Funeral Home, Battle Creek with Pastor Dan Warren officiating. Thomas Neil Jakeway Lansing Born to George and Beatrice Jakeway on September 19, 1931. Passed peacefully unto our Lord with his wife and family by his side on September 30, 2010 at the age of 79 in Lansing where he was a life-long resident. Tom served his country in the United States Air Force where he fell in love with his wife, Betty of 55 years while stationed in Topeka, Kansas. Tom was a proud member of the first graduating class of Lansing Community College and received a degree in Electrical Technologies. He was hired into the Board of Water and Light as an Electrical Engineer and retired as Superintendant of the Line Department. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Maridell Vincent and Doris Cloar. Surviving are his wife, Betty; daughter, Tammy Fischer; son, Timothy Jakeway; 2 grandchildren, Robert and Brittany Fischer; uncles, Bob Jakeway and Dr. Wade Jakeway; brothers, Norman (Vonnie) Jakeway, Spencer (Bonnie) Jakeway; sisters, Judy (Gene) Gibson, Linda Jakeway and Leslie Jakeway. Wayne Harmon Carnell Battle Creek Wayne Harmon Carnell, age 75, of Battle Creek, MI, died Tuesday morning, September 28, 2010, at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence, Battle Creek, surrounded by his loving family. Wayne was born on July 19, 1935 in Battle Creek and was the son of Howard B. and Orbie G. (Smith) Carnell. He served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army, Tank Corps. Wayne retired from Kellogg's in 1993 as a production worker, after 27 years of faithful service; a member of its 25 Year Club and the Grain Miller's Union. On October 27, 1958, in Fort Wayne, IN, Wayne was united in marriage to the former, Arlene M. Miller. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Arlene; his daughter, Karen (Steve) Carnell-Stevenson of Otsego, MI; his son, Bruce (Brenda) Carnell of Sherwood, MI; by his five grandchildren, Jessica, Ashley and Joshua Carnell, Chelsea Stevenson and Aaron Noel; and several special nieces and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Evelyn Blanchard, Frances Latshaw and Jean Beatty; and by two brothers, Jim and Bud Carnell. A private, family graveside service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Willa Mae Stiles Richland Willa Mae Stiles, age 90, of Richland, MI, formerly a 61 year Battle Creek resident, died peacefully, Friday afternoon, October 1, 2010, at Kairos Dwelling of Kalamazoo, MI. Willa was born on December 21, 1919 in Franklin, NC and was the daughter of Jesse L. and Ida F. (Shope) Sanders. She was a graduate of Rabun Gap College of Georgia and retired from the Calhoun County (MI) Register of Deeds Office, where she had been a Deputy Registar in the 1960's thru the 1970's. On July 26, 1941, in Clayton, GA, Willa was united in marriage to Edwin Thomas Stiles. Surviving are her husband of 69 years, Edwin; three daughters, Judy (Dan) Mervar, Nancy (Mike) Allen and Diane (Craig) Leatherman; two sons, Hugh (Sue) Stiles and Dennis (Kim) Stiles; by 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Willa was preceded in death by her parents and by her youngest daughter, Patti Sue Veazey, on August 31, 2007. The graveside service to celebrate Willa's life will be held on Monday, October 4th at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI. Friends will be received on Monday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Avenue.
