Allan Kost, 69 ROCKFORD - Allan Kost, 69, of Rockford passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, surrounded by family. Born June 25, 1941, in Maple Heights, Ohio, the son of Elmer and Bertha (Beloubek) Kost. Allan married Elizabeth Ella Brown of Port Arthur, Texas, on July 15, 1967. They raised two sons in Rockford. He served his country proudly, earning the rank of U.S. Air Force captain. He continued dedicated service to his country through his civilian career in aerospace engineering, retiring from UTC Hamilton Sunstrand in 2009. Allan enjoyed working in his yard, visiting with friends and neighbors, taking cars and things apart, naps, and a good cigar. Survivors include sons, Michael (Jen Brady Kost) and Steven Kost; best friends, Marie, Nick and Brianna Cox; granddaughter, Lillian Elizabeth Kost; brothers, Fred (June) Kost and Dennis (Frances) Kost; sister-in-law, Bertie Kost; and numerous squirrels that outran him. Allan was preceded in death by wife, Elizabeth Brown Kost; parents; and brother, Carl Kost. Service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, in Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park. Bessie Samartano Abramovich, 91 ROCKFORD - BESSIE SAMARTANO ABRAMOVICH, 91, ROCKFORD - Bessie Samartano Abramovich, 91, a lifelong resident of Rockford, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2010. Born May 3, 1919, she was the second of Nicholas and Angelina Samartano's four children and their oldest daughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; older brother, Michael Samartano; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Lee. She is survived by sons, Michael F. (Carol) Abramovich Jr. of Albuquerque, N.M., and George James of Escondido, Calif.; daughter, Helene (Arthur) Hinkel of Machesney Park; grandchildren, Michael Abramovich of Albuquerque, Wendi Abramovich of Rio Rancho, N.M., Kelli Abramovich of Glendale, Ariz., Tom (Bobbi) Leu of Rockford and Lorianne Hinkel of Machesney Park; great-grandchildren, Cameron Montano of Rio Rancho, N.M., Christian Leu of Rockford and Maddy and Gabby Roth of Rockford; sisters, Josephine Edgren of Rockford and Mary Briski of Lexington, Ky.; and two nieces and one nephew. Bessie was a longtime communicant at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, and during her life she worked first as a nurse's aide, then at Atwood Industries, where she retired in the 1970s. She was a kind-hearted and loving woman who enjoyed good pasta, fine chocolates and entertaining with the Dancing Dames dance troupe. The family would like to thank Alpine Fireside Health Center's nurses, CNAs and their entire staff for all the loving care; and the staff at Transitions Hospice for their compassionate concern. Betty Jean Corbett, 78 MOUNT MORRIS - Betty Jean Corbett, 78, died Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home. Betty was born Dec. 8, 1931, in Chicago to Elwood and Vernie (McCready) Hanes. She graduated from Mount Morris High School, Class of 1949. Betty married Floyd Eugene "Corby" Corbett on April 17, 1949, in Mount Morris. She worked as a secretary for the vice president general manager of Kable Printing Co. Betty retired Feb. 1, 1992. Betty was a member of the Mount Morris Ladies of the Moose,, Ladies Auxiliary and Sunset Golf Club. Betty loved bowling, bridge club, golf, cooking, watching the Cubs and the Bulls play, and she loved her family get-togethers. Survived by husband, Gene Corbett of Mount Morris; son, Ronald E. Betty was born May 21, 1928, in Palmyra, Mo., to Edward Arthur "Boy" and Annie Lee Roach Fagan. Betty was married to Clemont J. Bevill July 4, 1945, in Philadelphia, Mo., and had celebrated 65 wonderful years together. He survives., She was a graduate of Philadelphia High School in 1945. Betty had worked for many years as a consultant and fashion show director for Sarah Coventry Co. and for seven years in a row attained their highest honor through their national million dollar weeks contest. She had formerly sold Avon as a product sales representative., Betty was a loving, caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She treasured the Christmas holiday season spending time with family and friends. Also, she loved to travel with her husband, not only with their mobile home, but also taking 34 cruises. She cherished spending time at their vacation home in Arizona and later their condo at the Landing. ELLA ELIZABETH (SENNEFF) YOECKEL

Ella Elizabeth (Senneff) Yoeckel, 77, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at Ash Flat (Ark.) Nursing & Rehab Center., Born Sept. 27, 1933, in Sterling, Ill., to Fredrick and Emma Behler (Martin) Senneff, she married Edward C. Yoeckel on July 10, 1954, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sterling. They made their home in the Sterling-Rock Falls area until moving first to Big Rock, then to Plano; they later moved to Somonauk, where they lived for the past 42 years. She and Ed were preparing to make their home in Hardy, Ark., Ella spent many years as a homemaker, avid gardener and working at Miller's Foods in Somonauk until she retired., Ella was very active in two Lutheran churches, St. John's in Somonauk and Our Savior's in Sandwich. She enjoyed serving, sewing and sharing her time with those from both churches. She also participated in visiting times with the shut-ins at Lutheran nursing homes and the veterans' home in Mendota. She enjoyed her many friends in her neighborhood, who always found her ready and willing to help when called upon. She loved family get-togethers and never missed an opportunity of game playing., Surviving are her husband, Edward; daughters, Ann (Kevin) Dienst of Hardy, Ark., and Brenda (Edward) Thieman of Centerville, Ohio; sons, John (Betty) of Sandwich and Perry of Largo, Fla.; grandchildren, Kal (Sara) Dienst, Jennifer (Charles Budd) Hanson, Adam and Ben Thieman, Steven (Michele Mach) Anderson, David (Vickie) Anderson and Elissa (Howard) Belcher; great-grandchildren, Archer and Annestyn Dienst, Raven Hanson, Arlo and Aleena Budd, Camon Anderson, Mario Palombo, Josh and Jacob Vodden and Kyle and Rebecca Belcher; nephew, Greg Shirley of Sandwich; and her special son, George (Carlene) Estrada and son, Christopher, of Sycamore., Ella was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Arlo (Beulah) Senneff; sister, Millie Shirley; nephew, Gary Shirley; and two brothers-in-law., Funeral services and interment were held Oct. 9, at Heath Funeral Home, in Hardy, Ark., A local memorial service will be held Nov. 6 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Somonauk; family visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m., The family asks that memorials be directed to Open Door Rehabilitation, Sandwich.

John W. Gustafson, 77 CLINTON, Wis. - John W. Gustafson, 77, died Friday Oct. 22, 2010, in his home surrounded by his loving family. John was born June 16, 1933, to the late C. David and Evelyn (Nelson) Gustafson in Beloit. He graduated from Clinton High School, Class of 1951, and completed his education at Blackhawk Tech. John married Gladys Langrehr on Aug. 26, 1951, in Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He was a longtime and active member of Redeemer Evangelical Covenant Church, where he held many offices and leadership roles. John started his career as a charter member of Turtle Fire Department. On June 16, 1962, John joined the Beloit Fire Department, where he retired as assistant fire chief on Dec. 23, 1988. He also taught EMS at Blackhawk Tech and volunteered for the teaching CPR. Family and faith were the cornerstones in John's life anchored by his wife, Gladys. He worked side-by-side with his sons as a firefighter and as a dairy farmer. Turtle 4-H activities were very important to John. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in 4-H activities over the years. John also enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting activities. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gladys; children, Kathy (Steven) Nilson, Susan Siler, Steven (Diane) Gustafson, Mark (Christine) Gustafson, Debra McMillan and Jeffrey (Lori) Gustafson; grandchildren, Matthew (Michelle) Nilson, Rebecca (Josh) Hinz, Christina Nilson, Ryan Siler, Brent (Trisha) Siler, Shelby (Mark) Farberg, Timothy (Lindsey) Gustafson, Evie (Brady) Eilers, Nathanael Gustafson, Joel Gustafson, Rachel Gustafson, Angela Splan, Amanda (Angie) Splan, Alicia (Matt) Schroeder, Jeremy McMillan, Jamie McMillan and Jordan Gustafson; six great-grandchildren; brothers, David (Jean) Gustafson and Wallace (Julie) Gustafson; sister, Christine (Robert) Anderson; aunt, Norma Ang; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles (1999) and her parents Carl J. (1961) and Emma E. (1942) Ericksen and her sister Lorayne (1955) and her great niece Amy Dixon and Amy's 2 daughters Olivia and Gracie (2005). Survived by one son, Eric Charles (Mary Ann) Egger, two granddaughters, Erica Ann and Amber June Egger, a niece, June Pekol and a nephew, Mark Puddicombe (her God children), three great nieces, one great nephew, three great great nieces, one great great nephew and several cousins. June and Charles were married in 1940 and shared 58 wonderful married years. June's family gently cared for her during the last 11 years. Educated in Rock Island, Illinois, Bettendorf, Iowa and Joliet, Illinois public Schools, was elected to The National Honor Society in her Junior Year, was on the debate team as a Freshman and throughout high school, was an R.O.T.C. sponsor, and graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1933, from Joliet Junior College, Metropolitan Business College and Joliet Conservatory in Drama in 1935. Studied Creative Writing at, by extension, Silversmithing in Chicago and completed Bennit Cerf's Famous Writer's Course. Employed as secretary to the Superintendent of The Joliet Public Schools until her marriage in 1940, as secretary at Kankakee Ordnance Works during, and worked in partnership with her husband, Charles, in The America Coal Company, Egger Landscape Service, Egger Lapidary Shop and with Holiday Magic Cosmetic Studio for 35 years, retiring in 1979. Life long member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving as director of Bible School and Sunday School Superintendent, having written and directed four children's Christmas pageants and writer of four church histories. She wrote and directed plays for the Business and Professional Women's Club, The Women's Division of the Y.M.C.A. (serving as president) Pershing P.T.A. (serving as president) and Hufford P.T.A. (serving as treasurer) recipient of a Life Membership in Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers, member of The Joliet Gem Club, free lance Herald News writer, past president and history writer of the Woman's Club of Joliet and recipient of multi awards in the General Federation of Women's Club Creative Writing Contests. She was a member of her high school Class Reunion committee since 1933 for its 72 annual dinners and partial writer of the annual class newsletter. The 50th reunion "Memories" she wrote found itself in the J.T.H.S. Time Capsule in 2000. She wrote original poetry booklets for her grandchildren including "The Polka Dotted Shoes" and "Ethics for Kids" and poems for special family celebrations. She wrote spiritual poems to express her Christian Faith. She researched the highlights and chronology of her family and left a 300 page pictorial legacy called "Family Spoken Here" accompanied by a detailed generation outline called "The Begats". Mrs. Cornell was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Hope, Ark., to Robert Manton and Virginia Reed Wilson. Mary was married to Russell Bernard Cornell on Jan. 7, 1950, in Hope. He died Feb. 23, 2010., in Austin, Texas. Mrs. Cornell attended University of Arkansas for two years and was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She worked in Washington D.C. during World War II then completed her education at University of Texas. Her husband, Russell B. Cornell, was a geophysicist with Mobil Oil Co. for 38 years. They lived in Midland, Texas, from 1950-1972, Houston, Texas, from 1972-1976, Dallas, Texas, from 1976-2003 and then moved to Hannibal., Mrs. Cornell was always an active member of the Presbyterian Church and sang in their choir for many years. She enjoyed her life as a homemaker, watercolor artist, needle pointer, and antique fan collector., Mrs. Cornell was the International President of FANA from 1994-1996. FANA is a U.S. and European Fan Collecting Assoc. She and her husband enjoyed their trips abroad to their meetings., Mrs. Cornell was also a member of the Dallas Watercolor Society, Southwest Watercolor Society, Richardson Civic Art Society, Chi Omega Alums, Mobil Spouses Club, James Campbell Chapter of NSDAR in Dallas, John Chew Chapter of Daughters of the American Confederacy, and Dallas Museum of Art. Mrs. Cornell spent many volunteer hours working as a docent for Old City Park in Dallas and enjoyed her duplicate bridge group and book club. After moving to Hannibal in 2003, she joined the First Presbyterian Church, G.F.W.C. Woman's Club of Hannibal, and Hannibal Heritage Chapter of NSDAR., She is survived by her daughter, Julia Cornell Behrens and her husband, James R. Behrens, of Hannibal; two grandchildren, James C. Behrens of Los Angeles, Calif., and Katherine E. He was born Nov. 5, 1919, in New Canton, Ill., to Giles E. and Gertrude Haskins Ward. He married Anne Marie Hessing on June 29, 1944, in St. Francis Chapel in Quincy., Melvin was a retired farmer and bulldozer operator in Pike County who raised Jersey cattle and Duroc hogs. He enjoyed taking his children and grandchildren to fairs. He was proud of his family and enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A favorite pastime was people-watching and conversing with friends, as well as with strangers. In retirement years, he and Anne spent their winters in Texas., Melvin's hobbies included reading and showing cattle and hogs. He was a former member of the Jersey Cattle Club and West Pike School Board. She grew up in the Portland Oregon area. She graduated from Oregon State University, For the past 40 years she has resided in Elgin. For over twenty five years she had a distinguish career in Real estate. She was most notable associated with Hoover-Burnidge Realtors and Stark realtors. She was a member of AAUW. Pat is survived by her devoted son Donald Ryan Link of Elgin, twin daughters Karen (Joseph) Kelly of OR and Cathryn (David) Bergman of MI. Six grandchildren, including Benjamin and Caleigh Link of Elgin, two great-grandchildren, her daughter-in-law Donita Link and her brother Dr William (Carol) Barber of WA and several nieces and nephews. Patrick E. Seaborn, 62, of Baylis, and formerly of Beardstown, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2010, in his home., He was born Jan. 29, 1948, in Beardstown, the son of K.L. "Lefty" and Nina Bernice Orebaugh Seaborn. He married Lily Fearneyhough on July 5, 1985, in Bowling Green, Mo., Surviving is his wife, Lily Seaborn of Baylis; two brothers, Phillip (wife, Elaine) Seaborn and Butch (wife, Patty) Seaborn, both of Baylis; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Phyllis Logsdon., Pat graduated from Beardstown High School in the class of 1966 and then served in the, 1967-1971 serving on the USS Bon Homme Richard in Vietnam. He was a self-employed electrician. He owned and operated the Dirty Shame Saloon (1977-1986) and also owned and operated Seaborn Electric both in Beardstown. He was also employed with Logsdon River Construction in Beardstown from 1987 until 2005. He owned and assisted farming the 1830 Seaborn family farm in Pike County. Pat enjoyed being outdoors, boating, duck, quail and pheasant hunting, and fishing. He truly loved being at gatherings with his family and close friends., Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Baylis Cemetery. McHENRY – Raymond Paul Schiller, 89, of McHenry, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at Lexington Health Care in Lake Zurich., He was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Marshfield, Wis., to Paul K. and Lillian (Stover) Schiller. On June 27, 1942, he married Doris Marie Hamil at St. Mary's Church in McHenry. They made their home in McHenry County and raised 10 children., He was a loving husband, father and brother. His discipline, labor, and perseverance provided a backbone of security for those who counted on him. He took great pride in his life from raising his family and managing a farm to operating a road grader. He had a great love of family gatherings and being a craftsman and an appreciation of the lessons in nature. Veteran of the, serving aboard the U.S.S. Galveston. Bob retired from Electro Motive in LaGrange as manager of the service warranty department after 30 years. He is a member of First Presbyterian Church. In 2005 Bob and Andrea moved into his dream home in Morris, IL. His favorite pastimes were golfing with his EMG buddies, playing euchre, collecting antique glass baskets and maintaining his home and lawn. She was a underground coal miner when it was uncommon for women to be working in the mines. She was also a waitress and her last job as a cook was at Bruno's restaurant in Sesser., She was a generous, kind-hearted woman who enjoyed the company of family and friends. She was a friend to any stray cat or dog that happened her way., She will be greatly missed by her family and friends., Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2010, in Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, with Brother Brian Mixon officiating. Burial will be in Horse Prairie Cemetery in Sesser. She was born June 4, 1932, in Quincy, the daughter of Leland and Leona Dowling Wiseman. On Nov. 11, 1950, she married Melvin E. Tappe in Quincy. He died on July 11, 1992., She was a 1949 graduate of Quincy High School and went on to attend Western Illinois University. She was a member of The Crossing Church. Wanda was involved in many things over the years. In addition to owning the Broadway Dress Shop, she was one of the founding members of WGCA Christian radio station and in 1987 she became the president of the station. In 2001 she won the Mrs. West Central All American Tristate Beauty contest. She mentored children at St. Dominic School for years. She was a past president for the Salvation Army Auxiliary. Being very involved at The Crossing Church, she hosted a hand-in-hand bereavement group for widows in her home. She also hosted reading prayer groups in her home for years. She always loved to go to sporting events with family.
